Do You Lack Direction? There’s An Instrument For That We source a resource. Actually, this here monthly rag provides many resources, ones that are still being realized in our 6th year. It was created as an events listing, but it’s more of a complete cultural resource now; not just listing events from music, art, and film communities here, but also reporting on news and issues that affect the culture at large. We brought back horoscopes, we’re debuting missed connections this month... you get the idea. But beyond the content we offer, there is another way we can act as a resource for the independent artist - through volunteerism. Although we talk about it often, especially since getting our 501 (c) (3) status, volunteerism has never really been thought of in the same way (FREE and FOR YOU) as the news and events listings are. Volunteerism is known to be the way the paper is produced and distributed, and we try to be very clear that NO ONE makes money in our organization, but I realize now that as a result of that transparency, volunteerism is more often

considered a BURDEN than an OPPORTUNITY. Yet it’s an incredible resource--a wealth of resources, even-- for artists near and far to take advantage of. Just 3 hidden wonders of volunteerism: Freedom, Experience, and Flexibility. Freedom to do a good thing, without the burden or responsibility of making money, or needing money to do it, is literally invaluable. Speaking of which... Experience. Invaluable experience. The opportunities to volunteer with our organization are nearly inexhaustible and all of which provide experience that is difficult to get anywhere else. Lastly, the flexibility of it all; Unlike an internship or JOB, you can volunteer in any capacity your time allows. Get on board, and get off any time you want, with skills and experiences that will carry you far away from here. Do some good in this perverted world. Take advantage of the myriad opportunities a started-from-scratch, entirely volunteer-run, and multifaceted org like ours can provide. If you lack direction, use the compass to find your way--it could point you towards the path you’ve been looking for. - Sam Potrykus

Featuring artists from every corner of Boston’s musical mosaic, Trefts says “the goal of Boston En Masse is to bring people together to celebrate a few of the many talented artists that often play shows locally and, hopefully, to also introduce people to new bands and friends.” The event features hometown heroes Guerilla Toss, IAN, Mal Devisa, and so many more bands you’ll want to become besties with! --Harry B

THE LONG NOD

Earlier this month the Pru displayed “ART HUB” which one of the city’s hardest-working drummers, TJ Horn, proclaimed a “big middle finger” to working artists. He asked the question: “Which part?” Don’t listen when they talk about Boston becoming a world-class city: it isn’t. At least not right now. It has the potential, but until those doing the heavy lifting to make this city great can afford to live here, the “world-class” designation is out of reach. The cost of living in Boston is too high; most young adults in the city will tell you this. We shouldn’t be surprised by stories of overcrowded apartment buildings when officials are unable or unwilling to provide some sort of viable alternative. While the city has been working with colleges and universities in the area to plan towards the future, with on-campus housing as a key goal, it needs to be stressed that the main housing crises in Boston isn’t about attracting new residents with higher-quality student housing, it’s the affordability of the housing that already exists. Working artists new to the area quickly figure out that the city hasn’t given them many options. Of course, the many artists with day jobs understand that even getting paid a decent wage is a struggle in this city. How ironic that while baby boomers, with the kids out of the house, move into the city to be closer to culture and the arts, they’re pushing out the very people who would be enriching that experience. The Boston Redevelopment Authority has created affordable artist spaces, but gaining access to one is easier said than done. A vetting process “to ensure that only artists occupy artist spaces” necessitates an application with samples of art the interested party has produced, “3 letters of recommendation from artists and/or arts professionals,” and proof that the applicant has had “formal training in the arts,” all of which are submitted to a review by committee. While there are artists out there who do take classes and obtain degrees, there are others who see the entire process as a financial gamble beyond their reach. To require “evidence that the artist has presented his/her work in exhibition, performance, readings or comparable public program” further limits the aspirations of those artists who are not already firmly established within “the industry”. In addition to a lack of affordable housing for working artists, this city has also seen a decline in the number of spaces in which art can be experienced in all its various forms, including theater, music, and the visual arts. Without the general public’s support, the few artists that do have spaces in which to live and work won’t be able to afford rent anymore. It’s not enough anymore to say that neighborhoods need accessible all-ages venues. Now, more than ever, there must be a push to find those able to buy and operate units with the purpose of housing art and artists, or we risk losing some of the most vitally important resources Boston has. Want to find out more and speak your mind on these issues? On November 19, the Boston Institute for Nonprofit Journalism will be hosting a community discussion, “The Crisis in the Creative Professions,” at the Community Church of Boston in Copley. The forum is open to the public.

VIEWFINDERS 6-8pm • @The Griffin Museum (Arlington) A photographer making photos about photography, Meggan Gould’s work is often about vision and how we look at the world, and photography’s place in how we see. In her solo show Viewfinders the subject is the camera itself, specifically the viewfinders in film cameras, and how histories are present in the glass in the form of dust and scratches. Gould says about the work: “Viewfinders are meant to be looked through, what happens if our vision is arrested at these thresholds? Each camera becomes a miniature universe.” http://www.griffinmuseum.org/blog/the-griffinmuseum-at-digital-silver-imaging // Photo courtesy of meggangould.net // On view 10/1512/31 5:30-7:30pm • Reception • Drawing=Thinking @Suffolk University Gallery (Downtown) 6-7pm • artist talk • Futurefarmers, a farm sailed away and came back a garden @Carpenter Center (Harvard) 6-8 pm • CURATOR’S TOUR • Rosa Barba @MIT List (Cambridge)

Kudzanai Chiurai: Iyeza @RISD Museum (Providence) Zimbabwean-born multimedia artist Kudzanai Chiurai’s video work Iyeza will be showing at the RISD museum in Providence starting in late November. Chiurai’s work tackles some of the most pressing and stereotyped issues facing the African continent today, from government corruption to xenophobia and displacement. The 11-minute video Iyeza reinterprets Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper, replacing the painting’s subjects with contemporary African identities. http://risdmuseum.org/art_design/exhibitions/71_ kudzanai_chiurai_iyeza // On view 11.27-5.5.16

The Zine Scene Good Habits by Danielle Freiman was a zine that I happened to pick up at a local shop in Davis Square. I flipped through and landed on a page that included a letter to Oprah. I giggled and was immediately interested. This is a zine put together by Freiman that appears to be a self-care booklet that includes topics such as self-love and actively participating in friendships. Tucked inside this zine is a small recipe card for Freiman’s Grandmother’s Homemade Biscotti recipe. Before that is a letter from Freiman’s Grandmother, Ethel, writing to Oprah, “If you could get this to Pillsbury for their next contest, I could use the money to pay for baking supplies and to share with family and charities.” The innocence and sincerity makes me wish the letter actually reached Oprah's eyes (It didn't). The bottom of the recipe card has a note for the reader to send photographic biscotti results via email to Freiman. The interaction between the reader and zine fosters almost a romantic connection. This was someone so close to the author and I want to be a part of that connection. This biscotti recipe is a step in that direction. This zine is a gentle reminder to take care of oneself. Life can be difficult but the people we surround ourselves with are crucial. This is the perfect zine to read on a day when you feel less than spectacular. My favorite page would be The Radiant Friendships Manifesto which is noted to

be updated and revised as one grows. As someone who has difficulty being kind to herself, this zine was something I needed and I believe others can connect with it too. Good Habits is available at Magpie Gifts in Somerville. — Liz Bolduc

The ICA’s biggest exhibition to date; Leap Before You Look; Black Mountain College opened last month and will be on view through January 2016. The show is about the liberal arts college in North Carolina that was open from 1933-1957, and was occupied by some of the biggest players in the modern and contemporary art world. The show also features current multi-disciplinary art students performing dance and performance pieces created by the Black Mountain College students during their time in the school. The show is a collection of work by these artists while they were undergrads, and is an incredible chance to see the early work of the modern masters.

DREAMCRUSHER ADORE FIRE TALK (2015)

Defining music as “noise” is as absurd as describing a square as a “shape”. Of course it’s a shape– it’s a square! Of course it’s noise– it’s music…right? Perhaps that’s why noise seems to be the catch-all classification for any music that doesn’t quite neatly fit into any other genre, or in some cases, combines elements of noise, like static and bleeps and bloops, with pieces of more universally digestible genres– like pop. Dreamcrusher‘s “Adore” fits the latter description to a T. It’s a moody pop song, or maybe even one of those inexplicably creepy jingles you’d hear at a midsummer carnival, in shadows behind a thick curtain. It’s one part drone and one part morose electronic pop tied together and wrapped generously in static. What the hell are the lyrics he’s trying to sing? What instruments are those, exactly? Who knows? And that’s the point, really. We can only comprehend everything in shadows, because life is not a perfect, crisp pop song. “Adore”, streaming below, comes from Dreamcrusher’s forthcoming (out at the end of this week) Hackers All Of Them Hackers LP via Fire Talk Records. Boston friends– Dreamcrusher will also be playing at Hasslefest 7, in just a couple of weeks, at Brighton Music Hall. -Sarah Moylan

BRITTLE BRAIN BONY FRENCH CATHEDRALS SELF-RELEASED (2014)

ATLANTIC THRILLS BED BUGS ALMOST READY RECORDS (2015) Through neon-streaked smoke billowing along the sidewalk and stale booze-breath conversations, a howling anthem prowls the night. Bed Bugs is the new 7” from Providence’s Atlantic Thrills, a showcase of what’s to come on their soon-to-be released LP on Almost Ready Records, and a follow up to their self-titled debut from 2014. The Ocean State boys inject surf rock with their unique garage sound, peppered with a healthy dose of the Shondells and the prepunk magnetism of The Seeds, topped off with the grime of being tied down to their urban abode. This is the surf sound of a city dweller, and it’s a lot less about hitting the beach in this batch than it is catching up with your sunburned friends after they get back; you show up just in time to miss the sun and ignite the evening. Bed Bugs collects all the momentum you need to make the perfect, searing nightsizzle. It drags you down and up the east coast into the center of a dive bar dance party where you might not know anyone now, but you sure as hell will in time, and by morning no ones gunna remember a thing anyhow. And maybe that kind of forgetting is why there’s a sense of reminiscence and melancholy under all the exuberance. B side “Sugar Sugar” burns sweetly, coming down off the high energy of “Bed Bugs”. Opening with a row of shimmering bells, a crunchy acoustic creates the bed for an astounding vocal that melts over everything with hushed vibrancy. Echoing the electric subtlety of the Velvet Underground, “Sugar Sugar” is a testament to how far Atlantic Thrills can go — from garage psych mayhem to a willowy ballad soaked in ethereal splendor. -Jon Rizzo

LA MISMA

TAXIDERMISTS

KANIZADI

HONESTY BOX

LA VIDA ES UN MUS DISCOS (2015)

SELF-RELEASED (2015)

The NYC punk scene is always thriving, but in the last few years, the city's music, as exemplified by labels like Katorga Works and Toxic State, has been in a real renaissance. The DIY spaces of Brooklyn are producing top-notch examples of everything from terse, violent classic hardcore to noisy mutant slop to goth/industrial-influenced but no less raging deathpunk. Now, releasing their debut full-length Kanizadi after a few demos and EPs, we can add to this growing list of coexisting micro-genres... whatever La Misma is! This four-piece stands apart from a lot of their contemporaries. The anthemic guitar leads, rumbling, distorted bass, and rousing, pogo-friendly drumming bring to mind more of a UK82 sound, with tempo changes, starts and stops, and a general looseness that give you the sense that everything could go off the rails at any given second. But what really sets them apart are the high-energy vocals (sung in Portuguese) of Nay Vieira-Rosario, one of many NYC underground luminaries with roots in Boston. The caffeinated, manic energy of Kanizadi is a welcome counterpoint to the more aggressive, masculine energy lots of hardcore bands exude. Don't get me wrong, it's aggressive. It's still a hardcore punk record, with nine tracks blasting by in just over 20 minutes, but it's an emotive and honest anger. No posturing here, just pure release. You might not be able to understand what Nay's saying, but you'll be able to understand what she's feeling, and that's powerful enough to transcend language barriers. -John Von Bittrich

CORE RAP WITH KEELEY CORMAC Are you lost? Melancholy? Up to the brim with feelings? Then Brittle Brian, AKA Victoria Rose’s September 2014 release, Bony French Cathedrals, is sure to be a hit with your weakened heart. Laying down some experimental folk, straight from a tape deck in a faraway bedroom, Rose is the ingénue that got away. Tackling things that pull at the heartstrings, (ex. missed connections, low self-esteem, budding femininity, and the Internet), Cathedrals is a beautiful, haunting confessional. “Bad Liar” is definitely the track to beat on this album. Like stolen thoughts from a private diary, Rose laments on a complicated love with lyrics like: “I’m a bad liar/I’m too afraid to look at you/I know that you have noticed/That I am made of computer screens/And dirty sidewalk cum,” and “I don’t why you take me out/I’m never any fun/I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry…” Maybe it’s her, maybe it’s the lover in question, maybe it’s both of them. It’s a song that’s heavy, young, and dying. Other gems on the album are “The Internet,” a short ethereal hum of clicking keys and gospel-like chants, (it’s funny/sad and you know it), “Dust,” a guitar whisper of desperation, and “Jamie and Charlie (Goose Version),” which brings listeners into a true pastoral state of mind. Plus geese, and that’s cool. Brittle Brian’s latest album Verisune, along with this one, can be purchased via her Bandcamp page. - Sarah Samways

A notable absence was felt in Boston music last December when BUFU bad boys, Free Pizza, moved south to Miami before their rock pilgrimage to Berlin, Germany. But now these friendly n'fun punks are back touring the U.S. and playing our very own Hassle Fest 7!! Before they come back to share their happy, positive, and easily applicable art-punk, they've talked to us about their new member, what's up next, and spreading the sass. Boston Hassle: First off, how has it been in Berlin? Have you been able to spread the shred? Free Pizza: Our time in Berlin was an incredible period of personal growth and fun times. We played a handful of sick shows and made a lot of new friends. We actually focused more on spreading the sass. We're leaving the shred for Ben to spread when he makes it to Europe. BH: What is the art/music scene in Berlin like? FP: It was good. Seriously there is a strong electronic / club scene there, lots of people from that community were very open to us. Also we met Canadians and New Zealanders (kiwis) and Australians. Our first show in Berlin was at this huge apartment building that was all artist studios, it was like a giant 8 story building version of the Whitehaus. It wad called the Green House. BH: Is there are new member of Free Pizza? FP: No. JK. Yea! Rory from Designer (R.I.P) also plays in a sassy band called The Christ 4. Rory is a Gemini, just like our previous drummer, bad boi Nick Rasmussen. Nick joined our sister band, Ben Katzman's degreaser, another Aries-Gemini-Gemini power trio. Rory is a sassy little boy he wears a diaper jk. BH: Is there anything in particular you miss about Boston?

FP: A list of Boston things we miss in no particular order: 1. Same Old Place 2. Arboretum 3. Countless amazing inspiring bands + shows 4. Blizzards 5. Boomerangs 6. Twin Donuts 7. Twin Donuts 8. All our friends 9. T. Charlie Card. 10. All the parks. 11. Chilling on the porch. 12. (see lyrics to Boston, MA) BH: Where would you say most of the inspiration from Free Pizza’s music comes from? FP: Joy, kissing, reflection/introspection, sadness, good pants, QTs (romance), Spongebob, anxiety, the road, high fives, metronome, baby sinclair, novelty. BH: What are you most excited about for Free Pizza’s future post-Berlin? FP: Recording, touring, making more friends + meeting new crushes! BH: Can a Free Pizza release be expected in the near future? FP: Expect a 12" of something new recorded in Berlin, out on BUFU Records, Spring 2016

CATCH FREE PIZZA'S RETURN TO BOSTON AT HASSLE FEST 7 ON NOVEMBER 5TH @ CAMBRIDGE ELKS LODGE!

I’m a sucker for fluctuations in volume. Loudquiet-loud-quiet-loud: I am there. But most bands bring little nuance or invention to this effect: usually just some fingerpicking and soft crooning juxtaposed against a distortion pedal and screaming. Then there are Taxidermists. Honesty Box, the latest release by the Western Mass band, is a massive fit of downtuned guitars, sporadic drumming, and jacked-up song structure. Their music reminds me of Sonic Youth: cacophonous weirdness that somehow manages to be catchy. Except Sonic Youth used four people to create all that noise, and the Taxidermists pull it off with just two. (The band members are Salvadore McNamara and Cooper B Handy. The album was released on Telegraph Harp.) Honesty Box opens with a perfect introduction. “Be 1” is an explosive combination of plucky cleans and crumbling dirties. Static buzz layers over sporadic drumming and soft, spoken vocals. An album that could easily be construed as pure noise rock is shot through with surprisingly catchy guitar riffs. The bright, punchy sliding at the start of “Tight Rope” wouldn’t be out of place at a beach party. But it’s the wild instability, the fluid fluctuations between mind-melting volume and intimate sing-song, that really pleasure my ears. Listening to the closing track, “Rel Young,” I almost thought my speaker had cut out. And Taxidermists demonstrate some genuine classic rock guitar chops here. The solo on “Big Enough for The Truth” is nothing short of rad, as I’m sure that Wayne and Garth would agree. With the disorienting change-ups of volume and intensity, the vocals remain largely mellow. That’s another similarity with Sonic Youth, although I’d argue these guys do it better than Thurston Moore. Taxidermists play madly with traditional song structure, turning every song into an experiment. One second you’re being pummeled by noise, the next you want to dance. This is a band named for people who stuff dead things. But in its unpredictability and audacity, their music is very much alive. -Emma Buchanan

WOLF EYES ENEMY LADDER B/W DULL MURDER TWO THIRD MAN RECORDS (2015) I debated writing “trip metal” two hundred times over instead of an actual write-up here, but opted against it. Instead: Hailing from Ann Arbor, Michigan, WOLF EYES has been assaulting our ears for nineteen years with their industrial/noise throughout their various lineups and phases. One of Wolf Eyes’ greatest strengths, shared by fellow long-running noise ensemble SISSY SPACEK, has been their ability to shift and evolve over the years, embracing their own distinct trajectories instead of popular trends. The upcoming I Am A Problem: Mind In Pieces LP, to be released on JACK WHITE’S Third Man Records on October 30th, is the latest phase of the band. The most trip metal release yet, and finally a distillation of their phenomenal 2015 tour. The music is hard to pigeonhole but is an immersive, and deceptively simple, blend of reverbed vocals, churning guitar, noise bleets, and a drum machine blasting away an almost tribal rhythm. These elements combine to form something resembling the bastard offspring of SAVAGE REPUBLIC and NEU!. “Enemy Ladder” comes across as a sort of mosh-metal post-industrial BIG BLACK wet dream. A perfect soundtrack for irradiated strip malls and 7-11 nachos. Long live Trip Metal. -Chris Defalco

PATRIC KM

AL ONEY

Kick off the month with the always excellent Ranger Zone! Host Aimee Rose Ranger has curated quite the lineup: Jere Pilapil, Wes Hazard, Andy Ostroff, Pat Regan, Pamela Ross, and Xander Blackwell, world famous ghost hunter!

at The Midway, Jamaica Plain

Hi customers, Soooo we forgot to put the tags on a few of our tea varieties! Whoops heh well here are the replacements could you reuse them pls we can’t afford to fix the mistake I’m on fire. Very sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your understanding. Best regards, Charlene Chumbum

O WOW Angela Sawyer and Gabe Stoddard have moved their open mic to the Midway. Come show your goofs and/or your music. You have 5 minutes of talking or 2 songs of musicing. Or you can watch others do that. That would be okay.

Sam Ike and Laura Clark are two completely different people with completely different perspectives on every single thing. Their show is a brutally honest look at pop culture, love, society and some weird stuff. Don't sleep on this.

The Dope Show

(Boston Comedy Festival Edition)

Street Meat, A Variety Show

SATURDAY 11/7 AT 9PM

at Charlie’s Kitchen, Harvard Square • $5 • 21+

We are looking forward to this. We love Guitler Raphael and Bethany Van Delft. They corral some standups and other funny weirdos for a one-of-a-kind variety show where anything can happen. Catch music from Manor, standup from Dana Cairns, Nick Chambers, Langston Kerman, Peter Martin, Dave McDonough, Casey Salengo, and Blair Socci. Sarah Cronin, Andrew Durso, Ethan Marsh, Shaun Connolly, and Quentin James will do hilarious who-knows-what.

MONDAY 11/2 AT 8PM

Music and comedy: UNITE. Hosts Guitler Raphael and Riley Knispel present to you some tunes (c/o Gravel, Joey Unis, and Pocket Tanya) and some laughs (c/o Nick Chambers, Will Smalley, Ethan Marsh, Mark Gallagher, and more.)

Anderson Comedy's weekly showcase has some real treats for you this month. Start writing your Congressperson now: on the 6th, the despicable Neil Hamburger soils the art of comedy before your eyes. Nasty. On the 13th, standup legend and Simpsons writer Dana Gould returns to the Gas as part of the Boston Comedy Festival (BCF runs from 11/6-14 btw). Anyway don't miss either of these.

Scandinavians approach their seasons of horrific cold with a sense of "hygge,” a Danish word that roughly translates to “coziness.” Good company, comfort, and warm beverages are paramount. Who cares about

SATURDAY 11/7 AT 11:30PM ImprovBoston, Central Square • $5

See Boston’s best as they attempt new bits that are way, way out of their comfort zone. From sketch to standup, character work to karate, and everything in between.

The BFF Show

TUESDAY 11/10 AT 8PM Laugh Boston

Tawanda Gona’s besties headed to LA and he needs replacements. This funny dude is auditioning comedians in the hopes of filling those Sam Jay and Mike Mulloy-sized holes in his heart. Competing are John Baglio, Zardon Richardson, Chanel Ali, Jordan Handren-Seavey, and Nick Lavallee. You should go because it will be really good, but if that doesn't convince you, maybe at least out of pity? It's kinda sad.

Boston Comedy Chicks

SATURDAY 11/14 AT 8PM Doyle’s, JP • $10

SUNDAY 11/15 AT 8PM

Laugh Boston, Seaport District • $15

Boston's only all-female showcase is always a blast. On the 14th, you can check out local heavy-hitters at Doyle's in JP. Follow that up the next night with some amazing up-and-coming out-of-towners at Laugh: Anna Phillips, Regina DiCicco, Shelly Colman, Samantha Ruddy, and Katie Hannigan.

The Kerfuffle

THURSDAY 11/19 AT 9PM ImprovBoston, Central Square

Hosts Jackie Arko and Hannah Foell have no idea what will happen from Kerfuffle to Kerfuffle; they have only the titles of each performer's act prior to the show. But what always happens tends to the absurd, raw, tender. This utterly original showcase packs the theater each month for excellent reason. Your 400 words-ish brain blobs, your black & white drawings, your dumb Photoshops, games, puzzles: WE'LL TAKE A LOOK AT LEAST? Deadline for Dec. issue = 11/15 but we do take things on a rolling basis. them though. To help your heart during the Boston cold, we here at The Tardy Eagle Cold Weather Council have some helpful messages below that you can cut out and look at. Suck it, Denmark!

THE COOLIDGE AFTER MIDNITE HONORS LLOYD KAUFMAN 11/06–11/28 @COOLIDGE

http://www.Coolidge.org/Events/Coolidge-After-MidniteHonors-Lloyd-Kaufman

For over a decade, the Coolidge Corner Theatre has bestowed their annual Coolidge Award upon a wide variety of cinematic luminaries, from Meryl Streep and Jonathan Demme to cinematographer Vittorio Storaro and editor Thelma Schoonmaker. But what about the oddballs, the cultish weirdos lurking in the fringes? This year, the Coolidge bestows the very first Coolidge After Midnite award to Lloyd Kaufman, the bowtied, hyperactive mouthpiece of the legendarily schlocky Troma Entertainment. The choice is fitting: with its gross-out humor and consistently inspired titles, Troma has served as a gateway for generations of budding cinepunks, and no one embodies that spirit like the studio’s president and lead director. Throughout the month of November, the Coolidge will hold midnight screenings of such joyously profane Tromasterpieces as TROMEO AND JULIET, CLASS OF NUKE ‘EM HIGH, and POULTRYGEIST, plus the all-time classic TOXIC AVENGER, at which screening Lloyd will graciously (?) accept his honor. - Oscar Goff

BLOOD FREAK (1972) dir. Brad F. Grinter & Steve Hawkes It’s Thanksgiving evening. Your more conservative kinfolk are lulled into their psychosomatic tryptophan comas, leaving you and your interesting relations to program the entertainment. But Eli Roth still hasn’t gotten around to making THANKSGIVING, your parents’ wi-fi can’t handle the Shout Factory MST3K Turkey Day marathon, and THANKSKILLING is a little too ironic-Netflix-queueselection. So what to watch?

12 THE TIN DRUM (1979) dir. Volker Schlondorff @ GOETHE // Günter Grass’s wildly imagistic reckoning with

the catastrophe of Nazism is also, in this adaptation, an iconic classic of New German Cinema.

BOUND FOR THE FIELDS, THE MOUNTAINS, AND THE SEACOAST

(1986) dir. Nobuhiko Ôbayashi // 11/15 @HFA– Director in person! http://HCL.Harvard.edu/ HFA/Films/2015SepNov/ Obayashi.html While much has been written about Nobuhiko Ôbayashi’s manically warped HAUSU (1977) since it’s US release by Janus Films more than thirty years after it’s original release, Ôbayashi remains an incredibly obscure filmmaker outside of his native Japan. Yet, his significance as a filmmaker there is irrefutable. Beginning in the 50s and 60s, Ôbayashi was one the pioneering experimental filmmakers working in the country, and established a longstanding relationship with the Art Theater Guild – a group dedicated to the production and distribution of radical and avant-garde cinema and associated with other such luminaries as Toshio Matsumoto, Susumu Hani, and Shūji Terayama. While Ôbayashi went on to make many commercially successful features later in his career (and is still an active filmmaker), he never abandoned his anarchic style or surrealist leanings. In simple terms, BOUND FOR THE FIELDS... is a rare chance to see more work from the legendary filmmaker and perhaps get some perspective on what kind of mind could produce such a film as HAUSU.

Unsurprisingly, BLOOD FREAK is not on any major streaming service, but you can find the awesome Something Weird DVD release pretty cheap on Amazon, which also includes a bevy of short subjects tangentially related to drugs, Jesus, and turkeys. - Oscar Goff

02 ROMEO IS BLEEDING (2015) dir. Jason Zeldes @BRATTLE // Donté Clark writes poetry while the world around him falls to shit. Director Jason Zeldes documents a DIY Shakespeare production in Richmond, CA, where the courage of community organizing takes hold thanks to the efforts of Clark and Co. Director in person! 03 THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS (1942) dir. Orson Welles @BRATTLE // Come see the second feature of boy genius Orson Welles about a super rich turn of the century Midwestern family caught up in social changes due to the advent of the automobile. Screening will be followed by an analytical discussion. Elements of Cinema – Free screening! 06 EADWEARD MUYBRIDGE, ZOOPRAXOGRAPHER (1975) dir. Thom Andersen @HFA // A key figure in contemporary documentary filmmaking discusses the work that established his career, a fascinating, obsessive study of a fascinating, obsessive man, who may or may not have invented cinema but indisputably killed his wife. Part of an ongoing retrospective. Director in person! 09 MARTIN (1977) dir. George Romero @HFA // If you thought horror maestro George Romero was only competent at the zombie genre, you’d be dead (wink, wink) wrong. A young man living in a depressed Pittsburgh suburb claims to be an 84 year old vampire. But is he? 13 FRIDAY THE 13TH DOUBLE FEATURE (1980/1986) dir. Sean Cunningham/Tom McLoughlin @ROCKYWOODS // Ch Ch Ch Ch, Ha Ha Ha. Get the ultimate Friday the 13th experience by watching two of the films from the iconic series back to back in an actual campground. Wandering alone and having premarital sex are not advised. Outdoor screening – Sponsored by Coolidge! 14 THE FORBIDDEN ROOM (2015) dir. Guy Maddin @HFA // Come on, who can resist entering a forbidden room? Strictly smug survivor types, I surmise. Shrug off their all-too-reasonable caveats and follow the cool kids lining up to check out living legend Guy Maddin’s brand new extravaheadfuck of irony-laden neo-surrealism. Director in person! 15 PROJECTIONS OF AMERICA (2015) dir. Peter Miller @MFA // The “Greatest Generation” produced documentarians as well as foot soldiers, you know. Many were recruited during WWII to deploy our ultimate weapon--cinema!--in an effort to reassure newly liberated populations of the spotless character and noble intentions of the American people. Director in person! 16 HOUSE (1977) dir. Nobuhiko Obayashi @HFA // A summer trip to an aunt’s house goes awry for a girl named Gorgeous and her six friends when strange things begin to occur -- namely, random household items attacking. Ridiculous, horrifying, and full of cheesy effects. Director in person! 18 FADE TO WINTER (2015) @BRATTLE // Face it, winter rules, and if you don’t agree, get ye to Florida already! This film follows a bunch of skiers who love winter so much the followed it around the world, trekking and shredding from Japan to New England. 19 RUSHMORE (1998) dir. Wes Anderson @COOLIDGE // Wes Anderson and a few of his regulars tell the story of a love triangle unfolding at an elite private school. Quirkiness abounds (this is Anderson, of course!), but so do real emotions and meaning. 19 GRRL HAUS CINEMA @BRATTLE // Join Grrl Haus for another showcase of short films from notable local and national female filmmakers, from narrative to documentary to experimental-- and beyond! Filmmakers include Anastasia Cazabon, Caitlin Duennebier, Cara Kuball, and more, plus musical performance by Mini Dresses!

How about a turkey-themed, anti-drug, pro-Christian, ‘70s splatter film? Shot in the wilds of Florida, BLOOD FREAK (1972) is a staggeringly weird grindhouse oddity, and perfect counterprogramming to the Macy’s parade. Herschell, a wayward Christian biker, takes refuge at the home of a nice, pious girl (literally named “Angel”). However, Angel’s sinful sister Ann takes a shine to Herschell, and seduces him with the dread marijuana! Instantly addicted, Herschell takes a job at the sisters’ father’s turkey farm, where he volunteers to test a new turkey growth hormone (?), which, naturally, turns him into a were-turkey (!) with a thirst for junkie blood (!?!). The ensuing rampage would be upsettingly violent if it weren’t so incompetently staged, and also performed by a man in a papier mache turkey mask. Oh, and did I mention the onscreen, chain-smoking narrator? Priceless.

02 VALERIE AND HER WEEK OF WONDERS (1970) dir. Jaromil Jires @HFA // As magical as its eponymous protagonist’s evil priestfighting earrings, Valerie is the strangest, most exquisite jewel in the crown of the Czech New Wave, a counterculptural parable crossing fairy tale medievalism with psychedelic feminism. What it wants from you is sweet.

THE BOSTON JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL 11/04–11/06@ASSORTED VENUES http://www.BJFF.org

It’s tempting, in composing an opening for this unpaid ad, to invoke, by way of instant context, the outbreak of intra-Semitic bloodshed in Israel in recent weeks, but to do so would be regrettably reductive, not to mention offpoint. For one thing, the five films featured in this latest installment of the MFA’s long-running annual showcase-which takes place, coincidentally or not, just after the museum’s Palestine-focused fest--cover plenty of extra-Israeli ground. France, Iraq, Australia, the United States, Ethiopia--they or their representatives all put in appearances in a series of films, docs and features both, engaged with questions of identity, history, persecution and preservation. -Matthew Martens

21 THE TOXIC AVENGER (1984) dir. Lloyd Kaufman & Michael Herz @COOLIDGE // The flagship outing from Troma Entertainment is every bit as lovably tasteless as you remember from your local video store, with all of its head crushing, deliberately cheesy acting, and glorious New Jersey location shooting. Stand with the Monster Hero! Kaufman in person! (See featured article) 23 THE CONVERSATION (1974) dir. Francis Ford Coppola @ COOLIDGE // A surveillance expert is hired to track a young couple – but the tables turn when he begins to suspect that he is being surveyed himself. Soon, he is driven into paranoia and fear for the safety of the couple. 23 GREASER’S PALACE (1972) dir. Robert Downey Sr. @HFA // The elder Downey tells the story of Jesus Christ as it was truly meant to be told: as a raunchy, vaudevillian, existentialist Western starring Allan Arbus, Herve Villechaize, and a cigar-chomping Holy Ghost. Somehow, it’s even weirder than it sounds. 30 THE CONFORMIST (1970) dir. Bernardo Bertolucci @ COOLIDGE // A troubled man’s quest for normality drives him into the service of Fascism in Mussolini’s Italy. He treads a dangerous and deceitful path as an agent of the stecret police, though who he is really fooling may just be himself. More new releases not available at time of printing.
