Dangerous Goods sailing change ahead ALEX KURIAL Editor
BUOYED BEACH Sandy Beach has a brand new life buoy ring, unveiled during a celebration last Saturday. The ribbon-cutting was performed by Sheryl McKercy - joined by her son Will - who secured the buoy through an application for a Neighbourhood Small Grant from the Bowen Island Community Foundation. There were plenty of chances to give the buoy a toss during the afternoon as well as lessons on general water safety from the Smart Watch team. Check inside the paper for more! / Alex Kurial photo
The weekly Wednesday afternoon sailing of Dangerous Goods cargo from Bowen Island to Horseshoe Bay will take place at 1:55 pm starting on June 3. BC Ferries made the decision to move the sailing - which does not permit other vehicles or passengers - following a request from the Municipality (BIM) to review the schedule. Feedback gathered from the community was overwhelmingly in favour of moving the restricted sailing from the 4:40 pm timeslot - heavily utilized by commuters and students - to a less-busy early afternoon period. “We appreciate this long-discussed change to the ferry schedule that will make it easier for students, contractors, and visitors leaving the island during peak times,” said mayor Andrew Leonard in a statement. Favourable feedback also included less congestion in the Snug Cove ferry lineup due to the size of vehicles waiting for the afternoon Dangerous Goods sailing, and the commercial operators of these trucks saying the earlier sailing would help improve their workflow. Island businesses and tourism also supported the move. The Wednesday morning Dangerous Goods sailing from Horseshoe Bay to Bowen will continue to be at 9:20 am.
