n behalf of the Board and staff of Bowls Australia, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you all here to Club Sapphire in idyllic Merimbula for the return of the coveted Australian Championships. The return of this event to the national calendar provides an important pathway for winners of the state and territory titles and a chance to truly determine and crown the sport’s best across all eight disciplines. It is with great excitement that we watch on this week as the event returns to the sport’s calendar of events following a 12-year hiatus; it is without question one of the sport’s most prestigious competitions and one every player across the country would like to win. I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank Club Sapphire, its Board, staff, members, officials and volunteers for their significant contribution to the staging of this event; you have gone to great efforts to ensure this event will be unprecedented success. I would also like to acknowledge and pay tribute to the eight state and territory associations, whose support of their players has ensured they are all represented here this week with distinction. We also offer our thanks to Sapphire Coast Tourism for their assistance with the planning and staging of this competition. I wish to congratulate all of the players for earning the honour of competing at this event, regardless of the results this week, you are all winners. The return of the
national titles The 2017 Australian Championships will feature the best players from across the nation, converging on the idyllic greens of Merimbula’s Club Sapphire. In a true showdown of strength, all eight State and Territory Association winners in the disciplines of singles, pairs, triples and fours will playoff for the ultimate glory of being crowned the national champions. The event returns to the calendar after a 12-year hiatus, having last been played at Harbord, NSW in 2004. Australian Jackaroos squad member and 2017 Cruiseabout Male Bowler of the Year Barrie Lester (Mulgrave Country Club, VIC) will be looking to extend his recent streak of among a start-studded Men’s Singles contingent. Lester will be joined by fellow Jackaroos teammates Aron Sheriff (Ettalong, NSW) and Nathan Rice (Club Helensvale, QLD), in what will be a vital hit-out ahead of the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. The Women’s Singles features the recently crowned 2017 Australian Champion of Champions Singles title-holder Colleen Orr (Darwin, NT) and the 2016 Australian Indoor Singles winner Natasha Scott (Raymond Terrace, NSW). Scott will also be contesting the Women’s Pairs with Genevieve Delves (Raymond Terrace, NSW), while Jackaroo Lynsey Clarke and her Club Helensvale teammate Natasha Jones will be looking to bring the silverware back to Queensland. In the men’s side of the draw, Glenroy’s young duo of John McCarron and Ben Hubber will have their eyes set on continuing their hot streak of form that saw them capture the Victorian title earlier this year.
Canadian international representative Ryan Bester will be skipping the Queensland qualified team of Sean Ingham and Kevin Anderson from Broadbeach in the Men’s Triples, while rising under-18 star Jessica Srisamruaybai will step up to the big stage as she combines with Ann-Marie Peart and Melissa Larcombe (Tweed Heads, QLD). The Men’s Fours brings plenty of experience with Jackaroos Brett Wilkie and Nathan Rice being joined by Des Cann Jnr and Matthew Lucas (Club Helensvale, QLD), while the stellar composite quartet of Chloe Stewart, Lynsey Clarke (Club Helensvale), Natasha Jones and Julie Keegan (Broadbeach) will be representing Queensland. Schedule and format Schedule of play As per the Conditions of Play for the event, each discipline will be played within one day as follows:
• Men’s & Women’s Fours: Tuesday, November 28; • Men’s & Women’s Triples: Wednesday, November 29; • Men’s & Women’s Pairs: Thursday, November 30; • Men’s & Women’s Singles: Friday, December 1. All disciplines will be played in two sections of four qualifiers (allocated at random per discipline), with each team to play all other teams within their section. The winners of each section will play off for gold; the second placed teams in each section will play off for bronze. Match times are as follows: •
Match 1: 8:45am
• Lunch: 11:30am • Match 2: 12:00pm • Match 3: 2:45pm • Finals: 6:00pm
Format of play: The format of play for each discipline is as follows:
• Fours: 2 bowl fours, 15 ends; • Triples: 2 bowl triples; 18 ends; • Pairs: 2x2x2x2 pairs, 18 ends; • Singles: 25-up, four bowls each. All sectional matches have a two-and-a-half hour time limit, while gold medal and bronze medal matches are untimed (although please note that delay of play penalties apply within the Conditions of Play).
