The origins of Valentine’s Day are largely unknown. Some suggest Valentine’s Day was initially a way to honor St. Valentine on the anniversary of his death. Others believe it was the Christian church’s way of Christianizing the Pagan celebration of Lupercalia, a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture.

Many different traditions can be linked to Valentine’s Day. Here is a list of the interesting ways Valentine’s Day is celebrated across the globe. South Korea - In South Korea, men get to enjoy the spotlight on Valentine’s Day, as women bestow gifts of chocolate on them. In return, a month later men reciprocate with gifts for women on White Day. South Koreans take Valentine’s Day a step further on Black Day, which falls on April 14. This is an opportunity for all single people who may not have received Valentine’s Day gifts to gather at restaurants and eat a dish called “black noodles” as they celebrate their singleton status.
The Veterans’ Assistance Commission provides needed services exclusively to Honorably Discharged Military Veterans & their families. We work with local Veterans’ Service Organizations as well as local, state & federal agencies, to ensure your rights. Services include: Interim and/or emergency veterans’ (financial) assistance, emotional support services, administrative case work, transition center services & VA medical-related transportation services.
Denmark and Norway - These Scandinavian countries didn’t really celebrate Valentine’s Day until recently, but have now put their own spin on the traditions. Men write funny poems or rhyming love notes called Gaekkebrev and send them to women anonymously. Women must try to guess their admirers by counting dots that are put on the note that correspond to the number of letters in the man’s name. Estonia - In Estonia, Valentine’s Day is a day more devoted to friendship than romantic love. It is called “Sõbrapäev” in Estonian, which translates to “Friend’s Day.” Cards and gifts are exchanged among friends.

France - Considered to be one of the most romantic countries in the world, France can be an ideal place to participate in Valentine’s Day traditions. The French have an old custom called “une loterie d’amour,” which is a drawing for love. Single men and women of all ages once entered houses that faced one another and took turns calling out to one another to find romantic matches. The men could refuse the match and leave the woman looking for another man to call on. Women who were not paired up would light a bonfire and damn the men who rejected them. The French government eventually banned the practice because of rowdy crowds. Italy - Italian lovers celebrate Valentine’s Day in much the same way as Americans. One interesting Valentine’s tradition in Italy is locking padlocks to different structures, which is called “Lucchetti dell’Amore (locks of love).” Couples attach the locks to bridges, railings and lamp posts, inscribe their names and throw away the key. The action suggests the couple will be together forever.

Wales - In Wales, Valentine’s Day is not celebrated. Rather, the Welsh commemorate St. Dwynwen’s Day, who is their patron saint of lovers on January 25. It is customary to gift love-spoons, a tradition that likely stems from the practice of sailors carving intricately decorated spoons of wood and presenting them to women they were interested in courting or marrying.

Spay & Neuter Awareness Month 6 Reasons To Spay Or Neuter Pets Now Upon adopting a companion animal, one of the first decisions pet parents should make, advise veterinarians & animal welfare experts, is to spay or neuter their new friend. Homeless animals are a global problem. Overpopulation continues to plague dogs and cats, and there are as many as 300,000 homeless animals euthanized in animal shelters every year, says The Humane Society of the United States. While many would be quick to assume these are puppies and kittens of “street” animals, the society notes that euthanized animals are often the offspring of family pets - even pure breeds.

Spaying females and neutering males is the most effective method of birth control for these popular pets. Preventing unwanted offspring might be the main reason many pet owners spay or neuter their pets. But there are many additional reasons that make spaying and neutering a good decision. 1. The ASPCA says spaying helps prevent uterine infections and breast tumors that are malignant in roughly 50 percent of dogs and 90% of cats. Spaying before a cat’s first heat is ideal.
FUN IT UP.
2. USA Today reports that neutered male dogs live 18% longer than dogs that were not neutered, while spayed female dogs live 23% longer than those that are not spayed. Neutering reduces the instinct to roam and get into trouble, which may contribute to the longer life expectancy.

4. Spayed females will not go into heat. During heat, which can occur four to five days at a time every three weeks during mating season, females may yowl and urinate around the house. 5. WebMD says non-neutered male dogs and cats may mark their territory with urine and can be more aggressive during mating seasons. Neutering can help calm the animals.
Providing Great Real Estate & Living Solutions For Seniors
6. HSUS states that neutering and spaying is the best way to prevent overpopulation and improves the chances that shelter pets will be adopted.
You can rely on me to deliver outstanding results, flawless service & a rewarding real estate experience.
Contrary to popular belief, spaying and neutering pets will not cause weight gain. As long as pet parents continue to provide exercise and control their pets’ diets, pets will remain fit and in good health.
My focus is YOU. My priority is YOU. My commitment is to YOU.
It’s best to discuss neutering and spaying with a veterinarian to deterine the best time for pets to undergo the procedure. Many cats and dogs can be successfully neutered and spayed at around eight weeks of age, but older pets can be spayed or neutered as well.

3 Heart Health Tips For Women Heart disease may be something most commonly associated with men, but it can be deadly for women as well. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease is to blame for one in every four female deaths in the United States. Recognizing the threat that heart disease poses is a great first step for women who want to avoid becoming one of the hundreds of thousands of women who lose their lives to heart disease each year. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration offers the following advice to women looking to prioritize their heart health. 1. Consume a heart-friendly diet. Thanks to food labels, it’s easier than ever for women to consume hearthealthy diets. When examining labels, look for foods that are low in sodium & sugar. When planning meals, avoid foods that are high in trans fats. In 2015, the FDA ruled that trans fats were not recognized as safe for use in human foods & gave manufacturers 3 years to remove them from their products. The Cleveland Clinic advises consumers to check labels for “partially hydrogenated oils,” which are a hidden source of trans fats. In addition, the Cleveland Clinic notes that foods such as cakes, pies, cookies, biscuits, microwavable breakfast sandwiches, and many types of crackers contain trans fats. 2. Take existing conditions seriously. Certain conditions can increase a woman’s risk for heart disease. While women may not be able to turn back the clocks and prevent these conditions from developing, they can take them for the serious threat they are and do their best to manage them. High blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol can increase a woman’s risk for heart disease. Take medications as directed, monitor blood sugar levels if you have diabetes and routinely have your blood pressure and cholesterol tested to ensure any preexisting conditions are not increasing your risk for heart disease. 3. Discuss aspirin intake. The FDA notes that many physicians prescribe aspirin to lower patients’ risk of heart disease, clot-related strokes and other problems related to cardiovascular disease. However, there are risks associated with long-term aspirin use, and such risks should be discussed with a physician. According to the FDA, bleeding in the stomach, bleeding in the brain, kidney failure, and certain types of stroke are some of the potential side effects of long-term aspirin use. Such side effects may never appear, but the risk that they might makes discussing the pros and cons of aspirin well worth it. Women can learn more about heart disease by visiting www.fda.gov.

• Lincoln practiced law, but he did not have a formal law degree. He only had about 18 months of schooling in the field of law. • The president disliked being called “Abe.â€? He preferred being called by his last name instead. • Lincoln was an accomplished wrestler as a young man. His wrestling proclivity helped secure him a place in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. • He was born in Hodgenville, KY, becoming the 1st elected president to be born outside of the original 13 states. • In addition to being a wrestler, a patent-holder & a president, Lincoln also was a licensed bartender. Before his presidency, he owned a business called the Berry & Lincoln General Store & Tavern in New Salem, IL. • He was an animal lover & was not known to actively hunt or fish. He had a dog, “Fidoâ€? & a cat, “Ta bby.â€? • Paving the way for future beard-lovers, Lincoln was the first president with a beard. An 11-year-old girl named Grace Bedell convinced Lincoln to grow his whiskers in exchange for her brothers’ votes.

• John Wilkes Booth, Lincoln’s assassin, was a famous actor who had a fan in Lincoln himself. The president actually was photographed with Booth during his 2nd inauguration. Interestingly enough, a few months before Booth assassinated Lincoln, the president’s oldest son was saved from injury by John Wilkes Booth’s brother on a train platform in New Jersey. The life of Abraham Lincoln is justifiably celebrated every year. But that life is perhaps even more interesting than many celebrants may know.

Fun Facts About The Big Game While Super Bowl LI, which was played at NRG Stadium in Houston, TX, on Feb. 5, 2017, featured a thrilling come-from-behind victory by the New England Patriots over the Atlanta Falcons, the very first Super Bowl, played on Jan. 15, 1967, provided no such intrigue. A 35-10 victory by the Green Bay Packers over the Kansas City Chiefs, the AFL-NFL World Championship Game (the game would only retroactively be known as “Super Bowl I) was played at the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles. The game was tightly played in the 1st half, with Green Bay holding a 14-10 lead at halftime. But the Packers, coached by legendary head coach Vince Lombardi, pulled away in the 3rd quarter, scoring 2 touchdowns, while ultimately holding the Chiefs scoreless in the 2nd half. The game was played in front of approx. 62,000 people (roughly 33,000 seats went unsold), & estimates suggest as many as 75 million American viewers watched the game on TV. Nielsen reported that more than 111 million Americans watched Super Bowl LI in 2017, & estimates suggest roughly 50 million more people watched the game across the globe. TV ads might not have garnered the attention or generated as much talk around the office water cooler in 1967 as they do today, & they didn’t cost nearly as much. The cost of a 30-second commercial during the first Super Bowl in 1967 was $42,000, while such an ad cost advertisers just over $5 million in 2017.
