Popular Candies Share Sweet Words Of Love There are many ways to say, “I love you,.” For Valentine’s Day celebrants, various sentiments may be expressed with candy - particularly candy hearts. Candy hearts, also called Conversation Hearts® & Sweethearts® (similarly Love Hearts in the UK), are sweet, chalky confections that have been around for more than 100 years. The conversation about candy hearts began back in 1847 when Oliver Chase, a Boston pharmacist, wanted to get in on the apothecary lozenge craze that was popular at the time. Lozenges were common remedies for sore throats & bad breath, & were growing in popularity as a convenient medical treatment. Chase invented a machine that could roll out lozenge dough & press it into perfect discs, a timesaving improvement on the manual process used until then. Chase eventually abandoned making lozenges & the pharmacy business, ultimately realizing his machine could be used to make candies. He formed the New England Confectionery Company & began producing what would eventually be known as NECCO wafers. Wanting to get in on his brother’s candy empire, Daniel Chase saw an opportunity to build on the growing popularity of Valentine’s cards by printing words on candy with vegetable dye during the cutting process. In 1866, conversation candies began as round confections & were much bigger than today’s heart varieties. It wouldn’t be until 1902 that conversation candy hearts became available. Through the years, the candies became smaller & the sentiments expressed on the hearts have been updated to stay current. Phrases like “LOL,” “BFF” & “Text me” have replaced some less modern sentiments. At the height of the candies’ popularity, NECCO estimated that it made nearly 100,000 pounds of the hearts each day throughout the year in preparation for Valentine’s Day. In 2019, NECCO filed for bankruptcy & did not produce the iconic candy hearts while it was being purchased by an investment company called Round Hill Investments, LLC. Round Hill decided to sell NECCO to another candy company. Fortune magazine reported Spangler Candy Co., which took over rights to NECCO’s iconic brands, would manufacture candy hearts in 2020. Similar conversation hearts also are available through Brach’s candy company. Candy hearts have long been a way to share sweet words of affection & a sugary treat with the ones you love.

Recognize Signs Of Heart Attack In Women Many people are familiar with the image of a heart attack sufferer clutching his or her chest or feeling surprising, tingling sensations in his or her left arm. While those symptoms are common, heart attacks can produce a wide array of symptoms, & some of them may actually be much less apparent than chest pain or tingling in the left arm. That’s especially so for women. The organization Go Red for Women, which highlights women’s heart health during the month of February, advises that many symptoms women can experience when suffering from heart disease may be overlooked or misunderstood as signs of less threatening conditions. However, jaw pain, nausea, pressure, & sweating all may be indicative of a heart attack. A failure to recognize that & act quickly could prove fatal. The American Heart Assoc. says that heart disease is the foremost killer of women in the U.S. The Heart & Stroke Foundation says heart disease & stroke kill 31,000 women in Canada annually. Despite those figures, many women are unaware of the threat of heart disease & its symptoms. Heart attack occurs when blood flow to the heart is blocked by a buildup of a substance called plaque in the coronary arteries. Heart attack can strike any woman, though women who deal with high stress, are overweight or are heavy smokers are at the greatest risk. Symptoms of heart attack in women generally are more subtle than in men. These include but are not limited to: • shortness of breath as though you just ran a marathon • a feeling of a squeezing rope tied around the upper back • dizziness • lightheadedness or actual fainting • unusual fatigue • neck, jaw, shoulder, upper back, or abdominal discomfort • indigestion • perspiration How heart attacks are different for women: Women tend to have blockages not only in their main arteries, but in the smaller ones that supply blood to the heart. This is a condition called coronary microvascular disease, says the Mayo Clinic, & it may be why symptoms are more vague & not as apparent in women as they are in men. Women also can have symptoms while resting or even when asleep, & emotional stress can trigger heart attack symptoms in women. A woman’s risk for heart disease increases if she has diabetes, has experienced mental stress or depression, smokes, has gone through menopause, has had complications during a pregnancy, has an inflammatory disease, and/or is physically inactive. Women of all ages should take heart disease seriously & schedule a checkup with a doctor to discuss risk & heart health. Women who suspect or notice any symptoms of heart attack should not hesitate to call for help. If you suspect you are having a heart attack, call 9-1-1 immediately; do not drive yourself. The Dangers Of Added Sugars Sugar is often seen as a guilty pleasure that’s only to be enjoyed on rare occasions. But that reputation is not entirely accurate, as sugar is naturally occurring in many healthy foods, including fruit. Naturally occurring sugars do not pose a threat to overall health. However, added sugars, which the American Heart Assoc. notes can be found in soft drinks, candy, pies, & fruit drinks, can contribute to weight gain. Obesity is a risk for cardiovascular disease, which means that added sugars can adversely affect heart health. One of the difficulties with added sugars is that they are often present in foods & beverages generally considered healthy. Fruit juice, for example, seems like a healthy addition to any diet. However, the AHA notes that many juices contain added sugars from fruit juice concentrates. Such juices may not be seen as such, but they can be as compromising to one’s overall health as soft drinks or other beverages generally considered to be unhealthy. The AHA acknowledges that part of the difficulty with navigating one’s way through added sugars is that these unhealthy additives go by many names. They are listed among the ingredients on food packaging. Both the AHA & the HMS recommend scanning ingredients lists for words that end in “ose,” such as fructose, dextrose, glucose, & maltose. Those are some examples of added sugars, as are high fructose corn syrup, molasses, corn sweetener, syrup, & honey. The AHA recommends limiting consumption of added sugars & offers guidelines for both men & women. Men should limit their added sugar consumption to a maximum of nine teaspoons per day, while women should not consume more than six teaspoons per day. Understanding the dangers of added sugar can help men & women protect their overall health & lower their risk for cardiovascular disease. More information is available www.heart.org.

Not too many months back, Diann & I had the opportunity to travel to Israel to be part of “The Deeper Look” Tour with Moody Bible Institute. This was truly a wonderful tour & study of Biblical sites, not to mention the experiences of having the Bible come to life. We arrived in Tel-Aviv & made our way northward to the ancient crusader fortress at Akko. This fortress served as the “gateway” for crusader pilgrims visiting Jerusalem. Shiloh, where the Ark of the Covenant resided for 369 years & the place where Deborah’s prayer for a child was heard by God, is in my opinion indescribable. We think of European towns & villages being old; however, to sit, stand by, or sit on the foundation stones of Shiloh was nothing less than fulfilling. Herod’s Spring, where Gideon rallied his troops & God thinned them to just 300, before battling the Philistines, speaks of our need to be obedient to God. All of these places will have your mind wandering, trying to imagine what it was like, the hands who constructed, the prayerful cries to God, & the hearts of those who were open to God’s call. Among other places we traveled, were visits to the Dead Sea area, Jerusalem & the Sea of Galilee. It was at Galilee that we had an experience that “spoke” to me. We were “sailing” on the Sea & enjoying a teaching from Dr. Michael Rydelnik on Matthew 8. We all experience storms in our lives. Some are little storms that pass quickly; some are big & move slowly; but the truth is we all have storms. In this Biblical accounting, Jesus had finished teaching when He & the disciples got into a boat to go to the other side. Jesus fell asleep on a cushion at the rear of the boat. Well... the disciples became fearful as the wind was strong & water was breaching the sides. They woke Jesus, saying, “Lord save us! We’re going to drown” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then He got up & rebuked the winds & the waves, & it was completely calm. The disciples were amazed & asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds & the waves obey him!” This man is Jesus; Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. For followers of Christ, we just finished celebrating the observance of His birth. We are reminded in scripture that He who keeps Israel will never slumber nor sleep. That comes from the book of Psalms, the 121 Psalm. God is the One who keeps Israel. While Jesus may have gone to sleep that late afternoon, He knew that there would be a storm, He knew all the storms that were happening that day. He knows all that storms that happen today. He is God. He who keeps Israel will never slumber nor sleep. When we experience tragic, stormy times in our life, the same Jesus that was with the disciples, is the same Jesus that we can count on in our times of tribulation. Jesus knew all the storms that were happening on that day; & he knows the storms we face today. We need not be afraid, just trust in Him. So, while we were receiving this message floating on the Sea of Galilee, a rain shower blew in, we watched it rain in that same area where Jesus calmed the sea & the wind. The pictures show the rain & the parting sky, maybe the sky looked like that when

I do know that we have a covenant keeping God, who loves you & me so much, that He sent his son to die our death & then raised Him to new life, so that whomever believes in Him will have eternal life. Directions 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. 2. Mix yeast, warm water, salt & vegetable oil in a medium bowl. Add flour until it makes a stiff dough (about 1 cup). 3. Knead dough with clean hands until it stretches easily without making a hole. If dough is too sticky, add 2 T. flour at a time. 4. Spray a cookie sheet with nonstick cooking spray. Spread dough on pan to 1/8 to 1/4-inch thickness. Set aside & let dough rise. 5. Slice mushrooms. Spray small skillet with nonstick cooking spray. SautĂŠ mushrooms over medium heat until tender. (Skip if using canned). 6. Squeeze thawed frozen spinach to remove excess water. 7. Poke dough with a fork. Spread with sauce, add toppings, cheese & seasoning. 8. Cook for 20-25 minutes or until dough is cooked through & lightly brown with melted cheese on top.
