Compass #55 August 2014

Sustainably Moving Toward an Ideal Boston Corporate mainstream culture assaults all of our lives on a constant basis. To not be lulled into complacency by this cold, calculated data & product barrage is a victory unto itself. We here at the Compass (and our sister project Boston Hassle) want to and feel the need to reject this ugly widespread money grab. We aim to pry Boston area music and art culture from the hands of the corporate mainstream’s representatives and others who take OUR culture’s money, and give little or nothing back. Ours are the people who are distinctly Boston--the folks who buy the beers and food sold in these places of business; the folks that pay the owner’s salary. So many of us have responded by going underground. And rightfully so. This is what, if nothing else, unites us punks, weirds, rockers, electronic freaks, zinesters, and whatever you want to call your community of artists and musicians, or rabble rousers of whatever nature. Underground music and art venues will always exist. They are a natural outcrop of any

healthy artistic or philosophical ecosystem. What we are severely lacking here in Boston however, are much in the way of legitimate venues (or businesses, period) with agendas sympathetic to the various underground strategies that are out there. These places do exist, but we need far more of them!!! Start a band, or artistic endeavor, but don’t book yourself or your friends into unsupportive venues. Open a business that actively supports our shared culture. Start a collective, and find strength through numbers. Find out how the law works in your city and figure out how to create change by removing what restricts your culture. Politics and business are a quagmire, but they have mechanisms like everything else. The Compass and The Hassle are here to create positive social change through music and art, valuing freedom of artistic expression over material and financial gains. Join us in working to bring Boston closer to the free, and inspirational ideal that we know it can be for music, art, and thought. - Dan Shea

What’s Cooler Than Cold Brew Delivery? Nothing, Probs. Not everybody digs coffee, but for some of us the sweet, life-giving nectar is simply crucial to our daily function. If you’re in the latter category, then pay some dang attention to 1369 Coffeehouse. The Central Square beanjuice drippery is running their ICED COFFEE DELIVERY SERVICE all summer long--transporting GROWLERS (64oz.) of cold-brewed black gold via bicycle to near-any location in Cambridge, Somerville, or Back Bay for LE$$ than a weekful of daily purchases. Some science: cold brew coffee, having never been heated, is empirically proven to be smoother than smooth, colder than cold, coffeeier than coffee. Perhaps. The entirely volunteer-run organization that produces this newspaper, along with the comprehensive underground music and area nightlife blog Boston Hassle, AND organizes over a dozen DIY shows a month could actually use more creative, dedicated minds to make these great things happen. WHAT WE LACK: Artist Coordinator (managing and commissioning visual artists to get busy), Funds Wrangler (scheming to keep the newspaper from folding), Promo Pusher (spreading the word about upcoming shows), Street Team Lazer Beam (plan and carry out a campaign of turning people on, in the streets) and more. Rethink the phrase “in a tight spot.” The Compass aims to be in EVERY tight spot, every month. Could be a sweet retail shop, a nice cafe, a venue of some kind, any place the culture hungry freaks frequent. But wherever they be, to truly be all up in the right joints every month we need more hands on deck. Make it your thing, meet friendly folks, get to know the city and all that. It feels good to connect with people out there and this is one heck of a way. Do you live in JP? Allston? Cambridge? or Somerville? Hey me too! Let us unite our neighborhoods with free, independent press. - Sam Potrykus

Look up and look forward as Boston continues to establish itself as a Boss in public art innovation. Juxtaposing art with commercial and informational content via an 80-foot-tall LED multi-screen is ART ON THE MARQUEE, a public art project that screens multi-media work by local artists and students on a daily basis @the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. For the full enchilada, head to Southie on a Sunday from 8-9pm to watch the entire collection of art on loop or go to their website. BOSTON HASSLE BRIEFS Recent band profiles

from www.bostonhassle.com In School Praxis of Hate 7” Kill Test Records (2014) After an exciting demo last year, New York›s powerful hardcore luminaries IN SCHOOL have returned with this absolutely essential new 7». They take their name from a Die Kreuzen song but, though you can hear the influence of that band›s off-kilter, chaotic rhythms and esoteric guitar work, In School are a bit more straightforward and grounded due to the frontwoman BIDI CHOUDHURY›s gruff and furious vocals. All six of these tracks are burly, pounding anthems with some truly great moments; check the more melodic end to the already extremely catchy «Conquest» or the tumbling rhythm of «Knocked Out.» «Apocryphal Scum» is another high point, with its rollicking down beat and Choudhury›s wordy, spat-out and passionate vocals. In School›s music is definitively rooted in hardcore, but something about their sound is still hard to pin down; they seem to be drawing from a large body of influences which makes each of these six songs sound distinct and gives this 7» great replay value. So pick it up today from Kill Test Records. - Greg Witz

Indian Twin s/t self released (2014) It’s hard to believe from the five hyper-retro songs on Indian Twin’s self-titled EP that this band is just getting their start. Using the formula of jangly pop songs from the 50’s and 60’s, the band made a handful of sunny songs that have the spirit and energy of the expert musicians that they are inspired by. Don’t let that neat production fool you, though. INDIAN TWIN still have a bit of ruggedness, putting some garage rock grunge into their pop songs. That comes out in the guitar, which mixes a jingling old-fashioned style with a fuzzier, punk sound. The vocals by SOUBHIK BARARI play with the same balancing act, to some extent mimicking the distinctive vocal styles of vintage sounding music, but at time reaching points that are more growling and intense. Those vocal moments that are a little rougher give the music a contemporary edge, while the songs remain lined with retro touches, and there are still old-fashioned “oohing” vocal harmonies set behind. It works, and the band has managed to piece together a distinctive sound by delving into the 60’s rock and pop history books. Sometimes the bands that are unafraid to take inspiration from what has already been done end up creating the most unique and new sounds. Throw in charming lyrics about love and carnivals and other colorful subjects, and the band is creates some seriously crafty pop songs. Surfy, bluesy and jangly, hopefully this album is just the first minutes of fun retro sounds to come from Indian Twin. - Mary Kate McGrath

Future Spa ZZZZZ La Parca (2014) Future Spa is the title of a 1979 pinball machine manufactured by Bally, notable for being their first machine to feature continuous background noise during play. This cutting edge ambiance consisted of your standard arsenal of early arcade era blips, bloops and pew pew laser cries. FUTURE SPA also happens to be the name of a Somerville based garage punk group, notable for their abrupt songs that tend to resemble amphetamine fever dreams. This Future Spa may not be the first of their kind, nor their namesake, but their brand of continuous background noise is sure to leave a much stronger impression on you than the pinball sci-fi fodder from 35 years ago. ZZZZZ is essentially the cassette release of 2013’s My Aunt Brian, with a few track-list alterations, courtesy of local label LA PARCA. Ripping through 8 tracks in roughly 15 minutes, the bulk of this album clocks in well over the speed limit and well below common fidelity standards. Laden with fuzz fucked pounders like “My Aunt Brian”, “Knowage” and “Turn on the Action”, ZZZZZ regularly evokes the sensation of recklessly careening down a straightaway on a bike without brakes, the peripheral too blurry to decipher, the headrush too heavy to form forethought. The largest outlier comes in the form of “Sonic Youth,” an appropriately titled instrumental that harbors a surprisingly spry guitar hook and would fit right at home as a Goo demo. - JP Galeotalanza

Palberta/(New England) Patriots Special Worship split LP Feeding Tube Records (2014) New York’s PALBERTA unveiled their deconstructionist post-punk last year with the abrasive and freewheeling “My Pal Berta,” covering a lot of sonic ground and showcasing an insular and experimental unit dabbling in everything from US Maple‘s fractured anti-rock to the eccentric pop leanings of Deerhoof and the mutant punk-funk of James Chance. Meanwhile, Boston’s own (NEW ENGLAND) PATRIOTS have been terrorizing our little town from the ashes of the inimitable ARVID NOE with manic prog-inflected noise-punk, alternately rocking and mystifying audiences. Their split release SPECIAL WORSHIP, out now on Northampton MA’s FEEDING TUBE RECORDS, is a fine introduction to each band’s brand of freak-punk. Palberta’s bizarre humor and creative spirit is evident from their side of the split, which alternates between supershort outbursts and more intricate songs. Highlight “Susan” starts off with a gloomy, ominous bassline punctuated by short stabs of atonal guitar that get more twisted as the song moves along. The song reflects the half-confident/ half-uncertain mantra of “When I go, I won’t be scared” as it alternates between tranquility and paranoia in equal measure. (New England) Patriots’ side of the split is covered in fuzz, feedback, snaky guitar leads, and the paranoid effected vocals of singer COLBY, all culminating in a disjointed and abrasive, almost Beefheartian vibe. The pairing of these two experimental punk groups couldn’t be more fitting, as they both display a playful idiosyncratic mentality to their noise-making and a tendency for violent outbursts and free-spirited energy. - Chris Villon

Moth Cock Twofer Tuesday Hausu Mountain (2014) MOTH COCK, the Kent, Ohio based electroacoustic duo of DOUG GENT and PAT MODUNGO, have been bringing their oblique, richly textured improvisations on tour throughout the Midwest and Northeast for a few years now, tickling and pleasing the eardrums of fans of underground noise, freejazz and electronic rhythmic music alike along the way. This tape, released on the Chicago based label HAUSU MOUNTAIN is a ripe new document of the band’s electronic experiments, and provides a good sense of what the band’s recent live shows might

STORY HI

Particulars s/t EP self released (2014) Hypnotically moving and shaking its limbs as it emerges from the punk rock & experimental music rabbit hole that is Boston’s underground music scene of today, PARTICULARS is, in a way, the ultimate kind of band when viewed in the context of the world of the Boston Hassle. In this land of Hassle, genre is never the destination, rather simply a marker along the road of life where music is digested and made sense of (perhaps). Particulars are a band that no genre tag is going to be appropriate for. Drummer/ composer NICK NEUBERG has brought this collection of purely heady music experimentalists together, and it is him then that we can thank for this new band. Challenging music does not often get this groove oriented, or for that matter, fun. On “Knock Knock,» wisps of Asmus Tietchens float through the air. Saxophones get involved. A guy walks by and shouts something as an unsettling feeling sinks in. Sax and synth trade barbs. An island vibe takes us out, McSHANE’s sax there to remind us that we have not switched channels (bandcamp sites). This song uses a pile of different synth sounds (some skweee vibes) and it all works. You might fall in love with this band and this EP if you are an adventurous listener and you’ve found your way here. EP is only on bandcamp now, but if there is any righteousness left in this multiverse then that won’t be the end of the tale. In case you can’t tell, I think that this is a really wonderful album. - Dan Shea

be like. During a Moth Cock set, Modungo characteristically applies live processing through effects and loop-pedals to Gent’s clarinet playing and his own trumpet playing, which results in the broken and oddly groovy sonic zones that the group is known for. The two sidelong improvisations that grace this tape certainly don’t stray from that formula. Some of the angular beats that drop in during the madness really spice things up, and kind of seem like the weird hip-hop that might fuel

the dance-floors of alien societies. This tape for the most part is pretty rhythmic, but there are some “ambient” moments (particularly on the second side) that are kind of, um, beautiful. Some samples make appearances on the second side as well, and this I think might be new territory for these guys but either way, both the sounds and the playing on this recording are really good. As a whole, this is an experience that really sets a vibe and paints a landscape, if you know what I mean. Listen in, trip hard. - Nick Neuburg

In 1765 British Parliament passed the Stamp Act imposing a tax on all printed materials produced in the 13 Colonies, including newspapers, permits and legal documents. Colonists considered the tax a form of censorship and oppression that limited free expression, trade and justice to only those who could afford the tax. On August 14 1765 the first public protest of the Stamp Act occurred in Boston at what is now the corner of Washington and Essex Streets. There stood a tall and broad elm tree from which the protesters hung an effigy of local Stamp Officer Andrew Oliver and a British cavalry boot painted as a grimacing devil, within which was a scroll labeled “Stamp Act.”

Following the protest an organized mob ransacked Oliver’s house, threatened his life and forced him to resign his position publicly at the same tree, effectively making the Stamp Act unenforceable. With this victory the tree was heralded as the Liberty Tree, and became the primary outdoor public meeting place and site for protests and broadsides in the years leading to revolution. During the British occupation and siege of Boston in 1775 a group of Loyalists led by Job Williams cut down the Liberty Tree for firewood to signify the Revolution’s failure. Nevertheless, the symbol of Liberty endured. Trees in cities and towns throughout the Colonies were given Liberty Tree status and functioned as rallying points for organized rebellion. Liberty Tree emblems adorned flags at Revolutionary battles and the remaining stump became known as the Liberty Stump. In 1872 a banquet hall was built at the site of the Liberty Tree. Embedded into the third story Washington Street façade of this building, now the Registry of Motor Vehicles above the Chinatown T-stop, is an impressive painted bas-relief carving of the Liberty Tree with the text: Sons of Liberty 1766; Independence of their Country 1776. PERSPECTIVES

Q: My dad is turning 50 and I want to throw him an amazing party. How can I make sure it’s the best party ever? KEIRA: Accept that “amazing party” means something different to you and your Dad. When I was in high school, my Mom went to California to visit her sister during the week of my Dad’s birthday. She left me money and told me to take him somewhere nice, “his choice.” He requested Taco Bell and Carvel. I was horrified and convinced myself I had failed at birthdays. But we didn’t have to wait for a table, nobody had to dress up and everything was delicious. Later we went home to watch the Knicks-Rockets play game 5 of the NBA Finals, but instead were transfixed by a slow-speed Bronco chase (Google it, kids). That night was my Dad’s “amazing party.” He still talks about it. RYAN: Cocaine, depression, and Fiona Apple. 

6. Opened a public bathroom door on an elderly man who was mid squat, exposing him to the crowded lobby during intermission at a Baroque music concert. To this day, I face serious repercussions from my actions. I’ve paid my own rent and bills for ten years now and it haunts me every night as I edge into a fitful sleep. As does the harmonica that no one will buy at any yard sale I’ve ever had. Doing drugs affects not only you, but whoever pays your cell phone bill and probably your roommate when you come out of your room and act all weird but you’re just getting some cereal what’s up. So learn from my mistakes. One wrong bite of a mushroom and you could wake up like me, a woman in her late twenties who isn’t even in PR or graduate school. Shit is fucked.  *a vacation in Key West, a park, scattered apartments in Cambridge

STARS AMONG ME by TD SIDELL

HEY BACKWATERERS, In case you forgot, TD Sidell moved to NEW YORK CITY, and therefore has seen many celebrities. He figured that you guys were sick of trading stories about seeing Ric Ocasek tweeting or Kevin Lemanowicz getting his teeth whitened or whatever and that he would ENRICH YOUR LIVES with some tales of all the amazing celebs he got to see with his own eyes RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIS FACE. This list should appear monthly or until all celebrities leave New York.

DASCHA POLANCO

Tick Tock Diner, Midtown This is the woman who plays Dayanara (the preggo lady) on Orange is the New Black and she was totally eating by herself at a super crappy diner right by Penn Station. There are probably a lot of good reasons why she could have been doing this; there are a lot of studios around there or maybe she just wanted to not eat in Penn Station before boarding a train. But I chose to believe that she was there doing a fame test (kind of like when Sally Field goes to the shopping mall in Soapdish. What? You don’t remember Soapdish? How you could you forget he screwball antics between Field and an in-tip-top-form Kevin Kline? Or the strange sexual chemistry of Cathy Moriarty and a pre-rehab Robert Downey Jr.? HOW COULD YOU FORGET THE FINEST PERFORMANCE OF ELISABETH SHUE’S CAREER? You guys are monsters). Anyway, if you’re going to do one of those, I suppose a diner close to major transportation hub is as prime a spot as you can pick. There were many backpacked youths and fannypacked adults picking at lifeless fries. Not a one approached Dascha’s table though. Sorry girl. Diner people don’t approach unless you’re network.

SAM SMITH

The Place I Work, Williamsburg This dude is apparently super super famous now. I had to be informed of his celebrity by a customer who went all goo-goo eyed when she recognized him. I guess he’s a singer person from England? All I know is after I figured out what he sings, it’s the only thing I hear in Duane Reades across the city.

ELEANOR FRIEDBERGER A Bar, Williamsburg

Eleanor Friedberger is not super famous but I recognized her immediately. She is way better without her annoying brother and very very pretty, even as she is drinking a maybe unwanted shot of Mezcal. 

POSTMORTEM: A MIDNITE EXAMINATION OF THE MODERN ZOMBIE Now - 8/30 @COOLIDGE While the zombie craze refuses to die, there’s no denying that it’s contributed some of the scariest, funniest, and most balls-out insane genre films of the past fifty years. Enter the fine folks at the Coolidge, who are serving up tasty 35mm prints of undead masterpieces all August long. First up is Lucio Fulci’s gross-out classic ZOMBIE (8/1 & 8/2), which features the first-ever zombie-vs-shark fight (as well as cinema’s unluckiest eyeball). Next is Danny Boyle’s 28 DAYS LATER.. (8/8 & 8/9), which reinvigorated the genre with its track-star ghouls. RE-ANIMATOR (8/15 & 8/16) is an ‘80s “splatstick” comedy classic, which provides a sickeningly literal interpretation of “getting head.” No introduction is necessary for George Romero’s NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (8/22 & 8/23), the 1968 film that birthed the entire genre. The series closes with SHAUN OF THE DEAD (8/29 & 8/30), Edgar Wright’s zom-romcom blockbuster. Don’t get bit! - Oscar Goff Buñuel’s UN CHIEN ANDALOU (1929), the after midnight (or before) treats of LATE NITE CINEMA ROLL are proving to be the best follow-ups to a night of loose abandonment in town. Next up is Hitchocock meets Nietzche in this movie based on a play, based on a true story. ROPE (1948) screens as the afterparty to the show @the House that CDRs Built on Thursday, 8/7. - Ari Shvartsman

DAISIES (1966) @Brattle dir. VERA CHYTILOVÁ 8/27 - 5:30pm & 9:30pm, @BRATTLE DAISIES, the most well-known film of the late Věra Chytilová (who died this past March), is an uncompromising and radical manifesto scrawled in broad technicolor strokes and heavily bound in absurdity and wry humor. The film follows two cartoonishly juvenile and self-absorbed heroines who decide that, because the world is becoming “spoiled,” they should too. What ensues is a loosely connected series of episodes in which they taunt older

male suitors, slice up a variety of phallic symbols with scissors, and stuff their faces with nearly everything they can find. The dedication superimposed over aerial footage of bombed-out buildings at the end of the film – “to those who get upset only over a stomped-upon bed of lettuce” – is a veritable call to arms. But the film is as radical in it’s visual style as it is philosophically, utilizing a number of experimental techniques to keep the viewer alert, compounding with the fun of the chaotic revelry. - Stefan Grabowski

PSYCHOTRONIC MOVIES IN OUR ZONE SORCERER (1977) dir. WILLIAM FRIEDKIN 8/8 & 8/10 @COOLIDGE First of all, if you haven’t seen Henri-Georges Clouzot’s WAGES OF FEAR (1953), then go ahead and get that done pronto. Leave it to William Friedkin to remake* the great French psychotronic film director’s most well known movie, AND to pull it off (list the great film remakes on both hands... bet you can’t make use of all of your fingers). Friedkin is one of America’s great film mavericks. Famous for films like THE FRENCH CONNECTION (1971) and THE EXORCIST (1973); dig a little deeper into his oeuvre and you come upon films like CRUISING (1980), and SORCERER, which are just as gritty, and equally as good as the aforementioned classics. I was lucky enough to catch a screening of SORCERER several years back @HFA. Friedkin appeared in person and engaged the audience in one of the most meandering, entertaining, and wonderful “director

talks” that I have ever to witness. He spoke of SORCERER, its soundtrack composer’s Tangerine Dream, and essentially had to be pulled from the podium to end the talk. The man is a rare artist. The film follows four truck drivers transporting highly volatile explosives through 200 miles of South American jungle. Like its filmic predecessor, it is insanely tense. Unlike its predecessor, however, it is filmed in violent (at times hallucinatory) color, and delves more deeply into the existential crisis of its protagonist (Roy Scheider in his finest role outside of JAWS (1975). Harrowing and wild, psychedelic and heart pounding, SORCERER easily deserves a seat at the table with the likes of STALKER (1979), APOCALYPSE NOW (1979), AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD (1977), and FITZCARRALDO (1982). Digitally restored. * For the record Friedkin claims that this film is not a remake, but rather a separate adaptation of the source novel, LE SALAIRE DE LA PEUR. -Dan Shea

SCARLET STREET (1945) dir. FRITZ LANG @HFA Luckily for us, Lang fled to Hollywood to escape fascism. Now we have this tense noir, which replaces the standard gangsters and detectives with a lonely, aging man who is exploited by a mistress and her boyfriend till he snaps.

28 DAYS LATER (2002) dir. DANNY BOYLE @ 20 COOLIDGE Imagine waking up in a hospital bed and discovering that everyone you have ever known and loved has been turned into a zombie. Not just any zombie, though – a FAST zombie. Such is life in this tense masterpiece. Also screens on 8/9.

PAPRIKA (2006) dir. SATOSHI KON @BRATTLE If you thought INCEPTION was mind bending, this surreal animated masterpiece from Japan about exploring the sleeping subconscious will leave you floored with its kaleidoscopic visuals, exotic soundtrack, and sci-fi/meta narrative. Sweet dreams.

STREET FIGHTER (1994) dir. DIR. STEVEN E. DE SOUZA @ C-HARRIS-PARK What’s better than a great movie under the stars? A terrible movie under the stars! Okay, maybe not. Nevertheless, James Mullan and Matt Kona screen this notorious flop at Somerville’s Chuckie Harris Park. Free popcorn and soda – heckling encouraged! HANNA (2011) dir. JOE WRIGHT @BRATTLE

CLOSED CURTAIN (2013) dir. JAFAR PANAHI & KAMBUZIA PARTOVI @MFA This film examines suicidal thought in the surrealistic story of a man struggling with depression by the Caspian Sea. The latest out of the Iranian New Wave film movement, shot in secret by acclaimed filmmakers Partovi and Panahi, the latter suffering from depression during production. Also screens on 8/15, 8/16, 8/21 - 8/24.

GHOST WORLD (2001) dir. TERRY ZWIGOFF @ BRATTLE The story of quirky people growing up in the sterile world of small town America is a timeless one, and GHOST WORLD captures those suburban blues just right. Equal parts angst and comedy, and maybe all too relatable for some. EXPOSED (2014) dir. BETH B @BRATTLE Underground and alternative Burlesque takes center stage in this iconic No Wave filmmaker’s titillating new documentary, which profiles eight men and women who brazenly bare all to challenge “normal” notions of body, gender, and sexuality.

Lynch’s debut is one of cinema’s greatest nightmares, filled with deformed babies, industrial drone, parental anxieties, and man-made chickens. If you’ve never seen it in a late-night theater filled with like-minded weirdos, you’ve never really seen it. Go now!

28 MANAKAMANA (2013) dir.

STEPHANIE SPRAY @BRATTLE An immaculately framed mystery set in feudal Japan, this period piece is a slow burn that offers a scathing indictment of samurai social norms. Let’s just say “honor among thieves” is a phrase that doesn’t just apply to criminals.

14 THE DOUBLE (2013) dir.

RICHARD AYOADE @ BRATTLE Fully demonstrating his acting chops in this psychological comedy from Dostoyevsky that looks like it was made by Kafka, mild-mannered Simon (Eisenberg) is ignored by everyone. When his charismatic doppelganger appears things get even worse.

Devastated by the sudden death of his girlfriend Beth, Zach is an emotional wreck. When Beth mysteriously returns from the grave, Zach sees it as a second chance to amend his past pitfalls in love... zombie or not... Also Screens: 8/16 - 8/18.

29 CONTEMPT (1963) dir.

JEAN-LUC GODARD@HFA The endless hell of a bad breakup is on full display in Jean-Luc’s personal account of artistry versus commercialism in the film industry. Starring an over the top Jack Palance, Fritz Lang as himself, and Brigitte Bardot’s derriere.

THE PARALLAX VIEW (1974) @BRATTLE dir. ALAN J. PAKULA The middle film in Warren Beatty’s hat-trick of “New Hollywood” classics from the first half of the ‘70s is perhaps best known now for providing Slavoj Žižek with a book title. A stillheady admixture of potent paranoias, it’ll paint you into a corner you’d have sworn was a door.

SOMERVILLE COMMUNITY GROWING CENTER Sometimes it seems like summer is almost over as soon as it gets here. Why not check out some great outdoor spaces nearby while we’re right in the middle of it? There’s nothing wrong with spending your days by Jamaica Pond, the Charles River or any of the jah-mazing beaches of the North and South Shores respectively, but for this article, I’ve chosen a spot that is truly a hidden gem in our own backyard. The Community Growing Center is nestled into the corner of Summer Street and Vinal Avenue, just a short walk from Union Square in Somerville. This unique urban oasis is a welcome green space in the often dense and industrial surrounding areas. After the junior high school that previously occupied the space was torn down, the neighboring community came together, uniting local artists, activists, and city officials to take part in a planning process that would eventually result in one of most beautiful outdoor spaces in the Boston area. The garden itself is a peaceful harmonious place to relax in the midst of the Beantown buzz. With terraced beds of herbs, flowers and vegetables on a sloping hillside, and a gorgeous miniature amphitheater, you can spend hours on end connecting with your natural self and other like-minded folks. The garden is open to the public every Saturday from 9 a.m.-12 p.m., or get involved as a volunteer for unlimited access! The Growing Center also hosts a litany of seasonal programming, including educational workshops and musical performances. - Scott Mizrachi
