ummer time is fun time, as the old rhyme goes, but it can also be a time of growth, learning and service. Many organizations throughout Boulder County offer summer experiences that focus on volunteering and giving back to the community. A longtime Boulder establishment, Thorne Ecological Institute, is introducing a new summer program this year. Their Stewards of Boulder program aims to start children on the path of environmental appreciation and action from an early age. “Our whole thing at Thorne is that before stewardship you have to love nature,” says Stephanie Muirhead, administrative executive of Thorne Institute. “That initial love of nature is in all classes, even for the youngest kids.” In Stewards of Boulder, campers work with local organizations and scientists to learn about the wide range of service opportunities available in Boulder County. They will also work on a fun, camper-chosen stewardship project in our community. By partnering with other groups and organizations, Thorne allows children to apply what they learn during the summer throughout the year and in a variety of ways. This is the first year that Thorne is bringing its stewardship program to Boulder, though the program has already proved popular at Bob’s Pond, Thorne’s Littleton location. Thorne offers a range of environmental programs for children 3 to 15 years old, all with the philosophy of “excitement to action.” Children are first encouraged to explore the outdoors and then to
Boulder Weekly
More than just a good time Summer camps and programs teach service, values by Katherine Creel learn what they can do to protect it. For more information on Thorne and Stewards of Boulder, visit www. thorne-eco.org. Thorne isn’t the only educational game in town, though. Wild Bear Mountain Ecology Center, based out of Nederland, also works to instill a love of nature in children. This year, Wild Bear is offering full-day workshops out of its center in Nederland, as well as half-day workshops based at Watershed School in Boulder. Founded in 1995, Wild Bear works with other local organizations, including the National Center for Atmospheric Research, to bring environmental education to the public. For the youngest campers, ages 3 to 5, Wild Bear offers parent-child programs in ecology, while older
Kids Camp Directory
campers, ages 10 and up, can experience fly fishing, field photography, weaving, primitive skills and more. Visit www.wildbear.org for more information. Another great way to help care for Boulder’s beautiful open spaces (and make a little cash, as well) is Boulder’s Junior Ranger Program. This youth employment program incorporates job skills, stewardship and environmental education. Open Space and Mountain Parks has been providing a means for students to engage in meaningful work that makes a difference to our open lands, parks and community since 1965. Teens 14 to 17 years old from Boulder and the surrounding area are hired through a selective application process to work as crew
members for five weeks during the summer. Junior Rangers perform a number of vital tasks, including general trail maintenance, noxious weed removal and clean-up work. The OSMP relies on Junior Rangers to accomplish a major portion of the general maintenance on system trails. For more information, call 303-441-3440, or visit http:// bit.ly/junior-ranger. If developing an appreciation of sustainable and local living is important to you and your child, then a hands-in-the-dirt experience at a local farm can be a great choice. At summer “internships” children learn that hamburgers don’t come from McDonald’s and apples don’t come from the grocery store. Farms like Cure Organic Farm and Sunflower Farm offer programs for children to learn about where their food really comes from and the complex ecology of small, local farms. If your child loves trips to the farmers market, they’ll love seeing how all that bounty is produced. For more information, visit www.sun flowerfarminfo.com or www.cureor ganicfarm.com. For young animal lovers, the Longmont Humane Society offers the Kids and Critters Day camp for children 7 to 12 years old. The best way to care for a pet is to learn to be a responsible owner, and this camp teaches a range of skills, from interpreting dog and cat body language to clicker training to small animal handling. Even better, all proceeds from the camp benefit the Longmont Humane Society. For more information, call 303-772-1232 ext. 264, or visit http://bit.ly/kidscritters.

ftentimes, going off to camp is more difficult for the parents than it is for the child. Sure, kids will probably get homesick at times if it’s more than a day camp, but it’s the parents who are usually preoccupied with their children’s comfort and security while they are away from home, often for the first time. Local camp experts offer an array of advice for parents who want reassurances that their kids will not only have fun at camp, but will be also safe. Of course there is the necessary gear, but perhaps more important is the mindset. Gail Walker, co-owner of Colorado Mountain Ranch, which hosts summer day camps, recites the list of items that parents are advised to send with their kids. Of course, sunscreen is at the top of the list. “They need to arrive lathered up and bring it with them,” she says, adding that a hat comes in close second. “And the parent needs to chat with the child about wearing it.” Walker also lists the (full) water bottle, a fanny pack with snacks and any medication (which under state law must be checked in with camp staff, not carried by the child). Since Colorado Mountain Ranch has horses and is in mountainous, rocky terrain, she also includes long pants, socks, closed-toed shoes and “a light jacket, no matter how warm it is.” But just as important, Walker says, is that the parent and child be ready for camp mentally. Sometimes it is good to send children to a camp that one of their friends is attending as well, so that they have built-in companionship. Brooke Cheley-Klebe is codirector of Cheley Colorado Camps, which has been running multipleweek summer camps in the Estes Park Valley for 90 years, ever since her great-grandfather started the operation.
Boulder Weekly
Safety first Experts offer tips for kids — and parents — to feel secure by Jefferson Dodge To ensure that kids — and parents — are emotionally secure enough for camp, she recommends that children go on a couple of sleepovers at friends’ houses before camp if they haven’t been alone away from home before. Cheley-Klebe also recommends that parents introduce their kids to others who will be attending the camp in advance, if possible, so that they can get to know each other a bit beforehand. Preparing the parents can be even more important. “We find that parents are more campsick than the kids are homesick,” Cheley-Klebe says. In addition to ensuring that their kids have the right gear — hiking boots, fleece, rain gear — parents can ease their minds about their child’s safety by making sure they pick a camp that is accredited by a reputable group, like the American Camp Association. Cheley-Klebe also urges parents to not be shy about asking questions about safety. “If you’re nervous about some-
Kids Camp Directory
thing, don’t feel like you’re being an annoying family. Just call the camp,” she says. “Too often people think, ‘I don’t want to be that parent.’ But that’s what we’re here for. We want it to be a great experience for every single child. We don’t mind taking that phone call.” Parents should quiz camp staff about their emergency plans and inform staff about their child’s needs — whether those are medical or emotional, like significant events that have affected them in recent months. “It can be so helpful to the staff to have insight on what that child’s last year has been like,” she says. Cheley-Klebe says too many reminders of home can be emotionally draining for a child. She cites the example of the camper who began to dislike the family photo by his bed that constantly made him homesick and the parent who simply sent so many packages and letters that the child was never able to be completely independent and gain the confidence of being on her own. “Don’t smother them with
reminders of home,” she says. Laura Tyson, founder and executive director of the Women’s Wilderness Institute in Boulder, which runs both day and overnight girls camps in the outdoors for ages 8 to 18, agrees that a good first step toward a safe camp experience is to pick an accredited camp. Her institute is accredited by the Boulderbased Association for Experiential Education, which specializes in wilderness-oriented and other experience-based camps. She also agrees that parents should take an active role in talking to camp staff. The night before Women’s Wilderness Institute camps begin, parents are invited to a meeting where “they can get to know us and ask questions.” Tyson suggests that parents look at the age, maturity, training and experience of a camp’s staff, because it makes a big difference in the quality of a program. For example, she says, a wilderness-based camp should have staff who are certified as Wilderness First Responders. The type of training and experience a camp’s counselors should have depends on the kind of camp it is, Tyson explains. She says another area a parent should examine to ensure a safe camp experience is any transportation handled by the camp. It may not seem like much, but having a camp staff member drive a van full of children can be one of the biggest risks during any camp — especially if the driver is a camp counselor who is barely out of his or her teen years. She says parents should inform themselves and inquire about details, such as the size of the vans that are used and whether gear is loaded on top or hauled behind in a trailer, for instance. “Transportation — that’s something we take really seriously,” Tyson says. For more information about camp accreditation and safety, visit the American Camp Association at www.acacamps.org.

Imagination Circus Arts Camp is a chance for kids of any skill level to literally join the circus! The camp runs Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for an entire week. It is a jam-packed week with tons of fun and energy. Each child picks his or her act of focus as a “major.” They then follow a schedule that changes each day to fit the needs of that particular group of campers and their skills. The schedule includes “major” rehearsal times, as well as group finale rehearsals that include everything from acro-stunting and minitramp to Chinese pole and teeterboard. In between, we work on theatre and performance techniques. The last day of the session, the campers rehearse the fulllength show, and then perform the onehour show for their friends and family! Sessions are July 18-22 and July 25-29. For ages 8-16, $285 per child, per session.

Often during the heat of the afternoon, Dragon groups take a break from questing to play more relaxing games or to dip their feet in the creek. On Fridays, after the Risen Lands Bazaar, Dragon groups have the option to play the much-anticipated Ambush Games, which is a capture-the-flag kind of game over the scope of the entire park. Griffon Quests (Half-Day Programs). These half-day Adventure Quest programs last either from 8:30 a.m to 1:30 p.m. or from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., depending upon the site. These quests are open to kids age 6-16, and are focused almost exclusively on Adventure Quest. Because there isn’t enough time in the afternoon to do much questing, the kids really want to make the most of their mornings, and the Quest Leaders know to pack in a lot of adventure!

W
hen a child goes off to camp, she is going to learn about the wilderness, about herself and about other children her own age. Whether those children are also of the same gender is her parent’s decision, and it’s not an easy one. With the abundance of camps available in Boulder, and throughout Colorado, adding another aspect to the decision-making process may be daunting, but it is an important one to consider. Children of all ages get different benefits from being at a camp that is strictly all-male or allfemale, or one that includes both genders. Lisa Tretout, M.A., a developmental play therapist at the Boulder Learning Co-op, sees the benefits of both. “Before age 10, a co-ed situation is probably great and fine,” Tretout says. “But I could see how after age 10, when they’re in their pre-adolescent developmental age, how having single-sex camps would be just fantastic.” After age 10, Tretout says, boys and girls begin thinking about each other, rather than themselves, a situation single-gender camps rectify. “I’ve seen it in my practice, girls can sometimes be bizarrely trying to get attention from boys, and they’re not even sure why. They don’t even like these boys. For them to have a week or two where that’s not even on the radar, I could see that being very beneficial,” she says. The Women’s Wilderness Institute, a camp specifically for girls, has the same thing in mind when designing their programs. “Girls are looking at such different issues in their adolescent and pre-teen years than boys,” says Executive Director Laura Tyson. “In an all-girls situation, girls are much more likely to really own their experience and take credit for doing what they do. They’ll step out of gender roles, carrying the pack or setting up the tent.”
Boulder Weekly
Single-gender or co-ed? by Chelsea Long
The Women’s Wilderness Institute offers four- to 12-day programs for girls ages 8 through 18. The courses are outdoor- and wilderness-based and include expressive arts that foster creativity. “I think the primary difference that most single-gender camps are addressing is the fact that boys and girls have very different developmental differences and needs,” Tyson says. Co-ed camps, though, take a different approach. “Kids learn a lot more about real-life applications, about how to work together and relate together, where they might not have that opportunity in a single-sex setting,” says Mary Schmitt, the program director at the Colorado Youth Program, which serves both genders. CYP focuses on an outdoor education and outdoor recreation, with service-learning aspects involved. The campers get to sleep under the stars, in gender-specific tents. “An argument that people make for a single-sex camp is that it takes out a lot of the pressure for kids, where I’d flip that around and say co-ed settings are an educational opportunity for kids to learn a tool that they’re going to be using for the rest of their lives,” Schmitt says. And while Tretout agrees with that, and runs her own co-ed camp in the summer that’s aligned with the
Kids Camp Directory
research and therapy she does all year, she also sees the reasoning behind relieving some of that pressure. “Co-ed camps are great. It’s just that I see them mirroring the experience in the school environment. A summer camp that’s one sex only becomes a special place where all of the dynamics that occur during the school year, don’t.” Lorene Wapotich, of Feet on the Earth Programs, agrees that singlesex camps have a place at certain points in a child’s development. “I think it’s really important to think about the needs of the child at what ages, and with the intensification of gender roles during the adolescent period, it’s a really good time period. People think that I advocate separating the sexes for their whole lives. They’ll say the world is co-ed, and so is the rest of their lives. We’re trying to create an environment that supports kids development in healthy ways.” There’s also the aspect of romance between campers — one of the first issues that comes to mind for a parent considering a single-sex camp. “Our motto is that camp is strictly platonic,” Schmitt says. “Kids feel that because of that, the pressure is taken off and they can really become friends with each other. I’m
always surprised by how many crossgender friendships develop out of our programs.” The friendships formed at singlegender camps are just as strong. “One of the big things that girls are going through in teen and preteen years is a tendency to be who they think people want them to be. Building friendships, and being able to be who you are authentically in those friendships, is really important for girls’ self-esteem,” says Tyson. It ends up becoming a decision for parents as to what’s important: mirroring the real world and learning to interact with the opposite sex, or allowing their children to participate a more structured environment that can help develop their own personalities. For boys, though, it’s a decision that’s often made for that parent. Most modern single-gender camps are girls only, and that’s the case in Colorado, as well (though some camps, like Sanborn Western Camp’s Big Spring Ranch, do offer boys-only camps). “I think part of the reason for that is that often mixed-gender camps are addressing boys’ needs, so there’s not as much of a need for boys’ camps,” Tyson says. Co-ed camps, according to Tyson, often stress the important aspects of working together and teach campers how to compromise in a situation. That’s not something most girls need, she says. “That’s really useful for boys, but for girls it misses the point, because they’re already giving themselves up and compromising,” she says. “They need to express what they want, and then work on a collaborative solution.” This may be the best advice for your family, as well. Consider the needs of your child, whether she may need a break from boys and a chance to develop her own identity, or if she could benefit from the skill set that develops from working with the opposite sex.

The long goodbye Making summer camp easier for the shy child by Kaely Moore
A
s summer camp season approaches, many parents are looking forward to getting their kids active and out of the house. They might not, however, be happily anticipating the clinging and crying that sometimes accompanies a child’s first few days in a new environment. No parent feels good about saying goodbye to an unhappy child. Sanam Pejuhesh, a child psychotherapist at Boulder’s Play to Heal, says that kids need a good sense of predictability when they enter into a new situation. Parents should do whatever they can to prepare their children for summer camp by keeping them informed along the way. Pejuhesh says giving kids a feeling of control can alleviate many of their fears as they wander into the unknown. How does the child want to say goodbye? What should mom or dad do when they come to pick the child up? Letting kids dictate certain details, especially upon separation and reunion, often makes them more comfortable with the idea of leaving, Pejuhesh says. “The anxiety is coming from a place of fear, so if kids are able to have some say in the way things are, it will be a lot more predictable and a lot easier to transition into,” she says. Bernadette Gimpel, a licensed marriage and family therapist in Boulder, says that making sure the selected camp will be a good fit for the child’s interests is one thing parents can do to help him or her branch out and have a more enjoyable experience. She also says that signing the child up with a friend can allow for an easier adjustment. With introverted children, sometimes role-playing is a good way to help practice starting and maintaining

conversations, Gimpel says. Parents can rehearse with their children, giving them questions to ask other kids and advice on how to appear more approachable. “It’s like any other phobia or anxiety,” she says. “The more practice they get at having success in a social situation, the easier it becomes for them in their lives.” Pejuhesh says that validation is important in empowering children and subduing their fears. Parents should acknowledge the scariness of going to new places and meeting new people, but they should also remain positive about the experience, reassuring their kids and letting them know that they are going to have a good time. It is also helpful, she says, to inform camp counselors that a child may have a hard time approaching other children. As adults, counselors can serve as a watchful eye, providing kids with an increased feeling of support and safety. “The more they feel safe, the more they’ll be able to explore and put themselves out there,” Pejuhesh says. She goes on to say that it is important for parents not to label their children as “shy,” and to resist pushing them too hard. It may be more challenging for some kids to interact in a social setting, but it can become even more difficult if the child is singled out. “Our society puts a lot of value on extroversion, but there’s something so intrinsically valuable and special about the thoughtful, quiet, introspective introvert,” Pejuhesh says. “The goal is to teach kids to love themselves for who they are, not to strive to be someone or some way that doesn’t come naturally to them.”
