Elderly Especially Susceptible To The Heat Many people might choose a nice, hot day over a blustery, cold afternoon. However, excessively hot days can not only feel uncomfortable, but they can also prove life-threatening. Elderly men & women, in particular, are susceptible to the effects of hot temperatures. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people ages 65 & older are more prone to heat stroke & heat-related stress than those of other ages. Seniors’ bodies are not able to adjust to sudden changes in temperature as quickly as younger people’s. A chronic condition that affects the body’s response to heat, as well as taking certain prescription medications also may play a role in seniors’ susceptibility to the heat. The City of Sacramento Department of Parks & Recreation says that around 370 deaths from heat-related illnesses occur across the United States each year. Nearly half of those deaths are people who are 65 & older. Prolonged heat exposure can take quite a toll on the average person. Factor in the more delicate health of many seniors, & the hot weather can be quite dangerous. Further compounding the problem is higher energy costs. Seniors living on fixed incomes may not be able to afford to turn on air conditioners because of the power draw. There are different types of heat-related injuries, though heat exhaustion & heat stroke are the most common. Here are signs that a person may be experiencing one or the other. Heat Exhaustion Heat Stroke * weakness * extremely high body * tiredness temperature (over 105 F) * heavy sweating * red, hot and dry skin * paleness * absence of sweat * dizziness * nausea * throbbing headache * vomiting * dizziness * fainting * nausea * fast, weak pulse rate * headache * fast and shallow breathing What to do Friends or family members should check in with an elderly relative or friend when the weather is especially warm to ensure they’re safely handling the heat. In addition, people of all ages can take the following precautions to keep cool when the temperatures rise. * Drink cool, nonalcoholic beverages. Water & diluted fruit juices can help rehydrate the body quickly. * Restrict physical activity. * Take a cool shower or bath or wipe yourself down with a damp cloth. * Seek an air-conditioned environment. For those who won’t or can’t turn on the air conditioning, visit a shopping mall or library to keep cool. * Wear lightweight clothing. * Try to remain indoors during the hottest hours of the day. * Wear hats or use an umbrella to shield your head from sunshine outdoors. * Eat cool foods, but avoid extremely cold foods. Otherwise you risk the chance of developing stomach cramps. * Do not do laundry or turn on appliances that contribute to extra indoor heat. The heat is nothing to take lightly, especially when it comes to your health.

Natural Ways To Reduce Lyme Disease Risk
BE A BLOOD DONOR.
The great outdoors can be a wonder to behold. Parks, nature preserves or even some time spent in the backyard can help men, women & children reconnect with nature. While there is plenty to enjoy about the great outdoors, certain hazards are lurking. Ticks can be both a nuisance & a danger, potentially contributing to illnesses like Lyme disease. Recognizing the dangers of ticks & how to avoid tick bites can help people reduce their risk for contracting Lyme disease. Ticks are part of the arachnid family, but unlike spiders, ticks attach to the skin of an animal & suck its blood. Ticks can be found just about anywhere, but they tend to gravitate toward wooded areas or tall grasses, which offer them protection & good vantage points to find an animal host. Ticks are routine problems for dogs that are not properly protected. But ticks also prey on humans. Many tick bites are harmless & do not require treatment. However, if bitten by a tick that is carrying Lyme disease people may need to take an antibiotic to prevent any lasting health effects. As a result, people should always visit a doctor when bitten by a tick. Pesticide repellants are some of the more effective & well-known methods to prevent tick bites & subsequent side effects. Those who prefer to go a more natural route can take the following precautionary measures. • Watch habitats. Steer clear of grassy, wooded & brushy areas. Ticks also prefer humid conditions. • Stick to trails when hiking or walking to avoid brushing up against areas where ticks may be hiding out. • Wear proper clothing. Light-colored clothing makes it easier to spot ticks that may have made their way onto a person. Tuck pants into socks, as ticks tend to climb onto hosts from the ground up. • Protect hair & heads. Wear a hat and/or keep long hair contained so that it isn’t an attractive hiding spot. • Shower immediately. After coming in from areas known for ticks, shower & launder clothing immediately. While showering, do a spot inspection looking for ticks on your body. • Clean up the yard. Make your yard less habitable to ticks by mowing the grass regularly & removing leaf litter & trim shrubs. Also, use wood chips or gravel to serve as a barrier between lawns & wooded areas of the property. • Use natural oils. Ticks may not like the smell of garlic, lemon, eucalyptus, lavender, & rosemary, among others. Dotting your body with these infused oils may make you less attractive to ticks.

Control Mold When Using Air Conditioning Exposure to mold in a home can be hazardous, leading to any number of adverse health effects, including respiratory distress. Certain strains of mold may release mycotoxins & can cause bleeding in the lungs & pneumonia. Mold can grow in any dark & damp spot, which makes air conditioning units prime locations for mold proliferation. Mold spores can be circulated through a home via a central air system or window air conditioning unit. Mold spores in the air are very easy to inhale, especially for young children & the elderly. Air conditioners also are susceptible to mold growth. Preventing mold from becoming a problem means being in tune to indicators that mold may be present, & then taking the necessary actions to eradicate that mold & preventing future growth. Visible mold or a musty smell when operating the air conditioner are prime indicators of a problem. If you suspect mold has infiltrated your air conditioning system, consider these tips. • Keep equipment clean. Routinely clean dirt & debris out of air conditioning ducts & equipment. Pay special attention to organic matter, such as dirt, that may come in from outdoors. • Eliminate water sources. Standing water presents an ideal breeding ground for mold. If there is excess water present in or around the system, have your AC unit serviced. • Change the filter. Manufacturers recommend changing an HVAC filter & window unit filters once every three months. This can prevent mold growth & reduce allergens like dust & dirt that circulate through the air. • Clean up the mold. Homeowners may be able to clean up a minor mold problem, but larger issues are best left to a professional. Exposure to mold can put a person & the entire household at risk, especially if mold spores are disrupted. Air conditioning repair & mold-removal specialists are better equipped to clean & contain mold. Air conditioning can be a life-saver during the summer. But men & women must make sure mold doesn’t become a problem while their AC systems are in use.

How To Protect Yourself From Theft Anyone who has had their home broken into or been the victim of identity theft understands just how unsettling it can be to have their privacy invaded. To think that a stranger has rooted through your stuff may be even more upsetting than losing the stolen items. Data from various sources, including the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, points to identity theft as one of the fastest-growing crimes in the United States. Approximately 15 million U.S. residents have their identities used fraudulently each year, with financial losses totaling upwards of $50 billion. Perhaps thanks to the prevalence of Web-based accounts & transactions, as well as reliance on digital services, identity fraud & other types of theft have increased in frequency. According to a 2013 report from Javelin Strategy & Research, an incident of identity fraud occurs every three seconds. Just about anyone is vulnerable to an identity/data attack. It’s crucial to take steps to protect yourself from identity theft & other forms of theft. Limit sharing on social media - Many people have no qualms about posting personal data via social networking sites, even though they aren’t taking the precautions necessary to keep that information safe. Always keep your privacy settings at the highest level, & never share sensitive personal information such as your birth date, address or financial information. Invest in security software - Invest in or upgrade your spyware & security applications. In addition, install any security updates authorized by your operating system or the apps you use. Create strong passwords - Skip those easy passwords that just about anyone who knows a little about you can guess. Instead, choose complex passwords that feature a combination of letters, numbers & symbols. Many passwords are case sensitive, so use a combination of uppercase & lowercase letters as well. Use only secured wi-fi networks - Avoid sharing personal information when using unsecured networks, such as those available at restaurants or coffee shops. Exercise caution with email - Opening emails or clicking on attachments & links could initiate spyware, & doing so may even infect your computer with a virus. Also, don’t be fooled by emails requesting personal information. Such messages are typically sent by fraudulent people masquerading as legitimate businesses, such as credit card companies looking to “verify” account information. Keep personal belongings out of sight - Be mindful of personal items & information at all times. Shred mail that contains account numbers, & store checks & bank account paperwork & files where they can’t be seen. Avoid logging on to personal accounts in public & when your sensitive information might be visible to others. Theft can be scary, & anytime personal belongings or information is stolen, it can make a person feel violated. Start taking steps to better safeguard your personal data.

Sometimes I am asked the question, “Why have a funeral?” The death of a loved one, for most of us, is the hardest event that we as humans will face. God our father tells us in the Holy Scriptures that Jesus wept. Jesus wept at the tomb of his friend Lazarus; & in doing so, God through Christ, understands the pain & sadness that we experience when someone we love dies. So there is importance in our rites of visitation & funeral services. The importance of the visitation is in allowing a time for the community to respond to our pain of loss & separation from our loved one. It’s an opportunity to receive comfort & support from those around us. It’s also an opportunity to allow the healing balm of God to be applied, remembering the words of Christ, when three or more are gathered in my name, there I am. Most visitations occur in the evening, allowing for adequate time for necessary conversations to occur as well as sacred moments with the deceased. The funeral ceremony, for those of the Judeo-Christian beliefs, is an opportunity to give thanks to God for the creation & life of our loved one. This is accomplished through God’s living word in the scriptures of the Holy Bible, prayers & message of hope. It is also an appropriate opportunity to celebrate the life lived. Allowing us to remember the important lessons & experiences that we learned from our loved one & to carry those forward in our own life. Lastly, there is the opportunity to live into our faith as we take leave from our loved ones physical presence. The body or elements of our loved one are committed to the ground or some other place & the spirit is commended to God. This acknowledges that, in hope & trust, we will never be separated from the love of God through Christ, & the love we have for our loved one, in Christ, can never be broken. So there you have it. The importance of a funeral is to allow time for the community to come to offer love & support; to give thanks to God for the creation of the life of our loved one, & to celebrate that life; & to live into a new reality in exercising our faith. Blessed be The name of the Lord,

Tips For Safe Home Grilling
• Tradition Services • Cremation Services • Pre-Planning Services
Millions of grilling enthusiasts take to their backyards each year to cook delicious foods over an open flame. Grilling is embedded in the history of many cultures, & to this day many people feel nothing beats the savory flavor characteristic of grilled meats, poultry, seafood, & vegetables. Although many people safely enjoy outdoor barbecues every day, accidents can happen. According to the U.S. Fire Admin., roughly 6,000 grill fires take place on residential property every year in the U.S. Many grilling accidents can be prevented with some safety precautions & a little common sense.
Why Pre-Plan? √ Peace Of Mind √ Personal Choice √ Lower Costs
When grilling, place the grill in a safe location. Grills should be at least 10 feet away from the house when they are in use. Also, keep the grill away from wooden overhangs, garages & porches. Before using a gas grill, inspect it to make sure there are no gas leaks. Ensure hoses are properly connected & that the grill looks in good repair. Use propane & charcoal grills outdoors only. Never bring such grills into your house, even if it seems like there is ample ventilation. Potentially fatal carbon monoxide can build up quickly. Keep children & pets away from the grill area. Grills can be knocked over easily, & kids & pets may burn themselves if they bump into a hot grill. Clean the grill regularly. Grease & fat buildup forms in the tray below the grill & can be quite flammable. By brushing off the grates after each use & periodically removing food & grease buildup, you can prevent flare-ups that may ignite the grill. Always tend the grill while cooking. Walking away for even a minute may lead to accidents. Store unused propane tanks upright at all times to prevent leakage. Keep them outdoors & beyond the reach of children. Never smoke near propane cylinders & never move a lit grill. Keep a fire extinguisher handy in the event of a flare-up. A hose may not prove effective on a grease fire. It’s also important to emphasize food safety. Invest in a food thermometer so you can test the internal temperature of foods & prevent foodborne illnesses. Grilling is a great & flavorful way to cook. But safety must remain a priority when grilling.
