END TAX PAYER GOUGE Belvidere voters need to have the curtain pulled back on the costs of providing wages and perks to the Mayor and City Clerks. They have the chance to end the costly liability of paying them lifetime pensions when they leave office. Voters were never asked if they wanted to provide them - politicians just helped themselves, and now that fund is less than 70% funded. We paid Mayor Chamberlain $71,028 last year, another $8,274 for health, dental and life insurance. Add $10,335 for his pension for a total $89,637. City Clerk Arco was paid $60,101, another $23,671 for health, dental and life. Pension benefit costs were $8,745. Together we paid $182,154 to cover two elected, non-career offices for one year. No question, either could afford to buy their own IRA or 401K account. Instead, taxpayers are stuck providing pension benefits for life. Pensions paid the previous City Clerk and Ex-Mayor Brereton since 2001 combined have cost $369,250 to date. To that fund, they contributed $62,366. The Clerk pension is $21,556 and Mayor Brereton’s Pension is $20,546 yearly, for life. Unacceptable legacy costs for non-career employees in a state where $130 billion is owed career employee pensions. Consider: (1) Pensions are not entitlements for politicians, but how they protect theirs, even as Americans are losing their retirement security. (2) Politician pensions paid by the have-nots for the elite few of the political class is indefensible. (3) $130 Billion in Illinois pension debt is not going to be solved by politicians elbow-deep in their pension cookie jar. (4) Politicians have grabbed onto pension and fringes to create careers in elective office. Public service has mutated into self-service. (5) Taxpayers are on the pension hook once a Clerk or Mayor serves two terms - they become “vested”.
