Natural Ways To Beat Seasonal Allergies The American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology says nasal allergies affect approximately 50 million people in the United States. Drowsiness, dry mouth and nasal irritation may be side effects of common allergy drugs. People who want to avoid allergy medication can look to natural remedies to alleviate their symptoms. Whether used alone or in concert with traditional medicine, these remedies may make spending time outdoors more pleasant. • Try probiotics. Probiotics, those friendly bacteria that reside in the digestive system, can do more than just treat an upset stomach. Naturopathic doctors say that probiotics also can influence the immune system and may help strengthen its response to common allergens. Since probiotics are good for replenishing healthy bacteria in the body anyway, many people may want to keep taking them once their allergy symptoms have come and gone. • Use neti pots or saline sprays. A small amount of saltwater can rinse away allergens, such as pollen, that get lodged in the nose. These rinses also can help clear up congestion and flush out any other irritants. • Load up on omega-3s. A German study published in the journal Allergy found that participants who ate foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids were less likely to suffer allergy symptoms than those who didn’t regularly eat these foods. Omega-3s can help fight inflammation. Drinking more fluids and using spices in cooking can help flush out allergens as well. • Don’t forget vitamin C. Vitamin C is an immune-system booster and may help prevent the formation of histamine in the body, a substance responsible for many allergy symptoms.

Who has not heard the old adage, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”? It may seem unlikely that one fruit could be so effective at maintaining good health, but apples really are a super food. Apples are a member of the Rose family and are related to pears, peaches, apricots and plums. According to new information from long-running studies published in the British Medical Journal, eating at least two servings a week of whole fruit, particularly apples, blueberries or grapes, reduces a person’s risk for type 2 diabetes by around 23 percent. Apples are high in many antioxidants and, as a result, this makes them especially valuable at fighting illness. For example, the disease-fighting compounds in antioxidants have been shown to reduce the risk of certain cancers by neutralizing free radicals. Apples also are very high in fiber. Fiber is needed to help a person feel full and can also regulate digestive function. Fiber also can help reduce cholesterol by preventing the buildup of cholesterol-causing plaques in the blood vessels, improving cardiovascular function and possibly reducing risk of a stroke as a result. In addition to working their magic inside of the body, apples can have a noticeable impact on physical appearance as well. Apples are sometimes referred to as “nature’s toothbrushes” because they can brighten and clean the teeth. The crisp, abrasive texture stimulates the gums and removes debris from the teeth. What’s more, the natural mild acidity of apples helps to stimulate saliva production that can rinse away germs that lead to plaque. An apple weighs in at under 100 calories per serving, making them a low-fat and ideal snack any time of the day. Because they are low in calories and full of fiber, apples can help men and women maintain a healthy weight. Because apples can be plagued by insects and parasites, some growers repeatedly spray the trees with pesticides. It is advisable to buy organic apples to avoid many of the pesticide dangers and to be able to safely eat the apples raw.

APPLE CRISP Ingredients 1/4 cup instant oatmeal 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/3 cup firmly packed light brown sugar

Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. 2. Spray an 8 x 8 inch baking dish with non-stick cooking spray. 3. In a bowl, thoroughly combine the oatmeal, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg & butter. 4. Core and thinly slice the apples. 5. Spread the apple slices evenly over the surface of the baking pan. 6. Care will be provided at Poplar Grove Elementary, located at 208 N. State Street in Poplar Grove, for the 2017-2018 school year. Transportation to and from Manchester and Capron Elementary schools for the program at Poplar Grove Elementary will be provided by North Boone School District. The Before School program will run from 5:30 AM until the start of school. A light breakfast, prepared by the staff, will be provided to the children. In addition, the staff will provide a structured morning routine that will include homework assistance and activities such as arts and crafts, board games and gym time. The After School program will run from the end of school until 6:00 PM. A healthy snack will be served to the participants. Interactive and structured afternoon events will be planned and rotated daily. They will include homework help, arts & crafts, board games, fun fitness classes, structured gym games and playground time (weather permitting). Additionally, the After School program will include community partnerships to offer healthy living opportunities & activities to the participants. Students are not allowed to enter the dance after 7:30 PM and cannot leave until 9:00 PM unless a parent comes in to pick them up. Refreshments are available for purchase. SWIM TEAM YMCA BARRACUDA COMPETITIVE SWIM TEAM (5 - 21 years) Would you like to be a part of a top competitive swim team. Our 2016-2017 team came in THIRD PLACE this year at the IL State Championships. This professionally coached swim team works to mold healthy and trustworthy future citizens through emphasizing the ideals of good sportsmanship, loyalty, perseverance, courage, and reverence. The team competes as part of the Northwest District of the IL on the local level with a chance for swimmers to compete at both the State and National Level. Come try out the team free for a week! Swimmers need to be able to swim l length of the pool using freestyle arms and face in the water. There will be a parent meeting on August 14th at 6:30 pm in the social room of the YMCA. Downsizing with regard to living space is a trend that has long been associated with empty nesters and senior citizens. As children move out and start families of their own, many homeowners decide to downsize to less expensive, more manageable properties But downsizing is not just for seniors anymore. According to a 2017 survey from the popular real estate website Trulia, among homeowners currently living in homes larger than 2,000 square feet, more would choose a smaller home than a larger one if they decided to move this year (60.6 percent to 39.4 percent). Homeowners who decided to downsize or those who purchased a small property to begin with may need a few pointers to make the most of their limited space. • Reconsider your furniture. Furniture can make rooms feel cozy, cramped or spacious. For homeowners with limited space in their homes, furniture that also can be used as storage can save space without sacrificing comfort. For the bedroom, choose a storage bed if the quarters are cramped and it’s difficult to find space for two dressers. Such beds also can be used to store bed linens if closet space is limited. Purchase storage ottomans and/or end tables with storage beneath to make living areas feel less cramped. • Discard some items. Homeowners who are downsizing from large homes may need to part with some of their furniture to make their transition to smaller homes go more smoothly. For example, homeowners may need to get by with just one bedroom nightstand and may even need to replace their existing nightstands with something more compact. Discarding living room end tables and downsizing to a smaller coffee table also can help homeowners make smaller common areas more welcoming and less cluttered. • Put paint to work. Paint is another way to make the most of a limited space. Painting certain pieces of furniture the same color as the wall can make the furniture blend in and feel less imposing. The result is a room that feels calm and open, even if there is less space to move around than homeowners might have grown accustomed to in their larger homes. • Keep surfaces free of clutter. Surfaces such as dining tables, coffee tables and kitchen counters tend to accumulate clutter. While such clutter might not feel overwhelming in a large home, in small spaces crowded surfaces can make it feel as though the walls are closing in. Make an effort to keep surfaces free of clutter, resolving to discard or put items away each night before going to bed. Many people wish they could live in homes without as much square footage as their existing homes. For those who have downsized, there are many ways to make the most of less living space.

Mammograms help to detect breast cancer early, improving women’s prognosis as a result. Susan G. Komen states that mammography is the most effective breast cancer screening tool in use today. When women should begin getting mammograms remains open to debate. The American Cancer Society now recommends that women between the ages of 45 and 54 receive annual mammograms. Despite the benefits of mammograms, many women avoid them out of fear of the pain & discomfort associated with the procedure. But researchers are examining how much pressure mammogram machines need to apply to get accurate breast images. Until widespread customized mammograms are offered, women can take various steps to reduce the amount of discomfort they feel while undergoing these important screening procedures. • Apply a numbing gel. BreastCancer.org says a study found that applying a numbing gel an hour before having a mammogram resulted in less discomfort. Discuss application of the gel with your doctor prior to procedure. • Do not schedule a mammogram right before or during a menstrual cycle, when breasts already are very tender due to hormonal changes. Waiting until seven to 14 days after a period is a better bet. • Take pain relief pills. A physician may suggest taking ibuprofen or acetaminophen prior to the appointment to reduce discomfort before & after the procedure. • Speak with the technician. Women can express their concerns about pain to the mammogram technician, who might suggest various ways to minimize discomfort. • Learn about padding. Find an imaging center that uses padding on mammogram plates. MammoPad is a soft, white, single-use foam pad that is invisible to X-rays. • Some women find caffeine contributes to breast tenderness. Avoid caffeine the week before the procedure. Mammograms are an important health care tool. Reducing discomfort may encourage women to follow guidelines regarding mammograms more closely. A Brief History Of American Football According to Nielsen, 111.3 million people tuned in to watch the Super Bowl in early 2017. Almost two-thirds of adults in the United States say they currently watch National Football League games. But American football is no longer relegated to the boundaries of the United States, as it is becoming a global sport. According to the International Federation of American Football, there are 80 countries with organized federations governing the game. Plus, thousands of youth & adult leagues exist all over the world. Even though soccer has long been a global sport, it seems the other kind of “football” is quickly catching up. The sport known as American football was borne out of the English sports of association football (soccer) & rugby. During the late 19th century, elite Northeastern colleges took up the sport, playing a soccer-type game with rules adopted from the London Football Assoc. Intercollegiate matches began to spring up at schools such as Rutgers, Princeton, Harvard, & McGill University. Rugby-type rules became preferential among players & spectators. Walter Camp, known affectionately as the “Father of American Football,” transformed the rugby-style game into the one that resembles American football today. Camp brought two key innovations to the game. The opening “scrummage” was eliminated, & a rule was introduced that required a team to give up the ball after failing to advance down the field a specific yardage. Camp also developed the quarterback position, lines of scrimmage & the scoring scale used in football today. Early games were controversial because of the high rate of injury. Even President Theodore Roosevelt stepped in to ask collegiate teams to revise regulations to make the game less brutal. The committee overseeing the rules would later become known as the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Thanks largely in part to the popularity of college football, professional football began to gain traction with the public. The American Professional Football Assoc. was formed in 1920. That league would later become the National Football League. The first televised NFL game was in 1939. Eventually, American football’s popularity would explode. Cheerleaders were introduced to the game in the 1960s. Currently, the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders are the most famous squad. Six teams in the NFL do not have cheerleaders: the Chicago Bears, the Cleveland Browns, the Detroit Lions, the New York Giants, the Pittsburgh Steelers, & the Green Bay Packers. Football games typically last around 3 hours. Average attendance for an NFL game is 66,957 spectators. American football has become a multibillion-dollar industry. What developed on college campuses has grown into a worldwide phenomenon.

Memory Café In partnership with Northwoods Care Centre/Maplecrest Care Centre, Rockford University, Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Illinois Chapter and Malgorzata K. Bach, MD, Rockford Health Systems, the Boone County Council on Aging is hosting Memory Café meetings at The Steam Plant Restaurant in Belvidere. The purpose of the Memory Cafe is to provide knowledge, understanding and education about memory loss in a relaxed atmosphere. The meeting will be held in the meeting room at The Steam Plant Restaurant. Meetings will be held on the third Tuesday of the month. The next meeting is Tuesday, August 15th, at 6:00 PM.
