En MASSe. THE PARTICIPATORY NATURE OF NEW ENGLAND
Thanks for picking up Compass #56! Whether you’re scanning the rag for the first time or this is a routine reading sesh, you should know that you’re crawling around in a boundless web of culture spun by countless participants, just by virtue of being in New England. That’s how it works here and we are proud to be part of it. Our mission statement: To foster an innovative, compelling, and interconnected music, art, and film community in greater Boston and beyond through grassroots, inclusive, participatory culture. Arguably, the indispensable word in that mouthful is PARTICIPATORY. It’s not only the crux of our organization, as we work to publish the Boston Compass newspaper, run the Boston Hassle websize, and present nearly a dozen shows a month with the Boston Hassle show booking concern, it’s been the key to the success of the entire New England arts scene. We are all volunteers, with no budget or compensation. None! We began as individuals, gained momentum as a collective, and continue to answer our calling, now as a full-blown autonomous non-
profit organization. This is the natural evolution of participatory culture. Although your mind may already run wild at the mere utterance, the breadth of activities that hunker under the umbrella of this fancy phrase are, at least with regard to the Hassle, even more vast than you might imagine. Allow me to parade an array of scenarios before you. If you show this paper to your friend, you are participating. If you widely distribute this paper, or other flyers, you are participating. If you throw shows, draw, play in a band, make art, compile a zine, or volunteer your time to furthering the arts in any capacity, you are participating. By HAVING IDEAS you are participating. Those who contribute $2 a month to our Patron 21 reader-support platform, even if they never leave their apartment? They, too, are participating in keeping this organic organism alive. In fact, if you’re reading this right now, you are participating. The trickle-down effect of even the most mellow involvement in a scene such as ours can’t be underestimated. It’s simply invaluable. Celebrate the wonders of participatory culture and get busy with yourself. - Sam Potrykus

PATRICK BRYANT: SLOUCHING TOWARD SOMERVILLE CD So, Somerville sports a print newspaper especially for elderly residents. Each week the paper prints a page of reader complaints culled from a telephone answering machine. PATRICK BRYANT of WMBR then re-enacts these ultralocal concerns over lounge instrumentals on his radio show. Learn about dogs and their business, traffic regulations, yuppies and Canadians, trash in yards, what to do with boobs, which bars are gay, how to wear pants, park etiquette, and other burning political issues made small. Just released on the spectacular local label Teenbeat (sending great sounds to your ears since 1984). Get it at Weirdo. - Angela Sawyer FLUNK SCHOOL, JOIN FILM FLAM School’s back in session and it can be, as our friend Ferris points out, “a little childish and stupid.” So pretend you have a stomachache, lick your hands, and call in sick. You: a dedicated person who loves movies as much as candy and wants to write about them for the Hassle. Us: the Hassle. We’ll help make your dreams come true. More than 100 films play Boston monthly and you can help make sure that people see as many of them as possible. Interested? Email us at BostonHassleFilm@gmail.com and we’ll get back to you in no time. - Ari Shvartsman “IAN” BY IAN: GIVIN’ YOU ALL THE FEELS What is it about wobbly words of longing spun wispily over a pounding, melodic-ass rock band that causes the spine to melt into sweet pools of lardjuice? Us muggles may never know, but IAN understands the magic. A pop trio til death, the band emanates a deeply heartfelt ethereal material the likes of which you mighta found when sneaking downstairs to watch MTV2 at 4 AM before your parents could catch ya, ca. 1996. ‘Cept crookeder, sadder, tenser, cathartic-er. They got a new tape named “IAN” out on JP publishing haus of repute, BUFU records. Also eyyunn.bandcamp.com. COMPASS KETCHUP If you haven’t had the pleasure, then prepare to meet the artist/activist/educator MARGARET BELLAFIORE, who has been making her presence known in the Boston community for over 20 years now. Bellafiore made her way to Boston from her Staten Island hometown while studying at SMFA. After graduating in 1993, she became involved with MOBIUS and has been a Mobius Artist Group member ever since. “Mobius is a unique organization, as we run the space ourselves,” remarks Bellafiore, “and that is a daunting undertaking in these difficult economic times for artists. Daunting, but supportive of each other and each other’s art practice.” Over the years she’s collaborated on a number of experimental projects with the non-profit arts org, participated in their artist exchange program to Macedonia and Croatia and exhibited a broad range of work in its Central Square location. Her first installation at Mobius was the award-winning “On Becoming My Great Grandmother,” a collection of anecdotal histories that attempted to capture the little of what individuals heard or remembered about their great grandmothers. Since then, the scope of her work has expanded to investigate an array of social, political and environmental issues. 2008’s sound installation “Combat to Campus” featured interviews with veterans returning to Bridgewater State (where Bellafiore is currently a professor of fine art) while “The New Earth” addressed global warming and subsequent natural disasters. (By the way, she’s also a Climate Reality Leader, after having completed a training program initiated by Al Gore.) You can learn more about the artist for yourself at her upcoming exhibition “BODY LANGUAGE: AN INTERACTIVE INSTALLATION EXPLORING THE IMPACT OF TRAUMA” @Mobius (55 Norfolk St, Cambridge) 9/13 & 9/14. This collaborative project with writer and activist CHRISTINE CISSY WHITE attempts to communicate our emotional and physical reactions to severe stress, and explores “how the brain/body responds to trauma.” www.Mobius.com - Scout Hutchinson
DeGreaser- Rougher Squalor Ever/Never Records (2014) It takes a deft hand and a solid ear (not to mention a rounded scoop of chutzpah) to dress up a familiar genre in new clothes. In the past few years we’ve seen Big Mess give Delta blues a doomy makeover, we’ve seen Cowboy Band bring the chaps and stirrups into the garage – there are plenty of other examples – and now Brooklyn’s Degreaser is adding a bit more grit to the all-denim getup of yesteryear’s psychedelia. This powerhouse trio has its roots deep in oldschool psych-rock: the fat bass tone, the blistering staccato guitar on the interludes, and the squelching off-kilter wah effect make you feel like you’re spacing out in the trunk of a VW Microbus (RIP) lost somewhere in the middle of a corn field. But the knick-knacks inside that beastly bus are modern, harsher: the gang vocals are eerie and edgy; slicing tritone riffage lunges at you with enough force to break a rib; the song-structures are chaotic and the bands gets its jollies stalling on high-tension chords backed with thunderous drum build-ups. And the production is the perfect package for Degreaser’s sound – fuzzed just enough to make those booming mega-chords menace just the right way, wrapping the whole ensemble in that organic single-coil buzz. “hole in my head” offers a perfect example of Degreaser’s ability to blend the old and the new: the band takes a nothing-but-punk powerchord rant and casually slides it into a Hendrixesque chord-n-lick freakout. Snag the full LP from Ever/Never Records and keep this New York caravan on your radar! - Dean Antonio
BOSTON HASSLE BRIEFS
Beth Israel – Dental Denial Dull Tools (2014) A duo with only a s/t cassette to their name prior to this release, their music vibes homemade concoction far more than studio product. A 4track collage feel snakes throughout the entirety of DENTAL DENIAL. This is no song after song deal. Instead each song (there’s 11 here) comes across as a hand crafted and labored over composition. Rock music, but no mere rock songs. Songs reek of experimentation. Synthesizers flow. “Dead Bodies” is one of the standouts on this record. Bass and guitar lead the way, telling us we’re in for a jangle pop rock number, but then a hook laden synth pushes its way in. So great. Dark jangle synth pop (I don’t write those words out, in that sequence, very often). Vocals recall Boston underground heroes of the recent past KID ROMANCE. Then we get to “Statue In The Car” and all hell breaks loose. The guitar riff melody is one of my tops of the year it must be said. The interplay between drums, bass, and guitar during these riff sections is some kind of sublime. Easy going, but with enough forward momentum to keep em boppin’. What does this remind me of? I'm not sure, but this song is a classic straight out of the gate. I have played this one for my little baby boy Zachary several times, and you know what? I’m going to continue to do so cuz he loves it. Big time repeat pressing motivation. Go to the site! LISTEN YOURSELF! - Dan Shea
V/A - YDLMIER 050 Ydlmier (2014) Back in July I witnessed a wild and woolly midsummer’s melding of the minds featuring many of the area’s greatest weirdos. The reason for the season? The release of YDLMIER 050, the fiftieth (!) release by Somerville’s YDLMIER label, a neatly-packaged DIY box set comprised of three whole cassettes’ worth of Recent kick-ass. Now here we are about a month later, which is about the amount of time it actually takes to really properly take in so much music, and I’m finally ready to profiles tell you all about it. from While an outsider’s perspective on “out” music might www. be as something cold and unapproachable, maybe even downright hostile, there is very little of that attitude on boston display here. That hostility can definitely be a part of the hassle noise scene, but the bubbles and gurgles, laser sounds, .com laptop explosions and contact mic weirdness that take up much of YDLMIER 050 sound warm and inviting to my ears. Perhaps this is because of the nature of the project itself: 50 projects celebrating 50 releases by a man who's devoted much of his life to exposing people to sounds they never even knew they needed to hear. What could As always visit be LESS hostile than that?! www.BostonHassle.com I could tell you about the standout tracks. About how Side B is start-to-finish perfect and Greg Kelley‘s track for vids and streams of all the artists and is a beautiful tribute to New England now that he’s left albums profiled here! us for the left coast. But the project is best taken as a + If you think you know whole. Dive in and feel refreshed. - John Bittrich something about contemporary music, or simply want to GO FOR IT, send us an email and we’ll get you in the mix, stat! Lair – S/T Surveillance Investments (2014) Lair, spawned from the lives of Alek Glasrud and John Moxley, is a grooving and phantasmagoric locomotive of a duo with a huge sound. They’re characterized mostly by Moxley’s repetitive flowing rhythms à la krautrock and Glasrud’s looping synthesizer/guitar copulations. The band’s polychromatic compositions cycle a variety of weird realms, each one fresh in comparison to the last. The first track, Galactic Agent, opens with a wonky drone that quickly transitions into a medley of bubbling synth and guitar fanfare. Its an intro that sets the tone well for the rest of the album, oscillating as it does between smooth grooves, tense ascensions, and playful vitality. The juxtaposition between side A closer “Valentine Michael Smith” and side B opener “Chameleon” is probably the most clear illustration of this dynamic, with the tensionbuilding loops and nervous harmonies of the former track resolving into the flowing krautrock-y rhythm and chill feel of the latter. - Damon Hastings In Boston on September 25 1690 independent journalist Benjamin Harris published the first newspaper printed in the American Colonies. Harris introduces the 4-page publication, Publick Occurrences, Both Forreign and Domestick, by describing his intention to “furnish…an account of such considerable things as have arrived unto our notice,” so that “people everywhere may better understand the circumstances of public affairs, both abroad and at home.” The domestic news from September 1690 includes several accounts of conflicts between New England pioneers and Indians, missionary work with Indian villages, the abatement of a small pox outbreak in Boston and other public health matters, a dramatic suicide in Boston by an elderly man, and news from battlefronts with French-Indian forces in New Hampshire, Maine and Canada. British Empire battlefronts in the Caribbean and Ireland are summarized, and foreign news is concluded with a bit of scandalous gossip on the incestuous French royal family. The final page is left blank so readers may handwrite amendments to the news stories and introduce new ones before redistributing.
I’d M Thfft Able - I Suck Am The Eye Suck In The Sky Suck Brise-Cul Records (2014) Cathartic new transmission from the Portland, Maine’s own I’D M THFFT ABLE, here re-configured to I’d M Thfft Able. I Suck Am The Eye Suck In The Sky Suck just got unleashed on Montreal’s Brise-Cul Records on a sweet little C23 in a batch including tapes by Vertonen and Echo Beds. “865” occupies the A-Side, with the theftable in full-on digital/ collage mode. His sound finds the bridge between classic concretists like Pierre Schaeffer and newer data-processors like D/P/I and Ahnnu. Snatches of pop music deteriorate over broken radio transmissions and tonal drone. Most of the “news” segments that interject relate to age and birthdays. On the B-side-length title track, age is addressed in an absurdist session of live performance group therapy. As far as I can tell, this was recorded in concert, with Mr. Able leading the crowd through a march of “I suck” and “Fuck It” chants. Some of these self-annihilations become specifically oriented towards the mirror of the internet – seeing your body, aging, digitally, noticing things (weight, skin) that you might not have before. It all has the air of D/P/I’s equally absurd (and beautiful) Elliot Hulse-rework “Depression Session,“ but moves the magic off of YouTube and into a communal, physical space. - Matty McBride
British law prohibited independent publications of any kind. Within four days the Governour & Council issued a declaration that Harris “presumed to print and disperse a pamphlet…without… authority,” and ordered “said pamphlet…be suppress’d and called in; strictly forbidding any person…to…print without license first obtained from…the Government.” Every undistributed copy was confiscated and destroyed. The one known surviving copy is now housed in the British Library. Harris had previously served jail time in London for publishing seditious material. After fleeing to Boston he operated a coffeehouse and bookstore, which served as a popular meeting place for political discourse, surely inspiring and informing the short-lived Publick Occurrences. He later returned to England and continued to publish without a license.

The Ovens – Melters (2014) Tony Molina has garnered a great deal of acclaim over the last couple of years as some of the recordings that he made under his own name began to find their way into the hands of a larger circle of ears, leading eventually to MATADOR RECORDS. I first heard his solo stuff somewhere along that timeline leading to MATADOR, and a ways back Maxwell Parrot wrote about his DISSED AND DISMISSED record. He was also in the band VIOLENT CHANGE that we’ve written about as well, (though not anymore it would appear). I am into the straight TONY MOLINA brand of pop, and if you are too you probably should check out THE OVENS. Molina’s pre-solo band is what the record label (MELTERS) is saying about the band in reference to the X they just put out by them, spurred on no doubt by Molina’s recent success. The X is only called , and the reason that more thought wasn’t put into the name probably stems from the fact that the tracks were recorded back in 2005 by the band, but are only seeing the light of day for the first time right now with this MELTERS release. XXamounts to the fourth release by THE OVENS, a now defunct part of Tony Molina’s history, but nevertheless an amazing band for the right kind of listener. I really love this band and their music. I mean, I also love the first two Weezer records. And I also have a great story that makes the band special to me too. Wanna hear it? Check out full review on the Hassle site for my way cool story! - Dan Shea

Take three giant breaths and gently lower your eyelids (but keep them open enough so you can read this). Picture this. You are standing on a verdant hill at dusk. Pink swells in the sky and the horizon is sort of... yellowy. Breathe. On your shoulder, you feel the clutch of a bird’s claws. A small yet majestic bird of green and red raises his wings and kind of gets a feather in your ear.
“Hello,” he says. “I’m Chippers and I have many things to show you. Trust in me as we take a journey to places you have yet to spiritually mine.” Feel the tiny body raise you up and float you through the night sky, releasing you from the binding of gravity kind of not really. Look, just roll with it. Above glows a giant clock in the sky with a smiling face. What time does it display? Friends is on at 8; that’s the only reason I ask. Breathe. Feel your body swing forward as Chippers swoops you down into a giant computer screen in which MS Paint is open. Feel the static electricity of information enliven you. He says, “I want you to visualize the essence of your life’s troubles. Now visualize yourself erasing them bit by bit. You can use your hand if it makes it feel more real!” Doesn’t that feel good? Sorrows dissipating pixel by pixel! But it’s time to move on. Chippers tries to lift you again but instead you find yourself dropped into an open window of Google Chrome. Suddenly, you happen upon an internet archive of Clay Aiken commemorative pins. Look! Remember the time he played in Western
STARS AMONG ME by TD SIDELL
New York? Moreover, the zucchini sticks at the Holiday Inn? How many pins can you fit on your mind’s body? You can’t fit any more! You have attached them to every surface on your clothing. Can you attach pins to pins? Fuck, you don’t want the NSA to find out about this. Punk, you give yourself a hasty eyebrow pierce with the Fun Bus Tour 1999 pin and find you are suspended in two moments in time, the other being the body piercing and tattoo tent at Lollapalooza, 1995.
Scenes from an Ancient Egyptian Afterlife
And oh my god, it’s the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Imagine you are their trumpet. Feel the joyous breath of the universe enliven you. Feel the spittle of the universe. I think that was a chunk of anchovy there. You didn’t tell me about fish allergies beforehand so I can’t be held accountable.
R IV: Father? Wow! Geez, I didn’t think I’d run into you here.
STEVEN SPIELBERG
Rowdy Hall, East Hampton, NY The summer is slow for seeing the fames out and about in the city since everyone goes on a thing called vacation (what do you guys call it up there?) I did, however, see a super famous while in the Hamptons for my amazing girlfriend’s amazing art show. I figure he is super famous enough to be worth devoting this entire column to; this super famous dude was (and I assume still is) STEVEN SPIELBERG! We were grabbing some food at a place before the opening and I was sitting with my back to dude who made Jaws (which is awesome but then maybe ruined movies forever?) when I was informed that the dude who made Jaws (but I guess he made two really great Indiana Jones movies too; sorry, Temple of Doom kind of stinks and that last one does not actually exist) was sitting right behind me. I, of course, had to get personal confirmation so I walked into the bar part of the restaurant to pretend to look at the sports on TV so I could sweep by his table and get a good look (I CAN’T BELIEVE I’M GIVING AWAY ALL MY CELEB SPOTTING SECRETS). Much to my humiliation, Steven Spielberg totally busted me, giving me the “I know you are trying to confirm that I am a famous with your pathetic maneuver and I am not just a famous but a Super Famous, so enjoy it while you can, plebe.” look while all I could do was hang my head in shame rather than reply with a look that said, “Thank you for making Jaws and it is awesome to see you in a place where there could be a Jaws. But seriously dude, stop making Indiana Jones movies. Harrison Ford looks like an angry sack of old steaks and people who wear dumb hats don’t need any more encouragement.”

Ramses IV: Where am I? Ramses III: Ramses IV? Is that you? I can’t see through all of these stupid bandages.
R III: You were the one, weren’t you? To assassinate me. R IV: Oh, come on, father, don’t be silly. Everyone knows that you accidentally fell into the Nile at the hungry crocodile spot.
Transfer your consciousness to singer Dickey Barratt’s forehead muscle. Tense with joy until you remember the time you passed gas in the middle of your first communion mass. Fuck. Humiliating. Dammit dammit dammit my butt is a stupid idiot. Tony Miles never let you forget that moment - well, until he fell into that quarry in 1988. Haha. Oh fuck that is a terrible thought to have. You are so awful. Fuck fuck fuck fuck.
R III: I see. Well then, I just want you to know that the irritated hippopotamus in your bedroom was probably a mere coincidence.
KYLIE ALEXANDER
Now release. Breathe again. Chippers tries to lift you away to a field nearby the festival. But instead he smashes you into a dump truck. Instead of dying, you become part of it. Feel the burden of debris and rock in your back as you lurch forward. Cool, you have wheels. Feel them rotate in sync with the turn of the universe. But there is something squishy under your front left wheel. You have just run over a cat. Move a little forward and dump the stuff on it. No one will ever know what happened. They’ll just think the cat ran away and didn’t love them enough to come back. You’ve been dealing with too much today and maybe it’s time to cut this off I’m so sorry I’m so so so sorry.

I guess you can open your eyes all the way or you could close them all the way. Who cares. It’s not like anything will be different from before. Breathe, I guess? It’s what you were going to do anyway probs.
PERSPECTIVES by RYAN DOUGLASS and KEIRA HOROWITZ with guest advisor KATIE MCCARTHY (we had to fill a tiny amount of space)
Need advice?
Write to Keira and Ryan: tardyeagle@tardyeagle.com. Q: What is the top piece of advice you have for a person who is new to Boston? RYAN: Read the Boston Herald horoscope and dictate any and all decisions based upon the short two sentence synopsis from Howie Carr’s study of the stars. KEIRA: Look both ways when you cross the street. Trust no one. KATIE: If you are with one or more other people and you are standing on the sidewalk, leave space or move over so people can pass you. I can only assume it is different in other places, but sadly, you can’t walk straight through a human body in Boston (YET; hint, hint, MIT). This also applies to the guy I saw doing pushups in the middle of the Mass. Ave. bridge sidewalk. I wish I could have walked through you so you would have just been my hallucination instead of a real guy doing pushups in a busy urban walkway.

Don’t Be Caught Dead Without ‘Em!!!!!!!! Q: The dude in the apartment below mine leaves our shared front door open constantly. Telling him about the crime in our neighborhood did nothing. What the fuck? RYAN: Start dating his sister. Be good to her and stay loyal. Marry her. Then never tell him the bathroom in the chapel at your wedding doesn’t lock. If he doesn’t figure it out after that, then he’s probably too dull to hold onto a lease too long and he’ll be out of your hair in less than two months. KEIRA: Forgive my assumptions, but I’m picturing your neighbor as a horrible human who argues that keeping the door closed is “not cool, man.” He owns a collection of unusual intruments, none of which he can actually play. Your safety is worth more than this idiot. Tattle to the landlord if you have the kind of landlord that is on top of these things. It also occurs to me now that maybe you are just looking for support and not solutions. There I go again, problem-solving. This guy sounds awful. What the fuck-yes! How are you feeling? Whatever happened with that other thing you were telling me about? KATIE: Put something in front of his door. Like, nothing dangerous or gross; maybe some dolls or something. Ask him if someone keeps putting dolls in front of his door because it keeps happening to you and how weird is that. Maybe he’ll get creeped out and stop? Eh, worth a shot.

FEATURED CIN-EVENT MADE IN WEST | EAST GERMANY: WWI 9/15 - 10/1 @GOETHE You’ve probably heard that the First World War -- AKA the Great War, the War to End War, etc. -- had a big birthday this summer. Happy 100th, you old bloodbath, you! Scholars continue to debate the various timelines, the proper apportionment of blame, and the correct way to understand the conflict’s consequences. Anglos have long cast the German Reich as lead villain,

but revisionists contesting that narrative are legion. This month, the Goethe-Institut provides an opportunity to explore the sources and fallout of the 20th century’s gestalt-making shit-show as seen by German filmmakers. The six-film series - half West German, half East - focuses on psychology and society rather than strategy and tactics, and features works by Michael Haneke and Margarethe von Trotta, among others.

OUTRÉ MONTRÉAL (1966) @Brattle dir. VERA CHYTILOVÁ 9/18, 7:00PM, @PARAMOUNT Considering the relative proximity of our city to its cool francophone neighbor to the north, we would hope for more cultural exchange between the two. There is one development in particular that has piqued our attention in recent years: Double Negative, a fully-functioning, anti-establishment collective of experimental filmmakers in Montréal. Housed until recently in the apartment of one of its founders, Daïchi Saïto, with all the requisite analog filmmaking equipment, processing chemicals, and the like, the collective has finally decided to occupy an unused city building and to host
screenings in a nearby park. When the city tried to remove their materials, Double Negative persisted and re-occupied the space. Things have progressed to a kind of truce and now the goal is to legitimize the space. We cannot wait to hear about the latest developments and to see cutting edge work from collective members and their friends, on 9/18, when Daïchi Saïto and colleague Eduardo Menz will present a program of 16mm, 35mm, and video works at Emerson’s Bright Family Screening Room in the Paramount Center. Co-presented by Balagan Films, Bright Lights, and supported by the Québec Gov’t Office in Boston, this event is FREE to the public. - Mariya Nikiforova

PSYCHOTRONIC MOVIES IN OUR ZONE TRASH NIGHT PRESENTS: THEODORE REX (1995) dir. JONATHAN R. BETUEL 9/2, 8:00PM, $7 @BRATTLE Trash Night. The miscreants behind this monthly wallowing in cinematic filth were kind enough to answer some questions that I directed their way amid their many video research sessions in which they “prescreen out a lot of total horse-shit garbage trying to find the good stuff.” Better them than us, right? THEODORE REX is on tap for September, meeting Trash Night’s base criteria for the films they screen: “It is completely ridiculous, not entirely unwatchable, and not already well-loved.” Not sure that the love faucet will ever be turned on for this despicable 1995 Whoopi Goldberg dinosaur buddy cop turd, but you never know... and gawsh, I love Trash Night for making the case for it to be so! The gentlemen behind this monthly junk purveyor “aim to provide people with
a positive, alternative-reality oasis they can escape to mid-week.” I can vouch for their success at squeezing fun INTO the “NoCult/F-grade,” pants shit dreck they roll out every month. And they don’t just show horrible films for mocking/heckling in public (crowd interaction quite encouraged), they also insert their homemade absurdo-video collages in between doses of the film. It’s a chance to get wild and free within the confines of a respectable cinema. The Brattle even sells beer to aid you in this effort! I will leave you with some final advice from the Trash men to other weirdos & malcontents with extreme niche movie series aspirations: “Find something that interests you, start doing it, do not stop, and eventually unexpected and amazing things will begin to happen to your project.” THEODORE REX cost 33 million dollars and Whoopi had to be sued into making the movie. Trash Night. Yes. - Dan Shea

THEY LIVE (1988) dir. JOHN CARPENTER @COOLIDGE Before Shepard Fairey turned “OBEY” into a brand, John Carpenter used it as satire on ‘80s materialism in one of his most fun films. “Rowdy” Roddy Piper dons sunglasses which reveal hidden alien messages. Asses are kicked; bubble gum is chewed. Also Screens: 9/6. THE CONGRESS (2013) dir. ARI FOLMAN @BRATTLE Robin Wright plays herself in this film about a not too distant future where actors are completely digitized and taking special substances transforms the world into an animation. A kaleidoscope meditation on the dangers of perfect and total entertainment. Screens through 9/11. EXPEDITION TO THE END OF THE WORLD (2013) dir. DANIEL DENCIK @MFA A new semi-documentary from Denmark, the film follows a crew of scientists, philosophers, engineers, and artists aboard a schooner as they sift the unexplored and rapidly-melting glacial Greenlandic seas, meditating on human existence and extinction. Screens through 9/18. SPICE WORLD (1998) dir. BOB SPIERS @COOLIDGE If you grew up in the 90s, the words Scary, Sporty, Baby, Ginger, and Posh are much more than words -they’re your entire world. This Beatles-esque musical comedy proves the Spice Girls have their own hijinks. Also Screens: 9/13. AGE OF CANNIBALS (2014) dir. JOHANNES NABER @COOLIDGE It’s dog-eat-dog out there in corporatopia -- which is to say, where we live, right alongside Naber’s cynically corrupt trio of profit-hunters who occupy a series of luxury hotels in developing nations, creatively disrupting local economies and eating themselves alive.

FILMS AT THE GATE 9/12 - 9/14, 7:30pm @CGATE FilmsAtTheGate.org One of the greatest joys I’ve ever experienced was watching my first martial arts film. I think it was RUSH HOUR 2 (2001). Don’t laugh, read on. Since 2006, the Asian Community Development Corporation has presented FREE, outdoor screenings of Kung Fu and classic Chinese films – all just a minute from the iconic Chinatown Gate. This month, three films will screen nightly at 7:30pm or dusk, preceded by a martial arts demonstration at 6:30pm. First, it’s FEARLESS HYENA (1979), directed by and starring the lovable Jackie Chan, on 9/12. Next, on 9/13, catch THE WOMAN KNIGHT OF MIRROR LAKE (2011) – the biographical story of feminist revolutionary Qiu Jin. Finally, on 9/14, don’t miss COME DRINK WITH ME (1966) – actress Cheng Pei Pei kicks butt in one of the best films to come out of Hong Kong. Take the Orange Line to Chinatown, have a dope dinner, and catch a movie under the stars. - Ari Shvartsman

ANNIE HALL (1977) dir. WOODY ALLEN @BRATTLE How does a nerdy, neurotic, overly intellectual New Yorker attract so many women? Beats me. But, Woody Allen’s biographical romantic comedy is innovative and timeless in its thoughts on life, relationships, and love of the Big Apple’s uniqueness. Also Screens: 9/3. NORTE, THE END OF HISTORY (2014) dir. LAV DIAZ @MFA Crime, punishment, and their ramifications are the themes du jour in this lauded Filipino drama. When a man commits a murder and another is blamed, the tragedy courses through many lives – including the man who got away with it. Screens through 9/6.

CHINATOWN (1974) dir. ROMAN POLANSKI @BRATTLE
Forget it, Jake. It’s Chinatown. Jack Nicholson stars as a private detective who gets a whole lot more than he bargained for in this classic Polanski tale. Water and politics, murder and lies… What’s not to love? REPO MAN (1984) dir. ALEX COX @BRATTLE
JOE(2011) dir. WIL27 KILLER LIAM FRIEDKIN @HFA A clan of Texans scheme to have their mother killed in order to collect her insurance money. Unfortunately, a corrupt lawman you DO NOT want to trifle with makes things complicated. Director in-person. ARYANS (2014) 28 THE dir. MO ASUMANG @GOETHE
While surveying the history of Aryans and “Aryanism” -- both in actual fact and in the fanatical perversions of myth-hungry demagogues -- Asumang confronts notorious racists, interviews real-life, mild-mannered Aryans, and sets various records straight.
A young Emilio Estevez and a grizzled Harry Dean Stanton star in a bizarre mix of science fiction, comedy, and social commentary centered around a mysterious car trunk that vaporizes people. Awesome, right? LOS ANGELES PLAYS ITSELF (2004) dir. THOM ANDERSON @BRATTLE This legendary, long-unavailable film documents the history and character of the City of Angels, by way of clips from the hundreds of films that use it as a backdrop. Finally getting a proper release after a decade of legal purgatory! Also Screens: 9/15.
5 (1997) dir. CHRIS 18 LEVEL MARKER @BRATTLE Seventeen years after its initial release, yet somehow right on time, LEVEL 5 finally arrives stateside and proves to be a characteristically elusive and compelling meditation, semi-fictional in nature, on video games, virtuality, and the Battle of Okinawa. Screens through 9/28. ROCKS IN MY POCKETS 26 (2014) dir. SIGNE BAU-
MANE @MFA The first feature from this Latvian animator is a funny story about depression. Placing hand-drawn characters onto photos of paper-mâché sets, Baumane (who narrates and sounds strikingly like Isabella Rossellini) creates a world that would be at home in the Codex Seraphinianus. Screens through 10/2. WAYNE’S WORLD (1992) dir. PENELOPE SPHEERIS @COOLIDGE The movie that made us believe in DIY journalism and the spirit of rock n’ roll. Grow out your hair and tune in to the show: Wayne’s World! Wayne’s World! Party time! Excellent! Party on, Wayne. Party on, Garth. Party on, Boston. Also Screens: 9/27. SORCERER (1977) dir. Jamaica Plain A neighborhood of Boston. Whether you have lived in the Boston area for years, or whether you're just walking on these history-filled streets for the first time, there's much to do, and many neighborhoods to explore all around you. Fall is coming though, and it is no doubt followed by winter, so if you can appreciate wearing a single layer of clothing and the things that you can do in such while out of doors, then now is the time to act. Your opportunities are on the wane. With this in mind why not pay us a visit in Jamaica Plain? I say us, as I've lived in this neighborhood on the Orange Line for years, and while we have volunteers from all over Somerville, Brookline, Cambridge, and Boston, it is Jamaica Plain that birthed the Compass and the Boston Hassle more than any other. Grab a sandwich, or some Little Lad's popcorn @ one of the 2 City Feed markets, or Harvest Co-op markets in JP. Then order some ice cream, made with dairy (JP Licks), or not (FoMu), to maw on while you take in the open sight lines of Jamaica Pond, or the tree filled paradise of the Arnold Arboretum, or the urban parkland of Franklin Park. The Milky Way's pizza, Deep Thoughts for records, Video Underground for movie rentals (?!?), the Midway and many house venues all over for shows (grab a flier, ask a weird or a punk). And movies in the woods? Or so I hear... JP. Visit, and get sucked straight into the black hole of wonderful. - Dan Shea
