It is time the county board put some effort in to truly balancing their budget. It seems to me “just add some more tax somewhere” is the only way the budget can be balanced. I believe this is wrong. Who Was St. Patrick? Perhaps because the day celebrating him is so widely associated with revelry, St. Patrick is arguably among the world’s most popular saints. But as much as people may look forward to St. Patrick’s Day, few celebrants may know the story of St. Patrick. Though St. Patrick is widely associated with Ireland, he was born in Britain in the fourth century. In fact, Patrick’s first encounter with Ireland was not the result of his desire to visit the Emerald Isle. At age 16, Patrick was actually captured by Irish raiders and brought to Ireland as a slave, ultimately spending more than half a decade as a herdsman. Captivity may cause some to question or outright deny their faith, but Patrick’s faith strengthened during his time in slavery. Patrick was inspired to escape slavery by a dream in which he was told by God to head for the coast, where a ship took him back to his native land after he successfully persuaded the ship’s captain to allow him aboard. Upon returning to Britain, Patrick, along with others from the ship, would struggle his way through the wilderness before ultimately reuniting with his family. Now a young but nonetheless grown man, Patrick, the son of a Christian deacon, continued to study Christianity.

Patrick’s studies led him to pursue the priesthood, and he was eventually ordained a priest by the Bishop of Auxerre. Patrick would later be ordained a bishop, and was ultimately sent back to Ireland as a Christian missionary. The details of Patrick’s return to Ireland are hard to confirm, but it’s likely he landed in County Wicklow on the eastern coast of Ireland before heading north to spread the Gospel. In his autobiographical text “Confessio,” which is widely accepted as having been written by Patrick, he is largely vague about his work as a missionary. But he is believed to have converted thousands of native Irish to Christianity, all the while building churches and ordaining priests and bishops. Throughout the decades he spent traveling around the country as a Christian missionary, Patrick lived in poverty, enduring many hardships. The dates of his life are difficult to confirm, but St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated each year on March 17th because that is the day he is believed to have died in 461.

The Meaning Behind Easter Symbols Easter Sunday is one of the most meaningful days on the Christian calendar. Easter commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who Christians believe died by crucifixion as a sacrifice to atonement. Many symbols are associated with Easter, & understanding these symbols can help Christians & non-Christians alike gain a stronger grasp of this deeply meaningful Christian day of worship. • Lamb: According to CatholicCulture.org, the lamb represents Jesus Christ, who Christians believe is the Son of God. The lamb can be connected to Jewish Passover, a Jewish holiday that commemorates the liberation of the Israelites from Egyptian slavery. During the celebration of Passover, each Jewish family killed a lamb as a sacrifice. Christians commonly refer to Jesus as the Lamb of God who God sacrificed so Christians’ sins could be forgiven. • Easter eggs: While Easter eggs may seem like a secular symbol of Easter, their connection to Easter dates back many centuries. CatholicCulture.org notes that the early Christians saw the egg as symbolic of the tomb out of which Christ emerged when he was resurrected. Early Christians even painted Easter eggs, much like parents do with their children today, & even had them blessed & gave them as gifts. Historians believe King Edward I of England, who ruled from 1272-1307, dyed boiled eggs & gave them to members of his royal household. • Clothing: New clothing is another symbol of Easter that traces its origins back further than many Christians may realize. It’s customary for present-day Christians to don their Sunday best when attending Easter Sunday Mass, & the tradition of looking sharp on Easter can be traced to the early Christians, who would wear new white robes for baptisms during Easter services. Eventually, all Easter celebrants began to wear new clothes during Easter services. • Palm fronds: Palm Sunday is the final Sunday of Lent, taking place one week before Easter Sunday. Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. According to the Gospels, Jesus rode a young donkey into Jerusalem, where the townspeople threw palms in front of him in homage. That practice was a customary sign of respect in Jerusalem, & today Christians believe the palm is a sign of peace. Palms continue to be distributed to the faithful during Palm Sunday Mass.
