Unique Ways To Honor Dad This Father’s Day
SUNDAY-TUESDAY | 11 AM-2 AM WEDNESDAY-THURSDAY | 7 AM-2 AM FRIDAY-SATURDAY | 6 AM-2 AM
Father’s Day is a day many families look forward to. Though its history might not go back as far as many religious or government-designated holidays, Father’s Day is rife with tradition in many households. Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June. While Father’s Day might trace its origins to the United States, the holiday is celebrated across the globe, including in Argentina, Greece, India, Singapore, & New Zealand. Fathers often receive gifts from their spouses & children on Father’s Day. What to give the dad who seemingly has it all leaves many people scratching their heads in the weeks preceding Father’s Day. People who find themselves in such situations can think outside the box & look for ways to honor their fathers this year. The following are some unique ways to honor Dad this Father’s Day. Travel - Dad may be pleasantly surprised by a stroll down Memory Lane. Plan a day trip or weekend excursion to Dad’s hometown, visiting all his old haunts, including the house he grew up in, and allow him to serve as tour guide. This can be a great way for Dad to share stories & for his family to learn a little more about the old man. Other great places to visit include Dad’s college campus or his ancestral homeland. Highlight Reel - In the months preceding Father’s Day, do some covert digging through family photo albums to create a “This Is Your Life” highlight reel for Dad. Go back as far as possible, even looking through Dad’s baby photos if you can find them. This might require a collaborative effort, requiring the whole family to work together, but that can make for an enjoyable way for families to spend time together & see how Dad became the man he is today. Present the finished product at a family dinner on Father’s Day. Make A List - Another unique way to honor Dad is to compile a list of the many ways you are & will always be grateful for having him as a father. Adults honoring their fathers can cite specific examples they recall from childhood and young adulthood when Dad went above & beyond or served as a sounding board or shoulder to cry on. This is a great way to honor Dad & let him know all those sacrifices & special moments are still appreciated & will never be forgotten. Father’s Day is a chance to honor Dad, & the way you choose to do so can be as unique as the man himself.

The History Of Flag Day The American flag is a symbol of the country’s history, pride & success in overcoming political oppression. Through its many incarnations & variations, the Stars and Stripes has waved over government buildings, schools and private residences. According to History.com, in 1775, the Second Continental Army led to the creation of the first “American” flag. However, that flag was too similar to the British Union Jack flag, George Washington requested a revision. In 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution stating that the “flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red & white.” Furthermore, the “union” was represented by 13 stars of white in a blue field, “representing a new constellation.” More than a century later, a small-town Wisconsin teacher named Bernard Cigrand came up with the idea for an annual flag day in 1885. Even though the Fourth of July, a holiday in which the flag is prominently & proudly displayed, had long been celebrated as the birthday of the United States, Cigrand wanted a holiday that would focus specifically on the flag in all its glory. June 14 was selected because it marked the anniversary of the official adoption of the first flag. Cigrand led his school in the first formal observance of the holiday, & throughout his life continued to advocate for respect of the flag. Various other organizations liked the idea of a day to honor the flag, including the State Board of Education of New York, the Betsy Ross House & the New York Society of the Sons of the Revolution. Yet, it wasn’t until May 30, 1916, that Flag Day was officially established by presidential proclamation by President Woodrow Wilson. Still, it would take another 33 years for President Truman to sign an Act of Congress designating June 14 as the official National Flag Day, which he did on August 3, 1949. Americans can honor the flag by displaying it on Flag Day. Here’s how to display the flag properly, courtesy of Military.com. • The flag should be free of any obstructions, such as power lines or tree limbs. • If displayed with other flags, Old Glory should be the top-most or in the center of a horizontal array of flags. • If the flag is displayed on its side, the blue field should be to the left. • The flag should be raised in the morning at a residence or business & taken down at night. The only exception to the flag being out at night is if it’s illuminated. • Flags can be repaired. However, if a flag is tattered, it can be removed & brought to a local VFW hall to be properly disposed of. The Boone County VFW Post 1461 is located at 1310 W. Lincoln Ave., Belvidere. Flag Day honors the Stars & Stripes, a symbol of the great American nation.

Flower gardens can add color & awe-inspiring appeal to a property. The National Gardening Assoc. notes that gardeners can find nearly every color of the spectrum in flowering perennials. So whether you prefer soft pink, are partial to bright red or want to relax in a garden & gaze at something deep blue, chances are you’ll find a perennial to tickle your fancy. The NGA offers the following breakdown of colors to help gardeners learn how their gardens can set the mood they’re looking for. Bright Colors - A garden full of bright colors like red, orange, magenta, & yellow can provide a landscape with vigor & energy. Brightly colored flowers can withstand especially bright sunshine, meaning gardeners can marvel at their appearance even when the sun might be adversely affecting other plants & flowers. Pastel Colors - which include soft pink, powder blue, lavender, & peach, create a tranquil feeling in a garden. This makes pastel perfect for those who want their gardens to be a relaxing, peaceful respite from the hustle & bustle of everyday life. The NGA notes that pastels may look washed out in the midday sun, so they might be best enjoyed early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Complementary Colors - are those that are opposite one another on the color wheel. Orange & blue are examples of complementary colors. Complementary colors can add creative energy & vitality to a garden. Harmonious Colors - These colors are those that are next to each other on the color wheel, such as orange & red. The NGA recommends harmonious colors for gardeners looking to create a unifying feel in their gardens without resorting to a monochromatic color scheme. Harmonious colors give off a gentle feeling that can make for a relaxing garden atmosphere. Monochromatic Colors - Monochromatic gardens can be awe-inspiring even though they stick to a single color & don’t provide an array of awe-inspiring colors. Gardeners with monochromatic gardens make them interesting by using plants of various sizes & shapes. When planting a garden, gardeners can choose whichever color scheme they prefer. To learn more about the effects of color on a garden, visit the National Gardening Association website at www.garden.org.

Common Cataract Causes & Treatment Cataracts are the most common cause of vision loss among people age 40 & older. According to All About Vision, cataracts also are the principal cause of blindness in the world. There are more cases of cataracts worldwide than there are glaucoma, macular degeneration & diabetic retinopathy, states Prevent Blindness America. Fortunately, cataracts are easily recognized & treated. What are cataracts? A cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye that affects vision. The lens is the clear part of the eye that helps focus light - and images - on the retina. The lens must be clear to receive a sharp image. If the lens is cloudy, vision will be blurred. Cataracts tend to form slowly. Initially, they only affect a small part of the lens, & they’re not very bothersome as a result. However, over time, cataracts can grow & impair vision. Seeing “halos” around lights, fading of colors, sensitivity to light, glare, & the need for brighter light for reading & handling tasks are common symptoms. What causes cataracts? Various things, including aging or injury to the eye tissue, can cause cataracts. Prior eye surgery, diabetes, long-term use of steroid medications, & inherited genetic disorders also can cause cataracts, says the Mayo Clinic. Smoking & alcohol use as well as consistent exposure to UV sunlight also may contribute to the formation of cataracts. With aging, the lenses in the eyes become less flexible, less transparent & thicker. Tissues within the lens can break down & clump together, clouding small areas within the lens of the eye, thereby forming a cataract. Cataracts may be a subcapsular cataract, which occurs at the back of the lens. A nuclear cataract forms in the center of the lens. A cortical cataract starts in the periphery of the lens & works its way inward to the center. Treating cataracts: Cataracts need only be treated if they are affecting vision severely or preventing examination or treatment of another eye problem. An eye care professional will discuss with patients if surgery is needed. The National Eye Institute says surgery is safe & effective. In roughly 90% of cases, people who have undergone cataract surgery have better vision afterward. The surgery involves removing the clouded lens & replacing it with a clear, artificial one. The procedure is usually done on an outpatient basis and patients typically stay awake during the surgery. Routine eye examinations are a key part of an overall health plan. They can shed light on the formation of cataracts and help people develop effective treatment plans.
Managing Cholesterol Starts With What You Eat High cholesterol, particularly high levels of “bad” cholesterol, is a risk for heart disease. The Mayo Clinic says that high cholesterol also can increase risk for heart attack. Understanding cholesterol & how to control it can help people live longer, healthier lives. Cholesterol is a waxy substance that comes from two main sources. It is produced naturally by the liver & is obtained by eating certain foods, primarily animal products like meat, dairy & eggs. When these foods are consumed, the liver makes more cholesterol than it normally would, says the American Heart Association. Harvard Medical School says that making certain food choices can help lower cholesterol levels. Some foods help prevent cholesterol from forming, while others lower low-density lipoprotein, also referred to as “LDL” or “bad” cholesterol. Some foods increase the amount of high-density lipoprotein, also known as “HDL” or “good” cholesterol. Still other foods block the body from absorbing cholesterol. Because food & cholesterol are so closely linked, dietary changes can have a profound impact on people diagnosed with high levels of bad cholesterol. The following are some changes such individuals can implement. • Increase soluble fiber - found in oatmeal & other whole grains, flax, apples, legumes, & beans. Because soluble fiber can’t be broken down, it goes through the body & bloodstream like a giant mop, collecting bile generated to digest fats. The fiber & the fat-soaked bile are then excreted in the stool. According to Healthline, bile is made from cholesterol, & when the liver needs to make more of it to digest fat, it does so by pulling cholesterol out of the bloodstream, naturally reducing cholesterol levels as a result. • Eliminate trans fats or those foods listed on labels primarily as hydrogenated oils, can raise overall cholesterol levels. The Food & Drug Admin. has banned the use of partially hydrogenated vegetable oils by Jan. 1, 2021. • Eat more fatty fish. Harvard Medical School says that eating fish two or three times a week can lower LDL by replacing meat & by delivering LDL-lowering omega-3 fats to the body. Omega-3s reduce triglycerides in the bloodstream & also protect the heart by helping to prevent the onset of abnormal heart rhythms. • Use vegetable oils - like canola or soybean, can be used in place of solid fats like butter or lard when cooking. • Choose low-fat dairy. Substitute the low- or no-fat varieties of milk & cheeses instead of high-fat versions. Dietary changes can make a big difference when it comes to reducing cholesterol.
