At that time I realized experience matters. For the past 3 years, I gained Clerk experience by serving as the Deputy Village Clerk and the current Village Clerk in Union. Celebrating a holiday can be challenging for those with diabetes, as sweet treats are a part of many holiday celebrations. Come Valentine’s Day, chocolates, candy & rich desserts can often be found on the menu, which can prove problematic for those who have to watch their blood-glucose levels. Diabetics may be tempted to indulge in too many sugary foods on Valentine’s Day. Fortunately individuals do not have to put their health in jeopardy in the name of Valentine’s Day, as there are healthy ways to celebrate with some minor tweaks. • Focus on fun, not food. Rather than making food the focus of the day, shift your attention to all the fun things you can do with your valentine. Fill the day with activities such as ice skating or sightseeing. Even though the weather may be cold, it’s possible to enjoy the great outdoors. Dress appropriately & enjoy a walk in the park, or do something out of the ordinary, like sledding. If you must retreat indoors, watch a romantic movie. • Plan ahead when changing your diet. It’s often possible to work small amounts of a particular dessert or food into your normal meal plan by adjusting what you eat for the rest of the day. If you plan ahead for a bite of chocolate, you can balance out sugar levels by eliminating something else. Keep tabs on your sugar levels throughout the day, & always weigh the benefits & drawbacks of the foods you eat. • Include smart substitutions. Many favorite foods are available in low-sugar or sugarless varieties that are diabetic-friendly. Lean toward low-carb offerings & foods that are relatively low in fat. Baking your own treats or cooking your own meals will give you greater control over the ingredients. Moderation is key when managing diabetes around Valentine’s Day. Place a greater emphasis on time spent together, entertainment and socialization rather than potentially unhealthy treats.

Seniors face an array of issues as they climb in age. Common, well known problems that they face are injury and lifestyle changes that may be directly related to those injuries. However, what many people fail to see is the progression towards isolation & the lack of social interaction that many seniors experience. Often times, isolation is a direct result of some larger medical or lifestyle issue. Some seniors become isolated due to mobility constraints, the passing of close family & friends, not having relatives that live nearby, & living alone. Additionally, many seniors withdraw because of hearing or vision loss, incontinence, & depression. Lack of social interaction can have a big impact on an individual & can negatively affect them both physically & mentally. It is said that 20% of adults over 70 suffer from depression. A once active older adult that now lives alone & rarely interacts with others may eventually develop depression Maintaining a healthy social interaction level has been connected with an overall healthier lifestyle by many studies. First & foremost, staying socially active can greatly benefit an individual’s mental health. A socially active person is less likely to be depressed & has a generally better outlook on life. Social interaction has also been correlated with a slower rate of memory loss & a lower chance of developing dementia. It has also been found that maintaining better nutrition is more prevalent in individuals that stay socially active. These individuals tend to eat more & better meals than those that isolate themselves or live alone. Multiple studies have also revealed that an active social life can boost the immune system, lower blood pressure, & reduce physical pain. Loneliness is also linked to higher blood pressure in older adults. Seniors should make social interaction a priority in their lives. There are many avenues & resources that seniors can tap into in order to keep socially active. They can volunteer, join clubs & groups, visit The Keen Age Center, move to retirement communities, attend a church, learn new skills, & learn to use the internet. Local assisted living communities often times have extensive social activity programs available for their residents & outside seniors. Simply finding a hobby can really positively affect an individual. There are also many state funded programs that offer transportation for very cheap to seniors so they can attend activities or run errands. There are solutions for these problems if you have the right resources. Reach out to organizations that deal regularly with seniors to learn what is available in your area.

Groundhog Facts Every February 2nd, people across the country anxiously await the groundhog’s weather forecast. Should the groundhog see his shadow, it is six more weeks of winter. If the shadow goes unseen, spring will arrive ahead of schedule. For some, Groundhog Day is the only time a person actually lays eyes on the animal doing the prognosticating. But there’s more to groundhogs than their ability to forecast the weather. * Groundhogs do little in that burrow during their winter rest. They go into profound hibernation, where their metabolic rates & their body temperatures drop considerably. Many groundhogs begin to come out of hibernation naturally around early- to mid-February. * The scientific name of the groundhog is Marmota monax. Groundhogs, also known as woodchucks, are closely related to squirrels & actually can climb trees & swim. * Groundhogs are herbivores, mostly feeding on whatever plant material they can find. Because they like crops, many farmers view them as pests. On occasion, groundhogs will scavenge for & eat insects. * The burrows made by the animals have several chambers & different entrances & exits. It may be challenging to find a groundhog’s entry point to your yard as a result. * On average, a groundhog lives 3-6 years in the wild. In captivity, a groundhog can live to around age 10. * A wildlife biologist once measured the inside volume of a typical woodchuck burrow. It was estimated that if the hole was filled with wood shavings instead of dirt, that woodchuck could chuck about 700 lbs. of wood. * Groundhogs are often mistaken for other animals. In fact, the “gopher” that was seen in the film “Caddyshack” was actually a groundhog. * A groundhog can produce a high-pierced whistle when frightened, & is nicknamed “whistlepig.” * Groundhog fur is not particularly thick or warm, so they have never really been prized for their coat.

Spaying & Neutering Promotes Pet Health The number of animals living in shelters across the country is a testament to the overpopulation problem regarding cats & dogs. The Humane Society of the United States estimates that between 6 & 8 million homeless animals enter shelters each year. More than half of those animals are never adopted, & some may live out their lives in shelters or be euthanized. In addition to animals living in shelters, there also are thousands of stray animals living with illnesses or discomfort from injuries. Spaying & neutering can not only help remedy the number of animals that have no homes, but it also provides several other benefits to animals. One of the more difficult problems to arise when pets are not spayed or neutered is the animals’ tendency to stray away from home in search of mates. Such wandering makes them susceptible to injury, such as those incurred when animals are hit by cars. Hormones can cause both dogs & cats to act more aggressively. They may get into altercations with other animals or even people. Stray pets can kill or injure wildlife as well, or suffer their own injuries when confronting wildlife. Spaying & neutering helps alleviate these problems. According to the organization PAWS: People Helping Animals, a group that assists with low-cost spay or neuter surgeries, spaying or neutering can reduce or eliminate the risk for many diseases & conditions in pets, such as breast cancer, uterine infections, prostate cancer, & testicular cancer. While animals may still be protective of their homes, altering surgeries can reduce aggression levels & marking of territory, too. This reduces damage to property or the potential of biting or scratching incidences as well. The urge to mate may distract pets & tempt them to roam, making them harder to train & affecting their behavior as a result. Spaying & neutering can reduce these impulses & produce more content pets. The ASPCA strongly recommends spaying or neutering your pet as early as possible, typically before six months of age. Spaying is done on females & involves removing the ovaries & uterus. Neutering is the male surgery & involves the removal of the testicles. These surgeries are performed under general anesthesia & do not require a long hospitalization period. Altering surgeries can be performed by the pet’s veterinarian, while some are done in clinics that specialize in these types of surgeries. The cost of a spay or neuter surgery depends on a pet’s weight, age & gender & whether or not the animal requires vaccinations. Many shelters & adoption centers require neutering & spaying before a newly adopted pet can be taken home. These surgeries will not change the personality of the pet in a negative way & do not cause the animals to become lethargic or gain weight. They can be an asset to fostering a healthy pet & a great companion.
