Elderly Especially Susceptible To The Heat Many people might choose a nice, hot day over a blustery, cold afternoon. However, excessively hot days can not only feel uncomfortable, but they can also prove life-threatening. Elderly men & women, in particular, are susceptible to the effects of hot temperatures. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people ages 65 & older are more prone to heat stroke & heat-related stress than those of other ages. Seniors’ bodies are not able to adjust to sudden changes in temperature as quickly as younger people’s. A chronic condition that affects the body’s response to heat, as well as taking certain prescription medications also may play a role in seniors’ susceptibility to the heat. The City of Sacramento Department of Parks & Recreation says that around 370 deaths from heat-related illnesses occur across the United States each year. Nearly half of those deaths are people who are 65 & older. Prolonged heat exposure can take quite a toll on the average person. Factor in the more delicate health of many seniors, & the hot weather can be quite dangerous. Further compounding the problem is higher energy costs. Seniors living on fixed incomes may not be able to afford to turn on air conditioners because of the power draw. There are different types of heat-related injuries, though heat exhaustion & heat stroke are the most common. Here are signs that a person may be experiencing one or the other. Heat Exhaustion Heat Stroke * weakness * extremely high body * tiredness temperature (over 105 F) * heavy sweating * red, hot and dry skin * paleness * absence of sweat * dizziness * nausea * throbbing headache * vomiting * dizziness * fainting * nausea * fast, weak pulse rate * headache * fast and shallow breathing What to do Friends or family members should check in with an elderly relative or friend when the weather is especially warm to ensure they’re safely handling the heat. In addition, people of all ages can take the following precautions to keep cool when the temperatures rise. * Drink cool, nonalcoholic beverages. Water & diluted fruit juices can help rehydrate the body quickly. * Restrict physical activity. * Take a cool shower or bath or wipe yourself down with a damp cloth. * Seek an air-conditioned environment. For those who won’t or can’t turn on the air conditioning, visit a shopping mall or library to keep cool. * Wear lightweight clothing. * Try to remain indoors during the hottest hours of the day. * Wear hats or use an umbrella to shield your head from sunshine outdoors. * Eat cool foods, but avoid extremely cold foods. Otherwise you risk the chance of developing stomach cramps. * Do not do laundry or turn on appliances that contribute to extra indoor heat. The heat is nothing to take lightly, especially when it comes to your health.

Recognizing the dangers of ticks & how to avoid tick bites can help people reduce their risk for contracting Lyme disease. Ticks are part of the arachnid family, but unlike spiders, ticks attach to the skin of an animal & suck its blood. Ticks can be found just about anywhere, but they tend to gravitate toward wooded areas or tall grasses, which offer them protection & good vantage points to find an animal host. Ticks are routine problems for dogs that are not properly protected. But ticks also prey on humans. Many tick bites are harmless & do not require treatment. However, if bitten by a tick that is carrying Lyme disease people may need to take an antibiotic to prevent any lasting health effects. As a result, people should always visit a doctor when bitten by a tick. Pesticide repellants are some of the more effective & well-known methods to prevent tick bites & subsequent side effects. Those who prefer to go a more natural route can take the following precautionary measures. • Watch habitats. Steer clear of grassy, wooded & brushy areas. Ticks also prefer humid conditions. • Stick to trails when hiking or walking to avoid brushing up against areas where ticks may be hiding out. • Wear proper clothing. Light-colored clothing makes it easier to spot ticks that may have made their way onto a person. Tuck pants into socks, as ticks tend to climb onto hosts from the ground up. • Protect hair & heads. Wear a hat and/or keep long hair contained so that it isn’t an attractive hiding spot. • Shower immediately. After coming in from areas known for ticks, shower & launder clothing immediately. While showering, do a spot inspection looking for ticks on your body. • Clean up the yard. Make your yard less habitable to ticks by mowing the grass regularly & removing leaf litter & trim shrubs. Also, use wood chips or gravel to serve as a barrier between lawns & wooded areas of the property. • Use natural oils. Ticks may not like the smell of garlic, lemon, eucalyptus, lavender, & rosemary, among others. Dotting your body with these infused oils may make you less attractive to ticks.

How To Protect Yourself From Theft Anyone who has had their home broken into or been the victim of identity theft understands just how unsettling it can be to have their privacy invaded. To think that a stranger has rooted through your stuff may be even more upsetting than losing the stolen items. Approximately 15 million U.S. residents have their identities used fraudulently each year, with financial losses totaling upwards of $50 billion. Perhaps thanks to the prevalence of Web-based accounts & transactions, as well as reliance on digital services, identity fraud & other types of theft have increased in frequency. According to a 2013 report from Javelin Strategy & Research, an incident of identity fraud occurs every three seconds. Just about anyone is vulnerable to an identity/data attack. It’s crucial to take steps to protect yourself from identity theft & other forms of theft. This is accomplished through God’s living word in the scriptures of the Holy Bible, prayers & message of hope. It is also an appropriate opportunity to celebrate the life lived. Allowing us to remember the important lessons & experiences that we learned from our loved one & to carry those forward in our own life. Lastly, there is the opportunity to live into our faith as we take leave from our loved ones physical presence. The body or elements of our loved one are committed to the ground or some other place & the spirit is commended to God. This acknowledges that, in hope & trust, we will never be separated from the love of God through Christ, & the love we have for our loved one, in Christ, can never be broken. So there you have it. The importance of a funeral is to allow time for the community to come to offer love & support; to give thanks to God for the creation of the life of our loved one, & to celebrate that life; & to live into a new reality in exercising our faith. BCCD’s Kishwaukee River Cleanup Saturday July 16th, 9 AM Come help us clean up the Kishwaukee River. Participants must provide their own canoe and equipment. A sack lunch is recommended. Water, soda, and chips provided by The Conservation District. Meet at Hickory Bills Island, Belvidere Park at 8:45 AM. Volunteers will float down the river pulling trash and objects from the river and banks. Pick up point will be at the Distillery canoe launch at approximately 1:00 PM. Drivers will be shuttled back to the beginning. Call the BCCD office at 815547-7935 to register and for more information. This program is funded by a $500 grant from the Illinois EPA’s Streambank Clean Up & Lakeshore Enhancement Program.
