Turkey Is Nutritious All Year Long Aside from the occasional sandwich, many people think turkey is solely for the Thanksgiving dinner table. However, turkey is much more than a holiday centerpiece. Anyone concerned about healthy eating would be wise to learn more about the health benefits of turkey & find ways to include it in their diets throughout the year. Turkey is low in fat & high in protein, making it an important source of nutrition. One piece of turkey breast without the skin measures up at 160 calories, four grams of fat & a whopping 30 grams of protein, according to the USDA Nutrient Data Lab. Dark meat & turkey legs are higher in calories but boast similar amounts of protein. The average portion of turkey is 100 grams, or 3.5 ounces of meat. This is about the size & thickness of a deck of cards. A single serving of turkey can provide around 65% of the recommended daily intake of protein. Turkey is more than just a low fat source of protein. The meat is rich in niacin (B3), which may help increase HDL cholesterol, widely known as the “good” form of cholesterol. Niacin, in addition to helping balance cholesterol levels, can lower a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease by reducing atherosclerosis, which is a hardening of the arteries. The resource Healthline also says niacin may help reduce inflammation & symptoms of arthritis. Turkey also is rich in vitamins B6 & B12. B6 helps keep red blood cells healthy & reduce fatigue, while B12 can decrease levels of homocysteine that can contribute to cognitive decline. Turkey is also a good source of selenium, which helps to keep hair & nails healthy while serving as an immune system booster that protects against damage to cells & tissues. Turkey is lower in calories & fat and higher in protein than chicken. Those who routinely consume chicken as part of a healthy diet can substitute it for turkey for even greater nutritional benefits. Turkey also is versatile, as it can be baked, boiled, stir-fried, grilled, ground, chopped for salads, & sliced for sandwiches. Turkey can be served for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Home chefs often find they can substitute turkey for any meat in a recipe with good results.
Celebrate Thanksgiving With Family & Friends, Wednesday, Nov. 22nd - Traditional Turkey Dinner, $5 Per Plate Heritage Woods of Belvidere, 4730 Squaw Prairie Rd. Please RSVP by Nov. 15th at 815-544-9495.
Thanksgiving Fun Facts The first Thanksgiving celebration took place in the fall of 1621 in Plymouth Colony between European settlers and the Wampanoag Indians and it lasted three days. Talk about a food coma. According to the National Turkey Federation, 88% of Americans have turkey on Thanksgiving. Filling America’s appetite for turkeys is a tall task. Last year there were 254 million raised in the U.S., which is up 2% from the previous year. The most popular state for raising turkeys was Minnesota, which raised 46 million turkeys. The average turkey purchased for Thanksgiving weighs 16 lbs. (7 kilograms), the National Turkey Federation says. White meat makes up 70% of turkeys, while dark meat makes up the other 30%. Turkey was the first meal enjoyed by Neil Armstrong & Buzz Aldrin when they were on the moon - a perfect turkey tidbit to impress holiday dinner guests. It’s hard to imagine the turkey as the official bird of the U.S., but if Ben Franklin had had his way, it could have been. In a letter to his daughter, Franklin referred to the turkey saying, “I wish the bald eagle had not been chosen as the representative of our country! The turkey is a much more respectable bird, & withal a true original native of America.” All facts are from the United States Census Bureau & the National Turkey Federation.

How To Help Veterans In Need Millions of men & women serve in the military & make the sacrifices that such service requires. Risking their lives to serve their countries, veterans sometimes endure mental & physical trauma, returning home to face uphill battles as they deal with their injuries. Many veterans in need are not just in need of medical attention. Learning that their efforts & sacrifices are recognized & appreciated by the ordinary citizens they protect can make a world of difference to veterans as they recover from their injuries. Men, women & children who want to help veterans in need can do so in various ways. • Visit a veterans hospital. Contact a local veterans’ hospital to inquire about their volunteer programs. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs notes that each year more than 75,000 volunteers spend more than 11 million hours in service to America’s veterans. Visiting veterans at the hospital to hear their stories can lift their spirits & aid in their recoveries. In addition, veterans’ hospitals may have volunteer opportunities that make it easier for hospitals to operate at optimal capacity.

• Help a neighbor. Unfortunately, many veterans return home with injuries that affect their ability to make it through a typical day without assistance. Disabled veterans may be unable to do their own grocery shopping or maintain their homes. If a neighbor or nearby veteran is facing such hurdles, offer to do his or her shopping or mow his or her lawn. Such tasks won’t take much time but can make a world of difference to veterans.
Family Owned & Operated Same Day Delivery Available Monday-Saturday!
• Offer professional services free of charge. Professionals who want to help veterans can offer their services free of charge. Accountants can offer to prepare veterans’ tax returns for free, while attorneys can provide legal advice to veterans who need it. Contractors can help disabled veterans by offering to make alterations to their homes for free or at cost. • Employ social media to help local veterans. Many people who want to help local veterans might not be able to do so more than one day per week. But some veterans may require daily assistance. Men & women can start a locally-based Facebook group for fellow members of their community who want to pitch in to help local veterans. Such a group can make it easier to share information & arrange help for veterans in need.

Separating Epilepsy Facts From Myths Epilepsy affects some 50 million people around the world. According to the Epilepsy Foundation, 2.7 million people in the United States are living with epilepsy, making it the third most common neurological disorder, after stroke & Alzheimer’s disease, in the United States. The majority of those living with epilepsy can be successfully treated with medication to help prevent seizures. Epilepsy is a part of a group of disorders that temporarily impair brain function & affects people differently. As with any condition, especially one that can be so stressful to experience, assumptions about people with epilepsy are made based on misinformation. The following are some common myths & less widely known facts about epilepsy. MYTH: Epilepsy affects intelligence. FACT: Epilepsy itself does not lower intelligence. Some very intelligent people throughout history have had epilepsy, including Beethoven & Napoleon. If seizures are frequent, epilepsy can impact learning ability by proving itself disruptive in the classroom. MYTH: A person with epilepsy can swallow his tongue during a seizure. FACT: It is impossible to swallow one’s own tongue. Nothing should ever be placed in a person’s mouth during a seizure. This can result in dental trauma. MYTH: All seizures involve bodily convulsions. FACT: There are many different types of seizures, ranging from altered consciousness to a blank stare to convulsions. A person might not even realize another is experiencing a seizure from epilepsy while it is occurring. MYTH: Epilepsy is contagious. FACT: Epilepsy is not contagious. Causes of epilepsy are generally unknown. Some people are born with the condition, while others develop it due to some sort of traumatic brain injury, a tumor or a lesion. MYTH: People with epilepsy are violent or insane. FACT: Very often seizure-related behaviors can be mistaken for mental health issues. Some epilepsy sufferers speak gibberish during a seizure, while others appear frightened, cannot speak or become agitated. However, this does not mean that person is violent or mentally unstable. MYTH: All seizures are medical emergencies. FACT: Brain damage rarely occurs from seizures, & a person can recover quickly afterward. It is not necessary to rush a person to the hospital at every sign of a seizure. However, if the seizure lasts for more than 10 minutes, call an ambulance. MYTH: Epilepsy is something that lasts a person’s whole life. FACT: More than half of all childhood forms of epilepsy are outgrown by adulthood, says the Epilepsy Foundation. About 60% of people who develop seizures have epilepsy that can be easily controlled & go away. When a person has been free of seizures for 1 to 3 years, medications may be withdrawn slowly. MYTH: Epilepsy is a barrier to success. FACT: A person with epilepsy can go on to live a successful, full & happy life. Various therapies are available, & with a positive outlook, epilepsy does not have to control one’s life.

Holidays Can Be Difficult Contributed by Heritage Woods of Belvidere
The holidays are almost here. These next two months are arguably the happiest months of the year, filled with family, friends, good food, tradition, and joy. But, sometimes, these months can prove to be some of the hardest months for our seniors. Those traditions we hold so close to our hearts eventually end. The family and friends we look forward to spending time with have passed or have families of their own to spend the holidays with. The food our mouth’s water for becomes hard to prepare and the joy of the whole season diminishes.

Many seniors still find great pleasure in family gatherings, they are still invited to partake in the fun. Many seniors have family that come pick them up, cook for them, include them in the festivities, and see they make it safely home and tucked in to their beds. On the other hand, some seniors lack the family to do such wonderful things and they find themselves depressed and lonely, reminiscing about what the holidays used to bring. Let’s all take the time this holiday season to remember the ones that might be forgotten, as well as those who struggle with holidays due to the loss of loved ones and traditions. Agingcare.com provides a few simple things you can do to help those struggling during this time of year.

1. Listen and understand when they want to talk, even if the talk is negative. They are likely mourning many of the losses mentioned above. Don’t imply they are whining or that they should snap out of it. They can’t. Your empathy is vital here. Try to put yourself into their place.
Delivery Available 6 Days A Week Monday - Saturday
O’Brien’s Pharmacy
2. Remind them how important they are as a part of your own celebration and that of the entire family. Be especially careful not to act like what you do for them is a duty. This can be tough, as your tired body language can show through. However, again, put yourself in their place. They may feel useless and burdensome. Remind them they are loved.

3. Holiday cards often bring bad news, and diminish in quantity. I used to sit with my mom when she opened her cards, because nine out of ten cards brought news of illness or death. She was very aware, too, of the people she didn’t hear from. That was one reason I helped her write her own cards. She needed this connection with lifelong friends.
The Veterans’ Assistance Commission provides needed services exclusively to Honorably Discharged Military Veterans & their families. We work with local Veterans’ Service Organizations as well as local, state & federal agencies, to ensure your rights. Services include: Interim and/or emergency veterans’ (financial) assistance, emotional support services, administrative case work, transition center services & VA medical-related transportation services.
4. Help them see that you are trying to simplify the holidays in order to bring back the real meaning of our celebrations. Let them know you are trying to ignore the hype that has increased over the years. Remind them that they taught you that it’s people who count, and thank them for that. 5. If someone is in an assisted living facility or nursing home, check with the local kindergarten or day care centers to see if they can bring children to visit the elders. The freshness of the small children’s presence can help lighten a day for an elder in physical or emotional pain. 6. Check their spiritual home. Visitors, such as those in the Stephen Ministry, which is a program many Christian churches offer, can visit them at home or in a facility. These people undergo considerable training that provides them with tools to listen compassionately and creatively. This can go a long way toward helping with depression over the holidays.

7. Decorate their home or room. 8. Bring traditional baked goods or treats regularly for them and their friends to share.

9. Call their friends and see if they can come to a party. One year, I was able to use a small conference room at the nursing home for a New Year’s Eve party for my parents and their friends.
Family Owned & Operated Since 1906 Colin A. Jensen - Funeral Director
10. Make their dinner table special. Whether they are at home or in a facility, try to make the table festive with some appropriate colors and themes. 11. Spend time with them. This is the most important thing you can do. Look at holiday photos or videos with them and leave them photos in a handy place so they can walk down memory lane when they are alone. Play music. Listen to them reminisce. Remember, your time is the most valuable thing you can give someone for the holiday. You just might make more of an impact than you can even realize was possible.
