here are seminal moments in every child’s life that will echo throughout the rest of their days. No matter where they go or what they will do, they will carry these lessons with them, holding them close to their hearts and letting them shape their minds. And what better place to let those moments happen than at summer camp? Within these pages you’ll find summer camps for every age, ability and interest, from outdoor camps that

will teach your child necessary survival skills to indoor arts and crafts where they’ll come home with painted plates that you’ll cherish long after they’ve left the nest. Some of these camps will be familiar; others are brand new. And with the 2020 Summer Olympics taking place this July and August, you can bet your little one will dream of a medal around their neck as they take their first steps toward becoming a world-class skateboarder, BMXer or swimmer. Don’t worry;

there’s a camp for that. There’s a camp for just about everything. Your child can stride the boards and recite Shakespeare’s iambic pentameter or pirouette on the hardwood all summer. Or perhaps they’d rather learn to navigate nature’s majesty or get lost in the life of the mind. But don’t dwaddle, camps fill up fast. You’ve been a parent for some time now, and you probably knew that, didn’t you? That’s why we made sure to get this year’s edition of Kids Camp in your hands as early as possible. Enjoy.

Riccio makes sure to expose students to a variety of contemporary literature. “I know they’re reading Heart of Darkness and The Great Gatsby in school; they should also be exposed to a hot new 20- or 30-something [year-old] author,” Riccio says. “It’s important to share with them what’s going on in that scene.” Riccio shares works like Friday Black by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah, In the Dream House: A Memoir by Carmen Maria Machado, and the late Lucia Berlin’s A Manual for Cleaning Women. During the workshop young writers develop their own ideas and let their imaginations run wild from there. After, they’ll do peer revisions, readings for family and friends, and learn about the submission process, even long after camp is over. “We do treat them as bona fide emerging contemporary writers, so we give them the same respect and belief and tools as if we were running a MFA,” Riccio says. “They have the experience of what it’s like being an author, how to be a workshop participant, and give good feedback. “We teach the language of supportive constructive feedback, which is usually a setting they won’t find themselves in until college. It’s a skill to learn, and it’s helpful creating that vibe that we’re a community of writing peers who support each other’s work.” With so many options, it’s never been easier to nurture your child’s creative mind.

anette Riehle would like to tell you what your kid’s day will be like at Steve & Kate’s Camp in Boulder, but she won’t know exactly until that day is over. At this camp, the campers are in charge. “At Steve & Kate’s we put kids in the position to decide what they want to do and how long they want to do it,” says Riehle, “SelfDirector” at Steve & Kate’s Camp at Manhattan School of Arts. The original Steve & Kate’s Camp opened in California in 1980, and now there are 38 locations nationwide. Unlike summer camps scheduled with age-defined activities, Steve & Kate’s campers choose their fun from a broad menu. They can hang out in interest areas from the Arcade to the Media Lab, the Sewing Salon and the Bakery. They can head outside for sports or chill in the Library. “For instance, say you want to sew something. We instruct about safety, but we don’t formally teach how to do any activity. We have pre-cut tank top and apron pieces, full-size sewing machines and instructions available on an iPad,” Riehle says. Campers are encouraged to experiment and make mistakes. “They might end up sewing a pocket shut. We smile and problem-solve with them. It’s really up to the kids,” she says. In the kitchen, there is pre-made dough the kids can shape and bake with various ingredients for a treat they can eat or take home. Sometimes a chosen activity turns out to be less than captivating. “This isn’t school, so there art a lot of corrections along the way,” Riehle says. Some campers who are used to being micro-directed are challenged by freedom. “There are definitely children who are used to being instructed and are waiting on us. We’ll give them ideas, but mainly it’s: ‘Jump right in!’ The important thing is to get to know the children personally to help the ones that are a little hesitant,” Riehle says. A day pass at the camp comes with lunch and multiple snacks (not to mention sunscreen). “Kids can basically eat what they want when they want. They order lunch in the morning, but they can change their mind,” she says. Vegan, gluten-free pizza, salads and lunch specials such as pasta and burritos are available BOULDER WEEKLY

in the Market. Campers can also stop in for whole fruit, yogurt tubes, crackers and frozen snacks. A rolling lunch period minimizes interruptions to projects. “When you treat kids like small adults and let them drive, power struggles go away. They always have choices. It almost eliminates behavior problems you sometimes have,” Riehle says. Activities are not divided by age. Most of the campers at Steve & Kate’s Camp in Boulder are kindergarten through fourth Campers at Steve & Kates grade. “After fifth Camp in Boulder grade, it starts to are encouraged to structure their days peter out as kids by choosing their develop special own activities. interests. The older graders become mentors to the younger kids,” she says. Steve & Kate’s Camp is famous for Pie Day, which is traditionally every Friday at camp. There are competitions with campers and staffers. The winners get to pie the losers in the face with non-dairy whipped cream with one caveat. “The campers always have to ask first — ‘Can I pie you?’ Some kids pie themselves, and of course everybody eats it,” Riehle says. Making a mess is an intrinsic part of the day at this camp. Families send extra clothes along with the campers. “It’s messy, but fortunately, we have a water feature every day, so they get washed off. We have different outdoor activities set up. They love the three-lane bungee run, the Nerf day, and we have a great slip-‘n’-slide that’s a lot more fun than the old ones,” Riehle says. Riehle has been an educator, sports coach and arts camp counselor. She’s also a mom. “I was particularly attracted to Steve & Kate’s because it’s so flexible. Some campers stay all summer. is open. If a child is sick, you can use the pass another day. If you travel, you can use it at another camp,” she says. That kind of flexibility for parents is highly unusual for summer camps, and the campers seem to like it, too. “The biggest compliment we get is when we hear kids tell their parents, ‘Don’t pick me up until 6,’ when they arrive at camp at 7:30 a.m.,” Riehle says. A volunteer “buddy” system (with no more than two children to one adult) ensures that children receive plenty of personal, one-on-one attention. And, while children are encouraged to share memories and express their grief, Camp Comfort offers fun, too. The camp includes plenty of opportunities for recreation including swimming, ziplining, horseback riding, arts and crafts, fishing and hiking. The total cost to attend Camp Comfort, including all workshops, recreation, meals, snacks and overnight accommodations, is $175. We offer a generous scholarship program to ensure no child will ever be denied an experience at Camp Comfort. outdoor camps A CASE FOR OUTDOOR EDUCATION

A former camp leader reflects on lessons learned in the great outdoors

by Emma Reynolds

T

his summer, I encourage you to send your kid outside. Now, why should you listen to what a 20-something without kids thinks you should do? Because for the last seven years, I was one of the lucky ones who got to work as a trip leader, camp counselor and outdoor educator. I worked with middle schoolers, high schoolers and college students — together, we hiked in the Adirondacks, kayaked in Vermont and rock climbed in New Mexico. Life outdoors is different. It’s hard. Outdoor education students have to build a shelter, cook meals and stay warm using only what they and their group are carrying with them. The bones of life are simplified: here is a tent, a sleeping bag, a stove. Here is a pot, one spoon, a pair of boots. Here is your life for the next few weeks. Freed of the literal confines of buildings and the more metaphorical confines of the expectations of friends, school, parents and society, outdoor education invites children to try a new way of being — a different version of themselves. How do they feel on top of a freshly summited mountain? What do they choose to talk about after they’ve been with the same people for 10 days? What brings them joy after a long hike? What do they feel allowed to do — or be — out here in the woods? Life outdoors is so different than life lived indoors (or with the option of the indoors) that it can quickly invite change and reflection. The sudden simplicity and openness allows students to access a more authentic version of themselves — a version that is less clouded by myriad things to do and people to please. When the day’s priorities are simplified from the normal routines of life (school, homework, chores, BOULDER WEEKLY

KIDSCAMP

social media, video games, etc.) to setting up and breaking down camp and hiking, students are given more time and space to examine what matters — what is worth keeping, pursuing and cultivating. In a nutshell: Sending your kids outdoors allows them to discover a life with a little more space and opportunity. In the outdoors, this self-definition and exploration come hand-in-hand with group formation and dynamics. Outdoors, a child’s whole day (and night) will be spent with the same group of students. This closeness creates strong bonds that are hard for children to find in other camp settings today. Our lives are so fractured that finding a consistent community — outside of the family unit — within which to grow is incredibly special. Part of this growth comes from children learning when to lead and when to follow. Outdoor education trips are filled with opportunities where children are invited to lead: Hiking at the front of a group, deciding how much rice to cook, making the final call on where to pitch a tent. But each of these is also an opportunity to follow. Unlike more traditional camp counselors who are the set leaders of activities, outdoor trip leaders are facilitators. When I was training to be a leader in college, our director told us to act as street sweepers. “Sweep the streets clear of the impediments of safety and belonging. But don’t tell your students which street to go down.” Trip leaders will make sure your children feel secure and cared for, but they

won’t tell them exactly what to do. This unique facilitation also allows a supportive and close group dynamic to form as students are challenged throughout the trip. Growth and adversity are built into outdoor education trips. The COURTESY OF EMMA REYNOLDS

instinctual fear of living outside — away from the necessities and distractions of our everyday world — is the first and most important challenge to push through. One must let go of the common belief that living outdoors for a few weeks is going to be perilous or boring. The world that exists beyond the sound of the highway and the sight of the familiar isn’t a dangerous one; it’s simply an unknown one. The unfamiliar is one of the through lines of life, and we must show our children when they’re young that the unfamiliar is not going to harm them.Yes, you can sleep in a tent.Yes, you will summit the mountain. Go ahead; take your first step.

Outdoor education camps get kids outside their comfort zone, allowing them to experience life with a little more space and opportunity.

ACTION SPORTS CAMPS

FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF OLYMPIANS

by Tom Winter

W

hen Bob Dylan crooned, “The times they are a-changin’,” he certainly wasn’t thinking of the Olympics. But with a slew of action sports poised to take center stage in Tokyo 2020, the summer Olympics will be unlike any you’ve witnessed. With events like half-pipe and slope-style skiing now in the winter Olympic mix, as well as the explosion of skateparks and bike pump tracks and other alternative sports locally, what’s a hip parent of a future Olympian to do? Well, probably not sign their kid up for Little League (not that there’s anything wrong with that). For Boulder parents with actionsports-oriented kids looking to mix it up in the summer camp world, and who also sneakily think little Joey is Olympic material (hey, you never know), here’s how to get hip to Boulder’s brave new world of action-sport camps and other kid activities that may lead to a gold medal future. Or, more realistically, offer an easy, fun and safe introduction to the action sports world. Climbing Sport climbing will make its debut in Japan at the 2020 Summer Olympics. The event will consist of three disciplines: lead climbing, speed climbing and bouldering. Medalists will be determined upon the total performance in all disciplines. Check our listings of ABC Kids Climbing Camps, EVO Rock + Fitness Climbing Camps, as well as Boulder Rock Club (303-447-2804, boulderrockclub. com). They offer kids the chance to enter the vertical world of climbing with indoor and outdoor instruction. Instruction starts for athletes as young as 4 in their tiny tots’ program, with youth and teen programs also available. Their five-day indoor/outdoor camp offerings for children and teens are complimented by a girlsonly weeklong camp that takes place in August. 34 FEBRUARY 20, 2020

Skateboarding Featuring both street and park skateboarding, the sport will bring a distinctly X-Games vibe to Tokyo. For athletes, there are 80 spots available (40 for men, 40 for women), with each event featuring 20 competitors: three from the World Championships, 16 from world rankings and one from the host, Japan. Check out Avid4 Adventure in our Outdoor section, which is also a great place to look if your kid is interested in... Surfing Surfing will take center stage in 2020, as Japan hosts the event at Tsurigasaki Beach. Given that we don’t have an actual wave pool in Colorado (yet), the best way to get hip to the Centennial State’s closest equivalent to surfing is stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). Surfing’s close cousin will develop the boardsport skills to not only surf Colorado’s river waves, but be able to sort out your balance when you drop in on an ocean wave. BMX Long an X-Games staple, BMX biking debuted in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Action-packed and a spectator favorite, the inclusion of the sport into the Olympic mix marked the beginning of the new wave of Olympic action sports. There are plenty of bike-related camps, including Singletrack Mountain Bike Adventures and Woodward Copper (see listings), not to mention 303 Dirt (970-749-3957, 303dirt.com). 303 Dirt offers a combination of group skills coaching, “day away adventures” and other skill camps and seminars for both BMX and mountain bike athletes. Coaches include mountain biking legend Myles Rockwell, 2000MTB downhill world champion, and Miriam Van EK, who can help kids dial in their dirt jumping skills. A highlight is their sixth annual Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day at Valmont Bike Park on June 8.
