ith warmer weather just around the corner, the kids in your household may start to get a little antsy. They know long days are on the horizon, just waiting to be filled with activities and adventures. But maybe this year your kiddos are yearning for something a little different. Maybe they’ve expressed a growing interest in art, or an equestrian competition piqued their curiosity about horseback riding. Maybe they picked up the clarinet this year for the school band and they want to take it to the next level before the fall. Whatever your kid’s passion, there are few better ways to help them follow it than a great camp program. Once again this year, it’s our pleasure to present you with the area’s most comprehensive guide to the best camps Colorado has to offer. No matter what your child’s interest, there’s a camp that will help them learn new skills, meet

new friends, deal with life’s difficulties and deepen their confidence. Beyond the specific skills a camp can teach, these programs can give kids a first taste of independence, a chance to be away from home. They get the chance to forge their own path, whether it’s for a day or a week or a month. Camp provides the opportunity for young folks to learn teamwork, to accomplish goals together with peers who may share the same interests, but also with those who have radically different interests and personalities. This is a chance for kids to learn how to be great communicators, to face their fears and meet people with diverse backgrounds. Colorado is home to hundreds of amazing camps that cater to any child’s interests and needs. So take some time to peruse this year’s camp listings from across the state. We think you’ll find it hard to read this impressive collection and not wish you were a kid again.

PLAY TO LEARN

Educational camps allow students to build confidence and knowledge through games

by Alexandria Kade

Educational camps keep the brain active and prevent “summer slide” by utilizing games to help kids learn.

he 11 weeks that mark summer break represent freedom: freedom to play, freedom to dream, freedom to forget everything learned during the previous school year. To counteract the latter, parents have the opportunity to send kids to educational camps or on field trips to continue the learning process all summer long. “The documented phenomenon whereby a child loses one day of information for each day they are out of school is called the ‘summer slide,’” says Alan Iguchi, owner of Mathnasium of Boulder. “During a single summer a child could very easily lose up to 3 months’ worth of math information learned during the previous school year. Our program helps the students both retain and build their math skills to get ahead for the upcoming year.” While the name “educational camp” might not sound appealing to a kid who wants to enjoy summer break, the camps with cool names help engage students in learning through games and other activities. Boulder Parks and Recreation offers BLAST OFF! 10 MARCH 3, 2016

Science Camp five separate weeks throughout the summer. Every day, students conduct a different experiment and work on building a rocket. Because the camp is based out of the South Boulder Recreation Center, campers also have the opportunity to go in the pool and canoe at Viele Lake, combining a sense of adventure with learning. By the end of the week, campers have a list of experiments, with instructions, to take home and repeat with family and friends. At Play-Well TEKnologies’ weeklong summer camps, every day is a Lego day. Framed as playing with Legos, kids will learn real world applications of engineering at a small scale. “Kids build cars in our camp and learn about axles and tires, and they learn that the tires on your car don’t hit the side of your car because that would cause friction,” says Brie Laffey, Play-Well’s Boulder area manager. “Then they go outside and look at mom/ dad’s car, and they see the tires really don’t hit the side of the car, and they never realized that before. They get really excited about real world application of what they’re building out of Legos.”

Another bonus of educational camps is the atmosphere. “We’re a very comfortable, safe environment of indoor exploration educationally during the summer,” Laffey says. She adds that Play-Well is a great experience for campers with with autism, Asperger’s or ADHD, because they can work with other students if they want but can also work independently if that’s what they’re most comfortable with. Mathnasium of Boulder tailors its program to each individual child. After an initial assessment of the child’s strengths and weaknesses, Mathnasium creates individualized curriculum; however, students also have the opportunity to play games with other kids to improve math skills. While Mathnasium is open yearround for math help, students can drop-in for open summer sessions 1:30-6:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Through both individual and group work, educational camps can provide kids with increased self-confidence and improved problem-solving skills. They get students out of the house and focused on the exploration of new ideas. “Another long-term benefit is success,” says Molly Langerak, program coordinator for BLAST OFF! Science Camp. “Kids also experience how to do something from start to finish. We’ll spend the week making and throwing primitive hunting weapons, playing games that help us practice sneaking and being invisible, and training our awareness to see and decipher the tracks and sign of the animals that live around us. Throughout the week we’ll learn what being a ‘’scout’’ entails, the ethics of the sacred hunt, how to work as a team, and how to use projectiles safely and respectfully. We’ll also tell stories, sing songs, play in the creek, and of course practice our aim. Everyone will get the chance to make and take home a few projectile crafts and will surely walk away a little sneakier than when they arrived. For Children 10 to 14. they’re developing friendships with other blind students that are from different schools. ... A great part of this camp is they just get to be kids, which is not always the case.” Batron loves to connect with the kids at camp — and he can really relate to them, as he is visually impaired himself. Originally from Maine, Batron learned about the Colorado Center for the Blind at a National Federation of the Blind convention. It was at this convention where he realized what he was missing. “I understood at that point that I could do anything, and even though I could see better than a lot of the people there, I couldn’t do as much as the people there,” Batron says. After attending the Colorado Center’s adult program in 2001, he joined the Center as a cane travel instructor and has since moved up to director of Youth Programs. Much like Batron, many campers like to return to work for the camp. “One of the nice things that really is cool about this program is that once these kids become 11, 12 years old, they want to become junior counselors, so they’re giving back to kids that are younger than them,” he says. Ca

ock climbing, horseback riding and whitewater rafting are not the type of activities normally associated with the visiually impaired or blind. However, at the Colorado Center for the Blind’s Summer Youth Camps they live by the motto “live the life you want” and with four different Summer Youth Programs offered, the Center focuses on teaching campers the abilities you can have when dealing with any amount of visual impairment. For the youngest campers, aged 5 to 11 living in the Denver Metro area, the Center offers a three-week program in June. The Confidence Camp for Kids is just that, a camp where visually impaired children learn to read braille, navigate with a cane, do chores around the house and gain the confidence to do many fun activities like horseback riding, swimming and hiking. Brent Batron, the director of Youth Services at the Center, believes this can be the most rewarding time for someone growing up with a visual impairment. “Some of these kids are being exposed to braille and using the cane for the first time,” Batron says. “The confidence that these kids are getting, I think that’s the biggest thing. Also friendships, a lot of times these kids we get from the Denver metro area, they’re coming from a place where they’re the only blind kid in the school, so

Timberline

Along with learning practical skills for the visually impaired, campers at the Colorado Center for the Blind’s Summer Youth Camps get to practice their adventure sports.

“They’ve had so much fun and learned so much and are so excited about it that now they, even at that age, are giving back, which I think is really, really cool.” Campers between the ages of 12 and 14 attend the Initiation to Independence program, a Monday through Friday program for three weeks in June. Here, campers get more chances to interact with blind and visually impaired adults who are in many different walks of life. Building on the independence skills taught in the Confidence Camp, these campers are shown how blind adults live their daily lives just like anyone else. “In the summertime ... we have probably about 100 blind people every day here in the Center, so they (campers) get these blind adults as role models also. And if the receptionist is blind and can do his job and use a cane and use braille, it’s empowering to these little kids to know they can do these types of things,” Batron says. For high school-aged campers, the Center for the Blind offers two programs: Earn and Learn and Summer for Success. These two eight-week sleep away programs aim to prepare children for the next step in independence. The Earn and Learn program offers lessons in resume development and interview skills, aiming to help campers earn summer paychecks. The Summer for Success program helps campers who may be going off to college and need to learn certain skills like taking tests, writing papers and handling large college classes. Living in the Center’s provided apartments also help campers gain the skills they need to live independently as they move forward. Both programs offer the opportunity to travel with the Center to a National Federation of the Blind convention to meet nearly 3,000 other blind and visually impaired people. The Summer Youth Programs offered at the Colorado Center for the Blind provide many different learning opportunities for the blind and visually impaired children of the Denver area. Those interested in attending should not worry because they will be surrounded and supported by people who have or still are learning the necessary skills to live independently. Learning there will give visually impaired and blind youth the confidence they need to move forward. MARCH 3, 2016 35

Kids can learn both indoor and outdoor rock-climbing at after-school, spring break and summer camps around Boulder.

BUILDING MENTAL, NOT JUST PHYSICAL, STRENGTH Boulder’s plethora of rock-climbing camps for kids

by Tommy Wood

T

here are a variety of kids’ rockclimbing camps in and around Boulder this summer for parents who want to get their kids both physically and mentally active. Climbing has health benefits beyond just getting children into shape. “Climbing is also a lot of problem solving,” says Alyssa Countway of the Boulder Rock Club. “There’s a big mental aspect to climbing. Not only are you problem solving, but you also have to deal with fear, concentration, all of that. Overall, it’s a pretty holistic approach to health.” Climbing teaches kids to approach climbing like a puzzle to be solved, Countway says. They learn to plan out routes ahead of time and know what BOULDER WEEKLY

KIDSCAMP

they’re doing several moves in advance. Eventually, kids become able to plot out entire routes before they even get on the wall. The Boulder Rock Club offers after-school camps for kids ages 6 to 8 on Mondays and Thursdays, starting March 28; ages 9 to 11 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, starting March 29; and 12 years and older on Fridays, starting April 1. They also have a spring break camp from March 21 through 25, where kids can climb anywhere from one to five days. The Rock Club features an outdoor boulder in addition to indoor walls, and Countway says many kids who attend their camps end up joining their yearround climbing clubs.

Other climbing gyms around Boulder offering youth camps include The Spot, which has a week-long day camp for kids ages 6 to 12 that runs every week from June 1 through Aug. 14. It also offers a year-round, after-school program every Wednesday and Friday. Also, ABC Kids Climbing offers indoor, outdoor and hybrid camps. The indoor camp, for ages 4-and-a-half to 14, runs weekly from May 31 through Aug. 19. The outdoor camp is every Monday through Friday for ages 7 and up, and the hybrid indoor/outdoor camp is every Monday through Friday from May 31 through Aug. 19 for ages 6 to 14. In addition to the mental and physical benefits, climbing also helps children with disabilities get physically active.

Livestrong, the foundation started by Lance Armstrong, extols the virtues of climbing for autistic children, who can have different needs that prevent them from engaging in many physical activities. Climbing helps autistic kids develop their motor skills and body strength. It’s also easy for amputee children to get involved, climbing with a harness and the strength of their remaining limbs. Dr. Rebecca Williams of Smart Climbing writes that the trial-and-error aspect of climbing teaches kids resilience and that it’s OK to fail if you keep trying: “Instead of thinking, ‘I fell off again,’ thinking, ‘falling off is good, it means I am trying hard’ might be more helpful,” she writes. Climbing also teaches children good breathing techniques, and how to stay calm under pressure, Countway says. “Just remembering to breathe while you climb. If you hold your breath, it’s gonna make it a lot harder. These techniques, they’re gonna help you grow. It’s mental, physical. It’s a lot more than just trying to get stronger.” MARCH 3, 2016 37
