Menopause And Breast Cancer Risk Menopause occurs when a woman’s reproductive cycle is over & she can no longer produce offspring. For many women, menopause occurs around age 50. While menopause itself is not a risk for breast or other cancers, it’s important to know that some symptom treatments & other factors can increase the risk for cancer among menopausal women. The North American Menopause Society says that a woman going through perimenopause or menopause may experience various symptoms, which can range from hair loss to food cravings to hot flashes. The National Institutes of Health indicates some women undergo combined hormone therapy, also called hormone replacement therapy, or HRT, to help relieve menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes & osteoporosis. This therapy replaces estrogen & progestin, which diminish in a woman’s body after menopause sets in. However, NIH’s Women’s Health Initiative Study has found that women undergoing HRT have a higher risk of breast cancer, among other conditions. WebMD says evidence suggests that the longer a woman is exposed to female hormones, whether it’s those made by the body, taken as a drug or delivered by a patch, the more likely she is to develop breast cancer. That means that HRT can increase breast cancer risk & also indicates that the longer a woman remains fertile the greater her risk for certain cancers. Females who began menstruating before age 12 or entered menopause after age 55 will have had many ovulations. This increases the risk of uterine, breast & ovarian cancers, states the American Society of Clinical Oncology. It also may impact a woman’s chances of developing endometrial cancer. Gaining weight after menopause can also increase a woman’s risk of breast cancer, states the MD Anderson Cancer Center. Females who want to lower their risk for various cancers are urged to eat healthy diets, quit smoking & maintain healthy body weights.

Unemployment isn’t easy for anyone, regardless of your age. But unemployed men & women over 50 may find it especially difficult to find work. Whether it’s a byproduct of age-related discrimination or any of a host of additional variables, jobless older workers often struggle to find work. Unemployed men & women over 50 who are struggling to find work can consider the following strategies: • Revisit your résumé. Update your résumé to reflect your most recent professional experience. You may need to trim some of the fat in regard to your work life 10 or more years ago. Today’s hiring managers may only be concerned with recent experience that illustrates skillsets that are relevant to today’s jobs. • Embrace 21st century job hunting. Finding a job now is unlike job hunting in decades prior, and wholly different from how men & women over 50 looked for jobs upon beginning their professional lives. Networking can mean the difference between unemployment & landing a job. Go to job fairs attended by hiring managers & join professional organizations that host events where professionals in your field can gather. • Turn your age into a positive. Accept the likelihood that new managers and/or hiring managers will be younger. When interviewing for a job, make an effort to showcase your enthusiasm about working with & learning from younger colleagues, while also noting your desire to commit long-term to a company. Some hiring managers may surprise older applicants, viewing them as potentially more reliable than younger workers simply looking to gain some experience in a particular industry before moving on to the next opportunity. • Make use of your existing down time. Enrolling in online courses can give prospective employers the impression that applicants over 50 are both tech-savvy & willing to learn new things. Each of those things can help you overcome any unjustified, tech-related stigmas that hiring managers may attach to older job candidates.

How Men Can Benefit From Yoga The popularity of yoga has grown considerably in the 21st century. But while women have embraced yoga en masse, men have been more hesitant to do so. A 2012 survey from Yoga Journal found that, among the 20 million yoga practitioners in the United States, only 18% were men. While those figures might have risen in recent years, many classes remain overwhelmingly female. That’s unfortunate for men, who could benefit from practicing yoga in myriad ways. • Yoga can protect against muscle imbalances. Yoga requires various muscle groups to work together to perform certain exercises. This can reduce the risk of muscle imbalances that can develop when men design workout routines that target specific muscle groups • Yoga can improve flexibility. When performed correctly, various yoga exercises improve flexibility. For example, the big toe pose can help men & women lengthen & strengthen their hamstrings, while the downward facing dog pose stretches various areas of the body, including the shoulders, calves & arches. • Yoga can improve stamina. In 2005, researchers at the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse, found that the regular practice of Hatha yoga provided a significant boost to chest & abdominal strength & endurance. Such improved stamina can have a trickle-down effect on men who practice yoga & also adhere to strength training regimens and/or participate in sports. • Yoga can help men maintain healthy weights. The Harvard Medical School notes that researchers discovered that people who practiced yoga for at least 30 minutes once a week for at least four years gained less weight during middle adulthood than those who did not. Additional research found people who practiced yoga were more mindful eaters than those who did not, making them less likely to overeat. Fewer men than women may practice yoga, but that does not mean men cannot benefit just as much from embracing this ancient practice. Hatha Yoga is offered by the Belvidere Park District at both a beginner and intermediate/advanced level. Beginning Yoga on Thursdays, 5:15-6:15 PM with the next session starting November 1st & Intermediate/Advanced on Tuesdays, 6:15-7:30 PM with the next session starting October 30th. For more info call 815-547-9557. Both classes are at Rivers Edge Rec Center and instructed by Jeff Leaich.

As we age, “hitting the gym” can become a little more daunting & sometimes our bodies just won’t let us do what we used to be able to do. Don’t worry; there is an alternative. Water aerobics is a great way to stay active, no matter your age, but especially as “normal” gym equipment becomes more difficult to use. Water aerobics offers many benefits, such as: Providing low impact to joints; Burning calories; Due to the combination of strength & cardio, mixed with water resistance, ensuring that you are getting a total body workout; Increasing muscle strength & flexibility; Building endurance; Relieving stress & anxiety; Allowing you the opportunity to network with great friends who share like-minded wellness goals. According to Livestrong, “when exercising in water you work against 12 times the resistance of air. Simply kicking & cupping the water helps contribute to muscle development which means a higher metabolism & healthy body.” Treading water vigorously can burn up to 11 calories per minute which is equal to running a 6 miles per hour (source: Fitness Magazine). Water is a great activity for all but especially beneficial to those who have arthritis, spinal issues, foot leg & knee conditions. You don’t have to worry about falling & hurting yourself. Can’t swim? No worries! Most aquatics classes take place in the shallow end. Are you more of a loner & not a class person? Try aqua jogging, water walking, and/or kickboarding. Any sort of movement in the water will begin to burn calories. As with any exercise, make sure you take time for a warm up & cool down period with stretching either in or out of the water. Warming up allows your body to get blood flowing to your muscles for a maximum workout & to help prevent injury. Cooling down is necessary in order to bring your heart rate down & let your body acclimate to relaxation mode. Before you begin any new workout, please consult your doctor to ensure that your wellness choice is a good fit for your lifestyle. Always remember to work at your own pace. Listen to your body & modify the workout to your ability. It is not worth overdoing an exercise & putting your body at risk. The Belvidere Family YMCA offers a variety of adult aquatic aerobic classes targeted towards different activity levels & needs. Adult aquatic classes are free of charge for members or offered at a nominal fee to the general public. The Y offers memberships, accepts Silver Sneakers & has affordable scholarship options available. For more information on the classes, schedules or general Y information: Stop in, give us a call at 815-547-5307, email us at info@belviderefamilyymca.org or visit www.belviderefamilyymca.org.

Saving money is always hard, but you CAN make changes that help. Here are five tips to make it easier. EAT IN: Fast food & restaurant portions are not always healthy. Have a friend over to make the meal prep more enjoyable. TIME TOGETHER IS THE BEST GIFT: Make memories with those you love for their birthday, holidays or a special day. A picnic in the park, strolling a bike path or catching a matinee is a great treat.

BUY HIGHER QUALITY: It might cost more upfront, but it will last longer & save you money in the long run. How To Pet-Proof A Home Tens of millions of households throughout North America include pets. The American Veterinary Medical Foundation reports that more than 80 million households in the U.S. include companion animals. Pets are a big responsibility, & responsible pet owners recognize that the work begins even before pets come home. Pet proofing a home protects pets from accidents & injuries as they grow acclimated to their surroundings. • Install childproof latches. Much like children after they learn to crawl & then walk, young pets tend to be curious, & that curiosity can put them in precarious positions. Pet owners should install childproof latches on low drawers & cabinets, especially those beneath sinks where potentially harmful cleaning products are typically stored. Curious pet paws may be able to pry or pull open cabinets & drawers, but childproof latches can make that considerably more difficult if not impossible. • Close toilet lids. While images of puppies drinking from toilets may elicit some laughs, the nonprofit organization American Humane warns that chemicals in common toilet cleaners can be deadly to pets. In addition, small puppies or kittens can drown in toilets. Keep all toilet lids close when toilets are not in use. • Keep potentially harmful items out of pets’ reach. Household cleaners beneath the kitchen sink are not the only items around the house that can be harmful to pets. Medications should always be stored on high shelves where pets cannot reach them. In addition, make sure all laundry room items, including detergent & dryer sheets, are stored out of pets’ reach. Discuss human foods that might be harmful to pets with a veterinarian & make sure such foods are not left out where pets can reach them when you are hosting friends or family members. • Conceal all wires. Today’s homes are more connected than ever before, & that often translates to more wires around the house. Make sure all wires are bundled together & out of the reach and view of pets, who may be tempted to chew on them. • Move or remove potentially poisonous plants. Prospective pet owners should research each plant in their homes to make sure they’re not poisonous. Move potentially poisonous plants to places where pets cannot access them. Remove any poisonous floor plants from the home before purchasing or adopting a pet. Pets tend to be curious. Pet parents can protect pets from their own curiosity by pet proofing their homes.

5 Popular German Foods To Try This Oktoberfest Oktoberfest is a popular celebration of German culture. While beer might garner the bulk of the attention during Oktoberfest, celebrants would be wise to sample German cuisine when hoisting their steins during this year’s festivities. The world’s largest beer festival, Oktoberfest takes place in Munich, Germany, every year, typically beginning in late-September & extending into the first weekend in October. Oktoberfest celebrations in Germany have been held for more than 200 years, but those who cannot make it to Munich this year can still sample many of these delicious foods at their local Oktoberfest celebrations, or even find recipes & prepare them at home. 1. Spätzle: This dish is a combination of eggs, flour & salt & is often served as a side dish. Spätzle is similar to pasta & typically accompanies meat dishes. Spätzle is popular outside of Germany as well, & some people may refer to it as a noodle while others call it a dumpling. Either way, it’s delicious. 2. Maultaschen: This dish traces its origins to Swabia, a one-time duchy of medieval Germany located in the southwest region of the country. Maultaschen is reminiscent of ravioli because it consists of an outer layer of dough that may be filled with various foods, including minced meat, sauerkraut or spinach. Herbs & spices, including pepper & nutmeg, add to the flavor. 3. Fischbrötchen: Seafood might not be the first thing people expect to see on the menus at their favorite German restaurants, but this popular northern German dish is very flavorful. Essentially a fish sandwich, fischbrötchen is often served with Bismarck herring or soused herring, but is sometimes served with other fish, including salmon. Onions, pickles, remoulade, and/or horseradish sauce are often added, making this a great selection for those planning to hoist a stein or two this Oktoberfest. 4. Schweinsbraten: Munich is located in the federal state of Bavaria, & this is a traditional Bavarian dish of roasted pork. In the days before refrigeration, Bavarians heavily salted or pickled this dish to preserve it, & it is still served this way. Another hearty selection, schweinsbraten is a good choice for those who plan to indulge in their favorite German beers this Oktoberfest. 5. Rouladen: A meat dish that typically consists of bacon, onions, mustard, & pickles. These ingredients are wrapped together in beef or veal that is thinly sliced & then cooked together. Rouladen also might be served with venison or pork, but beef rouladen is the version most likely to be found at Oktoberfest celebrations. German cuisine is unique & flavorful and should be a part of anyone’s Oktoberfest celebrations.
