Windstorm wipes out Island power ALEX KURIAL Editor
AVENGERS ASSEMBLE! There was important business for these superheroes to take care of on the Lenora Loop last Thursday. But, for a change, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Ant-Man, the Hulk, and Captain America didn’t have to worry about saving the world, but rather ensuring maximum Halloween candy return in their bags (and wagon). Take a look through the paper to see the many other characters who made up this year’s colourful Halloween ensemble on the island. / Alex Kurial photo

Much of the island was left in the dark on Monday and Tuesday following a windstorm which blew out power to thousands. The Monday storm resulted in a littering of debris across Bowen, and even some downed trees and poles as high winds whipped throughout the island. While the majority of residents lost power at some point, the most serious outages - beginning Monday afternoon and lasting into Tuesday afternoon and evening - left about 1,700 local customers without power for a prolonged state according to BC Hydro numbers. Bowen was far from the only area affected, as the storm ravaged the Lower Mainland, Sunshine Coast and Vancouver Island. Overall BC Hydro said about 225,000 customers lost power, with the most affected areas being the North Shore, Sechelt, Surrey, and Victoria. The wide range stretched repair crews thin, prompting an alert Bowen residents without power would not see it come back overnight. By Tuesday morning trucks and crews began to arrive on the island to make their repairs, and by early evening power was restored to all neighbourhoods and another dark night was avoided.
