Spontaneous Celebrations have shown us that it’s truly the people, working together in communities, that make big things happen. They’ve certainly been an inspiration for us, which is one reason we are so thrilled that our nonprofit, BRAIN Arts, was asked to program this year’s late-night afterparty. The Boston Hassle show-booking arm of BRAIN Arts does over a dozen DIY shows a month. They’re always a wild mix, but tonight we’ve pulled out all the stops. Kick things off with Old Wave’s country-style dance party, listen close as hip hop hound Lewis M bestows beat-based enlightenment, experience Western Mass diva Mal Devisa’s sweet, soulful lo-fi realness, JP trio The Channels’ weird noisy groove, and, finally, the unparalleled hypnotic, microtonal rock of Horse Lords, coming from Baltimore just to blow you away. It all happens 8 PMMidnight for a $10-15 suggested donation (all proceeds go to BRAIN Arts/Spontaneous Celebrations). The event is 21+ (sorry young friends), but the all-day fest is all-ages, as always! Come out and celebrate JP, spring and each other! -Sam Potrykus

Spontaneous Celebrations: Wake Up The Earth! Saturday 5/2 Here in Jamaica Plain, birthplace of this very paper, there’s a legendary festival called Wake Up The Earth. Started 36 years ago by uninhibited artists and activists whose collective, Spontaneous Celebrations, continues to work tirelessly to preserve the radicalism and diversity of JP, WUTE celebrates everything that makes our neighborhood special. People take back their streets each May to enjoy the offerings of a plethora of local food vendors and musicians, and an epic parade led by dancing monarchs in costumes or on stilts. Meanwhile, collectives, small businesses, nonprofits and intrepid individuals set up shop all the way down the Southwest Corridor to share their projects with the community. The whole day is pure magic, but we owe it to ourselves to give props to the many volunteers and sponsors who put countless hours into making it a success. WUTE’s miracle vibes resonate throughout our city in a positive and powerful way, and whenever you pass by Stony Brook Station, even on a frigid winter day, you can feel the warmth of the flame that it keeps burning all year long.

BOSTON REPRESENTS AS SOCIALISM CONVERGES IN CHICAGO ON 7/2-7/5
“Socialism 2015” is a four-day conference put on by the International Socialist Organization that brings together over 1,500 socialists and radical activists from around the country to take part in discussions about Marxism, working-class history, debates, and strategies for organizing today. Every year, the conference aims to be a place where activists can share lessons from their struggles—with topics ranging from the boycott, divestment, and sanction campaign for Palestine, to the fight for LGBT liberation, the Fight for $15, the struggle to stop the destruction of the planet, the fight against racism, and more. With well over 100 meetings, the weekend will feature leftwing authors and thinkers discussing the critical debates of today, as well as meetings on the hidden history of working-class and socialist struggles. The Boston Branch of the ISO will be mobilizing people to Chicago, so if you’re interested in coming, please email keeganxobrien89@Gmail.com. Boston’s art community embodies these qualities, absorbing the current condition of art, music, performance, writing, and design, and spinning them on a new axis. The Wheel, a new online gallery, aims to showcase the innovative efforts of these students. If you’re an undergraduate or graduate student working in the creative arts, The Wheel wants to know what you’re doing. REMEMBERING LILLY KATE CHRISTOPHER Last month the Hassle family lost our friend and fellow volunteer, Lilly Christopher. A sophomore journalism student at Emerson College and a volunteer with The Hassle for the past 2 years, Lilly came to weekly meetings, documented shows and contributed killer flyers. Not only did she make great art, she brought a positive energy and enthusiasm that is truly rare, even in a large collective such as ours. Lilly really got it. She was very passionate about our culture and was a very active member of it. She will be deeply missed by her friends and fellow volunteers, and remembered as a radical artist and lover of the counter culture. Thanks for everything, Lilly <3 -Sam Potrykus

Mammies in space helmets outfitted with feathered headdresses. Since the 1970s, James Montford has collaged provocative symbols to ex-plore racial identity and class struggle, presenting uncomfortable images in bizarre contexts. Montford specializes in grimly comic collages, with elements of magical realism in the vein of Sherman Alexie. Come hear the artist and the exhibit’s curator, VERA INGRID GRANT discuss his work on May 21 at the Boston Center for the Arts, 539 Tremont St. It’s worth noting that Montford is a teaching professor of art history at Rhode Island College, and has written about his ethic of audience engagement. Nia King
As a self-described “young punk” in Boston, Nia King could be found perusing the shelves at the Lucy Parsons Center or the Papercut Zine Library, and frequenting shows at venues like Brighton’s House of Sufferin’ Succotash. In these spaces she absorbed the city’s DIY culture, found an artists’ community in zines and music, and first encountered Colorlines, a news magazine addressing issues of racial injustice. King was already forming her identity as a writer, artist and activist. It didn’t take long for the young punk to take up the pen and begin writing zines of her own. Says King, “Self-publishing definitely helped me find my voice at a young age and process a lot of stuff around being mixed-race, racist microaggressions, and passing as white when it all felt very raw and urgent.” Her work has since evolved and grown to encompass a blog, a monthly podcast (each episode of which is transcribed for the deaf and hard-ofhearing audience members) and a self-published collection of artist interviews, Queer & Trans Artists of Color: Stories of Some of Our Lives, which hit the stands this past summer. Both her book and her podcast, We Want the Airwaves, present an extensive collection of conversations with innovative minds challenging social and political norms, while also providing an incredible resource for the artist striving to make work as well as a living. (In fact, she has a whole podcast episode dedicated to the issue of artists working for free.) Her advice to artists seeking resources? Make connections. “Start with who you know and work from there,” urges King. “It will also really help illuminate where some of the boundaries between communities exist.” To date, King has conducted and documented interviews with over 40 queer and trans artists of color — and there’ll be more to come. Tune into her podcast this month and you’ll hear her conversation with TextaQueen, an Australian visual artist working primarily with fibre-tipped markers. King now resides in Oakland, but she’ll be back in town for an east coast tour to promote her book (a second edition of which is already in the works). Catch her at Makeshift Boston on May 4th! www.artactivistnia.com - scout hutchinson
New Zineland Papercut Zine Librarian and lady of liberated literature Sarah Rigatoni unleashes a local history lesson in zine form called “The Original Boston Bruins: A brief history of the bear dens at Franklin Park.” The spot in question raises a bunch of questions. Once a point of pride for the Franklin Park Zoo at it’s opening in 1912 only to become completely abandoned , find out who it’s furry residence were and why they lost their home. Today they stand grandly and somewhat abstractly, hidden at the top of a hill off a beaten path in Franklin Park, with no public purpose. The veteran zinester spent the past two years uncovering newspaper clippings, pics and even took the time to learn about zoo ethics and the treatment of bears in captivity. All her findings have been put into print and will be available at the zine release bbq. Where? Where else. - ceek
Nugs of Knowledge Somewhere between poet and playwright, Sarah Kane lets her audiences fend for themselves. Having suffered a personal loss of faith, her fourth play CRAVE was a departure from her typical heavy-handed stage directions opting for a minimalist approach to narration overall. This May 1st and 2nd at 8pm you can catch Machine 5 Theatre Works’ production of it over @ Green Street Studios in Cambridge. $20/$15 students. SOMERVILLE OPEN STUDIOS (SOS) is one of the most established of all open studios, which happen year-round, throughout town by neighborhood. This year’s is May 2nd & 3rd from 12-6pm and continues to allow the public to know thy neighbor while gaining a better understand/ap-preciation of how artists work. Click around www.SomervilleOpenStudios. org to see who’s there. Knock, knock. If you’ve got some long limbs and fashion is your thing, Cambridge Local First’s fashion show, THE LOOK OF LOCAL is looking for ladies to make clothing come to life on the runway Tuesday, May 19th from 6-9pm @ Workbar in Central Square. Get in touch with Alexis@CambridgeLocalFirst.org to see what’s what. If strutting your stuff holds no appeal to you, just show up and check out some local designers. CALL FOR WORK - The NAVE GALLERY is looking to showcase the work of local ladies emerging in the art scene for their upcoming exhibit RECLAMATION. This is all about women reclaiming their roles in our fucked up society and they’re looking for work that exemplifies the female perspective and narrative. Details at NaveGallery.org/wp/ reclamation-cfe/ with the deadline on August 1st, 2015. - ceek

OLD WAVE
JUST LIKE CATCHING LIGHT IN A JAR
MIDDEN LEAVING RECORDS (2015) A midden is a pile of refuse. This album (this three-hour album) called MIDDEN is a gigantic pile of wobbly outcast funk. Miniature funk bits composed of bass, electric piano, and drums. Sometimes there’s no piano. Sometimes other sounds invade. Brief clips just long enough for anti-groove to be established and then the rug is pulled out from under each small thing. All of this sounds like it was recorded in the tunnel system beneath Las Vegas. Maybe that’s what this is? The music of the tunnel people of Vegas . . . an untrue thought, though it actually makes sense (to me anyway) . . . Naw, SP-MOLD is Matthewdavid, the producer behind releases on BRAINFEEDER, PLUG RESEARCH, and LEAVING RECORDS (his own label). These include collaborations with the likes of SUN ARAW and rapper SERENGETI. Matthewdavid, and thus SP-MOLD, is not the creator of funky, dusty breakbeats. However, he IS the (prolific) creator of off, slightly broken, and funky subterranean breakbeat notions. With Midden, Matthewdavid unloads a dump truck of weird funk on the world. Via LEAVING RECORDS, and FREE no less. Three hours of washed-out, shakyhands, deflated funk. I’ve only been able to listen to “2012” thus far, but really, just listen to this. It’s been putting me in a great mood for days now. The record is FREE to download. All three hours of it. Do this. Do your work / school work / shitty shit to this shit. It will elevate your game. I don’t understand how it’s getting me exactly. All I know is that it is getting me. Intoxicating weirdness. You’re gonna love it. Favorite moment: the coyote solo. -Dan Shea
SELF-RELEASED (2015) How great that in 2014 a bona fide cosmic Americana band can emerge on the underground music scene. Has me hopeful that certain music traditions, seemingly lost to time, can be celebrated and even grow to relevance once again through the cultural movement at hand. It must be powerful, of course, and it must be genuine, and that is what we have here. Old Wave is a story, a psychedelic folk yarn. When it rains, it’s pourin’ joyous melodies and rich, heavenly harmony. When it’s cold, they wrap you in a blanket of warm chordal textures. Every day starts and ends with the sun, at least. The guys in Old Wave sing sincerely, spinning a web of poetry about everything from work to traveling, and feline companions to the (unfortunately) oft-under-honored verbal contract of promises. It’s groovy, honest-to-goodness country rock. Old Wave are local dudes through and through. As members of the original Whitehaus Family (and extended family) they epitomize the positive, funky-music lovers of the area and collectively possess a huge, unmesswithable JPness. I work in the thrift/charity field with two of em, and on various creative projects with all four, but when I hear Old Wave, it’s like I don’t even know these guys anymore. It appears that in the past year my friends have all but transformed into Neil Young, Jerry Garcia, Rick Danko and Levon Helm. If this seemingly-impossible metamorphosis intrigues you, then you’ll pick up on what they’re putting down. Theyre just nailing it! Paying tribute to the deep, beautiful history of American folk music from Laurel Canyon to New England, these dudes are coming together to make blissful, original music. Just wait for their next record, in which the foursome’s collaborative songwriting and jam-banding pushes them further into “next level” territory. Read the rest at BostonHassle.com -Sam Potrykus

LITTLE STAR
Félicia Atkinson is a musician and visual artist who graduated from Beaux-Arts de Paris. Known primarily for her work as Je Suis Le Petit Chevalier, A Readymade Ceremony finds her abandoning some of the warmer indie and psych trappings of that project for experiments in texture, laptop-based electronic noise, and textual cutup techniques. The results are mostly very positive. Spoken and sung bits in French and English are taken from a variety of sources, including extracts from Improvising Sculpture as Delayed Fictions (Félicia Atkinson, 2014), Recherche de la Base et du Sommet (René Char, 1955), and Madame Edwarda (Georges Bataille, 1937), along with some random texts lying around while Atkinson was playing, mostly from the Italian magazine Mousse. The standout track is “L’oeil,” where Atkinson breathes a hushed, intimate intonation into Georges Bataille’s visceral, erotically charged writing while static and noise swells, swirls, and shifts over a 10-minute runtime. “Carve the Concept and the Artichoke” is another favorite, in which an opaque and mysterious dark-ambient soundscape gives way to discordant, abrasive piano and drum machines. The emphasis on French literature stretches back to an interest Atkinson’s been developing since her teens, a period in which she also first became aware of some of the musical influences on this record, such as John Cage and Morton Feldman. It's in this regard that A Readymade Ceremony is most interesting. By reexamining influences from her past, Atkinson has managed to create a record that represents a stark forward progression from her earlier works. -John Bittrich
Enter – William Apess: a brilliant and charismatic Pequot Indian educated in white schools; a traveling Methodist preacher, activist, poet, and author who meets the Mashpee in 1833 and learns of the wrongs against them. On May 21 1833 the Mashpee hold a council, adopting Apess into their tribe as Minister. A letter drafted to Harvard College requests the dismissal of Rev. Phineas Fish, appointed as missionary to the Mashpee without their consent, who for two decades has abused his office and the tribe for personal gain. A second letter to the Governor & Council petitions a redress of grievances and plea for selfgovernment, declaring the laws governing the Mashpee lands and people to be unconstitutional, including the sanctioned extortion of the Mashpee’s natural resources. STORY HI
Within this “Mashpee Nullification,” as it came to be known, is an ultimatum, which was also posted about the Cape – after July 1 1833, no white men may harvest wood or hay from Mashpee land. In open defiance, on this very day the Brothers Sampson of Barnstable are confronted by Apess and others as they load freshly hewn logs into carts. After a verbal exchange with Apess, the Sampsons leave peacefully but with an empty cart, vowing to press criminal charges against the tribe for interfering with their spoil. When the Overseers hear of the confrontation, rumor of a “Wood Riot” and fear of an imminent violent insurrection is spread to the authorities and media. Governor Levi Lincoln prepares to muster a militia but first sends a representative to address the Mashpee in their meetinghouse, who peacefully provide him a daylong account of their trials with the whites. The representative promises a legislative hearing to consider the Mashpee petition. Undermining this positive step, the day concludes with the Barnstable County Sheriff issuing a warrant for the arrest of Apess for trespassing and inciting riot – a backwards indictment indeed. A handpicked jury sentences Apess to 30 days in jail, further agitating relations and exciting the press and public. The Mashpee petition was read aloud before the legislature in January 1834, under the unprecedented protest of several representatives. A week later a Mashpee delegation is invited to speak to the public before a packed State House Hall of Representatives. There Apess delivers a profound speech on the moral obligation of government to uphold justice, from which many a legislator is moved to reflection on the flawed policy towards native peoples. Shortly thereafter passes the Mashpee Act of 1834, forming a semiautonomous Indian District of Mashpee. In May 2007, descendants of these Wampanoags became a federally recognized Tribe, the tenth in New England. Neil Horsky • horskyprojects.com
Uncomfortableness is not only mirror raising lyrics, but also going against our expectations. On “Happy January” Little Star subjects us to over a minute of droning noise that builds over itself into a wave of brutality. The stark violence of this track hits harder when coupled with the wide eyed confessions found across The Romantic World of Little Star. Coming out of the daze we can digest the track a number of ways, but maybe it is just the other side of the story; the devastation to the beauty of existing in this world and The Romantic World of Little Star. -Joseph Katz
THE COMO MAMAS
OUT OF THE WILDERNESS 7” DAPTONE RECORDS (2014)
CHARLIE
KELLEY’S GIRLS ONE HAND SELF-RELEASED (2014) The Boston underground scene is addicted to noise-rock music. No, really—anyone who’s spent a few months or more in certain basements or bars around Boston would respond to this with a resounding “duh.” Charlie’s Kelley’s Girls not only feeds that addiction— it seems likely that the 4-song EP by the Jamaica Plain trio was inspired by it. Charlie embraces the same ferocious, almost atonal guitar lines that have come to be a trademark of seminal Boston faves Guerilla Toss, along with frantic, screaming vocals and bass lines and drumming that can go from controlled and plotting to full-on maniacal in a millisecond. It’s the musical equivalent of walking through a haunted house (not the tacky kind). However, Charlie is a trio—and their compact size makes their music inherently more minimal. Rather than the thick, chaotic, almost avant-rock-orchestra sound we’ve come to know and love from G-Toss, the songs on Kelley’s Girls are closer to the roots of postpunk: they’re sharp, bratty, and have just a smidge of a pop influence. Am I even allowed to say that? But when you find yourself tapping your fingers along to “Davud Linch,” you’ll agree. Find Charlie playing around town, and check out Kelley’s Girls streaming on the Hassle website. -Sarah Moylan
The fledgling Massachusetts Congress of the 1780s, in their paternal wisdom, charged themselves with the problem of the Mashpee Indian tribe of Cape Cod. The Legislative Act of 1788 granted State-appointed overseers total command of the Mashpee’s economic affairs – the power to tax, manage natural resources and trade, and to indenture servants including children. The Act of 1789 prohibited teaching literacy to the Mashpee under pain of death.
Little Star is a Portland, Or threepiece writing emotionally charged songs dripping in an intimacy which battles against the violent resistance of completely relinquishing ourselves to insights of sensitivities. Simplified, pop songs with a sinister twist. Little Star puts insecurities on blast embracing them with lines like “If I could just tell you how I feel once and for all I could sleep at night, but it’s hard to be myself,” only to immediately crush the sentiment under shredding guitar. Standing in our own uncomfortableness for extended periods is not enjoyable. Maybe this is why across The Romantic World of Little Star confessions are followed with playful outs. The band builds on “Attention” pleading personally for anyone and expanding outwards to universally plea for the complete focus of everyone. Our attention fully invested Little Star goes silent. No more words only a rift ridden into a fade out.
THE COMO MAMAS are a trio of deeply soulful female singers from Como, Mississippi. Last fall the group released a 7” record, however, where the soaring, earthy vocals of the Mamas partner with the Menahan Street Band to create that specific brand of gospel that I have never been able to find or get enough of. I’m talking R.H. HARRIS post–SOUL STIRRERS, I’m talking the STAPLES SINGERS, the PILGRIM TRAVELERS (w/ LOU RAWLS). I’m talking exquisite use of repetition! I’m talking the impassioned vocals of gospel meeting the backbeat of rock ’n’ roll/soul. SAM COOKE, Gospel’s crossover hero/villain, gave the world a nice chunk of this special kind of thing via his SAR RECORDS as well. Mostly though, as rock ’n’ roll happened, and R&B and gospel became intertwined with it (the synthesis of soul) . . . gospel was a loser. Tastes moved fast toward secular music, and it’s not hard to believe that the God-loving hardcore gospel performers and fans in turn chose to shun that backbeat. Devil’s music, right?
And listen, I’m no friend of God, but human beings’ passion for a ruler on high has inspired some amazing music (and sure a bunch of shitty shit, and even some good shit). “Out of the Wilderness” is a gospel standard of one kind or another (I couldn’t find any writer credit on the Internets), and the Como Mamas version is untouchable. A little piano and organ, some excellent guitar playing, and a funky backbeat create a smart, simple framework for these three rea women, led by Ester Mae Smith’s up-front and inyour-face delivery, to hang their amazing voices upon Let's get these MAMAS to Boston. -Dan Shea

PERSPECTIVES by KEIRA HOROWITZ and CRONOS (TIMELORD) You need advice? Ask Keira & Cronos: tardyeagle@tardyeagle.com or anonymously at tardyeagle.tumblr.com/ask
I live in a shit tripledecker with 7 roommates, work all the time, AND my rent is still about 75% of my monthly income. What can I do to get by? KEIRA: I met someone who was actually a secret shopper once and she didn’t seem any happier than the rest of us schmucks. (I’m assuming you looked at those spam emails in a moment of hopelessness too.) Here’s the thing: you are getting by. So that’s worth celebrating. I hear you can go on the internet and ask people to pay for your stuff. And the people pay for it. Then you have to, like, give them a mixtape or go to their house and play the ukulele or something. Sounds promising.
M M C IC DO HA GN EL AL D
CRONOS: CRONOS suggests pursuing your current lifestyle preference and trajectory in a more rural setting. The scenario you have described will be actionable, reasonable, and productive when relocated to farmland. If you don’t have a talent for animals or tilling soils, you can keep hammering away at your dreams until they dissolve into microcrystals and are released into said soil. On the fifth full moon of the year, perform a small ceremony at the site of dissolution to call forth whatever spirit you wish. Tell it what you want, and—this is important—allow it to work.
Why is it so hard to remember things? KEIRA: I think we are expected to keep up with a lot more than is humanly possible. I once worked as a faculty assistant, so I basically spent my days as someone’s memory. I did a lot of things in the background to make them look like they remembered stuff—everything from names to statistics to who that Senator from Illinois was. (It was Obama. I said, “He’s going to be the next president” and the professor laughed at me. On my last day I snuck into his office, climbed up on his antique desk and danced.) Most of us don’t get assistants. Write everything down. Accept that sometimes you will forget. Forgive yourself. You should know I was wearing blue boots on that desk. It’s important for the visual. CRONOS: Your higher self is not interested in remembering all of the dumb details you think you care about. It’s hard because the YOU of you is making it hard on purpose. Concern yourself with what the spirit wants, and you will find there was never any problem to begin with. Remember this, though: memory causes the active destruction of the original timebased event. When the brain is used as a repository for a series of events, space-time transmutes to a tangle of sense-emotion, which is essentially blind and senseless to objective truths. Some would argue that there are no objective truths, but CRONOS recognizes three: 1. CHIPS AND DIP 2. Self-knowledge is the afterbirth of memory: some people eat it later, but it never tastes good. 3. The snow glows white on the mountain tonight Not a footprint to be seen. A kingdom of isolation, and it looks like I’m the Queen The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside Couldn’t keep it in; Heaven knows I’ve tried Don’t let them in, don’t let them see Be the good girl you always have to be Conceal, don’t feel, don’t let them know Well now they know Let it go, let it go Can’t hold it back anymore Let it go, let it go Turn away and slam the door I don’t care
10 Things Never Say You Should
to Someone With Food Allergies by ROB CREAN
1. What will happen if you eat some by accident? In the words of Yoda, “Either do or do not; there is no try.” In other words, there are no accidents. When you say this to someone with a food allergy, you’re basically asking, “If I attempted to murder you right now, what are the chances I could get away with it?” and that’s a pretty creepy thing to say to anyone, especially on their birthday. 2. So, what’s the deal with allergies anyway? I mean, is it spelled with one “L’ or two? Just because someone happens to suffer from a food allergy doesn’t make them your personal spellchecker. I mean, seriously, don’t you have a phone in your pocket that could do this for you? And why do you right now at this potluck need to know the exact spelling of the word “allergies”? Some other time, ehh, come on, seriously, you’re standing in front of the ambrosia salad and I need some cherries in my belly! Move it! 3. Sometimes I wish you were never born. Well, you know what: I wish I was never born all the time! I wish that I was dead so I wouldn’t have to look at your stupid face and hear your dumb whiny voice. Who says that to a person? I didn’t ask to be born, alright? But! That doesn’t mean I don’t have worth. I’m a good person, and nothing you say can take that away from me.
7. Are you my new dad? Look, I care about you a lot, and I want to be a part of you and your mom’s lives, but I’m not trying to take the place of your dad. I know that you haven’t always had an easy time with him, but he loves you too. No matter what, he’ll always be your dad, I was hoping me and you though…well, maybe we could be friends? Would you like that? I know I would.
8. Kansas City, KS or Kansas City, MO? First of all, it’s basically the same city, and second the answer is always Missouri. Those fuckin’ doinks from Kansas City, Kansas never leave their fuckin’ block, let alone the city. Now will you put your pants back on?
9. Where’s there good BBQ around here? I already told you that I’m allergic to hickory smoke.
10. Is that a dog with his butt shaved and a bullet in his head or is that just your stupid fucking face? That’s really mean and uncalled for, and I feel like you’re being purposely and acutely obtuse. You may find me unattractive—and that’s fine—but there’s no way you’ve actually mistook my face for a violently murdered and desecrated dog carcass. That’s just too much. This is just too much.

Thank you, Michael!
5. If I had a dog that looked like you, I’d shave its butt and then put a bullet in its ugly head. That’s not even how that burn works. I mean, seriously, it makes no sense that way. Why are you spending all this time shaving the dog’s butt if you’re just going to kill it? I mean, what are you some sort of freak who gets his jollies off of shaving dog ass? Also, that’s very violent.

Okay, normally we’d never ever ever tell a non-comedian to go watch an open mic. But you know how there’s this myth that all comedians get on stage and just extemporaneously spew lols? So *turns chair around cool teacher style* that’s not usually true; good acts are refined through lots and lots repetition. BUT if you want to see a world where the myth of fresh-out-thebrain standup happens, Thunderbar forces comics of all levels to test out completely raw material. If you want to see funny people experiment with the limits of taste, or if you are a schadenfreude freak who wants to see loudmouths get vulnerable, or if you want to try your hand at it, here ya go!

FEATURED FILM SERIES
Plympton @BRATTLE
An animated dramedy in pencilled watercolors by veteran director Bill Plympton! A romance, tragicomedy, and drama all in one with strong, beautifully rendered characters and style. For those in need of animation that takes the form a little more seriously. Director in-person 5/1. Screens through 5/4.
BEN RIVERS’ MIDNITE MOVIES: THE WITCHING HOUR, PT. 3 NOW - 5/30, @HFA HCL.HARVARD.EDU/HFA/ British filmmaker Ben Rivers’ latest retrospective of cinematic batshittery continues at the Harvard Film Archive with another month’s worth of deliriously off-kilter genre offerings. In his statement, Rivers explains that all of these films were shown to him as a pre-teen by a local eccentric who ran a video rental service out of the basement of a Methodist church in the tiny village of Somerset. While it’s unlikely this program was condoned by the church itself, it’s easy to see how it could have been a semi-religious experience for the filmmaker: from the feverish Euro-sploitation of THE VISITOR and REQUIEM FOR A VAMPIRE to
the smartass video schlock of NIGHT OF THE COMET and RE-ANIMATOR, these features are enough to warp any impressionable mind. And if Italian goremeister Lucio Fulci’s THE BEYOND isn’t the most theologically sound glimpse of the afterlife, it’s certainly the most badass. Say amen, somebody. Hallelujah! - Oscar Goff
RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD (1985) dir. Dan O’Bannon @COOLIDGE Not really a sequel so much as a meta comedy spun off of Romero’s zombie classics. Directed by maverick screenwriter O’Bannon! Noteworthy for introducing “BRAAAAINS” to the undead canon and for containing the most hysterical punk rockers committed to film. Coolidge @ fter Midnite! Also screens: 5/2.

REUNION WEEKEND 5/22 - 5/25, @BRATTLE WWW.BRATTLEFILM.ORG
Being the academic capital of America, Boston this time of year is chock full of alumni returning to their alma mater to reminisce about old times; asshole teachers, wasted youth, and dated prejudices. Do you really want to go through that again? Instead ditch the college green and head on down to the Brattle Theatre for anniversary screenings from the past century. Classics like THE GREAT DICTATOR and REBECCA from 1940, THE KNACK… AND HOW TO GET IT, FASTER, PUSSYCAT! KILL! KILL!, REPULSION from 1965, along with MIAMI BLUES and AKIRA KUROSA-

PSYCHEDELIC CINEMA (1967 - 69) DIR. KEN BROWN 5/2, 7:30PM, @ICA WWW.ICABOSTON.ORG/PROGRAMS/FILM/ Ah, the sixties. A time of unapologetic experimentation, irreverence and idealism. A time
when 23-year-old Ken Brown grabbed a Super 8mm camera and, after a few film classes at BU, started making colorful, trippy little films to accompany the Velvet Underground, the Grateful Dead, B.B. King, and the Kinks at the legendary South End venue, the Boston Tea Party. It’s all just fun and flowers on the surface, but a closer look reveals pretty amazing superimpositions, vertiginous editing, Python-esque collage animations, and the occasional social commentary that either makes you chuckle at the old days or lament the fact that it’s still relevant today. It’s pretty much impossible to look away, all the better to enjoy it to the live sounds of a Boston “supergroup”: Ken Winokur of Alloy Orchestra, Jonathan LaMaster of Cul de Sac, and Dana Coley of Morphine. - Mariya Nikiforova

WWW.BRATTLEFILM.ORG As the Brattle website states, 1990 was a weird year for movies. One of the lasting pieces of evidence in support of this statement is Clive Barker’s NIGHTBREED, a film that’s cult has continued to grow over the years with several different versions of the film making the rounds, finally culminating in a director’s cut released on blu-ray last year. I’ve always had problems with Clive Barker’s films (I’ve never read his books). The twisted darkness of many of his premises rarely hits the mark on screen. HELLRAISER is the most well known example of the filmic thinness of Barker’s on screen horror, but I feel as if similar issues also affect NIGHTBREED. This is a weird movie. I don’t even really know that I like it, but that doesn’t mean that seeing it projected on 35mm @ 11:30pm on a saturday night @ Brattle is a bad idea (it’s not). This one does not screen often folks.
Lots of weird, well crafted monster types inhabit the film’s underworld called, Midian. Our anti-hero, Boone, is convinced by his psychoanalyst (David Cronenberg(!), stiffly) that he is a serial killer, then dosed with LSD, and finally he is off to hang out with the monster people under the cemetery. He finds family amongst

GUIMBA THE TYRANT (1995) dir. Cheik Oumar Sissoko @ HFA A despot and his son whet their avarice with machinations to coerce two women into wedlock, thereby exiling a husband and fomenting popular dissent in an ancient Mali. Heed this parable in Bambara and Fula with English subtitles. Director in-person!
@COOLIDGE
When you think of Adolf Hitler hilarity usually doesn’t come to mind, but legendary funnyman does just that in this scathing satire about a Jewish barber trading places with a anti-Semitic despot. Obviously, plenty of hijinks ensue.
Mystery abounds when the host of a dinner party turns up dead, with his colorfully named guests the only witnesses—and the only suspects. Though a board gameturned-film may seem a stretch, rolling the dice pays off for this classic.

NIGHT OF THE COMET (1984) dir. Thom Eberhardt @ HFA A group of astrophysicists gone rogue bogarts the fallout shelter when a comet pulverises and zombifies most of the population of some southwestern US city, leaving a pair of unphased Valley sisters to, like, I don’t know, whatever. Starring our lady Mary Woronov.
Tread the fine yet fuzzy line between observing reality and shaping it in this captivating time capsule from Portugal’s mid-’70s Carnation Revolution, in which a long-lived right-wing dictatorship was brought down, but the workers’ paradise failed to materialize.

Celebrate Mother’s Day the Cronenberg way: with brutal murders, gonzo pop psychology, Canadian location shooting, and a horde of terrifying, deformed, parka-clad rage children. Call your mom afterwards and thank her for being nothing like the protagonist of this film. Jerzy Has @HFA
This flick is good midnite movie fare, and worth checking back in on (especially for Cronenberg’s character’s mask), and drinking a beer with, despite its flaws. A NIGHTBREED video game was produced for the Commodore 64. - Dan Shea

Doughboy Donuts & Deli 220 Dorchester Ave South Boston, MA 02127 Haven’t we already done a PYCH on Doughboy? No, we just go there all time. And why do we go so often? Well I’m here to tell you my friends! At first it was because they are open 24 damn hours a day. Then one after another the reasons began to multiply: the folks who work there are sweethearts, the food is top holler, the art up is barnone and did we mention they’re open 24/7? That reason alone contains dozens of mini reasons inside of it. It’s a pretty typical what, where, who trifecta that solidifies Doughboy as a place you could hang. What? Their donuts are hand-made on premises in a wide range of styles, and even if they weren’t amazing (which they are) their donuts and no-frills coffee is just a winning combination for any hour. The where is Southie, a little splotch of Dot. Ave between Broadway and Andrew Sq. You can allllllmost smell the ocean in the air but it’s competing with T exhaust, which brings us to the who. The handsome staff aren’t the only ones keeping this hive humming all night. Actually the majority of patrons (at least when I’m there) are those unsung heroes of society, who come Adric Giles and go at unspeakable hours and do the difficult tasks that make our city run. They’re the garbage men, EMTs, railroad mechanics, cabbies, newspaper men, cops, T and construction workers, city employees, electricians, tow and other truck and livery drivers and then there’s us, the nocturnal artist freaks. Find The Compass here, see disturbing portraits of New England sports stars, vie for the chance to tangle with the fruity pebbles donut. I know you dude/dudette, you could definitely hang here. - Sam Potrykus
