Warming up to winter

A

s the first snowflakes of the season begin to fall and the days begin to shorten, it’s easy to think it’s time for hibernation. But winters in Colorado are far from dark and dreary. The winter months are peak season for local symphonies and theater companies. In Boulder, the winter brings the Boulder International Film Festival to town. Mountain towns and ski areas blossom with events and the kind of high-altitude attitude that keeps us wanting to come back for more. November and December bring a bevy of holiday events to lift the spirits. January follows with literary and theater events to keep your brain in high gear and concerts to keep you doing more dancing than it takes to keep warm in the ski lift line. And by February and March,

it’s high ski season, a time for days in the snow that wrap up with ski town charm. It’s too much to keep track of alone, so we’ve done the work for you, and rounded up events from around town to across the state and put them in one location for your planning ease. We open this year’s Winter Scene with a roundup of Colorado’s ski areas, updating you on the latest at some of the greatest ski areas in the country. That’s followed by a calendar of concerts and events across the Front Range and a statewide events calendar to set you up to make the most of your winter weekends. May it lead to many a wintry night filled with entertainment, warmth and light. Respond: letters@boulderweekly.com November 14, 2013 3

Go 100 percent natural at Monarch. In a world of man-made snow, Monarch eschews the snow guns in favor of waiting on the hundreds of inches of snow that regularly fall across this resort. Skiers make the most of them by tapping the cat skiing tours to access a ranging area of trees and steep bowls or hiking to an additional 130 acres of extreme terrain. But the lift-accessed trees are also touted as some of the most enjoyable in the state — and often untouched. POWDERHORN Peak: 9,850 feet Base: 8,200 feet Vertical Rise: 1,650 feet Average Snowfall: 250 inches Skiable Acres: 1,600 Lifts: 5 Trails: 63 % of Beginner/Intermediate/Expert Terrain: 20/50/30 Bowl Skiing: N Powdercat Skiing: N Resort: N Day Ticket Price: $59 Adult/$51 Sr./$30 Youth Opening Date: Dec. 12 Perched on the side of the 10,000-foot-high Grand Mesa in western Colorado, Powderhorn Mountain Resort is a sleeper and a treat. The resort has snagged some of the best snow in the state in recent years and the place rarely has lift lines, allowing you to make the most of your day. And you’ll want to spend at least part of it in their glades, wide open aspen groves that often go untracked.

But for those moments when nature needs a little help, the reosrt has added new snowmaking tower guns. This year, there are also new grooming machines and a new six-person high-speed chairlift designed to improve top-to-bottom skiing. For a walk on the wilder side, the San Juan Untracked, formerly The San Juan Ski Company, runs cat skiing and snowboarding operations out of the resort that access 35,000 acres of bowls, cliffs and chutes. It’s unique, small, challenging — it’s basically the independent craft brewery or the farm-to-table restaurant of skiing. It’s a single lift or a helicopter ride, then a steep drop down the backcountry, full of chutes and drops. Expert guides help find powder stashes even days after the last snowfall. Love them or hate them, TSO is one big show. This tour is coming to the Pepsi Center and is being billed as the last chance to see the band’s classic rock opera The Lost Christmas Eve. Prepared to be wowed — or at least sensory overloaded. When TSO hits the road it’s a big deal. They bring a $20 million-plus production that has played to more than 7 million people in 80-plus cities, selling more than $280 million worth of tickets. No wonder Billboard named them as one of the top touring acts of the past decade. For tickets or more information go to www.tickethorse.com.

Friday, November 22 Frozen Dead Guy Days March 7-9 Nederland, 303-506-1048 This quirky world-renowned festival in Ned celebrates the dead guy who resides under dry ice in a Tuff Shed. No kidding. One-time Nederland resident Bredo Morstoel didn’t much like the idea of dying. So he decided he should be frozen so he could come back later when we had advanced to the point where we could cure what ailed him at the time of his demise. But like a lot of us, he lacked the mega bucks for first-rate cryogenic technology so he just opted to be kept on dry ice in a metal shed. We don’t know if Bredo’s plan is gonna work, but the good citizens of Nederland have decided to celebrate their frozen dead guy with one of the world’s most unusual festivals every year just in case. Lots of craziness at this one. For more info and a schedule of bizarre events go to frozendeadguydays.org.

Annual 1940s and ’50s White Christmas Ball December 7 Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum, 7711 E. Academy Blvd., Denver This December, the White Christmas Ball will return to impart a little bit of that ’40s and ’50s charm on its guests for a fourth year. This year’s special guest is ’50s rock legend Wanda Jackson. The ball takes place at Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum, which will be decorated to transport guests into a wintry scene from decades past. When you aren’t experiencing the past through WWII artifacts at the museum or reliving the early days of rock and roll with Wanda, you can dive into the Christmas spirit with some open-fire chestnut roasting with Santa or watch a re-enactment of the classic film White Christmas. Tickets to the event are $40 if purchased in advance. For more info and tickets visit www.1940sball.org.

101st Steamboat Springs Winter Carnival, Feb. 5-9 Steamboat Springs Resort, 2305 Mt. Werner Circle, Steamboat Springs, 970-879-0740 Don’t go crazy indoors. Come help the good citizens of Steamboat celebrate 101 Years of Winter tradition. Seriously, this whole festival started a century ago as a way to help locals cope with cabin fever in the middle of a long winter. These days this annual celebration includes a variety of wacky events like cowboys racing down the mountain or getting hauled through town on skis behind horses. No, that doesn’t always work out as planned — that’s why you ought to come watch the craziness. There is a lot to do at this festival for the whole family, and all of it is fun.
