Natural Ways To Fight Fall Allergies As the days become shorter & the weather cools down, a new crop of allergy symptoms can arise, turning the autumn season into one marked by sneezing, scratchy throats & itchy eyes. Medications can alleviate such symptoms, but allergy sufferers may want to investigate some natural ways to beat allergies. Ragweed is one of the more common triggers of autumnal allergies. Ragweed contributes to “hay fever,â€? which is a term to describe allergic rhinitis that occurs as a symptom of ragweed pollen in the air. Ragweed releases pollen in mid-August, & it can continue to be problematic until a deep freeze arrives. Other sources of fall allergies include leaf mold & pollen that is present on fallen leaves. This gets circulated when people begin to rake or blow fallen leaves. The good news is that many natural remedies work just as effectively as over-the-counter medications. Here’s how to beat the fall allergy blues. • Stay away from pollen & prevent it from being tracked indoors. Remove shoes when walking through the door. Take off clothes worn outside & launder them promptly, showering to wash pollen off of the body. Use an air conditioner or keep windows closed when the pollen count is high. • Increase omega-3 fatty acids. These acids may help with allergies. A German study linked foods high in omega3 fatty acids with the ability to fight inflammation, which is a hallmark of allergy suffering. Foods that are high in fatty acids include walnuts, flax, eggs, & cold-water fatty fish. • Use a mild cleanser to rinse the eyelids & eyelashes of pollen, as this is where it tends to congregate after being outdoors. Use saline spray to clear nasal passages of excess pollen as well. • Take natural supplements. A study published in the journal Clinical & Experimental Allergy found participants who used tablets of the herb butterbar showed significant allergy relief after only one week. Select herbs from reputable manufacturers who certify them. • Use eucalyptus oil. This oil is great to have in the house to help clear up sinuses & provide nasal congestion relief. Mix a small amount with coconut oil & rub onto the chest. • When doing housework or yard work, wear a mask to reduce the inhalation of specific allergens.

CBD Oil & Arthritis Health-conscious consumers have no doubt encountered advertisements for CBD oil at some point in recent memory. Supplement stores, pharmacies & even gyms may promote CBD oil, prompting consumers to wonder just what CBD is & how it may or may not play a role in the treatment of certain conditions, including arthritis. People unfamiliar with cannabidiol, or CBD, a type of cannabinoid, may assume it gets users high like marijuana. However, CBD doesn’t get users high, as another cannabinoid, a psychoactive part of the marijuana plant known as THC, is responsible for that effect. Advocates for CBD often note its potential to alleviate pain associated with arthritis. While animal studies have supported those claims, the Arthritis Foundation notes that such studies do not always translate to humans. In addition, the Arthritis Foundation notes that, thus far, human studies examining the potential efficacy of CBD in treating arthritis pain have produced mixed results, & the Harvard Medical School notes that more studies are necessary to determine the potential of CBD in treating pain, including that caused by arthritis. Laws also vary regarding the legality of CBD, though many places allow some form of CBD. Consumers should first consult with their physicians regarding their conditions & whether or not CBD might help them.

Amazing Facts About Honey Honey is perhaps best known for its sweet taste. But beneath that sweetness is a complex, healthy food. Bees produce honey from the pollen of plants through a complex enzymatic process, turning it into the beloved golden nectar. Many properties make honey a unique food that is not just tasty, but also quite healthy. Here are some facts about honey that might get you buzzing. • When stored in an airtight container, honey can last indefinitely. The substance is naturally acidic & low in moisture, which means it is an inhospitable environment for bacteria. There are small amounts of hydrogen peroxide in honey as well, inhibiting the growth of microorganisms. (Source: Tin Roof Teas) • Honey has antibacterial properties, so it has been relied on as a health food & topical treatment. Burns, cuts, infections, stomach ailments, & more have been treated with honey. (Source: National Center for Biotechnology Information) • Honey is the only food source produced by an insect that humans eat. (Source: Peace Bee Farmer) • Mead is a fermented beverage that is made from honey. It has a storied history as a beverage of choice in many different cultures. (Source: Hidden Legend Winery) • Honey is the only food that includes all the substances necessary to sustain life. This includes enzymes, vitamins & minerals. It also contains pinocembrin, a unique antioxidant associated with improved brain function. (Source: Sirhowy Valley Honey) • A honey bee produces roughly 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey over the course of its life. Bees are not the only insect to make honey, however. The honey wasp, native to Mexico, also can produce honey. (Sources: Golden Blossom Honey & Inverse) • Honey will take on the flavor of the nectar from which it was made. This nectar also will affect the color & the consistency of the honey. (Source: National Honey Board) Honey has a sweet & rich history. At times honey has been referred to as “the nectar of the gods,” & it is still enjoyed for pleasure & medicinal reasons today.

Common Cancer Risks You Can Control No person, regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, or economic background, is invulnerable to cancer. According to the World Health Organization, cancer is the second leading cause of death across the globe. In fact, about one in every six deaths worldwide is due to cancer. But cancer is not an unbeatable adversary. The WHO notes that around 1/3 of deaths from cancer are due to five behavioral & dietary risks that can be avoided. Including: High body mass index, low fruit and vegetable intake, lack of physical activity, tobacco use, & alcohol consumption. By taking steps to maintain a healthy weight, which can be accomplished by being physically active & adhering to a healthy diet that’s rich in fruits & vegetables, millions of people across the globe can reduce their risk for cancer & ultimately reduce their risk for dying from cancer. The same can be said for people who resolve to quit smoking, or avoid tobacco use entirely, & consume alcohol in moderation, if at all.

Five Ways To Increase Home Fire Safety An average of seven Americans die each week as a result of house fires. Most fires occur in residential buildings between the hours of 11 PM & 7 AM., when occupants are most likely to be asleep. Your first line of defense is fire preparedness. Here are five things you can do to increase your chance of survival in a fire: • Install smoke alarms on every story of your home & outside sleeping areas. Be sure to test them monthly, clean them every six months & replace batteries in spring & fall. Having working fire alarms can cut your chance of dying in a fire in half!

Belvidere “Ace Is The Place With The Helpful Hardware Folks.” • Paint • Key Center • Hardware • Tools • Electrical • Plumbing • Lawn & Garden • Screen & Window Repair • Carpet Express Shampooer • Propane • Kerosene & More

• When renovating, consider using fire-rated, noncombustible products. Your choice of insulation, for example, can be vital. Stone wool insulation, like that produced by Roxul, resists temperatures up to approximately 2,150 degrees F. When directly exposed to fire, it will not off-gas, contribute to toxic smoke or promote flames. Fire-resistant building materials can give you extra time to escape when seconds count. • Purchase a multi-use fire ladder for each bedroom in your home & practice using it. A fire ladder may be your only escape option if flames block critical exits.

Open Monday-Friday 7 am - 6 pm Saturday 7:30 am - 5 pm • Closed Sundays

• Place fire extinguishers on every level of your home, especially in high-risk areas like the kitchen, near fireplaces & in the garage. Use only for small, contained fires that are not spreading rapidly. Know how to operate your extinguisher before an emergency occurs using the PASS method: Pull pin, Aim low, Squeeze lever & Sweep from side to side. The safest option is always to evacuate your home & call for help.

Fire prevention measures are a serious matter in every home. Find out how to keep your home & family safe at nfpa.org or improve your fire safety knowledge by visiting the Roxul website.

BELVIDERE HARDWARE How Can I Help?

• Have a fire escape plan and practice it. A small fire can spread rapidly - you may only have minutes or seconds to escape. When going over the details of your escape plan, check windows & doors to ensure all open easily. Know your local emergency number (911). Never stop to gather belongings or re-enter a home.

3 Signs Of Sun-Damaged Skin The summer sun beckons many people outdoors. Soaking up some rays on a warm summer day can be a great way to unwind and get a little color. It’s not always easy to recognize signs of sun damage when spending time outdoors in the summer. Such damage may be overlooked or more evident in the fall, when people begin spending more time indoors. But sun-damaged skin should not be taken lightly. In fact, the Skin Cancer Foundation notes that the vast majority of melanomas, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, are caused by the sun. The SCF even notes that one study from researchers in the United Kingdom found that 86 % of melanomas can be attributed to exposure to the ultraviolet, or UV, radiation from the sun. Sun-damaged skin will not necessarily lead to skin cancer. However, the American Academy of Dermatology notes that sun damage can lead to skin cancer. Going outdoors without adequate protection makes skin vulnerable to sun-related damage. Learning to recognize three of the more common types of sun damage may compel people to visit their physicians & take potentially lifesaving steps to prevent future damage. 1. Wrinkles. Wrinkles aren’t always a byproduct of aging. While the Mayo Clinic notes that skin becomes less elastic & more fragile as it ages, increasing the likelihood that wrinkles will develop, wrinkles also can indicate sun-damaged skin. 2. Age spots. According to the AAD, age spots, which are flat brown, gray or black spots on the skin, appear on areas of the body that are most often exposed to the sun, including the face & hands. The AAD notes that what looks like an age spot could actually be skin cancer. If any such spots are detected, men & women should see a board-certified dermatologist for a thorough skin exam. 3. Loose skin. Loose skin is sometimes a byproduct of aging, but it also can be indicative of sun damage. Various products claim to treat loose skin, but the AAD notes that facelift-like results likely won’t come from any product sold in a jar. For example, the AAD says results from skin-firming creams will be subtle at best. Products that contain a retinoid like retinol, which can help the body make more collagen, might produce minor results. Sun-related skin damage can affect peoples’ appearance & even suggest the presence of something more serious, such as skin cancer. Learn more by visiting the American Academy of Dermatology at www.aad.org.
