Bowen’s election season is off and running as two candidates put their name forward for mayor on Tuesday. August 30 was the first day to declare intentions to seek one of the island’s political roles up for grabs during the Oct. 15 election: mayor, councillor, and Islands Trust trustee. Shortly after nominations opened at 9 am, one of Bowen’s current councillors announced she would be taking a shot at the mayorship. “Here’s to a good campaign period for all candidates and our community,” wrote Maureen Nicholson, who is currently serving her second term as municipal councillor. Nicholson says she arrived at the decision after a lot of reflection. “I was concerned about someone inexperienced coming into the role at this time. I also felt given what needs to be done in the coming term that I was the right person for the job,” she says. Later in the afternoon competition surfaced as Andrew Leonard, who runs professional coaching organization The Phoenix Loop, announced he too was throwing his hat in the mayoral race.
