How To Store Fresh Apples Apples are a popular fruit that are grown in different places around the world. Come autumn, apples can be seen filling farm stands & supermarkets all over North America. Apples are available year-round, but many apple lovers insist there’s nothing better than plucking an apple directly off the tree in the fall. Apple orchards & pickyour-own farms are visited each autumn by apple lovers anxious for apples’ tart & juicy taste. Many people pick more apples than they can eat in a few days, so it pays to learn how to store apples properly. Start by picking a variety of apple that won’t go bad too quickly. Apple growers can make suggestions, but Jonathan, Rome, Fuji, & Granny Smith varieties tend to last longer than other varieties. Choose apples that are free of blemishes or soft spots. The adage that “one bad apple can spoil the whole bunch” bears some truth. Apples give off ethylene gas as they decay, & a rotting apple can quickly affect nearby apples. A good place to store apples in the short-term is in the refrigerator where it is cool. Put the apples in the crisper drawer. Do not store them with vegetables, as the apples may cause the veggies to ripen or rot prematurely. If you plan on long-term storage, a few extra steps are necessary. Apples need to be individually wrapped so they will not come in contact with other apples. Newsprint works great; just be sure to pick the pages that are done in black ink because colored ink may contain heavy metals. Once wrapped, place each apple in a container padded with more newspaper. Store this container in a cool place, such as a garage, root cellar or screened-in porch. Apples can last a couple of months if stored in this manner. Keep apples away from potatoes, as potatoes can cause the fruit to prematurely decay. Another way to store apples is to turn them into preserves or apple sauce. By boiling the apples & sealing them shut in canning jars, that fresh apple taste can be enjoyed long after the apples are picked. Consult with a canning expert about the right way to begin the process. Fruits are generally canned using a boiling-water canner. However, some fruits, like apples, can be canned with a pressure canner. Because apples tend to discolor when the flesh meets the air, use a little lemon juice to prevent this while canning. Turning apples into candied apples also can help them keep longer. Apples can be dipped into a sugary coating, caramel or toffee to be enjoyed later on. Of course, you always can bake apples into a pie as well, then freeze the pie for another day. Autumn would be incomplete without apples. Get ready for apple season by developing a storage plan before you visit the orchard.

What To Do When A Tire Blows Out While Driving Many frightening scenarios can unfold while driving. Inclement weather can affect visibility & the safety of roads, while distracted driving can put anyone on the road in harm’s way. One situation that can suddenly turn a Sunday drive into something scary is a blown out tire. No drivers or vehicles are immune to blown out tires. But savvy drivers who know what to do in such situations can greatly reduce their risk of a blown out tire turning into something far worse. Recognizing a blown out tire - The movies might make blown out tires seem as though drivers suddenly find themselves in wholly uncontrollable situations. But blown out tires won’t immediately send cars into the nearest roadside ditch. When a tire blows, the vehicle will immediately slow down & then begin pulling to the right or left, depending on which side of the car suffered the blowout. The automotive retailer Pep Boys notes that, if a front tire blows out, drivers will feel the force in their steering wheels, while a rear tire blowout will be felt more in the seat and/or body of the vehicle. Driving through a blowout - Plenty of drivers have safely navigated their way through tire blowouts. When such a situation arises, drivers should avoid slamming on their brakes, instead allowing their vehicles to gradually decelerate, making sure to turn on their emergency flashing lights once they are certain they have control of the vehicle. As the vehicle slows down, pull to the side of the road, calling for help if necessary. When on the side of the road - Drivers who do not have a spare tire or cannot change the tire themselves should wait patiently for assistance to arrive after they have called for help. Drivers who can change their tires should place reflective cones or triangles behind their vehicles before they begin working. Such devices warn oncoming drivers of stranded vehicles. If replacing the tire with a donut, remember that such replacement tires are not designed to travel long distances and will need to be replaced shortly after they are put on the vehicle.

Stouts: Stouts also are made with top fermenting yeast, placing them in the ale category, though they are not as sweet as ales. Stouts, including the popular Irish stout Guinness, tend to feature creamy heads. A dark, coffeelike character also is common in many stouts, & that can be traced to the use of unmalted roasted barley.

When making charitable donations, many people are quick to take out their checkbooks. Many nonprofit organizations also accept noncash donations. Donating items is not as simple as making a financial contribution. While writing a check takes only a few seconds, donating items requires more time & a careful consideration of the items themselves. Consider the following tips. • Carefully examine items before donating them. Items that have seen far better days likely won’t have much value to charitable organizations. Once such items are donated, the charity must then make an effort to dispose of them. That can cost the charity time & money, neither of which charities have in abundance. Before donating noncash items, examine them carefully to make sure they’re items the charity can make use of or sell. New or unused items will likely pass the test, as will items with very little wear & tear. But an armchair that’s showing its age or an old washing machine that barely works likely won’t prove too valuable to the charity.
Arthritis affects hundreds of millions of people across the globe. The Arthritis Foundation® notes that more than 50 million adults in the U.S. have some type of arthritis, while the European League Against Rheumatism estimates that rheumatic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis affect more than 120 million people in the European Union. In Canada, the Canadian Community Health Survey found that 16 percent of Canadians age 15 & older were affected by arthritis. The Arthritis Foundation notes that arthritis is not a single disease. In fact, the word “arthritis” is something of an umbrella term & an informal way of referring to joint pain or joint disease. While these conditions may produce some common symptoms, such as swelling, pain & stiffness, learning to distinguish between some common types of arthritis can help men and women manage their conditions more effectively. Osteoarthritis - which is sometimes referred to as “degenerative joint disease” or “OA,” is the most common chronic condition of the joints. The symptoms of OA vary depending on the joints that are affected, but pain & stiffness, especially first thing in the morning or after resting, are common. OA can affect the hips, knees, fingers, or feet, & those with OA may feel limited range of motion in their affected areas. Some with OA may hear clicking or cracking sounds when the affected joints bend, & pain associated with OA may be more intense after activity or toward the end of the day. Inflammatory arthritis - occurs when the immune system, which can employ inflammation to fight infection & prevent disease, mistakenly attacks the joints with uncontrolled inflammation. Such a mistake can contribute to joint erosion & even organ damage. Genetics & environmental factors, such as smoking, may trigger instances of inflammatory arthritis. Infectious arthritis - Bacterium, a virus or a fungus that enters the joint may trigger inflammation & lead to infection arthritis. The Arthritis Foundation notes that the most common bacteria to cause infection arthritis is staphylococcous aureus, or staph. The majority of infectious arthritis cases occur after an infection somewhere else in the body travels through the bloodstream to the joint, though some infections may enter the joint directly through a puncture wound near the joint or during surgery near the joint. Intense swelling & pain, typically in a single joint, are the most common symptoms of infectious arthritis, which is most likely to affect the knee, though it can affect the hips, ankles & wrists. Some people with infection arthritis may also experience fever & chills. Metabolic arthritis - The body produces uric acid to break down purines, a substance found in many foods & in human cells. But some people produce more uric acid than they need, which they then struggle to get rid of quickly. As a result, uric acid can build up. The Arthritis Foundation notes that this buildup can lead to the formation of needle-like crystals in the joints that cause sudden spikes of extreme pain. The Food & Drug Admin. has strict guidelines in place to phase out the use of antibiotics in food animals to enhance growth or improve feed efficiency.
