Enjoy A Season Of The Arts Do you consider yourself a lover of music and the arts? If you do, you are in very good company. According to the 2012 Survey of Public Participation in the Arts from the National Endowment for the Arts, nearly half of American adults (roughly 115 million people) attended at least one type of visual or performing arts activity that year. Nearly the same amount participated in some type or artistic activity. Going to the theater or attending a concert are popular ways to indulge one’s passion for the arts. Fortunately, there are many additional ways for men and women to support the arts. • Become an arts patron. If you find yourself attending shows multiple times a year, it may be worth the investment to become a patron of a performance group or a particular theater. Membership may entitle you to advance notification & the opportunity to purchase tickets before they go on sale to the masses. Many organizations even provide complementary offerings to members, including free beverages, complementary tickets to certain performances & entry to member lounges before and/or after the show. Don’t dismiss local theater groups, either, as even high school and college students put on impressive shows. • Join a discount ticket membership group. Free enrollment in a ticket benefit group is a perk available to men & women who work for certain organizations. Such groups offer discounted ticket rates to members & can help you save a good deal on the purchase of tickets over the course of a year, so speak with human resources personnel at your place of employment to determine your eligibility for such groups. • Make it a group night out. Spread the word about a favorite play or performance by taking in a show with friends or family members. Inviting others to share in the experience may encourage a love of the arts in your loved ones. Plus, it can be more fun to attend as a group, sharing the experience & making critiques afterward. Theaters & other performance venues are often centrally located, so you can make the most of a night out with dinner before the show & drinks afterward. • Explore different genres. If you have a tendency to gravitate toward musicals, stray from the norm & try a drama on your next night out. Expand your musical horizons as well. Don’t shy away from a particular type of music because it isn’t what you’re accustomed to. You never know what you may discover when you experiment with different musical styles. It’s quite possible you will fall in love with a new style of music. • Shop well in advance. Although you may periodically earn discounts if you wait until the last minute to purchase tickets, it’s often wise to shop around months before a performance. Shopping early affords you your choice of seats & reduces the risk of losing out to a sellout. There is no time like the present to enjoy the arts. The Boone County Arts Council offers free concerts in the park during the summer at 6:30 PM. Remaining performances include: July 9th, Baltic Mill Stage, Trinadora; July 16th, Candlewick Lake Rec Center, Midnight Vintage; July 23rd, Wings & Wheels Museum at Poplar Grove Airport, The Reeds & Waddy. Don’t miss local theatre productions - visit mainstreetplayersofboonecounty.com and rockvalleycollege.edu/Community/Theatre for schedules and ticket information.

Employ The Buddy System With Your Pet Adopting a healthier lifestyle is not always so easy. Men & women who want to lose weight & get healthier often find it’s easier said than done. But one of the ways in which many people reach their fitness goals is to employ the buddy system, which enlists the help of a friend or family member with similar fitness goals to keep you motivated as you work toward a healthier you. But you don’t necessarily need to lean on family or friends to help you make your fitness goals a reality. Man’s best friend, who might benefit from a healthier lifestyle himself, can make just as good a partner on your journey to a healthier lifestyle. The following are a handful of ways you & your four-legged friend can start living a healthier, more active life. *Eat more fresh food. This may seem like an easy resolution. However, it takes time & preparation. For humans, this means incorporating more fruits & veggies into your diet. For pets, this means ensuring that their pet food uses ingredients such as fresh turkey, salmon & duck, fresh omega-3 & omega-6 oils (from coconuts & canola), wholesome berries, fruits & vegetables like peas, spinach & carrots. You can learn more about choosing a pet food with the freshest, healthiest ingredients at petcurean.com. *Get more exercise. Did you know pets can decrease our blood pressure & cholesterol levels & increase our opportunities for exercise, outdoor activities & socialization? Exercising together will not only help optimize your health but also allow you to spend more time together. *Schedule activity time with your pet. Most of us schedule time for other appointments & meetings, so why not set aside some priority time for pets, too? Just like you would a more typical fitness routine, schedule daily activity time with your pet. Your pet will appreciate the extra attention, & both of you will benefit from daily physical activity.

Gas Grill Safety Tips Backyard barbecues are a warm weather tradition. While some brave men & women grill year-round, many reserve their outdoor cooking to those times of year when the weather fully cooperates. The laid back vibes of spring, summer and early fall can make it easy for grillmasters to overlook safety when cooking outside. But grilling requires that cooks prioritize safety. While both charcoal & gas grills can cause fires, the National Fire Protection Association says gas grills contributed to four out of five grill fires. The NFPA also notes that many of those gas grill-related fires can be traced to leaks or breaks in the hoses. The following are a handful of ways cooks can safeguard themselves, their families, their grills, & their homes against leaks or breaks in their gas grill hoses. • Inspect hoses at the start of each grilling season. Leaks, breaks or cracks in the hoses may occur when moving grills into the garage or shed for the winter. So it’s a good idea to inspect the hoses at the start of each season before using the grill for the first time each year. • Employ soap & water if you suspect but cannot find any leaks. Travelers Insurance recommends that men & women who suspect a leak is present but cannot find one apply a light solution of soap & water to the hose. If there is a leak, bubbles will appear. • Do not turn on the gas if the grill lid is closed, gas can build up inside & potentially ignite, causing the lid to blow off. So men & women should always make sure the lids of their grills are open before turning on the gas. • Stop grilling if you smell gas & see no flame. If there is no flame, but you still smell gas, turn off the tank & grill immediately. Some leaks may cease, at which time you can take your tanks to be serviced. If the leak persists, contact the local fire department. • Turn off the grill & cease cooking if you smell gas while food is on the grill. The odor of gas while cooking is another telltale sign of a leak, even if there is a flame & food appears to be cooking. Contact the local fire department if such a situation presents itself. • Close the valve after cooking. Always make sure the valve is tightly closed after cooking. • Store tanks away from the house. Propane tanks should always be stored away from the house. Near the end of each grilling season, homeowners may want to use what’s left of the gas in their propane tanks so they don’t have to store tanks over the winter. Grilling with gas can make for delicious meals, but you must prioritize safety around your gas grill to prevent fires & other accidents.

Dating After 50 Sweaty palms, heart palpitations & nervousness are common first date symptoms. Many people can remember the feelings of excitement & fear they felt the first time they went out on a date as a teenager. But those who find themselves back in the dating pool as mature adults quickly learn that dating jitters still may be present even after all this time. Recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau finds that those over the age of 50 are now divorcing at double the rate of younger people. Loss of a spouse is another reason the over 50 crowd may once again be dating.

Recent reports say that 40% of online daters today are over the age of 50. Successfully navigating the waters of matchmaking sites or old-fashioned meet-and-greets means reacquainting oneself with a few handy tips. • Don’t open up with your extended history. Older daters have more life experiences & potentially a greater number of past relationships. Recognize that you both may bring former spouses & even children to the table, but don’t feel the need to delve into all of your adventures (or misadventures) on the first date. Early dates are not for setting the entire course of your relationship. They’re for getting acquainted & seeing if this is a relationship you want to continue. Getting too personal right off the bat can sabotage a relationship before it starts. • Take it slow. There’s no need to rush anything along. Perceived societal notions no longer may be causing pressing relationship deadlines. Take the first date & any other subsequent dates at a pace that’s mutually agreed upon. It may take several months to years before all of your truths come out, but for now focus on having fun until you’re both ready to share more. • Look for the positives. Before you decide a person is not for you, make a note of all of his or her positive attributes. What do you like most about him or her? Initial negativity or doubts may stem from your fear of rejection. Be open to others who may not fit your type. • Don’t get discouraged. The person you first meet may not be the right fit. Don’t let this turn you off of dating. • Meet in public places. Many dates begin with online conversations with the intention to meet for a physical date later on. Always keep safety in mind when setting a rendezvous with someone you don’t know well. Choose a public meeting spot, such as a busy restaurant. Ask a friend to check in on you via phone call. Consider a doubledate if you’re weary. Take your own car & meet at the date location rather than being picked up at home. • Wait for intimacy. It may take a while before you feel comfortable getting intimate with someone new. This person should respect your feelings & not pressure you into a physical relationship until you are both ready. Dating after 50 means taking chances, going slow & exploring possibilities that make you feel comfortable.

Elderly Susceptible To The Heat According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, people ages 65 & older are more prone to heat stroke & heat-related stress than those of other ages. Seniors’ bodies are not able to adjust to sudden changes in temperature as quickly as younger people’s. A chronic condition that affects the body’s response to heat, as well as taking certain prescription medications also may play a role in seniors’ susceptibility to the heat. There are different types of heat-related injuries, though heat exhaustion & heat stroke are the most common. Here are signs that a person may be experiencing one or the other. Heat Exhaustion - weakness, tiredness, heavy sweating, paleness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, fainting, fast, weak pulse rate, headache, fast and shallow breathing Heat Stroke - extremely high body temperature (over 105 F), red, hot & dry skin, absence of sweat, throbbing headache, dizziness, nausea What to do * Drink cool, nonalcoholic beverages. Water and diluted fruit juices can help rehydrate the body quickly. * Restrict physical activity. * Take a cool shower or bath or wipe yourself down with a damp cloth. * Seek an air-conditioned environment. Visit a shopping mall, library or cooling center to keep cool. * Wear lightweight clothing. * Try to remain indoors during the hottest hours of the day. * Wear hats or use an umbrella to shield your head from sunshine outdoors. * Eat cool foods, but avoid extremely cold foods. Otherwise you risk the chance of developing stomach cramps. * Do not do laundry or turn on appliances that contribute to extra indoor heat.
