Registration for returning North Boone School District students incoming grades 1-5 will be handled through a “mail in” registration process again this year. Please watch for your student’s “mail in” registration packet to come home in April. Parents of students in incoming grades 6-12 will need to register their student at walk in registration. Walk in registration will be held again July 26th and August 1st at North Boone High School this year. Please watch for more information.

The Boone County Board is trying to sell you this tax as necessary for use under “Public Safety”. Let’s look at the money from 1999’s .5 % “Public Safety” tax that we voted for to pay back in the form of $9,300,000 in bonds. I was very much in favor of that tax then, but not now. That first tax brought in $23,403,402. At the end of this year, $12,367,941 will have been used to pay off those bonds and the remainder put in the general fund; and yet that first .5% will be with us forever and now allocated to the general fund instead of “Public Safety”. That leaves over an $11 million dollar surplus. If the 1999 .5% tax were still to be used for Public Safety (as the voters voted for), we would not need another tax for public safety. The French have an old custom called “une loterie d’amour,” which is a drawing for love. Recognizing the threat that heart disease poses is a great first step for women who want to avoid becoming one of the hundreds of thousands of women who lose their lives to heart disease each year. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration offers the following advice to women looking to prioritize their heart health. 1. Consume a heart-friendly diet. Thanks to food labels, it’s easier than ever for women to consume hearthealthy diets. When examining labels, look for foods that are low in sodium & sugar. When planning meals, avoid foods that are high in trans fats. In 2015, the FDA ruled that trans fats were not recognized as safe for use in human foods & gave manufacturers 3 years to remove them from their products. The Cleveland Clinic advises consumers to check labels for “partially hydrogenated oils,” which are a hidden source of trans fats. In addition, the Cleveland Clinic notes that foods such as cakes, pies, cookies, biscuits, microwavable breakfast sandwiches, and many types of crackers contain trans fats. 2. Take existing conditions seriously. Certain conditions can increase a woman’s risk for heart disease. While women may not be able to turn back the clocks and prevent these conditions from developing, they can take them for the serious threat they are and do their best to manage them. High blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol can increase a woman’s risk for heart disease. Take medications as directed, monitor blood sugar levels if you have diabetes and routinely have your blood pressure and cholesterol tested to ensure any preexisting conditions are not increasing your risk for heart disease. 3. Discuss aspirin intake. The FDA notes that many physicians prescribe aspirin to lower patients’ risk of heart disease, clot-related strokes and other problems related to cardiovascular disease. However, there are risks associated with long-term aspirin use, and such risks should be discussed with a physician. According to the FDA, bleeding in the stomach, bleeding in the brain, kidney failure, and certain types of stroke are some of the potential side effects of long-term aspirin use. Such side effects may never appear, but the risk that they might makes discussing the pros and cons of aspirin well worth it. Women can learn more about heart disease by visiting www.fda.gov.

In Loving Memory Foster Lampert 84, passed away January 19, 2018 in Vero Beach, FL. He formerly served in the U.S. Army working with the Air Force (SCARWAF), was a union painter and carpenter, operated a remodeling & decorating business, and was most known for being a ballroom dance instructor. Originally a farm boy, he was born in Garden Prairie, IL to Harold and Grace Lampert. He owned and operated several dance studios, then the Tiara Ballroom in Bloomington, IL where he met his wife of 26 years, Judi. They lived in Asheville, NC for 20 years before moving to Indian River Estates in Vero Beach, FL. He was a 9 year survivor of pancreatic cancer and whipple surgery. A memorial service will be held at Indian River estates at 1:30 PM on Sunday, February 4, 2018.

Karen R. Busch Cherry Valley, IL Karen R. Busch, 65, of Cherry Valley, passed away peacefully, Monday, January 29, 2018 in her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born July 25, 1952 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Edmond and Rose Kraft. Karen married Donald Busch on November 14, 1981 in Las Vegas at the Famous Little White Chapel. Karen and Don lived their lives “Forever in Blue Jeans”. Karen was foremost a devoted mother, making sure her kids were always taken care of, if it were tending to sick children or those long phone conversations, listening to life issues, she always helped you through it. Karen enjoyed shopping, bowling, and collecting dolls. She was known for having a sweet tooth. Karen enjoyed riding her bike and taking walks. Karen is loved and missed by her husband, Donald; her mother, Rose (Jack Campbell) Kraft; her children, Tammy (James) Colver, Tracy (Edward) Tsikretsis, and Michael (Amber) Busch; eleven grandchildren, one great-grandchild; siblings, Steve (Dorothy) Kraft, Debbie Kraft, Christine Lewis; and five nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Edmond. A visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00 PM., Friday, February 2, 2018 at Anderson Funeral and Cremation Services, 218 W. Hurlbut Ave., Belvidere, IL 61008. A funeral service will be held at 9:30 AM, Saturday, February 3, 2018 at Anderson Funeral and Cremation Services with Rev. Allan Buss officiating.
