The many wonders of winter

T

he days are getting shorter and colder, inviting us to drag out the slow cooker, top off a steaming cup of cocoa and kick up our fuzzy-socked feet in front of a fire. But adventurous Coloradans aren’t the type to sit around for long, and with the snow-capped Rocky Mountains in our sun-drenched backyard, who could blame us? In fact, there’s so much to see and do out there it can be a little overwhelming — but don’t worry. We’ve got you covered. It gives us great pleasure to present you with this year’s Winter Scene — a calendar detailing the amazing concerts, festivals and events along the Front Range and across the state that will help you fill your winter days and nights. And in case you were wondering, we didn’t forget the slopes. With 25 ski resorts across the state, a person could fill the entire winter with nothing but powdery, tree-dodging, mogul-jumping, pipe-riding, downhill ad-

venture. We’ve given you a breakdown of each resort, from A-Basin to Wolf Creek, so you can figure out which resort will cater best to you needs, whether that’s affordability, proximity or adrenaline-pumping, backcountry journeys. So while we endorse a hearty stew, a cup of cocoa and a good sit by the fire, we encourage you to get out there and explore this beautiful state, whether you’re tearing fresh tracks in the backcountry of the Elk Mountains, taking in a concert at the Fox Theatre or dressing like a Viking for Breckenridge’s ULLR Fest. We hope our Winter Scene guide helps you find something new this winter, an adventure that will create a lifetime of memories and smiles. So go ahead and toss some veggies in the slow cooker and get out there and play. Soup’s on when you get back. Respond: letters@boulderweekly.com November 20, 2014 3

athletes from more than 70 nations will descend upon Beaver Creek for the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championship. To prepare for this, the resort has replaced the Centennial Express Lift with a new high-speed, state-of-theart combination lift and polished the women’s speed course. Skiers will also enjoy the addition of 24 fully automated snowmaking guns on Gold Dust trail. The flagship peak of the Aspen/Snowmass ski family, Aspen Mountain is famous for its black diamond terrain, which has made it a beloved ski destination for locals and travelers alike since 1947. Glades, bumps and steeps dot the inbound ski areas, but Aspen Mountain Powder Tours will gladly hook you up to make some fresh tracks on the backside if you’re looking for an out-of-bounds experience. Of the added acres, 400 are served by two new lifts, and 143 are hike-to terrain. Visitors can also play on the resort’s well-loved groomers and bump runs.

Located just 75 miles west of Denver, Copper Mountain is an ideal destination for locals and travelers. Copper is one of Summit County’s largest ski areas, with more than 2,400 skiable acres including gently sloping runs on the west that become progressively steeper as you head east. Copper is currently undertaking a multi-year enhancement of the resort’s high alpine skiing and riding experience, including expanded terrain, improved lift access and additional cat skiing operations. Last year, the resort upgraded and replaced the Storm King lift and installed Celebrity Ridge, a new surface lift at the top of the Sierra chairlift. CRESTED BUTTE Peak: 12,162 feet Base: 9,375 feet Vertical Rise: 3,062 feet Average Snowfall: 300 inches Skiable Acres: 1,547 Lifts: 15 Trails: 121 % of Beginner/Intermediate/Expert Terrain: 27/57/16 Bowl Skiing: Y Powdercat Skiing: N Resort: Y Day Ticket Price: $69-$103 Adult/ $62-$95 Teen/$55-$85 Sr. /$38-$58 Child Opening Date: Nov. 26 (Free) Hit up the opening day at Crested Butte and ski free all day long — that’s right. No money. And this year, Crested Butte has some new offerings on and off the slopes to sweeten the pot. Upgrades to the tubing hill and snow bike rentals provide new ways to hit the slopes, and thinning on gladed runs will offer intermediate skiers more options to glide between the pines. Slopeside rack systems promise to streamline your transition off the mountain and into the lodge.

Granby Ranch features night skiing and short runs, with all trails beginning at one point and ending at the base to keep families together. While Granby Ranch recently expanded its intermediate terrain at the expense of some beginner runs, families will still appreciate the lack of maniacs screaming down the slopes. As with other smaller ski areas, Granby Ranch is a great way to spend a day as part of a weekend in the towns north of Winter Park. Chrissie Hynde is no pretender. Well that’s not exactly true. In fact, Hynde is the only constant member of Pretenders since the group formed in 1978. At this point in her career, Hynde is truly a legendary figure in rock and roll history. She is one of the women who helped usher in the acceptance of hard rockin’ women some 35 years ago. But don’t get to thinking that Hynde is selling tickets these days based on reputation alone. She is still pushing her musical envelope and is an ongoing force of nature. If you can make it to this show, do it.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 16 Willy Porter — Doors: 8 p.m. Daniels Hall, 71 E. Yale Ave., Denver, 303-777-1003.

Willy Porter can flat out play the guitar. In the early part of his career, which began in 1990, he was best known for his intricate finger picking style. The Boston Globe wrote that he possesses “the Olympian speed of Leo Kottke bolstered by rootsy vocals.” These days Porter concentrates far more on those rootsy vocals and has become a beloved signer/songwriter. His lyrics are a bit offbeat, sometimes funny, sometimes sad, but always worth considering. If you haven’t caught his act, this is a great chance to see him up close and personal.
