Diverse range of Muni Community Grant recipients ALEX KURIAL Editor
FULL CREDIT FOR CLEANUP CREW Bowen’s beaches are significantly cleaner thanks to the efforts of First Credit Union employees during the company’s Community Impact Day. With a focus on the environment, (L-R) Annie Arbuckle, Katarina Tichopad, Kevin Manning, & Kristen Helssen headed out on a Thursday afternoon and made sure no trash was left behind as they walked our local beaches. First Credit Union has made the day an annual event since 2014, with each of their different communities picking a volunteer activity to participate in. More than 120 employees took part this year across B.C.
Eight organizations will be the recipients of funds from the Community Grants Advisory Committee. Just over $31,000 was awarded in total following applications to the municipal committee. A major beneficiary of the decision was the Bowen Children’s Centre, receiving $10,000 toward the Family Place portion of their childcare centre. Family Place functions as a drop-in area for new parents and their children, and also offers classes and activities for young families. On the education side, Island Pacific School received $5,000 to fund a bursary for an Island student. The Bowen Island Library Foundation received $800 to put toward the 100th Birthday Celebration of the Old General Store, taking place on Saturday, August 10 at the Library. Bowen Island Food Resilience Society was awarded $3,730 for accessible seed processing equipment, while the Bowen Island Conservancy is $3,500 closer to their goal of publishing a book about Mannion Bay.
