Unique Ideas For Mother’s Day During Pandemic We will be able to hug our Mom’s again one day, but for now here are some ideas of ways to celebrate your mom, or grandma while honoring social distancing regulations. A little celebration or gesture can go a long way. Send Mom her favorite meal: Whip up one of the best brunch recipes and drop the meal off at her doorstep. Make it extra special by adding a card to the bag. Order takeout from her favorite restaurant: Support a local restaurant & put a smile on your mom’s face all in one. There are plenty of restaurants offering free delivery during this time, so order dinner & dessert & have it delivered right to your mom’s door. Make a gratitude video: To show your mom how grateful you are for the values & lessons she’s taught you, make a video montage of you & your siblings thanking her. Have each sibling share their favorite memories. Get grandchildren & other family members involved as well for the ultimate tribute video. Drive by the house with posters & balloons: Decorate your car with posters & balloons & have all your siblings drive by your mom’s house for a mini parade. Send her flowers: Call your local florist if they’re delivering & pick out some springtime buds for your mom.

Host a book club: If your mom is a reader, she’ll love a book club. Pick up a couple copies of a book that’s been on your mom’s reading list, and have your family read it. Then call her on Zoom or FaceTime & have a nice chat about the book. Make a mimosa bar: Mimosas don’t just have to be an out-to-eat treat. Pop the bubbly, add orange juice, mango juice or papaya juice, then garnish with fruits like raspberries or strawberries. Deliver all the makings to your mom along with a cute champagne flute. You can even enjoy with her via FaceTime or Zoom. Help her in the garden: Surprise her by planting flowers for her this year. Not near your mom this year? Deliver her favorite seeds to plant or some new gardening tools. Send a custom gift: Customize a coffee mug, tote bag or a blanket with a meaningful sentiment or photo. Sweet treats & sentiments: Prepare a jar of mom’s favorite candies wrapped in pieces of paper that have loving sentiments written on them. Charming memories: Begin a charm bracelet tradition by purchasing a charm bracelet & a new charm each year that represents a meaningful memory you both shared. Mother’s Day gift ideas should come from the heart & can show mothers near & far how much they are appreciated & loved.

3 Tips To Planning Efficient Home-Cooked Meals A few generations ago, dining out was an experience reserved for special occasions. However, until recently, when restaurants were shuttered in the wake of the public health crisis prompted by the spread of COVID-19, many people were dining out multiple times a week. Hospitality solutions provider, Fourth surveyed 1,000 American adults in 2019 & 56% reported dining out at least 2-3 times per week. Ten percent said they ate out 4-6 times each week, while 6% said they dined out every day. People accustomed to relying on restaurants for meals multiple times per week may be unaccustomed to cooking many meals at home, which has become the norm thanks to restrictions placed on restaurants as part of COVID-19 social distancing precautions. Learning how to shop for food & prepare items by maximizing available ingredients can reduce trips to the store & help people reduce food waste at a time when food is not as readily available as it once was. 1. Plan meals/browse circulars: Meal planning & shopping lists are vital tools for people preparing meals at home. Without doing so, individuals can be left floundering in the supermarket, spending more money than necessary & making impulse purchases. Use sales circulars to browse weekly discounted items at stores. Build a week’s worth of meals off of these sale items, then fill in any extra ingredients or staples needed on a shopping list. Leave a day or two for leftovers. Try organizing the list to follow the natural layout in the store. 2. Shop smart: With paper & pen in hand or a digital list compiled on your phone, go aisle by aisle & check off items as they are added to the cart. If you are shopping for food you hope will last a week or more, consider substituting canned & frozen foods & other nonperishables for fresh items because they can be stored longer. 3. Minimize waste: Cook only as much as is needed for the household. Generally speaking, a meat or poultry serving of 3-4 ounces per person is adequate. That means a roast or steak of 1.5-2 lbs is fine for a family of four. Use up older frozen or perishable foods first. Store foods properly & use them before the use-by date. Wrap up leftovers & turn them into new meals. When visiting the grocery store, be sure to wear a mask & follow all recommended safety precautions. Take advantage of senior hours offered by many stores. With proper planning & smart thinking, homecooking can be more efficient & less wasteful

Gardening is beneficial in various ways. The AARP states that some health perks associated with gardening include improved mood, increased vitamin D levels (which benefits bones & immune system) & reduced risk of dementia. In addition, if gardening efforts include growing herbs, fruits & vegetables, it can be a cost-effective way to eat healthy. For gardeners without sufficient space or for those with mobility issues, container gardening can be an ideal way to grow everything from flowers to vegetables. Better Homes & Gardens says most plants are not fussy about the containers in which they grow so long as some of their basic needs are met. This means watering correctly for the type of plant, & ensuring sufficient drainage. The following are some other ways container gardening efforts can prove successful. • Watch water. Planet Natural Research Center says plants with thin leaves typically need ample water, & plants with thick leaves need less. Use this as a guideline to gauge water needs. • Size correctly. Plants should be sized to the container. Consider dwarf varieties of certain plants if your containers are small. • Choose the right soil. Fill containers with a commercial potting soil rather than soil from the garden. Garden soil can dry into a solid mass, while commercial mixtures have amendments like peat moss, vermiculite, compost, & other ingredients to help with soil texture & moisture retention. • Mix it up. When planting containers of flowers & other greenery, Good Housekeeping says to include “a thriller, a spiller & a filler” as a good rule of thumb. The thriller is the focal point, the spiller a trailing plant, & a filler has smaller leaves or flowers to add bulk & color. • Poke holes. Drainage holes are essential so that soil will not become waterlogged. Holes don’t need to be large, but there should be enough of them so that excess water can drain out readily. • Select the right container material. Container materials may be affected by gardeners’ budgets, personal taste & other factors. For those who live in hot climates, selecting a light-colored container can help prevent further soil heat absorption. Container gardening is a healthy & enjoyable activity that can pay dividends in various ways.
Why Is The Poppy A Symbol Of Memorial Day?
In the war-torn battlefields of Europe, the common red field poppy was one of the first plants to reappear. Its seeds scattered in the wind & sat dormant in the ground, only germinating when the ground was disturbed-as it was by the very brutal fighting of World War 1. John McCrae, a Canadian soldier & physician, witnessed the war first hand & was inspired to write the nowfamous poem “In Flanders Fields” in 1915. (See below for the poem.) He saw the poppies scattered throughout the battlefield surrounding his artillery position in Belgium. BELVIDERE The Poppy Lady - In November 1918, days before the official end of the war, an American professor named Moina Michael wrote her own poem, “We Shall Keep the Faith,” which was inspired by McCrae’s “In Flanders HARDWARE Fields.”In her poem (also shown below), she mentioned wearing the “poppy red” to honor the dead, & with that, Open Monday-Friday 7 am - 6 pm Saturday 7:30 am - 5 pm • Closed Sundays the tradition of adorning one’s clothing with a single red poppy in remembrance of those killed in the Great War Corner of Main & Meadow How Can was born. WANTED GOLD & SILVER Bring In Your Gold, Silver, Platinum, Watches, Coins & Jewelry Too. Find Out How Valuable It Really Is.
You’ve made the decision to make a move & sell your house. Now what? Get ready to put your “best foot forward” and add some curb appeal. Here are some tips to draw in buyers & get it sold. 1. Make sure the lawn is mowed & the weeds & dead leaves are gone. If you keep up on it, it will just get easier. 2. Add a flower pot or a trio of hanging baskets to the front porch. It doesn’t have to be expensive. Even one hanging basket looks fresh. 3. Make the front door stand out! Paint is inexpensive & most owners can do it themselves. 4. Makeover your mailbox. Add something more stylish. 5. Add some front door decor. A wreath can be a year-round item with something simple & elegant. 6. Update or add house numbers. Some buyers like the numeric game & could be drawn to your home based on the address alone! One or more of these tips can give your home a little extra pizzazz. And remember to clean, sweep & power wash if needed! Your home will win out over others & you can be on your way! Considering buying or selling? How To Find The Right Bike Helmet Cycling is a great way to get necessary exercise in an environmentally friendly way, all while enjoying the great outdoors. Safety should be a priority when cycling, and helmets are an essential component of cycling safety. The American Assoc. of Neurological Surgeons says cycling is the single largest contributor to head injuries treated in American hospital emergency rooms. The Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute advises that almost three-quarters of fatal crashes in 2018 involved a head injury. Nearly all cyclists who died were not wearing a helmet. The first step toward safety is selecting a helmet especially designed for cycling, as there also are helmets geared for kayaking, rock climbing, skiing, & skateboarding. Consumer Reports suggests evaluating helmets on key features: Ventilation, fit adjustments, ease of use, & impact injury prevention. A helmet that is not properly fitted or comfortable cannot do its job effectively, especially if it prompts a rider not to wear it. Riders can research Consumer Reports ratings & look for helmets that meet Consumer Product Safety Commission standards. Helmets sold in the U.S. are typically CPSC-endorsed. The following are some features cyclists should consider before buying bike helmets. • Size: High-end helmets tend to come in multiple sizes that offer a secure & comfortable fit. Many other helmets have a universal sizing ring that fits a wide array of head sizes, according to Eastern Mountain Sports. • Style: Helmets come in different shapes & styles. Experiment with helmet shapes to find a style that fits the shape of your own head well. • Placement: The helmet should be worn horizontally on the head, & shouldn’t be tipped forward or backward. Experts say the front rim should end around an inch above the eyebrows. The helmet should not be too tight, yet not loose enough to move around easily.

• Extra safety: Doctors now know that something called rotational forces can contribute to brain injury. This means there is a violent stopping that causes the head to be interrupted out of synchrony with the movement of the neck, torso and other lower limbs. Multi-directional Impact Protection System, WaveCel & Shearing Pads Inside (SPIN) technology help address rotational forces.
