Authentically Indigenous Festival on Bowen Island KATHLEEN AINSCOUGH The Hearth Gallery

PUBLIC PRIDE Bowen Island was decked out for its first ever public Pride event last Saturday. The Pride Ride, Stride & Picnic fell perfectly on the first day of Pride Month, drawing hundreds of people throughout the day to morning activities at the Farmers Market, a 200+ person strong parade through Snug Cove, and finally a community picnic at the Bowfest Field. The Authentically Indigenous Festival on Nexwlélexwm/ Bowen Island opens on June 7 with a multi-day array of events and activities celebrating Indigenous arts, culture, arts and other expressions of creativity. The Indigenous festival is proudly presented by the Hearth - Arts on Bowen, in collaboration with Simon Daniel James, guest-curator. Also known as Winadzi, Simon is an internationally renowned artist in many mediums. He trained at Vancouver Film School and is the co-creator of the animated “Raven Tales” series which airs on Aboriginal Peoples Television Network and there is also a book set of graphic novels based on the screenplays. Now living on Bowen Island with his family, Simon has created public art including the welcome pole at the community school. James was asked to carve three totem poles for Fukushima, Japan in 2001.
