Counting Freedoms in a Month of Thanks This is the Compass. It’s a newspaper. A free newspaper. And ya know what else? It’s a buncha PEOPLE too! A bona-fide org-an-iz-ation. Mhmm. Yup. Very funny, depending on your outlook. Irrespective of your outlook (no offense, just wait) the one unflinching fact that makes this YOUR Compass is that without fail, this paper will always get into your hands for FREE. And I’m not just talking about the pop definition of “free” as in “no money,” like where you get a gift card for opening a bank account. Oh no, friends. That ain’t free at all. And actually a whole lotta resources (one being money, others being time, energy, and their circumstantial offshoots--mental/emotional stability, good nights’ sleeps, and general feelings of self-actualization) change hands across this hive of individuals hunched over computers and telephones and get launched into the ether before this little paper is finally pressed upon our minor world every and each month. This paper is free because you are free. I hope both stay that way forever.
THANK YOU to everyone who makes this pulpy slice of tree happen, who picks it up or drops it off, reads it or uses it to start a grill. Thank you to all involved in the organizational conjuring arm that is THE HASSLE, and to every radical soul doomed to magnetically spawn in the infinite push that is booking shows in New England; organizing tours, writing songs, making records, and birthing colors of every tint and shade onto the ever-bleakening landscape. You know who you are. Thank you for making it happen. Finally, HASSLE FEST 6. In and of itself HF6 is a gigantic thank-you as much as a you’re-welcome. To Boston, to New England, to the many volunteers donating their time and love, to everyone who shared that damn Indiegogo link, to every label and band involved, and to everyone who fits anywhere in the second paragraph. This round begetting itself ever more rounds-upon-rounds of gratitude, before we get stuck in an infinite thanksgiving feedback loop I better say goodbye. Look out for HF6 and come say hi. See ya out there, November! - Zach Peckham

The following (and more beyond them, who will be named next month) literally put it all out there. They donated records and gear to us here, to release onto you for FREE ya hear? That’s right, get to Hassle Fest EARLY for an opportunity to grab swag from the bag of NNA, OSR Tapes, Feeding Tube, Northern Spy, Sophomore Lounge, Bufu, Mexican Summer, Dull Tools, Thrill Jockey, Ride The Snake, K Recs, Goner, Underwater Peoples, Crash Symbols, Blood Oath Slumber Party, Faux Pas, Hidden Temple, Not Not Fun, Primordial Sounds, Ride The Snake, Rotted Tooth, Soundway, YLDMIER and more! Abroad Guerilla Toss Studies The Holy Tossers are moving hand over fist, grass over piss-kettle, and blond over bong as they fly hiiigh over the pond to sow their wild oats all about the glorified peninsula that is EUROPE. While you’re unlikely to catch any of their sets in Spain, Portugal, Germany, France, the UK or Czech Republic, they’ve initiated some preparatory measures you may dig on: a new LP “Smack the Brick” is out on Feeding Tube, Gay Disco gets the NNA analog treatment, and some fine wares that have been tied & dyed in every size. Bless ‘em with a “bon voyage” @HASSLE FEST (11/7). - Anthony Richards

Follow the Yellow Brick Road to STORYCLUB BOSTON Once you know how to look at it, a painting or a shoe or even a bench has a story to tell you. My favorite thing just lately is a show called Storyclub Boston. Simple enough, it’s a show for telling stories. Twice a month KEN GREEN hosts local folks, some of whom have been on stage a lot & some who haven’t. There are stories of all kinds, short & long. A good one might make you snicker or just feel warm all over. One show is @Improv Boston (40 Prospect St., Central Square) at the beginning of the month on a Thursday & one is @Milky Way Lounge (284 Amory St., Jamaica Plain) at the end of the month on a Monday. They’re both from 6:30 PM - 8:00. There’s even an open mic, so you can show up & tell a story of your own. There are themes & little videos & all sorts of extras. So, what’s your story? Dates can be found at www.storyclubboston.com anytime, and there are always flyers at Weirdo too. - Angela Sawyer

Death of Death By Audio: Brooklyn DIY Institution Says Peace! Brooklyn’s Death By Audio, a cultural bastion of the NYC, Northeast and entire USA is closing its doors. Originally home to the audio effects company of the same name, DBA started throwing music and art shows in 2007 and maintaining one of the best underground show situations in the city. It’s hallowed murals, hand-programmed video game consoles, smoky concerts and midsummer shows sansAC will not be forgotten! From the dust of great DIY venues come more great DIY venues, though it is hard to accept this impermanence comes with our territory. Death By Audio isn’t going quietly and has some incredible lineups in store to close out its legendary run, like on November 5th: Black Pus, Lair, Bugs & Rats and Pampers! - Matt Robidoux

ONGOING ART LISTINGS
Boston cultural denizen, MONA MARUYAMA could be defined in so many ways...artist, photographer, illustrator, musician, designer, badass...but who wants to be defined by titles?? Besides, she’s got some selfies to help with that. This lady plays by her own rules and that’s just how we like it here at the Hassle. Her work as a show photographer and flyer artist help to visually define the Boston music scene and document part of what’s happening right now. These two tasks she regularly takes on are so vital, and yet possibly underappreciated as art forms. As a photographer, she consistently captures the raw energy from the band/crowd/space, all within a single photo. While an exceptional eye for composition and perspective aren’t hurting her, it’s her experience as a musician that’s got her so in tune with where to shoot and when. At the same time, her flyers help to get that crowd to go to that space & listen to that band a & create all that energy that needs capturing. Mind melt. Making a good flyer is more than meets the eye. This is communicating a lot of information in a clear and attractive way so that it stands out on a wall of a hundred other flyers trying to do exactly the same thing, while depicting the spirit of the event itself. Tuff stuff. Unless you’ve got an arsenal of artistic skills to help. It’s Mona’s fearless pursuit of different endeavors that may be the secret to the sauce here. Dare we say, by challenging herself and trying various mediums, Mona gets better at each? That sounds about right, and there’s no end in sight as she continues to explore her own boundaries (or lack thereof). To think of all that’s to come from this freshly minted 21 year-old San Diegan living in Jamaica Plain. Lucky us that she’s here now. www.MonaMaruyama.com - CEEK

After four years in the making, the ETHELBERT COOPER GALLERY OF AFRICAN AND AFRICAN AMERICAN ART opened its doors late last month in the heart of Harvard Square. Designed by world-renowned Ghanaian-British architect DAVID ADJAYE, the gallery sits behind a remarkable façade of vertical wooden planks, inspired by the forests of Ghana, in a repurposed commercial space tucked behind Peet’s Coffee. An extension of Harvard’s HUTCHINS CENTER FOR AFRICAN & AFRICAN-AMERICAN RESEARCH, the Cooper Gallery is the first Harvard gallery dedicated entirely to African and African American art. The inaugural exhibition, LUMINÓS/C/ITY. ORDINARY JOY: FROM THE PIGOZZI CONTEMPORARY AFRICAN ART COLLECTION, is co-curated by Adjaye and MARIAN IBRAHIM-LENHARDT, founder and curator of Seattle’s M.I.A. Gallery, and features the work of 21 artists from across the globe selected from the extensive Pigozzi Collection of Contemporary African Art, some of which have never been publicly seen. Be on the lookout for artist talks, lectures, and workshops as this new space unfolds and be sure to catch this ground-breaking show before it comes down on January 8, 2015! - Sydney Kinchen

Sean Nicholas Savage Bermuda Waterfall Arbutus Records (2014)
The latest album from prolific Canadian artist SEAN NICHOLAS SAVAGE, is a collection of ambient pop ballads with a clear taste for the 80’s. The tracks are smooth and nostalgic, full of longing and electric keyboards. BERMUDA WATERFALL begins with haunting vocal melodies layered over island-ready percussion. After a brief instrumental intro, the Institute aptly named song “Naturally” carries on the easy, rhythmic sound. Mellow and tender, the lead single sets the tone for the rest of the album. Giddy Boys 7” Prominent, clear vocals steer the lyrically strong “Heartless” farther from the beach. Accentuated drumbeats pave the way for a subtly harsher take on romance, as SAVAGE CreaturoS reflects on the effects of his “obsessive jungle pride.” Katorga Works (2014) The album dips a little further into despair with the song “Empire”. The Haley House was founded in 1966 in Boston’s South End as a soup kitchen with free lodging for the local homeless community. Over the decades their non-profit work has expanded to include affordable housing, organic farming, a food pantry, cooking classes and job training, and the Haley House Bakery & Café at 12 Dade Street in Roxbury’s Dudley Square. At the Café Bostonians enjoy delicious fresh food with ingredients from nearby farms. Meals are prepared by chefs from the Transitional Employment Program (TEP) to support those formerly incarcerated with their societal reintegration. The atmosphere is relaxed and inviting, with special pay-as-you-will meals, rotating exhibitions by local visual artists, lectures organized in partnership with Discover Roxbury on local history and culture, and Nina LaNegra’s jubilant and engaging Thursday night “Art is Life Itself!” music, poetry, open mic and discussion series. Every November since 1996, to finance their grassroots efforts addressing our society’s most pressing problems, the Haley House holds an Annual Thanksgiving Pie Drive. TEP trainees bake the pies from scratch in the Café kitchen. This year seven varieties are available including two gluten-free options, with proceeds benefiting TEP. Some patrons buy one or two for their Thanksgiving table while others purchase dozens and donate them to the food pantry. Still others volunteer to be Pie Captains, spearheading company-wide bulk pie purchases at their places of work. This year’s Pie Drive goal is 1,500 pies. Do your family, community and tummy a favor by driving some pie home, would you? Neil Horsky • horskyprojects.com

Since we (the unpaid writer slaves of the Compass) broke (always) up the days we write, I consider myself lucky to get the first day of the month. But don’t take it for granted, it’s when shit starts breaking down that you wish you’d at least humored a multivitamin or passed over a crunch wrap or two of any flavor. Turkeys are expensive and have baboon butts for a head. Ew! Pigeons are free and pre-seasoned with the sumptuous flavor of urban decay. This year, leave turkey off the menu and the pidgeON!

This was a big one. Ever since the scene in Pretty in Pink where Spades plays the ur-80s asshole Steff and he is breaking up weed on his dad’s fancy desk I’ve thought that this was my dude. Even though now he is kind of weird and lumpy shaped and on a show whose subway station ads gross me out, he still looked cool as hell siting on a bench smoking a Marlboro Light. (Quick digression: what’s up with celebs and Marby Lights? It seems like every time I see a famous smoking it is always the most garbage of all major cigarettes. Is it easier on their voices? Do they think that they look cool? Have they not heard that they are the cigarettes of trash people?) Somehow—more than any other of his contemporaries—he’s made it through his career without even being terrible or notoriously on drugs or notoriously having sex with an underage girl on video. AND THIS WAS THE DUDE WHO ONLY PLAYED DRUG DEALERS AND JERKS! SPADES IS THE BEST!
This old dude came into the bar and ordered a lot of tequila shots. Not like five, like A LOT. I commented to my co-worker, “Hey, look at Mr. Fake Steve Austin drinking all the tequila over there.” (I’m Mr. Funny Joke at work.) Imagine my surprise when I later learned it WAS Stone Cold Steve Austin! I was moderately embarrassed!

The Place I Work, Williamsburg
Just got a new place and my old lady landlord lives upstairs and makes super weird ralphing noises every night at like 4 a.m. Bro, she smells so fucked up! Like, she speaks some language I never even heard of and said she met a pharaoh and shit. She must be like 3,000. I don’t want to move out til next month though, because she has this superhot redhead granddaughter coming over to visit every night. I always see that girl go up there and keep thinking I’ll catch her on her way back downstairs and I so gotta tap that. Dude, that girl’s booty gets more beautiful every time I see it, but somehow I always fall asleep or something and don’t see her come out even though there’s only one staircase. Also this stupid house has beetles everywhere and there is fucking red velvet wallpaper with little gold curly shapes and it is so fucking ugly it looks like it’s moving when you’re not looking at it. Do you think I should like, make my mom make a lasagna and take it upstairs to get in good with the girl?
RYAN: She knows something you don’t know. That’s obvious. You’re too busy watching CNN and freaking out about Ebola or worrying about ISIS that you don’t know where a single good source of knowledge is anymore. Find out about this pharaoh and let her lead you to a path of unseen enlightenment.

“STONE COLD” STEVE AUSTIN
RYAN: Wait, sewing needles? That’s your mark of a serial killer? Maybe you could just calm down and encourage him to pursue textile arts? I can’t tell you how many times I get a hole right in my pants and wish I had taken up sewing. It would save me a lot of aggravation and I imagine, if I were the murderin’ type, a lot of dead bodies.
KEIRA: No. You can’t talk about people this way. Neither of these women care what you think of them. Go home and make your Mom some lasagna.

11/14—11/23, @HFA To the past couple of generations, Angela Lansbury will forever be known as Jessica Fletcher, the kindly, ingenious mystery writer she played for twelve years on MURDER SHE WROTE. Yet this perception does little
justice to a remarkable six-decade career. On film, she has appeared in classics ranging from GASLIGHT to THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD, and played one of cinema’s great villains in THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE. This month, the Harvard Film Archive will present some of the actress’ best, culminating in a rare appearance by Lansbury herself, introducing one of her favorite roles in John Frankenheimer’s ALL FALL DOWN! - Oscar Goff

THE BEYOND (1983) DIR. LUCIO FULCI 11/21 & 11/22, 11:59PM, $10.25, @COOLIDGE Very excited to see that The Coolidge is screening Lucio Fulci’s THE BEYOND as part of their AFTER MIDNITE (AKA midnight movie) series. Singularly important to this writer is Fulci’s Louisiana set, ghostly gore film… the first midnight movie I ever attended! Anchor Bay (they were so good) had just released the film on DVD/ VHS and I’d bought the special edition that came in a tin box with a postcard of the film’s poster (and little more). Then one day, I was in Pipeline Records (Matt (Fat) Day’s shop, RIP) in Harvard Sq., and there next to a Biggie Smalls 12” was the film’s poster. It was screening at The Coolidge. At 17, sure, I knew about midnight movies. Having already consumed the Psychotronic Video Guide & Film Encyclopedia and various
LISTEN UP PHILLIP (2014) dir. ALEX ROSS PERRY @MFA When Schwartzman played Max in RUSHMORE, people fawned. When he played a writer turned self-employed detective in BORED TO DEATH, he really came into his own (IMHO). This new release has the man in similarly cynical, literate role—all signs are pointing to it being phenomenal. Screens through 11/12. EARLY LANG SILENTS @HFA The HFA fills in some of the gaps from their recent retrospective on German expressionist master Fritz Lang with two ultra-rare silent feature films: FOUR AROUND A WOMAN and THE WANDERING IMAGE, presented with live musical accompaniment by Jeff Rapsis! HOAX_CANULAR (2013) dir. DOMINIC GAGNON @Brattle Got any plans for the end of the world? This fascinating documentary from Quebecois filmmaker Gagnon is constructed entirely from Youtube videos of teenagers preparing for the increasingly-inevitable apocalypse. Get into your shelter, hunker down, and enjoy the fun! Director in-person! THE ABYSS (1989) dir. JAMES CAMERON @Coolidge Before turning his attention to romance on the high seas for TITANIC, James Cameron gave us this more sinister watery tale. When you gaze into THE ABYSS, Ed Harris, MIchael Biehn, drowning rats, and groundbreaking late’80s CGI effects gaze back!
PSYCHOTRONIC MOVIES IN OUR ZONE issues of the magazine, I knew all about 42nd Street and related, but already ancient, in the flesh aberrant cinema portals. I knew about, and had been to The Coolidge as well (and was already attending the awesome, still extant 24 Hour SciFi Film Marathon the theater then hosted). But I hadn’t known that they did it like, “The Beyond @ MIDNITE!!” I rounded up my proto-deviant friends, and together we departed from Weymouth for Brookline. And so I became Midnite Movie Scum. The Coolidge’s programming is, and has been for some time now, the best it’s ever been in the 17+ years since I was first handed that midnight movie apple. Take a bite. THE BEYOND is easily Fulci’s most enjoyable film. Gory, weird, and inexplicable. Let Fulci show you the way to the gates of hell over on Harvard Ave. - Dan Shea
WINTER SLEEP (2014) dir. NURI BILGE CEYLAN @MFA Ceylan—a youngish Turk revered by many as heir to Tarr and Tarkovsky’s bleak Euro-austerity—returns with his longest, most lugubrious film yet, in which hangers-on at an off-season Anatolian hotel wax metaphysical, maudlin, and at length. Palme d’Or, Cannes 2014.

North Korea remains an enigma to most of the world living outside of its secretive borders – a country whose ultra-nationalistic propaganda and militaristic rhetoric is nearly all we have on which to base our perceptions, other than occasional stories of human rights abuses from defectors. It is hard to comprehend the psychology of the average citizen who worships the head of state as a god. Yet, rather than making a simple indictment of a tyrannical regime or reductively defining the citizens as brainwashed, filmmaker Soon-Mi Yoo uses this film to explore the culture with openness and curiosity. Having been born and raised in South Korea, she is also attuned to the collective separation anxiety of a country arbitrarily divided as a result of Cold War era politics, and it’s this that brought her to

11/5—11/17 @VARIOUS LOCATIONS 43 films over 13 days in a panoply of locations – including the Brattle, Coolidge Corner, the MFA, and West Newton Cinema – this year’s BJFF celebrates a cinema of diaspora, testifying once again to the plurality of Judaisms, from the ultra-orthodox to the frankly secular, that have taken root and found unique expression in diverse locations around the world. From New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft’s perhaps eyebrow-raisingly odd endeavor to found a professional football league in Israel (TOUCHDOWN ISRAEL) to a road trip that forces a Greek atheist and his Hasidic son (who also raps) to confront their divisions as they investigate their family’s fate in the Holocaust (MAGIC MEN), the BJFF presents a rich assortment of genres and styles, with many an Ophir (the Israeli Academy Award) winner or nominee in the mix. Check out the website for a full schedule and descriptions of all the films. www.BJFF.org - Matthew Martens

Catch an exclusive advance screening! Director via Skype!
HIGHLANDER (1986) dir. RUSSELL MULCAHY @Coolidge Immortal swordsmen clash across centuries in an attempt to gain “the prize,” which basically means cutting off a lot of heads. In addition to possibly being immortal himself, Sean Connery co-stars as the wise mentor. Also screens: 11/8.

THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD (2007) dir. ANDREW DOMINIK @Coolidge A modern Western classic, this sprawling epic captures the life and death of one of America’s greatest villains – and one of its most beloved folk characters. Casey Affleck, who played the coward Robert Ford, will be at the screening in-person.
AND HER SISTERS 10 HANNAH (1986) dir. WOODY ALLEN @Coolidge When Woody Allen comes up in conversation and you want to avoid the ugly stuff, try this handy commonplace: he writes great roles for women. As evidence, bring up this brilliantly affecting ensemble piece starring Mia Farrow, Barbara Hershey, and Dianne Wiest.

NATIONAL GALLERY (2013) dir. FREDERICK WISEMAN @MFA A high brow concept developed into a well crafted documentary, this film examines a cultural treasure of Great Britain and what makes it such a unique center for Western art. Director in-person on 11/16. Screens through 11/30.

SHOCK WAVES (1977) dir. KEN WIEDERHORN @Coolidge In the surprisingly abundant subgenre of Underwater Nazi Zombie Movies, this is perhaps the high water mark. Peter Cushing plays a former SS commander on an island inhabited by his brigade of undead shocktroopers. Tagline: “Once they were ALMOST human!” Director in-person! Also screens: 11/15.

This biopic is an homage to this conflicted, daring woman. RIP.

THE BEYOND (1981) dir. LUCIO FULCI @Coolidge Equally gorey and visually arresting, the film brings Fucli’s usual eye for nightmarish imagery to full force in arguably the best work of his career. Supernatural shenanigans are afoot in a sultry Louisiana estate. And no that isn’t gumbo… Also screens: 11/22. (Read more in this month’s Psychotronic Movies in Our Zone!)
MUPPET MOVIE (1979) 29 THE dir. JAMES FRAWLEY @Coolidge A road trip film, a brilliant musical, a cameo-driven laugh machine – all accurate descriptions of THE MUPPET MOVIE, yet none capture this film in full. For their big-screen debut, the Muppets hit the road for (where else?) Hollywood.

Minuteman Commuter Bikeway (North Cambridge, Arlington Center, Lexington Center, Bedford Depot) Fall weather is perfect for biking! The cool air keeps you from getting too hot and sweaty and there's no better way to appreciate the fall colors than perched atop a comfortable bike cruising at 15mph. One of the best places to go for a ride, walk, rollerblade, or non-motorized scoot in the area is the Minuteman Trail. Stretching a comfortable (read: not too steep) 10 miles from Cambridge through Arlington, Lexington, and Bedford, the Minuteman offers gorgeous views of autumn foliage, quiet ponds, rustling fields, and poor fools stuck in traffic on I-95. The Minuteman is a fully-paved Rail Trail, meaning it was built over decommissioned railroad tracks, and is considered one of the best Rail Trails in America. If you're freaking out at how far away somewhere as exotic-sounding as “Bedford” must be, the Minuteman is conveniently T-accessible: Bring your bike on the Red Line (legal except during rush hours), hop off at Alewife, and the Minuteman starts right there. You can also get off at Davis and take the Somerville Community Path to Alewife. And once you get to Bedford there are additional trails and state highways (legal to bike on 100% of the time, seriously) leading to such places as Walden Pond, Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, Minuteman National Park, and even Lowell or New Hampshire if you're up for it. So hop on your favorite set of wheels and get outdoors before fall turns into winter and the roads turn into ice! -Harrison Bralower
