The Season Of Lent & Easter Spring is eagerly anticipated, as many people look forward to enjoying the great outdoors once more. Spring is also a special time of year for practicing Christians. Beginning on Ash Wednesday and lasting 40 weekdays until the arrival of Easter Sunday, the Lenten season is a very important time of year for Christians. During Lent, Christians prepare for Easter by observing a period of fasting, repentance, self-denial, and spiritual discipline. While the Bible does not reference Lent, the practice of observing Lent has become a standard. The following focuses on each of the special days of this church season as they pertain to Western Christianity (Eastern Orthodox churches observe Lent somewhat differently). Ash Wednesday - The Day of Ashes commemorates the repentance of sin. On Ash Wednesday, Christians have ashes placed on their foreheads in the shape of a cross in recognition of their need to repent. Many churches host Ash Wednesday services, and those who receive the ashes are not only reminded of their mortality and sinfulness, but also of the opportunity for absolution. Christians typically fast on Ash Wednesday, though some simply abstain from eating meat. Palm Sunday - On what is now called “Palm Sunday,” Jesus Christ rode a donkey into Jerusalem while villagers welcomed him and waved palm branches. This is mentioned in each of the Biblical Gospels and occurs a week before His subsequent resurrection. Jesus possibly rode a donkey rather than a horse as a sign of peace, as a war-waging king might ride a horse. The “Passion of the Christ” is typically read during Palm Sunday masses. Holy Thursday - Holy Thursday is sometimes referred to as “Covenant Thursday,” “Maundy Thursday” or “Thursday of Mysteries.” Holy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the apostles. According to Catholic News Agency, Holy Thursday might be one of the most important, complex and profound days of celebration in the Catholic Church. Holy Thursday celebrates the institution of the Eucharist as the true body and blood of Jesus Christ and the institution of the sacrament of the priesthood. Good Friday - Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Jesus was condemned by his peers as King Herod and Pontius Pilate had found him not guilty of his crimes. But crowds were enraged, and Pilate reluctantly ordered his crucifixion rather than face a mass riot. Holy Saturday - Holy Saturday marks the final day of the Triduum, or the three days preceding Easter Sunday. Scripture states that Holy Saturday was when Jesus’ body was placed in the tomb. Easter Sunday - April 16th. A festive and celebratory day for Christians, Easter Sunday is a time for sharing the good news of Jesus’ resurrection. His body is discovered missing from the tomb, and Jesus appears to his followers again showing proof that He is alive. Typically, Easter Sunday is one of the most well-attended Sunday services for Christians. It also is a day to spend with family, and many families share large meals to mark the end of the Lenten season. Celebrate Holy Week with our area churches. Your Tendonitis Really Isn’t Tendonitis Josh Meyers, PT, DPT, OCS is the Regional Director for Belvidere Physical Therapy & Poplar Grove Physical Therapy clinics.
All Too Common - Tendonitis, the medical term for inflammation of a tendon, is all-too-common today. People suffer from many forms of tendonitis, ranging from runner’s knees, golfer’s elbows & tennis elbows, to Achilles’ tendonitis & plantar fasciitis. All of these conditions are forms of tendonitis. Tendonitis is usually the first diagnosis to come to mind when something hurts & the most likely diagnosis patients will receive from their doctors. It is also the reason that the use of anti-inflammatory medication is so prevalent in our country. This data begs a question. If tendonitis is that common, & anti-inflammatory medication, the leading treatment for tendonitis, is readily available in most households, why are so many people still in pain? The reason is not the wrong treatment it’s the wrong diagnosis. The Right Diagnosis - When the medical community talks about inflammation, words like pain, swelling, redness & heat come to mind. These normal signs of inflammation are triggered by one’s body to help a person recover from a recent injury. With tendonitis, pain & swelling occur to protect the injured area, & the increased blood flow that the body uses to heal injured tissue causes redness & heat. With any injury, these initial signs of inflammation are good; they mean that the tissue is alive, responding to stress & capable of healing. Here’s the problem. Pain is also present with the absence of this inflammatory activity. If no swelling, redness, or heat occur, there is no inflammation present. Tendon pain is present in these conditions due to impaired blood flow & a deterioration of tendon tissue. The tissue is just not healthy & probably hasn’t been for some time. This condition represents the opposite of tendonitis. The tissue is essentially dying & the medical field calls this tendinosis. This distinction between tendonitis & tendinosis is the foundational difference between the right & wrong diagnosis, the right & wrong treatment. “It Just Started to Hurt” - The most common words medical providers hear when they ask patients with tendinosis about their pain are, “I don’t know what happened. It just started to hurt.” Patients rarely recall a specific incident or event that caused their injury & most describe a gradual worsening of their symptoms over a period of weeks or months. Despite attempts at rest, ice & the use of anti-inflammatory medication, many patients still find themselves trapped in a continuous cycle of pain. That description in itself is enough to make a diagnosis of tendinosis, but a physical examination usually reveals something more interesting. “I Just Work Through the Pain” - Patients don’t typically have significant deficits with the strength or flexibility of an injured area. They can usually do many of the activities they want to do, although they suffer through pain while doing so. When pain levels are low to moderate, patients often will continue to work through pain, placing excessive stress on a tendon & causing breakdown of tissue that occurs more quickly than the body can repair. When pain levels are higher, patients will start to exhibit patterns of compensation, or “favoring” that causes weakening of tissue as well. Either way, tendinosis develops as a result of continued, excessive stress on tissue by harmful mechanics. To break this cycle & allow healing to begin, medical providers need to help patients eliminate harmful stress & create a healthy environment for the tendon. The Right Treatment - The treatment of tendonitis is simple. Patients rest, take anti-inflammatory medication, & wait for their symptoms to go away. Treatment is usually that simple & also the primary reason that physical therapists don’t see many patients in the clinic with painful conditions caused by acute inflammation. People know how to treat themselves. The treatment of tendinosis, however, is exactly the opposite. It encourages activity, stimulates inflammation, & educates patients on how to play an active role in managing their symptoms. More Rest Is Not the Answer - While patients with tendonitis may rest to alleviate their symptoms, patients with tendinosis actually need to stress their tendons to become healthier. Physical therapists guide patients in this process by performing intentional, therapeutic exercise in order to introduce healthy stress to a painful tendon. This stress is applied gradually & with an intensity that the tendon can handle. As the tendon heals, pain levels decrease & activity tolerance of the tendon grows to a level so patients can resume normal activity without pain. Inflammation is Okay - Circulation needs to be addressed as well. While patients with tendonitis take medication to decrease inflammation & blood flow, physical therapists treat patients with tendinosis by actually performing interventions to increase inflammation. The resulting blood flow is essential to tissue healing & needs to be artificially produced if the body does not produce it on its own. Deep tissue massage is a start, but more aggressive techniques that use tools (i.e. ASTYM) are even more effective. Stretching exercises & movements to keep muscles & tendons “warmed-up” throughout the day also increase circulation & stimulate healing. Deciding when it is no longer a safe option to drive, is often a hard & difficult decision to make for many seniors. On one hand, driving is a way of maintaining independence, most seniors have been driving for such a long time & it is a tough pill to swallow to admit that one should probably not get behind the wheel any longer. Driving allows seniors to visit with family & friends, be able to grocery shop on their own, & continue to do the things that they always have done for themselves. Giving up driving can be seen as giving up freedom. On the other hand, continuing to drive at an age where reaction time decreases & confusion increases, is not always a safe option. Traffic citations, minor traffic accidents, & forgetting where your destination is, can be signs that it might be time to stop driving. Not to mention, vision & hearing declines with age, which can also affect one’s driving ability. More than likely, a senior will not throw just their hands up and say, “I am done driving” on their own. Usually children & grandchildren have to make the suggestion & do some persuading. A good rule of thumb is, if you feel unsafe riding with a person, or if you would not trust your children riding with a person, maybe they shouldn’t be driving. Putting other lives at risk on the roadway is never a good scenario. Adult children of seniors should also keep an eye on the condition of the vehicle. Are there dents or scratches that have appeared? Many doctor’s offices & rehab facilities offer driving evaluations. This may be a good indicator as to driving ability & whether it is still safe to be operating a vehicle. Another good resource is to have hearing & eye sight checked to make sure prescriptions are accurate & hearing is at its greatest potential. There are great resources in the area that allow seniors to maintain their independence by providing transportation to doctor appointments and shopping trips. The Boone County Council on Aging offers a great transportation service to area seniors for very minimal cost.
Avoid Aches & Pains When Gardening People who have not spent much time in a garden may not consider this rewarding hobby much of a threat to their health. But as veteran gardeners can attest, gardening can contribute to nagging aches & pains that can force even the most ardent green-thumbers indoors. Gardening is a physical activity that, despite its peaceful nature, can be demanding on the body. Thankfully, there are several ways that gardening enthusiasts can prevent the aches & pains that can sometimes pop up after long days in the garden. • Use ergonomic gardening tools. What Is Parkinson’s Disease?
Though millions of people across the globe are living with Parkinson’s disease, many people have limited knowledge of this disorder. The extent of many people’s experience with or knowledge of Parkinson’s disease begins & ends with Muhammad Ali & Michael J. Fox, two high-profile personalities who have publicly acknowledged their fight against this debilitating disorder. As much as Ali & Fox have done to bring awareness to Parkinson’s disease, the disorder largely remains a mystery, even to those medical researchers who have devoted their lives to finding a cause & a cure for Parkinson’s. But there are some things the medical community does know about Parkinson’s, & a greater understanding of this disease might help find a cause once & for all.

What is Parkinson’s disease? Parkinson’s is a chronic & progressive movement disorder, which means the symptoms will continue & worsen over time. Parkinson’s involves the malfunction & death of nerve cells in the brain known as neurons. Some of these neurons are responsible for producing dopamine, a chemical that sends messages to the part of the brain that controls movement & coordination. As it progresses, less dopamine is produced, making it more difficult for a person with Parkinson’s to control his or her body’s movements.

What are some symptoms of Parkinson’s? Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease vary from individual to individual, but the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation notes that the primary motor signs of Parkinson’s include: tremor of the hands, arms, legs, jaw, & face; bradykinesia, or slowness of movement; rigidity or stiffness of the limbs & trunk; postural instability or impaired balance & coordination. Parkinson’s progresses slowly, & a person might begin to feel somewhat weak & notice slight tremors. These tremors gradually progress to additional symptoms. For example, a person might notice their voluntary movements, such as walking or even rolling over in bed, have become slower. Other symptoms include difficulty rising from sitting or, in later stages, difficulty swallowing.

Are there any known causes of Parkinson’s disease? There is no known cause for Parkinson’s disease, but scientists are exploring a potential relationship between the loss of cells in other areas of the brain & body & Parkinson’s disease. According to the PDF, scientists have discovered that signs of Parkinson’s disease have been found not only in the mid-brain but also in the brain stem & the olfactory bulb.

BJT 2017 Season Registration Football/Pom/Cheer WHO CAN PLAY: You must be 7 years old on or before August 1, 2017 and cannot turn 14 between August 1, 2017 and November 1, 2017. There are 3 Divisions. All divisions have weight limits for ball carriers. If over weight limit, players will be limited to offensive or defensive line. 7-8 Fly Weight 115 lbs., 9-10 Light Weight - 130 lbs., 11-13 Heavy Weight - 160 lbs. REGISTRATION WILL BE HELD ON: Wednesday, April 12th, 6-8 PM & Saturday, April 22nd, 9 AM - Noon at the Community Building. There will be a $10 late fee for registrations after April 22nd. MANDATORY PARENT MEETING: There will be a mandatory Parents Meeting where you will receive your raffle tickets. Date to be announced. COST: The cost to register for the first & second child is $185/Child for Football (keep jersey with name on it); $125 for Poms & $160 for Cheer (optional Competitive Cheer additional $100). Third child in the family & any after, cost per child will be $40. Each participant will receive raffle tickets that they may choose to sell at $2 each. All money sold from tickets is yours to keep.
