Preface Inleiding

At the end of October 2024, I spent over a week in Scotland to explore, understand, and experience the country. I invited my father to join me as my mental support, personal driver, and travel companion.

Starting from Inverness, we drove along the northeastern coast of Scotland and part of the eastern coastline. To witness the striking contrasts in landscape, climate, and urban development, we traveled through the Highlands toward the west coast. The vastness, tranquility, and silence were overwhelming. From the west coast and the Isle of Skye, we followed the fault line between the European and American tectonic plates back to Inverness, where our journey began.

We discovered remarkable places and delved into the history of the land and its landscapes ranging from almost Dutch-like scenery to wild cliffs and rugged, desolate mountain ranges. The breathtaking nature and the warmth of the people left a lasting impression on us.

Eind oktober 2024 ging ik ruim een week naar Schotland om het land te ontdekken, te begrijpen en te ervaren. Mijn vader vroeg ik mee als mijn mentale steun, persoonlijke chauffeur en reismaatje.

Vanaf Inverness reden we langs de noordoostkust van Schotland en een deel van de oostkust. Om de enorme verschillen in landschap, klimaat en stedenbouw te ervaren, trokken we vervolgens dwars door de Highlands richting de westkust. De uitgestrektheid, rust en stilte waren overweldigend. Vanaf de westkust en het eiland Skye reden we over de breuklijn tussen de Europese en Amerikaanse aardplaten terug naar Inverness, waar onze reis begon.

We ontdekten bijzondere plekken en doken in de geschiedenis van het land en het landschap, van bijna Nederlandse landschappen tot woeste kliffen en ruige, eenzame bergketens. De adembenemende natuur en de vriendelijkheid van de mensen maakten grote indruk op ons.
