Crucial Cultural Ceremony: Boston SciFi’s 40th THON
ART BLAST.............................................PAGE 2
The Boston Science Fiction Film Festival and Marathon, known together as Boston SciFi, is an 11-day cinematic event held at one of those reel important film institutions of ours, The Somerville Theatre from February 6th to the 16th. This month’s edition marks the 40th anniversary of this odyssey, the oldest genre fest in America. I still feel my nose wrinkle in disbelief at the freakish dedication to freakdom this landmark event stands for. The significance of SF40 goes well beyond the sci-fi realm. The fact that Somerville Theatre (and The Orson Welles before it) are willing to host such a large batch of imaginations in this special way speaks to the potential for legitimate institutions to work with independent thinkers and artists of all types. Arrangements like this are all too rare but they do happen, carving out a wedge of the pie (11 days in this case) for us true believers. The closing portion of Boston Sci-Fi is The THON, a 24-hour-long group binge on far-out flicks, new and old, carefully chosen to provide a flow conducive to heavy viewing of paranormal and futuristic cinema. Surround this big, historic screen with hundreds of fans, blankets, aluminum hats, and a full circle rotation of coffee, beer, popcorn, soda, and coffee, and you’ve got yourself a very unique experience. The THON is all about vigorous appreciation. It is a rare comingtogether of minds to celebrate their amusements and expressions in such a complete way. The existence of such an event is avocation advocacy in and of itself. It is recognizing the relevance and even gravity of discovering life’s simple pleasures in art, music, film, sleeping out on the sidewalk to be first in line, what have you, and occasionally getting drenched in them. - Sam Potrykus

Somerville Winter Farmers Market, Every Sat. til March You lucky Somervillains have local produce on lockdown every Saturday from now through March over at the Center for the Arts @ The Armory from 9:30–2:00. They’ve got an epic list of vendors including farms, bakeries, wineries, cheese companies and a rotating cast of characters selling specialty items and services. Make sure to grab a Life Force Juice while you’re there and remind your body of what it really craves. Curious about the market? Peruse www.SomWinterMarket.org and explore their interactive map to find out who’s there and when. Buy food from the people who helped grow it, for your sake and our planet’s. - CEEK
Filmmaker Mak es fART A screenplay I’ve developed is moving toward production. It’s about a Northeast US community created by a Jewish messiah. Pork becomes unregulated food & a black market springs up. Some teenagers discover they get high by drinking pigs’ blood & inhaling each other’s farts to have out-of-body experiences. They discover pictures of people “huffing” simultaneously, their feet coming together in a swastika. Have they uncovered celestial illumination or are they in a losing battle with God? We need actors, crew, & lots of production people. Anyone can apply. Send an introduction, portfolio (as needed), & resume to lukejumes@gmail.com. - Luke Jumes

Boston OG Supriya Gunda has been ripping it up on stage with Hats & Glasses, Thousands, Bent Shapes, and Lost Twin for years, but Casually Defying Physics, recorded by Justin Pizzoferrato (Thurston Moore, Speedy Ortiz, Krill) represents a landmark of sorts. Her first official solo release under the DigiPOW moniker, it’s a perfect introduction to her songcraft, with titles like “béla bar talk” and “kill whitey,” as well as excellent drumming by both Emmett Jefferson “Murph” Murphy III of Dino Jr. and Cynthia Koch of Lost Twin/Sweet John Bloom. Western Mass Scene Report Franklin County, Massachusetts, neighbor to Northampton and Brattleboro, VT, has been undergoing some exciting changes. At the nexus of Turners Falls and Greenfield, the zone has been hosting more quality independent arts events than ever. At the TF Brick House Community Center, Mike Jackson and the board have been setting up shows for Palberta, Cloud Becomes Your Hand, Chris Weisman, Bromp Treb and loads of others. Across the river in Greenfield, Scott Seward (John Doe, Jr. Records) and I are running a series called JDJR that will soon see Caethua, Taboo, Father Murphy, Killer Bob, Frank Hurricane, and Little Howlin’ Wolf just to name a few. Franklin County also excels in other areas: nature, food, drink, shops, affordability, so please visit! - Matt Robidoux, Dept. of Tourism

How about a head trip? Boston has a world-class experimental jazz community, and you shouldn’t miss a chance to see one of its best ensembles. Deleuzer wraps up a residency with a show 2/1 @Washington Street Arts Center (321 Washington St. near Union Square in Somerville). Abstract strings, horns, electronics all improvising together, showing off extended performance techniques and playing pieces written especially for them by local composers. Then on Feb. 25th the band heads out on tour to Hadley, MA; Philadelphia; Baltimore; Washington, DC; and Providence, RI. Don’t miss ‘em! - Angela Sawyer
FUNKE AT FORTY: Fashion Drenched In Funk
A wiser man than myself once said, “Fashion is fabric’s lovesong.” Soon after, he was fired from his job at Banana Republic. Come 2/13, the good people @40 South St. (JP’s premier vintage boutique) are aimin’ to prove that poor man right. From 3:30 - 8:00 you can stop by and squeeeeeze into this hot spot for smooth tunes jockeyed by local great John Funke, sexy drinks, and sailin’ sales. Last-minute shoppers/boozers/movers/shakers can stop in for Valentine’s Day Eve bargains. What better gift for a lover than a maroon corduroy smock or a pair of decommissioned bowling loafers? Be there, baby. - Wheat Pullman
Prefab Messiahs back with New Record after 30 Years! This March 10, Burger Records/KLYAM will be putting out the long awaited new release (10”/cassette/CD) from Worcester neo-psych kids, the Prefeb Messiahs. Not so much “kids” anymore — but still ever-youthful as evidenced by the ageless Kris “Trip” Thompson (he of 1,000 Boston shows) — the Messiahs recorded this new joint with fierce fans/friends Doug Tuttle and Jesse Gallagher on the top floor of the Lilypad building before mixing it at singer Xerox’s homestead in rural New York. A lot of love and years in here. Don’t miss them 3/19 @The Middle East (upstairs). - Jonathan Donaldson

It’s easy for anyone to take what they have for granted, that’s not being white, that’s being human. But we’ve reached a point where ignorance can’t continue and those who are unaware of contributing to this type of oppressive mindset need to be made aware, and held accountable. Accountability is the name of the game here, folks. This workshop - which is geared towards anyone interested in writing or speaking out against racism - is about fighting it by educating each other on racism’s everyday antagonists and updating our own vocabulary as writers. Her architectural sculptures play with the viewer's perception of space and scale, blending real locations with the abstraction of memory. In her project Ellefu, she uses miniature, abstracted interior renditions of her childhood home, noting how our memories are often hard to pin down. The project Unbuilt Residences in Reykjavík, 1925-1930 uses unrealized architectural drafts of houses to then destroy and build back together. BURNT ENVELOPE

DEMO
ALIEN NATION: COLLECTED SINGLES THUS FAR
CALGARI RECORDS (2014)
SELF RELEASED (2015)
BURNT OUT TAPES (2014)
On NO LIFE, demoniac local trio HUMAN BODIES follow up on their initial demo with a six song, twelve minute gut punch of grimy hardcore punk-influenced black metal insanity. The recording here is a bit better than their previous demo and the songwriting has improved somewhat as well. The style hearkens back to classics like Darkthrone but with a grinding, noisy aesthetic that’s much more in line with the modern basement show scene than just a carbon copy of something from the 1990s. Short and not very sweet, NO LIFE exudes a raw, ugly and downright disturbing blackened punk ethos. There are no punches pulled and no quarter given in this blasphemous and bile-filled EP. The songs, short though they may be, are extremely dynamic, especially when the tempos change up a bit on tracks like ‘Covenant’ and ‘Exhibitionist’. The winter solstice may now be behind us, but let’s not kid ourselves here: the northeast will continue to be a cold, dark and inhospitable place ‘til pretty much April. NO LIFE is exactly the right kind of soundtrack for the soul-sucking icy months ahead. Turn it on and rip it up! -John Bittrich
RUTH GARBUS JOULE EP
The hardest, toughest, meanest hardcore punk demo of 2015 may already be here and it’s femme, trans-inclusive and queer as hell. G.L.O.S.S. (aka Girls Living Outside Society’s Shit) are based in Olympia and feature members of some old Boston bands including Parasol and Peeple Watchin’, but the sound is much fiercer and noisier and more explosive than anything either of those bands ever accomplished. The G.L.O.S.S. demo is pure hardcore rage, sometimes leaning d-beat, other times more classic US hardcore, with lyrics that tackle, headlong, the simmering frustrations of being a genuine outcast. While these frustrations are sometimes born of normal “straight” society (the desire not to be “straight and repressed/emotions grotesque/ready for war and the cubicle desk”) they are just as often a product of the macho, male-dominated DIY hardcore scene itself, with lyrics declaring that “the straight male canon is a royal bore” and “trendy mutant skinheads can jerk themselves off”. Let me be clear on this point: none of this seems like a gimmick, and it doesn’t feel in the slightest bit like an attempt to be confrontational to draw attention to their band. The sentiments ring as honest and true as any I’ve heard in a long time and the music will draw plenty of attention on its own. Their shit is FUCKING TIGHT. It would be a great first statement from a hardcore band comprised entirely of straight, white boys. But it’s an INCREDIBLE first statement because it isn’t that at all. -John Bittrich
DISTANT CASTLE (V/A) LIVING AFTER MIDNIGHT 2015
LOWER PLENTY
OSR TAPES (2014) Gently intoxicating. Know this about RUTH GARBUS’ latest record, JOULE EP, and really, all of Ruth Garbus’ music, ever. This daughter of Brattleboro, she does not court attention of any kind, in the grand tradition of the denizens of Brattleboro. And yet they, and she, do not toil away inconsequentially. No. However, maybe you find out that they released a record (online album/ 7") some 8 months after they actually did so. Maybe. Garbus is one of the quietest performers I have ever seen play, so remember when you mob her next live performance: be quiet, ok? But on record? On record, the “studio of our minds and her imagination” has her back, and her songwriting soars above our/your head, and there’s some whistling, and pitch shifted guitars, and you’re all like, “Bedroom pop, wasn’t that the 90s? But Syd Barrett happened in the 60s?” And yet here is Ruth Garbus. Here she is. “Hippies cash flow is strong, Stopped at Walmart just to buy a bong” How does Ruth know what I’m thinking? Why won’t she give us more than 5 songs? Ruth, if you are going to make 5 songs that creep the corridors of my mind, reminding me of good memories all the way through. If you are going to make 5 songs that my whole family: my wife Meg, my son Zachary, myself, that we can can all enjoy. A 5 song album that ends with a fantastical guitar bliss-out called ‘June’, and that features quite possibly the New England underground pop song of the year in ‘Certain Kind.’ If you are going to do that, you are going to be leaving a whole bunch of people wanting more, because I can’t be the only one! So, totally, on my end of year lists (that I just posted). Happy 2015. Also available as a 7" on the potent OSR Tapes. -Dan Shea
BURNT ENVELOPE is one of the many projects of W.Mass’ Tony Pasquarosa (SQRM, World Domination, Crystalline Roses, etc). In a similar vein to his Gluebag project, Burnt Envelope plays punk influenced in part by both classic rock and folk rock. ALIEN NATION: COLLECTED SINGLES THUS FAR collects 14 of these tracks, from seven unreleased singles by the band. Covers of tracks by the likes of The Doors, Lazy Smoke, and The Ramones (a particularly great cover of ‘Poison Heart’) give you an idea of what you’re in for. The nearly spoken vocals and hazy guitar give these songs a feel somewhere between campfire songs and lo-fi bedroom punk. Again, the only real comparison that comes to mind for Burnt Envelope is Gluebag, only more intimate and chilled out, although there are moments that sound like they could be from the spacey psych-punk of a World Domination track too. While KBD-punk should be viewed as a frame of reference for this music, these projects’ overlap and multiplication show an immensely personal vision built more on an evolving musical cosmos than the influences and traditions they grow from. These may or may not still be available from Tony on his new label Burnt Out Tapes. -Chris Defalco
SELF RELEASED (2015) LIFE/THRILLS BEDROOM SUCK RECORDS/ MEXICAN SUMMER (2014) It’s no big secret that Australia has a mean music community, one that consistently surprises. Exhibit A: Melbourne-based LOWER PLENTY. Named after the Melbourne suburb, this quartet is comprised of members of other great Aussie acts UV Race, Deaf Wish, Total Control, and The Focus. But unlike those aforementioned groups, Lower Plenty takes a turn away from the harsher, aggressive towards something softer but no less impressive. Here, the band’s brand of folk rock is sleepy but poignant, their compositions a shambling mass of soft whistles and steady strumming, arranged in beautifully disjointed patterns. Their latest release LIFE THRILLS, being brought to the US by Mexican Summer via Brisbane’s Bedroom Suck Records, is a minimal but impactful album, one that sets out to prove that few instruments can be transformed into large sound. The songs are composed primarily of steady, rambling acoustic guitar and a medley of quiet percussion. This lends a kind of unraveled feel to these songs, as if once the instruments and vocals were put together they were then deliberately unwoven. This gives the album a lightly frazzled and meandering tone, every song initially heading in one direction only to get lost and wander off in another. ‘Lower Plenty’ capture the kind of erratic emotions that inspire the lyrics to these songs. In contrast to the quirks of the instrumentation, the vocals are more straightforward. With throaty and warm voices and harmonies, the songs achieve the sentimental and nostalgic mood one could savory for hours. Keep surprising us, Australia. -Mary Kate McGrath
Somewhere, beyond the western reaches of commuter rail, sits a haus of unquestionable importance that marks perhaps the most distal grasp of Boston’s underground scene. This is the DISTANT CASTLE of Worcester, and in celebration of the artists they’ve hosted, and will continue to into the new year, they’ve dropped a comp of fresh tracks–mostly from Worcester artists– to ring in 2015. LIVING AFTER MIDNIGHT 2015 includes bands you’ve likely heard of, like Worcester’s own Secret Lover performing the brutally honest ‘Sometimes Wine Becomes My Lover’ along with ones you haven’t, like Granny Frost (also from Worcester) doing their weird-fi pop tune ‘Golden Opportunities’. Of course, it wouldn’t be a New England comp without a dose of some doom, provided by (but not limited to) tracks from Eaten, OJ, Tremarche, The Terribles, SET, and Talchemist; and some unexpected peculiarity, provided by A. Reid in ‘Harriet Hemenway’s Bird Report,’ which is, remarkably, exactly what it says it is. Rounding out this comp is a fitting tribute to none other than Polar Seltzer (‘I Love The Way U Sparkle’), perhaps Worcester’s most recognized export. It’s a multi-layered, multi-part, and most importantly, weird, treat that’s representative of this collection of tracks as a whole. The lesson? Those of us who live in Boston might be too quick to characterize Worcester as a cultural dead zone. Cheap rent and post-industrial grit does wonders for keeping the DIY ethic alive. Living After Midnight makes a strong case for us Bostonians to embark on a leftmost train this year and visit our musical brethren in a land far, far away only in Massachusetts terms. Though, the bus is probably cheaper. Keep an eye out for a cassette edition in February. Meanwhile, download it for free on Bandcamp. - Sarah Moylan
Shadrach Minkins was born into slavery in Norfolk, VA circa 1814. On May 3, 1850 he escaped his enslavers and fled to Boston. There he found refuge in the free black community on Beacon Hill, a job waiting tables at Taft’s Cornhill Coffee Shop, and support from the Boston Vigilance Committee, founded in 1841 to “secure to persons of color the enjoyment of their constitutional and legal rights.” Meanwhile, the Nation and its leaders polarized around the issue of slavery. Following Mexico’s surrender to US armed forces in 1848, the newly acquired Southwestern territories promised to upset the balance between Free and Slave States. Fearing an opposing political majority would threaten their rights and interests, each side braced for civil war. To avert such disaster Congress passed the Compromise of 1850, a bill that made concessions to both North and South regarding slavery and the new territories. The Fugitive Slave Law was a controversial provision, which mandated that Northern authorities and citizens aid Southern slave owners in recovering their missing property. The Boston Vigilance Committee criticized the Fugitive Slave Law as a Federal imposition upon State’s rights, and for being immoral and unconstitutional. Blacks accused of fleeing slavery were not entitled to a fair trial, nor was any proof of ownership required for arrest, simply the word of the slaveholder. Furthermore, penalties for aiding fugitive slaves or for refusing to cooperate with authorities were severe, including stiff fines and prison sentences. Despite the dangers, the Vigilance Committee published articles, distributed pamphlets and hung broadsides throughout the city criticizing the law and warning blacks and their allies to be wary of the police. On February 15, 1851 US marshals apprehended Shadrach Minkins while at work, arresting him to the nearby courthouse to await his return to Norfolk. The Vigilance Committee was quick to the scene, surrounding then occupying the courthouse with an angry mob, overrunning the marshals and stealing Minkins away in the melee. Minkins hid in a Beacon Hill attic until he was safely smuggled aboard the Underground Railroad to Montreal where he lived free for the remainder of his days as a husband, father and barber. President Millard Fillmore was livid over the insurrection in Boston, sending in the National Guard to cap mob violence and enforce fugitive slave captures. The President demanded that the Vigilance Committee be condemned for Minkin’s escape. Nine members were indicted but charges were dropped against seven before trial. The remaining two defendants, black Abolitionist attorneys Lewis Hayden and Robert Morris, were tried for treason. However, both men were acquitted by a Boston jury resentful of the military occupation, and unsympathetic to the Southern slaveholder and the Federal effort to preserve a Union at the expense of the principle of Liberty. Ronald Reagan AT THE 7-11
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA JULY 3, 1996, 3:12am (transcription by katie mccarthy) I’ll take 2 scratchies—your pick, buddy— and this fudge cube, please. Say, why don’t you have Chapstick available in a non-cherry flavor? Fruit gives some of us the runs. “Mr. President?” No—please! I prefer that people call me “Ron” even though it sounds so serious —and that’s not who I am. Which brings me to my next topic: I’ll betcha can’t smell anything underwater. Otherwise, fish would all die if they knew what they smelled like (bad.) And that would be a probably smellier situation if that happened! I hate smelling things. Yeah, I would be really happy if I could be in a place with one less thing to have worried nightmares about because I’ve peed on through all our sheets and Nancy says we can’t buy anymore.
ELLEN BOJANEK
I wonder what it would be like to live in the sea. I wonder if anyone is a person and fish at once. Nancy, please, let me finish; I know the word for it. Stop breathing near me. Okay, yup, fine. Guess you’re right and Tony
Scalia lied to me (it’s not “chunderfucks” but “mermen.”)
I’d love to be a merman. Ronnie the Merman. Merman Ron. Hmm, I don’t think I could give up air, so I could stick my head above water sometimes. But mostly I would be in water. Maybe a nickname I could have when I was above water would be “Airguy” and when I was below: “Waterguy.” That’s really funny. I can’t stop laughing.
I’ve finished laughing. I want my tail to be green. In China, green is a sexy color. Should probably swim around China when I’m a merman. Because they would not try to catch me because I’d be too handsome. Maybe they’d take a picture or blow a kiss but that’s just the price you pay when you are a seahunk. Plus, no one would try to eat a merman because our bones would be too tough. I feel like you’d get extra strong bones with the constant exercise. Plus a man with tough bones gets instant respect.
Being a merman would be great also because I’d get to be barechested more (which was one of my resolutions for 1989; never followed through with it though!) Bet I would have if I had shiny gills to show off instead of nipples.
I need how much more for the credit card minimum? Nancy, it’s your turn to pick out a jerky. I’m tired of being the one who always has to decide.
FEATURED FILM SERIES DAMN FINE CINEMA: THE FILMS OF DAVID LYNCH 2/23 - 3/5, @BRATTLE BRATTLEFILM.ORG Lynch has been less than prolific lately; next year's TWIN PEAKS reboot will be his first sustained narrative since 2006's INLAND EMPIRE (if "sustained narrative" can even describe either). Yet, he seems more present than ever. He's kept himself busy: opening a Transcendentalist meditation college, releasing two (surprisingly excellent) albums, and marketing a (unsurprisingly excellent) signature coffee blend. Moreover, his influence can be found everywhere: in filmmakers Jonathan Glazer and Nicolas Winding Refn; TV shows TRUE DETECTIVE and HANNIBAL; and musicians Chelsea Wolfe and Lana Del Ray. Chalk it up to the fact that weird times call for weird art. Lynch’s fractured narratives, existential nightmares, and obsessions with lumber fit the bill. Or, maybe, it’s just easier to revisit TWIN PEAKS on DVD and Netflix than VHS and reruns. - Oscar Goff
FEATURED CIN-EVENT THE FILMS OF STANLEY KUBRICK 2/4 - 2/28, @MFA MFA.ORG There’s Stanley Kubrick, and then there’s everyone else. A provocative, intellectual, and experimental perfectionist, he was truly one of a kind, working in a variety of genres – war, science fiction, crime, horror – leaving an undeniable impression on them all. No shot, word, or detail wasn’t mulled over by this demanding filmmaker, causing stress to his crew and sublime cinema for us. The MFA will be screening the entirety of his canon the way it was meant to be seen: in 35mm! Witness every iconic moment in its original format, from the appearance of the starchild floating in space set to Thus
Spoke Zarathustra to hundreds of loyal slave soldiers screaming “I am Spartacus!” to save their revolutionary leader a terrible death. - Pablo Torroella
a shelf somewhere, even if that somewhere is Harvard University (though maybe more often than one might imagine, considering the extended print of the original THE WICKER MAN (1973) was uncovered there last year, making you wonder what else they're hiding). It's also particularly remarkable when said film is in decent condition despite being on highly unstable and wonderfully explosive nitrate film stock. It's quite lucky that Robert Flaherty's A NIGHT OF STORYTELING (OIDHCHE SHEANCHAIS) (1935) even exists, let alone is being shown (on 35mm) after the last known copies went up in flames more than 70 years ago. Though it's only 11 minutes, it holds the distinction of being the first Gaelic-language sound film and stars the cast of Flaherty's famous, feature-length MAN OF ARAN (1934), which screens right after it. - Stefan Grabowski
PSYCHOTRONIC MOVIES IN OUR ZONE 40TH ANNUAL 24 HOUR BOSTON SCIENCE FICTION FILM MARATHON 2/15, 12:00PM - 2/16, 12:00PM, @SOMERVILLE BOSTONSCIFI.COM This year will be my 19th attending what I consider, at this point, one gnarly American tradition: The 40th Annual 24 Hour Boston Science Fiction Film Marathon. Science fiction goes way back, with the more recent development of the Sci-Fi film delivering its message with particular exuberance. From Fritz Lang’s METROPOLIS (1927), and James Whale’s FRANKENSTEIN (1931), on through Rod Serling and 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968), and beyond... Science fiction delivers on being the most philosophical of genres – “a literature of ideas” according to Pamela Sargent. Here in Boston exists the oldest genre film festival in the world! It, of course, is a celebration of the best genre that exists in this world of ours: SCIENCE FICTION. Lester del Rey said “there are no easily delineated limits to science fiction” and this is precisely why it’s the pinnacle of all genres. SciFi will often surprise and expand the minds of its consumers. These consumers, in turn, often come away from it with new ideas; a beautiful exchange
In this wrenching WWI film, Kirk Douglas is a French officer defending his troops against a mutiny charge and imminent execution. An earlier Kubrick, this film contains hints of his bleak view of humanity. See it for the final scenes alone. Also screens: 2/6.
6 ACTRESS (2013)
dir. Robert Greene @BRATTLE A Cassavettian documentary in which Brandy Burre, yeowoman actress and veteran of HBO’s THE WIRE, plays (and is) herself: a suburban housewife and mother of two who, somewhat to her own surprise, finds she’s eager to revive her career. Screens through 2/11. Director in-person 2/9!
7 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968) dir. Stanley Kubrick @MFA
Perhaps the film to prove that a big-budget Hollywood blockbuster could also be an arthouse classic, 2001 remains as heavy as it was in 1968. It’s also the film for which Kubrick won his sole Oscar – for special effects. Screens through 2/27. dir. Sam Raimi @COOLIDGE

5 PATHS OF GLORY (1959)
if there ever was one. Come celebrate the genre with film. Join in on this singular, stellar, annual event. A real Boston experience. Davis Square is a great place to hang out in for 24+ hours. Tell Garen that the Compass/Hassle sent you. This year’s line-up includes: THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (1951), 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY w/ special guest Douglas Trumbull, THIS ISLAND EARTH (1955), THEM! (1954), MOONRAKER (1979), and many more! Max ups to the DICK MILLER FAN CLUB. - Dan Shea
Following the misadventures of everyman Ash Williams, this sequel dials up the gore and camp. Evil spirits, demonic trees, chainsaw arms... what's not to love? This screening features expert Steven Schlozman speaking on just why we enjoy these gruesome films.
20 BARRY LYNDON (1975)
dir. Stanley Kubrick @MFA
23 NE ME QUITTE PAS (2013)
dir. Sabine Lubbe Bakker & Nils Vans Koevorden @BRATTLE Meet Bob and Marcel, Belgian drunks (I mean, farmers who drink) whose sad, funny, sometimes stupid adventures are liable to put you in mind of a sodden, stumbling Beckett. Bakker’s second doc confirms her gift for sympathetic, slightly gonzo character studies. The DocYard presents! Directors via Skype!
24 TWIN PEAKS PILOT (1990)
dir. David Lynch @BRATTLE The now iconic tale of murder and mystery in a sleepy, eccentric logging town has captivated audiences over the past 25 years. Though an amazing production through-andthrough, the feature length pilot achieved a height that later episodes only scratched at. FREE!
25 ERASERHEAD (1977)
dir. David Lynch @BRATTLE Henry is horrified to discover he has a baby, but then again “they’re not really sure it is a baby.” In this oily black & white horror, Henry X cuts through his fatherly insanity with visions of the lady in the radiator. N.B. it’s a 35mm print. EYES WIDE SHUT (1999) dir. Stanley Kubrick @MFA A strange, most eerie dive in the dark depths of sexuality – the final aria in a body of incredible work. A perfect swan song for Kubrick who died still working on this journey into cults, masquerades, and eroticism.
SHORTS PROGRAM (1966 1970) dir. David Lynch @BRATTLE Did you know that, before making fucked up features, David Lynch made fucked up student films? It’s true! These shorts go back to the very beginning of Lynch’s career, including THE ALPHABET, THE GRANDMOTHER, SIX MEN GETTING SICK, and more!
27 DUNE (1984)
dir. David Lynch @BRATTLE Okay, okay, we’re all heartbroken it wasn’t Jodorowsky’s and everyone pans this film as awful. However, if you’re willing to sit through this horribly long film, you can expect to be rewarded with a truly surreal vision of Frank Herbert’s opus. MAPS TO THE STARS (2014) dir. David Cronenberg @COOLIDGE The filmmaking madman of The Great White North will be in attendance to discuss his most recent movie concerning celebrity culture, familial inferiority complexes and scar tissue. In other words, Cronenberg doing what he does best. Also screens: 2/28. Director in-person!
28 BLUE VELVET (1986)
dir. David Lynch @BRATTLE A deviant and incendiary mystery set in the wholesome Pacific Northwest, this whodunit has lost none of its power decades later in its ability to disgust, enrapture and cause awe in regard to its surreal craft and ballsy artistry.
RABID (1977) DIR. DAVID CRONENBERG
Famous for its technical achievements, this 18th century epic follows the fortunes and downfall of the roguish Barry. The grand historical sweep makes its characters feel like toy soldiers: “… good or bad, handsome or ugly, rich or poor, they are all equal now.” Also screens: 2/21. DEAD RINGERS (1988) dir.DavidCronenberg@COOLIDGE Jeremy Irons plays twin gynecologists involved with the same woman. Body horror, psychodrama, terrifyingly outlandish medical implements, and tearful monologues about cake ensue. The centerpoint of the Cronenberg Venn diagram – contains both respectable, well-acted drama AND squirm-inducing anatomical creepiness! Also screens: 2/21.
2/6 @COOLIDGE Let the dreaded truth be told: morphogenetic neutrality is a lie! Alas, the plague's work is done. New flesh or old, bio always equals hazard. A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (1971) DIR. STANLEY KUBRICK
21 THE SHINING (1980)
dir. Stanley Kubrick @MFA “HEEEERRRREEEE’S, JOHNNY!!!!!” Actor Jack Nicholson cemented his status in pop culture as a flawed father who begins a downward spiral when he agrees to look after a secluded hotel. Warning: keep baseball bats and axes away from this guy. Also screens: 2/22.
22 HOME FROM HOME -
CHRONICLE OF A VISION (2013) dir. Edgar Reitz @COOLIDGE A vast tale of a village in the Rhineland, where destitute farmers make a choice between their homeland and emigrating to Brazil. A harrowing plot, with an epic scope, the film is noteworthy as part of a four-decade saga of films and for it’s 3h 44min length. Goethe-Institut presents!

Kung Fu Video & DVD 365 Washington St # 2 Boston, MA Situated along a boring stretch of Washington Street in downtown Boston (above a jewelry marketplace) is Kung Fu Video & DVD, a niche video store focusing on a wide range of martial-arts, anime & Asian films on DVD. They exist, against all odds in an area of Boston (downtown) that has for years been experiencing a severe leaching of anything and everything that is interesting or of a sociologically independent nature. How, you might rightly ask, does a store remain viable selling martial arts dvds in a brick and mortar in 2014? Well, they also sell glass, and all manner of related product is the answer of course! Beyond serving as a resource for the 2 very important aforementioned pursuits, KUNG FU VIDEO & DVD, also offers itself up as a hub of Boston area hip-hop and related music. Stop in and get caught up on what is happening in your city. In fact bring your stuff down, hip hop, or not. This is a place that celebrates community. Make it part of yours, ask them to sell your art/music. The folks who run this store are long time supporters of the Compass who I give my absolute, 100% stamp of approval to. Give them your business. May more small businesses open up that are run by people like the ones Pat Chaney behind this downtown oasis. Dan Shea
