Breast Cancer Signs & Symptoms Breast cancer is a formidable foe. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 627,000 women lost their lives to breast cancer in 2018. But women are not helpless in the fight against breast cancer, as the WHO notes early detection is critical & could potentially save thousands of lives each year. A proactive approach is a key component of protecting oneself against breast cancer. While the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.® notes that many breast cancer symptoms are invisible & not noticeable without a professional cancer screening, women can keep an eye out for certain signs of breast cancer they might be able to detect on their own. Monthly self-exams can help women more easily identify changes in their breasts. During such self-exams, women can look for the following signs & symptoms & are advised to report any abnormalities they discover to their physicians immediately. • Changes in how the breast or nipple feels: The NBCF says nipple tenderness or a lump or thickening in or near the breast or underarm could indicate the presence of breast cancer. Some women may notice changes in the skin texture or an enlargement of the pores in the skin of their breast. In many instances, skin texture has been described as being similar to the texture of an orange peel. Lumps in the breast also may indicate breast cancer, though not all lumps are cancerous. • Change in appearance of the breast or nipple: Unexplained changes in the size or shape of the breast; dimpling anywhere on the breast; unexplained swelling or shrinking of the breast, particularly when the shrinking or swelling is exclusive to one side only; & a nipple that is turned slightly inward or inverted are some signs & symptoms of breast cancer that can affect the appearance of the breast or nipple. It is common for women’s breasts to be asymmetrical, but sudden asymmetry should be brought to the attention of a physician. • Discharge from the nipple: The NBCF notes that any discharge from the nipple, but particularly a clear or bloody discharge, could be a sign of breast cancer. The NBCF also advises women that a milky discharge when they are not breast-feeding is not linked to breast cancer but should be discussed with a physician. Learning to recognize the signs & symptoms of breast cancer can increase the likelihood of early diagnosis, which greatly improves women’s chances of surviving this disease.

“Better Late Than Never” A Modern Dentistry Success Story Article Contributed By: Chapko & Shah Modern Dentistry Marjorie Nelson knows all too well what it feels like to search for the right dentist. Since the age of 19, Marjorie has needed a full set of dentures. But finding a dental professional able to help her feel secure about her teeth proved a huge challenge. That is, until she came to Modern Dentistry. Modern Dentistry, a dental partnership of Dr. James Chapko & Dr. Shefali Shah, is dedicated to exceptional dental care in Belvidere, Illinois. A member of the community since 1985, the partnership offers the highest level of general & cosmetic dentistry in the industry, while ensuring its patients experience unparalleled personal care. At 86, Marjorie came to Modern Dentistry for dental implants, an alternative to the dentures she had endured throughout her life. Having suffered the challenges of inconsistent care for years, she struggled with denture fit & their negative effects to her wellbeing until seeking change at Modern Dentistry. Stepping into the office, she had a sense of peace & security. She felt at home with the friendly staff & Dr. Shah who performed her surgeries. Marjorie received implants on her lower jaw and is very happy with the results. When asked how dental implants from Modern Dentistry changed her life, her response is clear: “I don’t have to worry about my teeth any longer while smiling or eating.” Marjorie says the feeling of security provided by implants has greatly improved her quality of life, & for her that is worth everything. So, are dental implants worth the time & investment? Marjorie exclaims,”Absolutely!” She also has some thoughts on the importance of choosing the right dentist for the procedure. For her, the choice comes down to a strong reputation & a good gut feeling when you’re in the office. Modern Dentistry fits all of her qualifications. Would Marjorie recommend Modern Dentistry? Without hesitation, she says, “Yes. From start to finish, Modern Dentistry was a good experience.” In fact, she wishes she chose dental implants sooner, but says, “Better late than never!” Marjorie’s experience is a testimony to the practice’s mission statement: “To uplift the dental care in our community & build lasting relationships through a compassionate team of professionals & an advanced treatment approach.” Whether considering routine dental care or implants, Modern Dentistry offers the expertise & personal commitment necessary to ensure confident smiles for all ages. Coin Collecting For Beginners Coin collecting, or numismatics, is the study & collection of ancient and/or modern currency. This currency is largely coins, but extends to paper money as well as tokens & other related objects of monetary significance or minted legal tender. Many people are drawn to numismatics because of the search for currency with anomalies. Coins with mint errors or currency that was circulated for limited times are rare & valuable. The ancient Chinese produced some of the first coins centuries ago, early Americans used tobacco, beaver skins & other items as currency. It wasn’t until coins came into circulation through foreign trade that they were introduced to America. Eventually, the U.S. produced its own coinage, & the U.S. Mint began production in 1793. Today, one does not have to be rich to collect coins. Many coin dealers sell coins for slightly higher than face value. Collector coins also can be purchased straight from the Mint. The U.S. Mint offers commemorative items & other coins for collectors. To learn more about coin collecting, enthusiasts can reference material from the world’s largest circulating library of numismatic material. Founded in 1891, the American Numismatic Assoc. is replete with info about coins & other currency. Specific information for young collectors, as well as those interested in viewing coin exhibits or taking courses, is available through the association website at www.money.org.

Choose To Stay Active Article Contributed By: Belvidere Family YMCA Hibernating for the winter sounds like a great idea as the cold weather sets in but if we do it will take a toll on our bodies. Chilly temperatures make our body want to slow down so we have to consciously choose to stay active. The easiest way to kick start a healthy habit is to create a goal. Your goal may be to do a physical activity a certain number of times a week, to lose a certain amount of body weight or to gain muscle mass. We recommend that you set an overall goal that can easily be broken down in to smaller, attainable parts so you can see your progress as time goes on. Once you set your goal, here are ways to move towards achieving it: Talk it Out: Tell a friend, someone at your church or in a social group what your wellness goal is & have them help hold you accountable. Reward Yourself: When you are setting a goal also set a reward for yourself. For example, if you complete your wellness activities three times a week for a month then go buy that new sweater you have had your eye on or treat yourself to a special dinner. Keep Track of It: Writing down or tracking progress on an app is a great way to see how far you’ve come. Your successes & hiccups will all be kept in one place which will help you track trends & see patterns that may need to be corrected. Be Kind to Yourself: Choosing healthy habits is a process. Occasionally, we will face setbacks & that’s perfectly okay. Don’t get down on yourself. Remember you have already passed the biggest hurdle of consciously choosing to start your own path to wellness. Once you set your goal find the right activity in order to be successful. Please consult a physician before you start any new physical regimen. Exercise at Home: Watching TV? Do some exercises during it! Walk or jog in place. Sit down in a chair & then stand back up. Try some squats. Do leg lifts while you are sitting. Use hand weights or even cans of soup. On Demand & YouTube are great options to pull up some at home guided workouts. Go for a Walk: If it isn’t slippery or blisteringly cold outside, bundle up & take a walk around the block. We recommend going during the day so that you can easily see the ground. If the weather is nastier or you don’t like being outside when it is chilly, we recommend finding a public place to walk like the Boone County Community Building Complex or the mall. You can even walk up & down the aisles at a local store & see what bargains you can find! Join a Wellness Facility: Wellness facilities are great ways to try out different types of activities. Use the work out machines, take an aqua aerobics class, swim laps, get involved in a fitness class. When you are part of a group or have people who are helping hold you accountable, you are more likely to stick with your routine or even try wellness activities that may normally be outside your comfort zone. Whatever your goal may be & whichever way you choose to reach it, staying active is key to a strong body & mind as we age. The Belvidere Family YMCA is a full service wellness facility featuring cardio & strength equipment, an 84 degree pool, dry sauna, gymnasium & fitness classes. The Y offers many types of memberships including open door scholarships, Silver Sneakers & Veteran discounts. Call 815-547-5307.

Millions of people cannot imagine life at home without their cats. Cats make wonderful pets, bringing their own unique personality into a home & providing companionship to their owners. As great as cats are, millions still enter animal shelters every year. According to the ASPCA, roughly half of the 6.5 million companion animals that enter United States animal shelters each year are cats. And while figures are thankfully on the decline, hundreds of thousands of those cats end up being euthanized. Local animal shelters are home to many cats that would make great pets. Boone County Animal Shelter is located at 4546 Squaw Prairie Rd, Belvidere. For info about adoption call 815-544-8497. Those who find cats to take home should make their home cat-friendly as possible. • Appliances pose safety risks. Open washing machines or dryers, particularly those with warm clothes inside, may be too tempting for cats to ignore. Homeowners may close the doors trapping cats inside, or even turn the appliances on without recognizing the cats are inside. Always keep doors to appliances closed. Paper shredders & work stations with lots of wires also pose a safety risk to cats, make sure these areas are inaccessible. • Watch how cats behave around cat flaps. While some cats may want the freedom a cat flap allows, others may be on edge around the cat flap. Let cats’ behavior dictate if you will keep the cat flap or not. • Watch how cats drink water. The presence of water near food may deter some cats from drinking enough fluids. That’s because cats naturally hunt for food & water separately. If you notice your cat is ignoring its water bowl, try placing it elsewhere in the home to ensure your cat gets enough fluids. • Provide high but safe resting places. Cats want to rest & observe their surroundings from on high. Don’t deter cats from resting in such places, but make sure they’re positioned in such a way that cats can safely get down when they want to. Cats make wonderful pets, particularly when welcomed into cat-friendly homes.

Though a transient lifestyle is something few people aspire to during much of their lives, come retirement, the idea of staying in a place for only a short time has more appeal. According to a 2014 study from the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies, 36% of baby boomers want to spend their retirements traveling. Many are succeeding in doing just that, as a study from the luxury travel network Virtuoso found that today’s seniors spent an average of just over $11,000 per year on travel. That was more than any other generation, highlighting just how much older adults like to get out & explore the world. Retirees who fear they cannot afford to travel can explore the various ways for seniors to cut costs & still satisfy their wanderlust during retirement. 1. Take advantage of age-related discounts. Many businesses that cater to travelers offer discounts to seniors. Car rental agencies, hotels, travel agencies, & cruise lines may offer direct discounts to customers 65 & older, while membership in organizations such as AAA & AARP may make seniors eligible for additional discounts. Discounts on lodging & airfare might net the biggest savings, but even discounts on various smaller expenses can add up to big savings. 2. Don’t overlook travel agencies. While many prospective travelers’ first instincts are now to visit various travel websites in an effort to find the most affordable trips, it’s important that travelers not overlook travel agencies when planning trips. Travel websites, though a valuable resource, only list the hotels & airlines that agree to be included on their sites. While many participate, some do not, & those that do not may instead work independent of travel websites or partner with travel agencies. Travel agencies have access to the latest information, & many specialize in certain countries, knowing all the attractions visitors to their countries want to see. Travel agencies may offer packages that include admissions to popular attractions, which can be more affordable than planning a trip a la carte. 3. Travel as part of a group. Group travel may not appeal to everyone, but it should appeal to older, budgetconscious travelers. Retirees who are uncomfortable driving at home will likely be even less comfortable driving in foreign countries where the rules of the road are not the same. Traveling in groups, whether it’s with a retirement community, religious organization or another program, can save travelers substantial amounts of money. Many hotels & tourist attractions offer steep discounts for group tours, which can even be arranged through travel agencies. A hidden benefit of signing up for a group tour is the chance to meet new people & develop new relationships with fellow globetrotters. Many working professionals hope to spend the bulk of their retirement traveling the globe. While such a goal is potentially costly, there are various ways to save & still see the world.
