Principal’s Update

This month, I’d like start with some good news. On 25 March, SFC announced the long-awaited 2026-27 indicative funding allocations for the college sector.

As a result of the increases in the Scottish government budget, every college has seen an increase in funding. In our case this equates to an 8.4% increase in revenue funding via our teaching grant. While we still have

a lot of work to do, this will go a long way to reversing our forecast deficit for the upcoming year and will enable us to stabilise our finances in the short to medium term. In the longer term and, in order to reach a sustainable position, we will continue to seek additional Credit funding to meet the needs of our learners and businesses.

Speaking of businesses, I was really pleased to attend the Borders Business Expo at Peebles Hydro last month, where our stand was manned by Dale Clancy and Emma Walsh. The Expo showcased the fantastic talent in the Borders, both at established businesses and in our young entrepreneurs. We

look forward to continuing to build our relationships with businesses and the Chamber of Commerce.

February also saw us welcome Ben McPherson MSP, Minister for Higher and Further Education, to the College. The Minister was hugely impressed by the range of learning being delivered at our College and in our ambitious plans for the future.

Lastly, for those taking time off over Easter, please enjoy yourselves and I look forward to seeing you again as return for the summer term.

Minister for Higher and Further Education Visits College

Borders College was delighted to recently welcome the Minister for Higher and Further Education, Ben Macpherson, to its Scottish Borders Campus. The visit recognised the vital role the College plays as an anchor institution for regional development, supporting skills, innovation and

Avoiding Data Breaches - Change to the Email Address Book

You must take care of the personal data you use or have access to. Borders College has technology in place to protect systems as well as policies and mandatory training. However, sometimes mistakes are made, and this can lead to a ‘Personal Data Breach’ “A breach of security leading to the accidental or unlawful destruction, loss, alteration, unauthorised disclosure of, or access to, personal data transmitted, stored or otherwise processed.”

One of the most common causes of a Personal Data Breach is sending an email to an incorrect recipient. This is usually because the wrong email address is selected in the address list, or from the suggested contact list that appears when you start to type in an email address. To help avoid mistakes from happening, the email address list has been updated to include a ‘College Staff’ only address list.

Now when you open the address list by selecting the ‘To’, ‘Cc’ or ‘Bcc’ in a new email: You can select ‘College Staff’ from the address book drop down:

Beth Takes on Triple Crown Cycle for Doddie’s Charity

Borders College procurement officer Beth McCluskey recently participated in the renowned My Name’5 Doddie Triple Crown cycle ride, travelling from Melrose to Dublin to raise vital funds in the fight against motor neurone disease (MND) as part of a small local group of 8 cyclists (the Tweed Sprocketeers)

Beth and the Tweed Sprocketeers joined a number of high-profile participants, including Doddie Weir’s wife, Kathy Weir, to complete the demanding 750-mile route, cycling close to 220 miles per day from Melrose to Dublin.

Reflecting on the experience, Beth said:

“It was tough going with the weather playing havoc with our plans, especially in Wales, where the last section was deemed too dangerous to continue riding.

“Sleep was rationed with 5 am starts and sleeping on clubroom floors, but we knew that this aspect was going to be difficult.

“It was way more than just a bike challenge; it was about doing something for those who face struggles far

tougher than anything we can imagine.

“We had fabulous support from rugby clubs all along the route who supplied moral support in buckets served with tea and endless delicious food”

The fundraising campaign has already raised more than £1.5 million in total.

Kathy Weir commented: “Doddie would be so proud of everyone who continues to get behind the cause. The money that has been raised is just incredible and shows how many people are still determined to make a difference.”

Donations can still be made

No Holiday on Centre Parcs Visit

It was a highly productive and inspiring day for colleagues from Borders College, alongside partners from Scottish Borders Council and South of Scotland Enterprise, as they came together to strengthen collaboration and explore future opportunities.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity to gain deeper insight into the wide range of roles and responsibilities available at Center Parcs UK & Ireland. From environmental conservation initiatives, including on-site beekeeping and biodiversity efforts, through to the design, development and management of premium accommodation such as the renowned Treehouses, the day highlighted the diversity of career pathways within the organisation.

For Borders College, the experience reinforced the importance of strong industry partnerships in shaping relevant skills provision and creating meaningful progression routes for learners. By engaging directly with employers and regional stakeholders, the College continues to ensure that its curriculum aligns closely with emerging

workforce needs across the South of Scotland. There was a strong sense of shared purpose throughout the day, with enthusiasm, collaboration and clear forward momentum evident among all partners. As preparations continue for the opening of the new Scottish village, Borders College looks forward to supporting this exciting development through skills, training and talent pipelines that will benefit both learners and the wider regional economy.

This collaboration represents a significant step forward in building a skilled workforce that can contribute to the long-term success of this major investment in the region.

Stress Awareness Month

March 2026

April is Stress Awareness Month with the theme of #BeTheChange, encouraging individuals to build their confidence in managing stress.

Stress affects everyone, but the good news is that you have the power to make a difference. Change starts with small, confident steps; your actions influence your wellbeing and those around you. By believing in your ability to manage stress, you can adopt positive coping strategies and influence a healthier environment.

When we believe we can influence our situation, stress becomes something we manage, not something that manages us.

Quick actions you can take today:

Action: Set one small achievable goal for your day. Example: Instead of “finish all my work,” aim for “complete the first report and send it by noon.”

Action: Share a stress management tip with a friend or colleague.

Example: Suggest taking a short walk together at lunch or using a wellbeing app like Sorted.

Action: Reflect on past successes to boost confidence before a challenging task.

Example: Recall a time you successfully led a meeting or handled a tight deadline, remind yourself, “I’ve done this before, I can do it again.”

Action: Try a 5-minute mindfulness or breathing exercise. Example: Close your eyes, inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 6 Repeat for five minutes to calm your mind

Check out the resources we have added below to find more ways to help you manage stress.
