Festive Facts For July 4th Each year on July 4, Americans celebrate the birth of their nation and independence from Great Britain. This day marks the anniversary of the presentation and acceptance of the Declaration of Independence, signed 243 years ago on July 4, 1776.

The Declaration of Independence began as a letter to Britain’s King George to explain why the Continental Congress was interested in declaring independence from Great Britain. The writing of the declaration began on July 2 & the final wording was established on July 4. Independence Day is full of opportunities to celebrate & enjoy oneself. Parades, fireworks, parties, barbecues, & much more are part of the festivities. Another way to commemorate Independence Day is to educate oneself about the many historical & entertaining facts that surround the day. The following are some interesting details about the origins of Independence Day & the celebrations that surround it. • Although 56 people eventually signed the Declaration of Independence, only John Hancock signed the document on July 4, 1776. The rest added their names later on. John Hancock’s signature is ornate & widely recognized. Putting your “John Hancock” on a document has become synonymous with signing something. • The Declaration of Independence was adopted while the Continental Congress met in Philadelphia at the Pennsylvania Statehouse. That building is now known as Independence Hall. • The average age of the signers of the Declaration of Independence was 45. The youngest person to sign was Thomas Lynch, Jr., who was 27 when he signed. Benjamin Franklin, at age 70, was the oldest signee. • John Adams & Thomas Jefferson were the only signees who went on to serve as presidents. Coincidentally, Jefferson & Adams both died on July 4, 1826, within hours of each other. • Philadelphia is the birth place of much American history & is home to the Liberty Bell. Each Independence Day, the Liberty Bell is tapped (not rung, as the vibration would further damage the cracked bell) 13 times in honor of the original 13 American colonies. • The original 13 American colonies were located all along the eastern seaboard. They include Virginia, New York, New Hampshire, Massachusetts Bay, Maryland, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Delaware, North Carolina, South Carolina, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, & Georgia. • The stars on the original American flag were placed in a circle. This was so all of the colonies would be equally represented. • Independence was gained in 1776, & the first celebration took place in Philadelphia four days later. The White House held its first Independence Day festivities in 1801. • Benjamin Franklin proposed that the turkey be the national bird of the United States. However, John Adams & Thomas Jefferson overruled him, & the bald eagle became the national bird.

Emergency Preparedness Tips For Seniors Natural disasters can strike at any time, & when they do, the damage is often considerable. According to the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, between 2005 & 2014 natural disasters caused $1.4 trillion in damage across the globe, affecting 1.7 billion people along the way. Various preventive measures can protect people & their homes from the potentially devastating impact of natural disasters. For example, oceanfront communities may be able to decrease property damage by exacting certain measures, such as building homes on stilts. Another way to prevent tragedy related to natural disasters is to develop an emergency preparedness plan before the next storm strikes. That’s important for everyone, but especially so for seniors, many of whom live with mobility issues that can compromise their ability to escape the eye of oncoming storms. In recognition of the potential problems seniors face when natural disasters strike, the American Red Cross offers the following tips to seniors & their families to make it through such situations safe & sound. • Make arrangements to contact loved ones. Prior to an emergency, seniors & their support network should make arrangements to make immediate contact once a disaster strikes. Determine who will make initial contact & how that contact will be made (i.e., via phone, text message, social media, etc.), as well as who will be responsible for providing assistance if necessary. Such a plan lets everyone within the support network know their precise responsibilities, which limits confusion in the sometimes hectic hours & days after disaster strikes. • Exchange keys. Make sure everyone in the support network has keys to seniors’ homes. In so doing, support networks are increasing the chances that someone will be able to reach potentially vulnerable seniors if the primary contacts are incapable of doing so. • Let others know where emergency supplies are kept. Everyone should have emergency supplies in their homes. Seniors should not take it for granted that such supplies can be easily found if they become incapacitated during a storm. Make sure such information can be easily accessed during a storm by emailing it to your support network and/or posting the information in a convenient location, such as on the refrigerator. • Share your evacuation plans. In the wake of recent disasters, many communities that did not previously feel vulnerable to natural disasters have devised evacuation plans for residents. Seniors should share these plans with their support networks. Doing so makes it easier for relatives to find you if you must evacuate your home before help arrives. • Share important medical information. Seniors should share medical information, such as healthcare providers & a list of the medications they’re taking. This can make things easier for emergency responders to successfully treat people who become incapacitated during storms. Emergency preparedness strategies save lives. “In this life you will have trouble. But take heart, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33. Yes in this life we experience all kinds of trouble. As a kid, I experienced trouble in the forms of skinned knees, poor report cards & the time I hid a tuna fish sandwich in my toy box. As an adult, the troubles I have experienced are greater, & more soul shaking. Death of a loved one is one of those times in life that we experience trouble. The fact that we are spiritual beings wrapped in a body, makes death a spiritual dilemma as well as a human loss. So what are we to do? Well...we address both sides of loss, body & spirit. From the bodily side of loss, our human loss, we experience the exercise of tidying up our worldly affairs. Obtaining death certificates, contacting insurance companies, notifying the attorney regarding probate & other legal matters. All of these worldly items force us to acknowledge that something hurtful has occurred. We can’t truly escape it, for it is always there, until we address it. But there is more to it than that. In a previous article you may remember the words regarding need for visitation. The importance of the visitation is in allowing a time for the community to respond to our pain of loss & separation from our loved one. It is an opportunity to receive comfort & support from those around us. It is also an opportunity to allow the healing balm of God to be applied, remembering the words of Christ, when three or more are gathered in my name, there I am. Most visitations occur in the evening, allowing for adequate time for necessary conversations to occur as well as sacred moments with the deceased. It is our human response to the loss of someone we love & cherish. This, too, has the importance of facing the reality that something hurtful has occurred, but we take comfort in knowing that there are many who come to our aid & cloak us with their love & support.
What about the spiritual implications? Remember these words regarding a funeral ceremony. The funeral ceremony, for those of the Judeo-Christian beliefs, is an opportunity to give thanks to God for the creation & life of our loved one. This is accomplished through God’s living word in the scriptures of the Holy Bible, prayers & messages of hope. It is also an appropriate opportunity to celebrate the life lived. Allowing us to remember the important lessons & experiences that we learned from our loved one & to carry those forward in our own life. We take heart & rest in the love of Jesus Christ our savior, remembering his words, “Come to me, all of you who are weary & carry heavy burdens, & I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28. He said all of us, not some of us. So the choice is ours. When I have tried to do things on my own, I fail. And I fail miserably. So I seek the Lord, rest in his grace & allow him to restore me. He gives courage to face the future, his presence removes the feeling of loneliness, & he gives strength to move us from the worldly pitfalls that ensnare so many. God does truly understand, for he is the one who sent his son to take our place on the cross & raised him from the dead, so that we too may have life eternal. He makes it easy for us, if we just turn to him & believe in our heart that God raised Christ from the dead & profess with our mouth that Jesus is our Lord. In this way we have hope even in the midst of death & grief. May Christ strengthen you & keep you near.

Ingredients 4 cups mixed baby lettuce 1 - 15 oz. can sliced beets 1 sm. fresh orange, peeled, divided into segments & cut in half 2 oz. low fat feta cheese, crumbled 1/4 cup walnuts, roasted & chopped
Dressing 2 T. olive oil 1 T. orange juice 1 T. raspberry blush vinegar 1 t. Splenda 1 T. non-fat Greek yogurt Salt & pepper to taste
Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place walnuts in a single layer on a cookie sheet. Bake about 8 minutes. 2. Arrange lettuce onto 4 serving plates 3. Next layer beets, orange segments & feta & walnuts. 4. Combine all dressing ingredients in a jar with a tight fitting lid. Shake or whisk together until well blended. 5. Drizzle dressing evenly over salad.

We all know the importance of staying healthy as we age. If we eat a healthy diet & exercise regularly that will help us to live a better quality of life. In that same way we also need to continue to socialize as we age. Isolation can be an issue for many seniors. At times the challenge of getting out of the house to socialize is due to poor health, lack of transportation, or an uncertainty of where to find social opportunities. It is because of this desire to be part of a community & have opportunities to socialize that many choose the option of living in a senior community. There are many options for senior housing & depending on one’s needs those options can be found right here in Boone County. Socialization reduces depression & improves overall health. Social activates help keep us mentally engaged & can even prevent the onset of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Many times people find themselves living alone, although they may still be able to get out into the world; it may not be as often as they would like. At any age or stage of life we can find ourselves isolated from the world. Busy schedules & even the way we have built our houses in the aim for privacy has created that isolation. Something that appeals to folks about living in an assisted lifestyle community, such as Heritage Woods of Belvidere, is access to socialization & activities. Having friends to share in mealtimes, join in a game of cards or just watching television together can bring a sense of connectedness that a person can lose when living alone. How To Avoid Heat Stroke On Hot Summer Days Heat stroke is a life-threatening emergency & the most severe form of heat illness that results from long, extreme exposure to the sun. During this exposure, a person’s built-in cooling system may fail to produce enough sweat to lower their body temperature, putting his or her life at risk as a result. Heat stroke develops rapidly & requires immediate medical treatment. If not treated immediately, heat stroke can prove fatal. The elderly, infants, people whose occupations require them to work outdoors, & the mentally ill are among the people with an especially high risk of heat stroke. Obesity & poor circulation also increase a person’s risk of suffering heat stroke. Alcohol & certain types of medications also can make people more at risk for heat stroke. Heat stroke symptoms include: Headache; dizziness; disorientation, agitation, confusion; sluggishness or fatigue; seizure; hot, dry skin that is flushed but not sweaty; high body temperature; loss of consciousness; rapid heartbeat, & hallucinations. The simplest way to prevent heat stroke is to avoid spending time outdoors in the sun on hot days. If you must go outdoors, do so when temperatures are mild & the sun is low, such as in the early morning or evening. Do the following to prevent heat stroke: • Drink plenty of fluids, such as water & sports drinks that can help your body maintain its electrolyte balance. Avoid caffeinated beverages like coffee, soda & tea as well as alcohol. • Wear lightweight, tightly woven & loose-fitting clothing in light colors. • Always wear a hat & sunglasses when going outdoors, & use an umbrella on especially hot days. • Take frequent drinks during outdoor activities & mist yourself with a spray bottle to reduce overheating.
