SENIOR LIVING Parkinson’s Disease: Recognize Early Onset Symptoms Parkinson’s disease is a neurological movement disorder. Classic motor symptoms, such as tremor, rigidity & extreme slowness of movements & reflexes, called bradykinesia, are typically used to identify Parkinson’s. However, identification of other, more subtle symptoms may help identify the disease years before more obvious motor conditions present themselves. Since Parkinson’s is a chronic & progressive neurological disease, symptoms are often mild at the onset, becoming more severe over time. Initial symptoms may be so subtle that they’re even difficult for specialists to detect, according to the The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. Symptoms also may be different for some patients than others & may progress at different paces. Dopamine loss is a major contributor to the onset of Parkinson’s disease. Dopamine controls movement & mood, so when dopamine is affected, walking, talking & writing can be impacted. Depression or anxiety may accompany other symptoms. Parkinson’s disease affects as many as 500,000 people in the U.S. An early diagnosis may help improve quality of life & delay the onset of greater motor issues. Here’s what to look for and discuss with a doctor. • Micrographia & other handwriting issues occur. Those with Parkinson’s disease may start experiencing changes in their handwriting. Penmanship may look cramped, & letters tend to be smaller than normal (micrographia). Individuals may find it difficult to hold a pen & write. • Tremors take place in a limb. Tremors usually begin in the hands or fingers & may even mimic a pill-rolling technique, which is a tremor between the thumb & forefinger. Tremors usually occur when the limb is at rest. • Pace or activities slow down. Parkinson’s disease may reduce one’s ability to move & may slow down movements. An early symptom may be a noticeable slowing down in steps or ability to react to something, like a ball being thrown one’s way. Some people may drag their feet, shuffle as they walk or find it difficult to get up. • Loss of automatic movements & functions can occur. Difficulty with unconscious movements, such as blinking, smiling or even swinging arms, may occur when a person has Parkinson’s disease. Movements may be uncoordinated & stiff. Increased salivation & perspiration also may be indicators. • Poor balance & loss of posture may develop. People with Parkinson’s disease may hunch over more & more & be unable to stand up straight. Balance issues, such as falls or being able to tip over more easily, may occur. • Speech can change. Changes in speech can begin, including hesitating before speaking, slurring words or speaking in a monotone voice. • Others may notice a masked face. This describes a vacant or fixed stare & lack of facial animation. • Sleep issues may increase. Parkinson’s disease can affect sleeping patterns & behaviors. People with Parkinson’s may experience vivid dreams & nightmares, as well as an inability to stay asleep. Parkinson’s disease is rare, & symptoms that mimic those of Parkinson’s may be caused by other conditions. As winter slowly winds down, many gardeners cannot wait to soak up the springtime sun & get their hands dirty in the garden. Such excitement is not just good for gardeners, but can benefit the garden in the months to come as well. Early spring is a great time to get a head start on the gardening season. Even if gardening season is still around the corner, completing the following projects can ensure your garden gets off on the right foot. Clear debris - One of the best things you can do for your garden as winter winds down is to clear it of debris. Winter can be especially harsh on a landscape, & gardens left to the elements are often filled with debris once spring arrives. Dead leaves, fallen branches, rocks that surfaced during the winter frost, & even garbage that might have blown about in winter winds can all pile up in a garden over a typical winter. Clearing such debris likely won’t take long, but it’s a great first step toward restoring the garden before the time comes to plant & grow the garden once again. Examine the soil - Soil plays a significant role in whether a garden thrives or struggles. Examining the soil before the season starts can help gardeners address any issues before they plant. Ignoring the soil until a problem arises can turn the upcoming gardening season into a lost opportunity, so test the soil to determine if it has any nutrient or mineral deficiencies. This may require the help of a professional, but if a problem arises, you might be able to adjust the acidity or alkalinity of the soil & still enjoy a successful gardening season. Another way to examine the soil is less complex but can shed light on when would be a good time to get back to work. Reach into the soil & dig out a handful. If the soil quickly crumbles, you can start preparing for gardening season. If the soil is still clumped together, it needs more time to dry out before you can begin your prep work. Initiate edging - Edging is another task gardeners can begin as they get ready for the season. Edge plant & flower beds, but be sure to use a spade with a flat blade or an edger designed to edge flower beds. Such tools will cut deep enough so grass roots that may eventually grow into the flower bed are severed. Depending on how large a garden is, edging can be a time-consuming task, so getting a head start allows homeowners to spend more time planting & tending to their gardens once the season hits full swing. Fight weeds - Though weeds likely have not survived the winter, that does not mean they won’t return once the weather starts to heat up. But as inevitable as weeds may seem, homeowners can take steps to prevent them from turning beautiful gardens into battlegrounds where plants, flowers & vegetables are pitted against unsightly & potentially harmful weeds. Spring is a good time to apply a pre-emergent weed preventer, which can stop weeds before they grow. Such solutions are not always foolproof, but can drastically reduce weed growth. Spring showers certainly may bring flower laters on, but they also contribute to challenging driving conditions. Early spring weather can be fickle, vacillating between dry, wet & even icy conditions. Drivers need to remain on their toes to safely traverse roadways near & far. Wet roadways & poor driving conditions contribute to thousands of road accidents each & every year. As roads get wet, oil & other substances rise to the surface of the pavement, which can quickly become slippery & compromise the traction offered by tires. According to the United States Department of Transportation, there are around 707,000 automobile crashes each year due to rain. Heavy rains also may lead to puddles, which can obscure hazards on the roadway. Cars may stall out in puddles or hydroplane, which occurs when cars coast along the surface of the water. Puddles also can be splashed by oncoming cars, leading to visibility issues. It is in every driver’s best interest to use caution when driving on wet roads. The following tips can help prevent accidents, injuries & even fatalities during the rainy season. • Slow down. Drivers should drive slower when roads are wet & when rain compromises visibility. It can take up to three times longer to stop on a wet road than a dry one. By slowing down you will be able to stop or veer out of the way of danger. • Leave room. When driving on wet roads, leave more room between your vehicle & the one in front of you. Again, this plays into stopping distance. Tailgating increases your risk of rear-ending a vehicle on a wet roadway. • Stay alert. It can be easy to be lulled into complacency while driving. But staying alert & conscious of every detail going on around you can reduce your risk of accident when driving in less than ideal conditions. • Skip cruise control. As a driver, you want to remain in control of acceleration and speed, rather than leaving it up to the cruise control system. If you begin to hydroplane on cruise control, the car may actually speed up. • Use your headlights. Headlights can light up the road in front of you, helping illuminate potential hazards. Lights on a car also make your vehicle more visible to others. Always turn on the headlights in inclement weather. • Avoid jerky movements. Keep a steady pace and the vehicle in control. Jerking the wheel or accelerating & braking in a erratic fashion can cause the vehicle to spin out or skid on wet roads. • Check your tires. Inspect your tires for tread wear and air pressure.
