Various Ways You Can Put Pumpkins To Use Few items signal the fall harvest season more than the bright, orange pumpkins that dot fields & liven up displays outside of homes & businesses. Come fall, many pumpkins are turned into grinning jack-o-lanterns just in time for Halloween. But there are many other uses for pumpkins as well. Pumpkins are believed to have originated in North America. Early Native Americans relied on pumpkins as a source of food that helped them survive long winters. Pumpkins could be roasted, baked, boiled, & dried, & they were eaten & used as medicine. Pumpkin blossoms were added to stews. The shells of the pumpkins could be dried & used as eating & storage vessels. While pumpkins may now be symbolic of Halloween, the following are a handful of additional ways this versatile fruit can be put to use. Beauty regimen - Pumpkins contain a number of essential vitamins & minerals that can help replenish the skin. Pumpkin purée can be mixed with honey, aloe vera gel, olive oil, & a bit of cornmeal to create an exfoliating mask for the face or body. Pumpkin also can be used to rejuvenate dry or tired skin from cold weather. Honey, pumpkin & yogurt can be mixed together & used to condition hair. Let the mixture sit for 15-20 minutes, & then wash it out & shampoo. Foods & beverages - Pumpkin purée is the basis for many tasty, pumpkin-infused treats. Purée can be used in pies, cakes, muffins, breads, & many additional foods. Pumpkin purée also may be found in certain beverages, such as smoothies & shakes. A bit of spiced purée may appear as flavoring in teas & coffees. Roasted pumpkin seeds make a healthy treat. Foodies suggest using the seeds from “sugar pumpkins” or the ones best for making pies. Boil the seeds for a few minutes before draining. Spray a baking sheet with non-stick spray & put the seeds in a single layer. Bake at 400 F for 20 minutes. Allow to cool & serve. Pumpkin wines & beers are popular as well. There are many recipes for developing sweet, fermented beverages, which tend to be especially popular in the fall. The “guts” of the pumpkin can be simmered along with aromatics & other vegetables to create a vegetable stock perfect for soups & broths. Decorations - Pumpkins can also add to one’s home décor during the fall. Pumpkins can be carved for Halloween displays, hollowed-out to hold tealights or simply left on tables & used as centerpieces. Larger pumpkins may be used as natural flower pots for mums or other seasonal floral displays. As the Native Americans once did, pumpkins can be hollowed-out & used as bowls to serve favorite soups & dips. Use a hollowed, small pumpkin as a natural aromatic candle holder. Cut holes in the sides to vent the exhaust. Rub aromatic spices, such as cloves, nutmeg, allspice, cinnamon, & vanilla bean, on the inside of the pumpkin. Insert a beeswax candle in the bottom of the pumpkin & let it send inviting aromas into the air. Pumpkins are a versatile fruit that can serve many purposes beyond just jack-o-lanterns & pies.

Signs & Symptoms Of Prostate Cancer Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men in the world. According to the World Cancer Research Fund International, more than 1.1 million cases of prostate cancer were recored in 2012, accounting for 15% of new cancer diagnoses in men that year. Prostate cancer is often found before any symptoms arise. Prostate cancer screening no doubt contributes to that early detection, but many men are reluctant to be screened, feeling that the digital rectal exam, or DRE, is simply too uncomfortable to undergo. And the Prostate Cancer Foundation notes that there is no unanimous opinion in the medical community regarding the benefits of prostate cancer screening. Men should speak with their physicians to determine if screening is for them, ultimately choosing the option they are most comfortable with & the one they feel best promotes their long-term health. Men who choose not to get screened for prostate cancer or those who are on the fence regarding screening may benefit from learning as much as possible about the disease. Doing so can help them make more informed screening decisions, & those who choose to avoid screening can learn the potential signs & symptoms so they can bring any problems they might be experiencing to their physicians’ attention as soon as those abnormalities begin to surface. The PCF notes that not everyone will experience symptoms of prostate cancer, but some men will. Sometimes the presence of certain problems associated with prostate cancer may be indicative of other conditions, including benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH. BPH is not cancer, but it is an enlargement of the prostate, & a man’s risk for developing BPH grows every year. For example, BPH is present in 20% of men in their fifties, & that prevalence rises to 70% among men age 70 or older. Symptoms of prostatitis, a painful condition in which the prostate is inflamed, tender & swollen, may also resemble the symptoms of prostate cancer. But the PCF notes that prostatitis is a benign ailment that is not cancer & does not contribute to cancer. While not everyone experiences symptoms of prostate cancer, some men may experience changes in their urinary or sexual function. Men who notice the presence of any of the following symptoms should consult their physicians immediately. • A need to urinate frequently, especially at night • Difficulty starting urination or holding back urine • Weak or interrupted flow of urine • Painful or burning urination • Difficulty having an erection • Painful ejaculation • Blood in urine or semen More information about prostate cancer is available at www.pcf.org.
Fall Lawn Care Tips Spring & summer may be the seasons most often associated with landscaping & lawn care, but tending to lawns & gardens is a year-round job. If lawn & garden responsibilities dip considerably in winter, then fall is the last significant chance before the new year that homeowners will have to address landscaping. Fall lawn care differs from spring & summer lawn care, even if the warm temperatures of summer linger into autumn. Homeowners who want their lawns to thrive year-round can take advantage of the welcoming weather of fall to address any existing or potential issues. • Keep mowing, but adjust how you mow. It’s important that homeowners continue to mow their lawns so long as grass is growing. But as fall transitions into winter, lower the blades so the grass is cut shorter while remaining mindful that no blade of grass should ever be trimmed by more than one-third. Lowering the blades will allow more sunlight to reach the grass in the months ahead. • Remove leaves as they fall. Some homeowners may wait to pick up a rake until all of the trees on their properties are bare. However, allowing fallen leaves to sit on the ground for extended periods of time can have an adverse effect on grass. Leaves left to sit on the lawn may ultimately suffocate the grass by forming an impenetrable wall that deprives the lawn of sunlight & oxygen. The result is dead grass & possibly even fungal disease. Leaves may not need to be raked every day, but homeowners should periodically rake. • Repair bald spots. Summer exacts a toll on lawns in various ways, & homeowners may end up with a lawn filled with bald spots come September. Autumn is a great time to repair these bald spots. Lawn repair mixes like Scotts® PatchMaster contain mulch, seed & fertilizer to repair bald spots, which can begin to recover in as little as seven days. Before applying such products, remove dead grass & loosen the top few inches of soil. • Aerate the turf. Aerating reduces soil compacting, facilitating the delivery of fertilizer & water to a lawn’s roots. While many homeowners, & particularly those who take pride in tending to their own lawns, can successfully aerate their own turf, it’s best to first have soil tested so you know which amendments to add after the ground has been aerated. Gardening centers & home improvement stores sell soil testing kits that measure the pH of soil, but homeowners who want to test for nutrients or heavy metals in their soil may need to send their samples to a lab for further testing. Fall lawn care provides a great reason to spend some time in the yard before the arrival of winter.

The Nation Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Each year between September 15 to October 15 people observe & celebrate the unique histories, contributions and cultural influences of Hispanics. Hispanic people are those who hail or whose ancestors hail from South America, Central America, Mexico, Spain, & areas of the Caribbean. Throughout early autumn, Hispanic culture & history is celebrated. The dates of Hispanic Heritage Month is significant because it includes the anniversaries of independence for various Latin American countries. September 15 marks when Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, & Nicaragua achieved independence. The first official Hispanic heritage commemoration was observed in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week. It was expanded in 1988 under then-president Ronald Reagan to encompass a full month. Enacted into law on August 17, 1988, National Hispanic Heritage Month has been celebrated ever since. The term “Hispanic” refers to people who can trace their lineage to Spanish-speaking nations. Hispanic also includes Latinos, who originate from Latin American countries. Nearly all Latinos also can be classified as Hispanic, with the exception of Brazilians because they speak Portuguese.
