Bowen Island Garden Club learns how to grow climbers and vines with Su Rickett

Roll up your sleeves on Earth Day CHANTAL EUSTACE EDITOR

This Earth Day weekend, it’s time to clean out your junk, hug a tree and help out some bees. Stumped? Here’s three ways to join in. It’s Bowen Island Municipality’s “dump day” on April 21, a chance to clear away the big, awkward clutter. Bowen Waste Service provides large containers, available at the Bowen Island Recycling Depot (BIRD) for the drop off of residential waste. “We accept household items such as appliances, metals, rimless tires and car batteries, and objects considered too large for weekly garbage pick-up. Please place loose items in bags, neat and tidy,” says the municipality’s website, bowenislandmunicipality.ca/clean-up-days. Drywall is not accepted, it says, and fees must be paid in advance to

drop off household waste. Also on April 21, put on your walking shoes and roll up your sleeves. Join in on the island-wide, Clean Up Bowen, a chance to rid the ditches of trash. Organizer Karen Munro encourages people to pitch in, either around your neighbourhood or by meeting at the Legion, 9 a.m. on Saturday. “We need a lot more people to do a lot more of the island,” she told The Undercurrent. Email her karen@bowendogranch.com or just get down there and help out. You can also get into the spirit by learning all about helping mason bees with a free workshop on “the most effective pollinator,” at Davies Heritage Orchard at 11 a.m. Participants can enter to win one of six mason bee houses. More information here: tourismbowenisland.com/event/mason-bee-workshop.

Island scuba diver Adam Taylor’s short film, Howe Sound’s Glass Sea Sponges, was featured as part of last year’s Bowen Island Adventure Film Festival. The festival is putting out a call for submissions for the 2018 version. Filmmakers have until April 30 to do their final edits.

RCMP looking for SeaBus hero BRENT RICHTER NORTH SHORE NEWS

North Vancouver RCMP are looking for a local hero. Shortly after the 8:45 a.m. sailing of the SeaBus from Waterfront Station on April 12, police say a passenger suffered a seizure and went into cardiac arrest. “Witnesses stated his eyes rolled backwards... He stopped breath-

ing basically,” said Cpl. Richard De Jong, North Vancouver RCMP spokesman. “The unknown Good Samaritan jumped in and performed CPR, which ultimately saved the man’s life.” Paramedics were ready and waiting when the SeaBus arrived on the North Shore, and the victim did survive, De Jong said. “As in the movies, the Good Samaritan slipped away.” Continued page 9

Next time you’re about to hang off a cliff at Cape Roger Curtis or kayak to Keats Island, consider documenting it. The third annual, Bowen Island Adventure Film Festival is accepting submissions, through to April 30. “The focus is amateur athletes. It really is about everyday adventurers,” says Kiley Redhead, one of the festival’s co-founders. She says simply: “This is not about professional film making. This is about locals on Bowen, doing cool things on Bowen.”

That means anyone with a story and a camera (and some editing know-how) can submit a short film or slideshow to the festival for consideration. “What are we looking for? We just want somebody who wants to share their story on what they get up to on the weekends,” she says. “What do they do? How do they get outside and play? What does that look like for them?” There are already nine films accepted for this year’s event — to be held Saturday, May 26, at the Bowen Island Lodge — but she says, there’s room for more. “It really is just meant to be a

platform for people to share their stories of adventures on Bowen,” says Redhead. The past two festivals really showcased the island’s diversity, she says, with short films on everything from scuba diving to rock climbing to foraging. “The thing that we learned, that is so cool about Bowen, is how much diversity there is here in terms of activity,” she says. “People are up to really cool things.” For more information on this year’s event, and details on how to submit a film, go to http://biaff.ca/ submit.

A 40-year adventure at sea It was 40 years ago that Brian Biddlecombe left the corporate world behind and started Cormorant Marine CHANTAL EUSTACE EDITOR

Brian Biddlecombe stands next to one of Cormorant Marine’s boats on the dock at Snug Cove, and shakes his head, smiling. He and his partner, Leanne Laudrum, have just finished telling me about a trip they took the day before, waves high and weather wet, a story about buying a new boat, and getting it safely from Point A to Point B. They seem relaxed with this kind of nautical yarn, clearly at home on the water. Biddlecombe says, after 40 years at the helm of Cormorant Marine, he doesn’t regret his decision to leave a steady job on the mainland, to run a business on Bowen. “It’s allowed me to live on this beautiful island,” he says. “My kids are both here with their kids now. He recalls clearly his 1977 decision to trade corporate life for something less chartered. “In the early spring, a truly unique character on Bowen by the name of Norman Croft-Sleigh, who suffered from ‘Maritime Wanderlust’ decided to sell his water taxi business that he had started a couple of years earlier,” Biddlecombe says. “After a weekend of heavy imbibing, I thought why not?” And he bought the business, kicking off Cormorant Marine’s four decades in operation. Over that time, there’s been

“Something will happen with nature out there and I’ll tell family about it, ‘You should have seen what I saw today, it’s pretty spectacular’,”says Brian Biddlecombe of one of the things he loves about his life on the water. He and his partner Leanne Laudrum, above, fulfill a vital role on the island through Comorant Marine.

adventurous times at sea — like working with the Coast Guard, or helping the ambulance get patients off the island, or getting BC Hydro workers to the island in storms to restore power — as well as the humdrum of daily business, he says, like late-night water taxi trips to Horseshoe Bay with just one person on them.

Every trip is unique. “Something will happen with nature out there and I’ll tell family about it, ‘You should have seen what I saw today, it’s pretty spectacular.’” In addition to a taxi service with scheduled crossings, they offer charter services for things like construction crews, weddings and film productions, as well as assisting essen-

tial services, or emergency calls. Like on Comorant’s fortieth anniversary in business, when they woke up at 4 a.m. to a phone call from the ambulance, says Biddlecombe, to help transport a woman about to give birth. In this case, she made it across for the delivery on the mainland. But in the past four decades,

there’s been five babies born enroute — as in, on the boat, on the ocean — and Biddlecombe says, each new Bowen Islander has received lifetime Cormorant Marine passes. “Fortunately haven’t seen too many in recent years,” he says. For details on their many services and their complete schedule, go to cormorantwatertaxi.com.

A boat tour of Mannion Bay was in order last Thursday to take photographs of some of our most recently abandoned derelicts, which as fate would have it was PURRfect timing. Thanks to the wonderful front page “cat boat” article in last Friday’s Undercurrent, I like to think of that Friday the 13th as “cat day in the bay”, as there is no way the joint BIM/Friends of Mannion Bay remediation efforts will allow the bay to “go to the dogs”, as some irresponsible/uncaring boat owners would have it if they had their way and were permitted to continue their disregard, unchecked, for this iconic public area. This “boat problem” is a community problem, not just one that directly affects and infuriates Mannion Bay property owners. The substantial waste of BIM’s staff and council’s time; the complex challenges with which staff must deal; the enormous investment of volunteer Bay watchers’ time and the monumental expenditure/waste of taxpayers’ money affect the entire community. To coin a phrase, Rome, or in this case Mannion Bay, is burning, but we are not just going to sit back to watch and wait for the pile of ashes. And speaking of Rome, “it was not built in a day”, nor is anything on Bowen. Patience is a virtue which we have lots of so, thank heavens for our collective and persistent efforts. It is important and timely to inform and ensure both the public and the offending boat owners the situation is not being ignored, it is under constant surveillance. While the road to a solution is long and has its share of bumps and potholes, it will be travelled by “the team” in order to achieve our objective, being a bay that is free of problem boats which is pleasant to the eye, is not an environmental time bomb and is an area that is safe and enjoyable for everyone to use. Tax monies should be utilized in a much more productive and universally rewarding manner. Bruce Russell Friends of Mannion Bay

Bowen Island Resilient Community Housing will be presenting to council Monday morning for a collaborative project to build affordable rental housing on lot 3 of the community lands. Please show your support by writing to mayorandcouncil@bimbc.ca. For more details go to www.facebook.com/ BIRCHousing or birchousing.org.

Firstly, my hope is that Bob Bates will be given one of the old cabins that is not taken down, for his artwork. What was the urgency to demolish his studio? It would be an attraction in the park to have someone like Bob Bates working there, and the park board should be proud to have him there. Secondly, to solve the employee housing problem for local businesses, all those who make money from real estate development should cooperatively invest in building a house of affordable rental housing for local employees.

It’s not a wall. It’s public art To the editor: For the last two weeks anyone using the ferry watched the retaining wall rounding the corner of Cardena and Trunk Roads grow. Matt Dean with Twin Island (in photo at left), Ian Brown and various members of the public works department braved incessant rain to create another magnificent piece of “public art“ in the cove. Matt’s keen eye for form and proportion built a giant jigsaw puzzle which invites the viewer on a visual journey. Thanks to all who made it happen! HC Behm

Taking a bath in the woods, sort of CHANTAL EUSTACE EDITOR

Who knew? Forest bathing doesn’t involve nudity. It’s actually got nothing to do with washing dirty feet, exfoliation or hygiene in general. Doesn’t even involve water. And we Bowen Islanders do it all the time. According to some online sleuthing, it’s kind of like going for an ambling walk in the woods. Sound familiar? The idea, or term, “forest bathing,” comes via Japan, where it’s known as shinrin-yoku, or “taking in the forest atmosphere,” according to the website,www.shinrin-yoku.org.

And it’s good for you. It’s supposed to do things like boost your immune system, increases creativity and reduce stress. Also, it is catching on online. I found about 67,000 posts with the hashtag #forestbathing on instagram alone. So it seems we’re in the middle of a health trend and might not even know it. Because there’s really no place quite like Bowen for uninterrupted, relaxed, directionless walks in the woods. Take time this week, rain or shine, Earth Day or any other day, for a stroll in the one of our beautiful forests — just you and the trees and the ravens talking. Soap, shoes and shirts optional, of course.

Injured wild animals need special care CHANTAL EUSTACE EDITOR

Wild animals, like this deer on Bowen Island, require special attention and care. A CAWES workshop on Sunday will cover how to help injured wild life in need. Daniel O’Sullivan photo make it and had to be euthanized. “They were trying to help but they didn’t necessarily do the right thing,” she says. And she hopes the free event on Sunday will help people who have good intentions, in situations like this to know what to do — and in turn, help the animals in need of help. The free educational event runs from 2:15 to 4:15 p.m. on Sunday.

Wild animals in distress require special care and attention, says Susanna Braund of Coast Animal Welfare and Education Society (CAWES.) The group is hosting an expert from Wildlife Rescue in Burnaby, to share what to do when you encounter an injured wild animal, this Sunday, April 22 at Collins Hall. Spring is the right time of year to tackle this tricky subject. “This is when people on Bowen will be finding baby animals especially in distress,” Braund says. “It’s the breeding season so we will have birds falling out of trees, and then, if people find a fawn, they don’t know what to do with it, whether they should do something or not,” she says. “Or if they find a baby seal, they don’t know what to do with it.” Last year, an individual on the island found a goose with an injured wing and took it home to care for it, she says, and kept it in their bathtub for two days. “If only they had contacted CAWES, we would have been able to arrange to get the goose to the wildlife rescue within 24 hours,” she says. In that situation, the goose did not

DALE ADAMS SEGAL CONTRIBUTOR

I have just read Nine Birds Singing, written by Edythe Anstey Hanen, and I am left with tears of joy, sorrow, tenderness, longing, and gratitude. I have fallen in love with Maddie, the book’s protagonist. Nine Birds Singing is an inspiring novel of loving and losing, loving and daring, and the willingness to dance with it all. How grateful I am to dance with Maddie as she journeys on the pages of this book. It is a book of such intense colour and love that I had to take a breath and pause between chapters. Pausing was very hard because I did not want to put the book down. Hanen’s novel is a treasure trove of jewels — each chapter, each character, each moment, and each life to be savoured and taken again and again. This is a book that shows us what precious love and meaning live under the surface of our lives and our relationships, and more. Its graciousness, abundance and truths bless us all. Each page of

Bowen Island author Edythe Anstey Hanen will be reading from her novel, Nine Birds Singing, on April 22. Maddie’s story brings us to a reconnection, a glimpse of sacred light, and to an experiencing of the sacred promise that we are. Co-sponsored by the Bowen Island Arts Council and the Bowen

Island Public Library, the launch of Nine Birds Singing will take place at the Cove Commons Annex at 4:30 pm on Sunday, April 22. Edye will read from her novel, answer questions, and sign books.

What do Corsica, North Carolina, Nigeria, South Africa, Georgia (the one closest to Russia) and Bowen Island have in common? If you would like to know the answer to this question, come to Cates Hill Chapel on April 21and hear EarthSounds World Music Choir, directed by the fabulous and well travelled Karla Mundy with special guest, Bowen’s own Shari Ulrich. In the fall of 2017, due to her love of singing and experiencing music from around the world, Karla Mundy began EarthSounds choir on Bowen. The choir is a fun and adventurous group of new and experienced singers who join together every two weeks to explore world music and their own voices. Although Karla herself is not a Bowenian, her sister Keona Hammond — also a musician and choir member — has lived on Bowen for several years. In 2013, Karla founded Songroots vocal camp where many a singer has flocked to learn jazz singing, gospel singing, Corsican music, blues, bluegrass and more from Karla and a strong team of vocal professionals from Vancouver and North America.

She herself is a vibrant and soulful singer and lends her voice to many other bands, duos and trios in town. Karla produced Way Back a solo album, released in 2013. The recording spanned the blues, spirituals, folksongs, Appalachian ballads, and Bob Dylan songs. The concert on April 21 includes sampling of many of the different rhythms, tones and styles of music Karla has brought to EarthSounds choir. And, it gets even better! With the choir as her back up singers and performing some of her own solo songs, will be Bowen’s own and beloved Shari Ulrich. Originally a California girl, long settled on the west coast of Canada, Shari’s work has garnered two Juno awards, several Juno nominations, an induction into the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame, and a 2014 CFMA for English Songwriter of the Year. There will be something for everyone. With the enthusiastic energy of Karla, the spirited and soothing stylings of Shari’s music and the fabulous 30-voice choir, Cates Hill Chapel will be alive with astounding energy. Tickets are on sale now for An Evening of Food and Music by the Sea on June 5, a fundraiser for the Bowen Island Community School Association. The fundraising event will be held at the Vancouver Rowing Club. Tickets are sale at Phoenix. Money raised by the event will allow students — such as BICS students, Paige, Rose and Nikki — to have the opportunity to carve this cedar log into a welcoming artwork for the BICS Outdoor Learning Centre.

A Bowen Moment CHANTAL EUSTACE EDITOR

A wave of support spread across the country on ‘Jerseys for Humbolt Day’ on April 12, for the victims of the Humbolt bus tragedy. Here on Bowen, staff at the First Credit Union placed hockey sticks at the door and wore their jerseys to show their support. From left are Sophie Taylor Karis Clayton, Kevin Manning and Opal Ericksson.

The sun did peak out from time to time last Sunday — depending on where you were on the island. But at 9C, it wasn’t exactly summer. That didn’t stop Nathan Evetts from inflating an air mattress and paddling around Grafton Lake, using just a two-by-four. “It’s actually hard work paddling with this,” he said, holding up the piece of wood after a slow paddle to the shore to speak with The Undercurrent. I had turned my car around to investigate when I spotted him on the lake around 2 p.m. yelled out a few questions. Like what was he doing out there? Evetts said since his two friends were fishing on the shore — and he doesn’t usually catch any fish — he decided to pump up the mattress, go for a float. Wasn’t he cold wearing nothing but shorts? “It’s actually warmer when you lie down,” said Evetts, grinning. And he added: “When is this going to be in the paper?” His two friends, both in warm clothing like puffy vests and hoodies, laughed and kept on fishing.

Ayla, Alfie and Stephanie participated in last spring’s planting as part of the BICS garden program.

The summer sailing program for children will be one of the topics discussed at the April 24 annual general meeting of the Bowen Island Yacht Club.

Bowen digs into its farming roots SUSAN SWIFT BOWEN FOOD SOVEREIGNTY

How much productive land would it take to feed Bowen Island’s population of 3,600? How many farms on Bowen are actively producing for local markets? These are the types of questions that Bowen Food Sovereignty asks at monthly meetings — a chance to talk about all aspects of food security and sovereignty — discussing everything from soil and land policy to food distribution and the status of farming. Among the biggest challenges to food sovereignty is the availability of arable land as well as people with the knowledge and passion to grow food. The pressure to develop agricultural land for other uses contributes to the decline in the number of farms. In 2016, there were fewer than half the number of farms in Canada than in 1971 and overall farmland decreased by 6.4 per cent. Despite the loss of farmland and declining number of farms, the size of farms in Canada has increased by more than 75 per cent, revealing the trend toward larger scale, corporate operations. Interestingly, in B.C., four out of 10 farms are classified as small, or less than $10,000 in receipts. Not only is this double the national average, but more than two-fifths of these smaller operations sell food products directly to consumers.

On Bowen Island, we are fortunate to have many small producers who supply us with fresh produce, eggs and other products, like wool and jam. The 2014 Bowen Island phone book is an excellent reference on the history of farming on Bowen Island. And Bowen in Transition’s 2015 Green Resource Guide, includes a compendium of local food producers. But, the number of productive farms and growers on Bowen has decreased recently, according to Sarah Haxby, a member of the Bowen Agricultural Alliance — and the island’s volunteer Farmers Market coordinator. She notes that much of the historically farmed land is no longer being used to produce food. Part of the issue is that farmers are aging out. According to Statistics Canada, the average age of operators increased from 55.7 to 56.3 years old between 2011 and 2016. The good news is that the number of farmers under the age of 35 grew by three percent during that same time period. Sarah, who is also BICS School to Community Coordinator, also organizes BICS’ student garden organizes a program called, “grandfriends in the garden” which connects local farmers to the students to share their knowledge. She says that her personal mandate is to “support a new generation of kids who know where food comes from and how to grow it.” The farmer’s market starts up again, Saturday, May 12, 10 a.m. to noon, at BICS.

The best part of summer: Children learn safe sailing skills at Tunstall Bay KATHERINE GISH B O W E N I S L A N D YA C H T C L U B

Live in the sunshine, sail the seas and drink the wild air! If that sounds like fun to you, let me tell you a little bit more about the Bowen Island Yacht Club Learn2Sail program. Our mission is to build our community of Bowen Island sailors and inspire children and youth aged seven to 15, in the life-long love of boats and the water. We have been doing just that since 1987 — or 31 years of sailing stewardship — right here on Bowen Island. The love of sailing is instilled at a young age. Historically in the Learn2Sail program, our sail coaches went through the program, then became volunteers while taking the requisite Sail Canada courses. Then they become certified coaches themselves, thus continuing the evolution of young sailors, becoming young adults, becoming sail coaches. The program provides summer employment for eight Bowen Island sail coaches — with six volunteer coaches waiting in the wings to become a sail coach. They often echo the same refrain: “Teaching and volunteering for the Learn2Sail program is the absolute best part of my summer!” Day camps are offered in July and August at Tunstall Bay Beach between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Children learn safe sailing skills, play games and sail away to new adventures. Younger sailors explore Tunstall Bay on Optimist boats while older and more experienced sailors take Lasers out to Paisley Island and beyond. Every week ends with a wonderful, picnic lunch organized by coaches and kids on Onion Island and other island beaches, cementing friendships and celebrating the week’s achievements. Registration is now live, and we welcome you to come on board! Full information here: www.biyc.bc.ca The Bowen Island Yacht Club’s annual general meeting is Tuesday, April 24, 7 to 9 pm at the Tunstall Bay Community Association clubhouse. We welcome your attendance!

My Mama always told me... We know Mother’s Day isn’t until next month. But my mom always said: “The early bird gets the worm.” And I’m pretty sure that applies here, even though I personally do not advocate eating worms. We’re celebrating Bowen Island mother’s with their photos and wise words in our May 11th issue — and so we need your help. Here goes: Tell us your mom’s best (or most memorable/hilarious/ unique) advice, and send us in a photo of your mom by May 7, noon and we’ll do our best to include it in our special, May 11th Mother’s Day issue. So we can all remember important things like not to cry over spilt milk, that money doesn’t grow on trees and of course, waste not, want not. Look forward to hearing from you guys! E-mail me at editor@bowenislandundercurrent.com, subject “Mother’s Day” and we’ll do our best to get as many of your mom’s in the paper as we can. Thanks!

Police want to thank the SeaBus hero from page 1 Although it’s not a police matter, investigators would like to find the man responsible for saving the life of his fellow commuter. He may in line for a commendation or official recognition of some kind, De Jong said. The only description they have of the amateur life saver is that he was Caucasian with a slim build and was wearing yellow clothing at the time. Police are hoping the do-gooder, or someone who knows him, will be in touch at 604-985-1311.
