SPRING EDITION 2018 Cheerleaders Compete in State Finals The North Boone Varsity Cheerleading Team had another incredible year. They placed seventh in the State Competition this year. This is the second year in a row that the team has qualified for the State Competition. The members are: Kylie Nelson, Hannah Underwood, Jenna Shattuck, Emma Blasinski, Miranda Wagner, Jonah Brunschon, Olivia Topping, Alexis Seabaugh, and they were coached by Krystal Jole and Kim Crull.
Congratulations On Another Outstanding Year! Manchester Shoe Drive Manchester has been learning and practicing character traits this year through the Manchester Manners Matter program. During the month of February, the school focused on showing kindness. The Rockford IceHogs along with Easter Seals came to visit early in the month to work with the students on bullying. They helped our students understand more about bullying, how it is unkind, and how we can show kindness everyone. Also during the month, Manchester School hosted a Cinderella Shoe drive to provide new and gently used shoes for those in need. We were hoping to collect 100 pairs. That goal was not only met but exceeded with a collection of 189 total pairs. The shoes were donated to the Rockford area charity, Rock House Kids. We are so proud of all the kindness that is being shown at Manchester!
Capron Celebrates Dr. Seuss Day On Friday, March 2nd, students at Capron Elementary celebrated Dr. Seuss Day. Students and staff participated in several activities during the morning, each related to Dr. Seuss, his life, and his many wonderful stories. Students in Kindergarten through 4th grade were divided into multi-grade groups that encouraged collaboration and cooperation between the older and younger students. This also gave students the opportunity to work with children from different classes and age groups that they may not see during a typical school day. Three stories were read to students and each were followed by an interactive activity. The first story was Imagine That. With this story, students participated in a STEM challenge to build the tallest hat. The next story was The Lorax. The activity with this story was to create their own mustaches with yarn and popsicle sticks. The Last story was, What pet should I get? Students created their own new animal pets in puppet form. Lots of fun and learning was experienced by all!

SPRING EDITION 2018 Spread The Word To End The Word The North Boone Middle School students participated in the Spread the Word to End the Word activities during the week of March 5-9, 2018. The Spread the Word to End the Word movement was created to end the demeaning use of the “R-word”. Throughout this week, students participated in a variety of activities including Special Olympics trivia, a kindness selfie station and students and staff signed a banner pledging to end the word. Friday, March 9th was the culminating activity for the week. We had an assembly with multiple guest speakers, including Steve Freeman, Global Ambassador for the Special Olympics, and Scott Freeman, his older brother. Our final speaker was Amy Dalke who read Welcome to Holland, an inspirational story. Thank you to Mrs. Cari Weiffenbach, Mrs. Ashley Boyer, Miss Kassie Bowman and all of the students and staff at the Middle School for making this week memorable and successful. We are hopeful that moving forward we can lose that word and all other insensitive and derogatory words from our vocabularies.

Below is the info for registering your kindergartner To attend kindergarten, students must be five years of age or older on or before September 1. This early registration process gives parents information to ease the transition into kindergarten and assists the District in planning for enrollment growth and staffing needs. Please take advantage of this opportunity to register your child! To participate in Kindergarten registration, parents should first fill out a registration form with basic information regarding their child. This document should be completed, printed from the district website at (www.nbcusd.org) and brought to the school. Completing these forms in advance will expedite the process at the school. There will also be copies at the school. Parents will be asked to present the following original documents, as well as copies of the following documents, to finalize the registration process. Please bring these documents with you to the school: Certified Copy of Birth Certificate • Social Security Card • Immunization Records • Proof of Residency • Registration Fees Parents should allow approximately 45 minutes to an hour to complete the registration process, though the amount of time could vary depending upon the number of students being registered. Information about Kindergarten Parent Orientation, Meet the Teacher Night, school supply lists and additional pertinent information about your child’s school will be shared. Please refer to the district website for additional school registration information.
North Boone Abates Taxes & Reduced Student Fees The North Boone School Board is continuing the planned abatements with grant money that was paid back to the district but has also made efforts for an additional abatement to further reduce the bond levy in an attempt to stabilize taxes for the community. At the March meeting, the School Board reduced student fees for the 2018-2019 school year. Each school year, registration fees are charged for items that are directly consumed or used by students. This can include but is not limited to consumable materials, supplies, or rental of textbooks. For students in grades PreK-8th grade registration fees for 2018-2019 will be $75 per student & students in grades 9-12 the fees will be $125 per student. Any family that registers during the July 26th or August 1st registration & pays in full with receive a $25 discount per child. Please refer to the website for additional information in regards to student fees.

Preparing Garden Beds For Spring & Beyond Gardening enthusiasts may have been thinking about their landscape plans throughout the winter, eager to once again get their hands dirty with soil. Whether a home gardener is making preparations for edible crops or beautiful flowers, he or she must take time to make the soil amenable to planting. To establish hearty, durable plants, gardeners can focus on three main areas: Addressing soil composition, cultivating & adding nutrients. Soil composition - Many gardeners prefer growing a variety of plants in their gardens. Such an approach requires taking inventory of the type of soil in one’s garden & making the necessary modifications so that the types of vegetables, herbs, shrubs, or flowers that will be planted can grow in strongly. In fact, according to the plant company Proven Winners, the most important step to developing good roots is preparing the soil. Take a sample of the soil & examine it to see what is present. If the soil is too full of clay, too sandy, too dense, or too loose, that can lead to problems where plants cannot grow in strong. Work with a garden center to add the right soil amendments to make a rich soil. This may include organic compost or manure to add nutrients to the soil. Cultivation - Cultivating the soil can involve different steps. Removal of weeds, errant rocks, roots, & other items will help prepare the soil. Mother Earth News suggests working on garden soil when the soil is damp but never wet; otherwise, garden soil can become messy & clumpy. Use a digging fork or shovel to lightly turn the soil when it’s mostly dry. Gentle tilling also can open up the soil to incorporate the nutritional amendments & relieve compaction that likely occurred from freezing temps & snow pressure. Tilling also helps with drainage & oxygen delivery to roots. The DIY Network suggests turning over soil at a depth of 12 inches to work the soil - about the length of a shovel spade. However, the resource Earth Easy says that existing garden beds have a complex soil ecosystem & simply top-dressing with compost or manure can be enough preparation for planting. Gardeners can experiment with the methods that work best for their gardens. Nutrition - Testing the pH & the levels of certain nutrients in the soil, namely nitrogen, phosphorous & potassium, will give gardeners an idea of other soil additions that may be needed. Soils with a pH below 6.2 often can benefit from the addition of lime several weeks before planting. Soil tests will determine just how much fertilizer to add to the soil. Complete fertilizers will have equal amounts of nitrogen, phosphorous & potassium. Individual fertilizers can amend the soil with only these nutritional elements that are needed. Top-dressing empty beds with a layer of mulch or compost can prevent weed growth & preserve moisture until it is time to plant. If existing shrubs or plants are in garden beds, use more care so as not to disturb roots or dig too deeply. Preparing garden beds takes some effort initially, but can be well worth the work when you plants flourish.

April Is Parkinson’s Awareness Month 10 Early Signs Of Parkinson’s Disease It can be hard to tell if you or a loved one has Parkinson’s disease (PD). Below are 10 signs that you might have the disease. No single one of these signs means that you should worry, but if you have more than one sign you should consider making an appointment to talk to your doctor. Tremor - Have you noticed a slight shaking or tremor in your finger, thumb, hand or chin? A tremor while at rest is a common early sign of Parkinson’s disease. What is normal? Shaking can be normal after lots of exercise, if you are stressed or if you have been injured. Shaking could also be caused by a medicine you take. Small Handwriting - Has your handwriting gotten much smaller than it was in the past? You may notice the way you write words on a page has changed, such as letter sizes are smaller and the words are crowded together. A change in handwriting may be a sign of Parkinson’s disease called micrographia. What is normal? Sometimes writing can change as you get older, if you have stiff hands or fingers or poor vision. Loss of Smell - Have you noticed you no longer smell certain foods very well? If you seem to have more trouble smelling foods like bananas, dill pickles or licorice, you should ask your doctor. What is normal? Your sense of smell can be changed by a cold, flu or a stuffy nose, but it should come back when you are better. Trouble Sleeping - Do you thrash around in bed or act out dreams when you are deeply asleep? Sometimes, your spouse will notice or will want to move to another bed. Sudden movements during sleep may be a sign of Parkinson’s disease. What is normal? It is normal for everyone to have a night when they ‘toss & turn’. Similarly, quick jerks of the body when initiation sleep or when in lighter sleep are common & often normal. Trouble Moving or Walking - Do you feel stiff in your body, arms or legs? Have others noticed that your arms don’t swing like they used to when you walk? Sometimes stiffness goes away as you move. If it does not, it can be a sign of Parkinson’s disease. An early sign might be stiffness or pain in your shoulder or hips. People sometimes say their feet seem “stuck to the floor.� What is normal? If you have injured your arm or shoulder, you may not be able to use it as well until it is healed, or another illness like arthritis might cause the same symptom.

Constipation - Do you have trouble moving your bowels without straining every day? Straining to move your bowels can be an early sign of Parkinson’s disease & you should talk to your doctor. What is normal? If you do not have enough water or fiber in your diet, it can cause problems in the bathroom. Also, some medicines, especially those used for pain, will cause constipation. If there is no other reason such as diet or medicine that would cause you to have trouble moving your bowels, you should speak with your doctor. A Soft or Low Voice - Have other people told you that your voice is very soft or that you sound hoarse? If there has been a change in your voice you should see your doctor about whether it could be Parkinson’s disease. Sometimes you might think other people are losing their hearing, when really you are speaking more softly. What is normal? A chest cold or other virus can cause your voice to sound different, but you should go back to sounding the same when you get over your cough or cold. Masked Face - Have you been told that you have a serious, depressed or mad look on your face, even when you are not in a bad mood? This is often called facial masking. If so, you should ask your doctor about Parkinson’s disease. What is normal? Some medicines can cause you to have the same type of serious or staring look, but you would go back to the way you were after you stopped the medication. Dizziness or Fainting - Do you notice that you often feel dizzy when you stand up out of a chair? Feeling dizzy or fainting can be a sign of low blood pressure & can be linked to Parkinson’s disease (PD). What is normal? Everyone has had a time when they stood up & felt dizzy, but if it happens regularly you should see your doctor.
