Roméo et Juliette | Boston University Opera Institute

Page 1

A NOTE FROM THE DEAN OF BOSTON UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS

When you arrived here, you were greeted with William Shakespeare’s words. To hold as ‘twere the mirror up to nature. Spoken by Hamlet, this line signals a pivotal moment—a play within a play—that exposes the truth of a dastardly deed.

The Bard inspired the design of this extraordinary building. Canted windows reflect the city. It is a reminder that the arts can help us better understand our society.

After the performance, I encourage you to experience this “mirror” in action. It is extraordinary, especially as the sun sets and the MBTA trains pass behind you.

Romeo & Juliet is better known than Hamlet. It has been adapted for every medium. Many of us have our favorite versions (perhaps Franco Zeffirelli or Baz Lurman’s films, or stage and screen adaptations like West Side Story) but there is always something new to appreciate and discover with each interpretation.

Almost 120 years ago, Roméo et Juliette, a new opera, premiered in Paris and dazzled audiences. It affirmed the power of Shakespeare’s tale while unleashing a new set of possibilities beyond the spoken word.

I am glad you are here. We built this theatre for you.
