NOTICE TO BELVIDERE TOWNSHIP RESIDENTS
We would like to share some information with you to help you better understand the way our snow removal system works and to help keep you all safe this winter. Weather Conditions - The weather plays a huge factor in how long it takes to remove the snow/ice. How much, how long it snows, weight of the snow (wet, heavy snow takes much longer to remove than a few inches of light, fluffy snow) all factor into technique and time. Wind and temperature can also make plowing hard or even impossible to keep roads safe/open in some cases. Routes - Our drivers have specific routes they are assigned each time it snows. Unfortunately, someone is always first and someone is always last. These routes are laid out to make our snow removal go as quickly as possible. Mailboxes - Your mailboxes take a beating in the winter from the wet, heavy snow and slush. Your mailbox, by law, should be mounted on a wood post (not steel or brick). Check to make sure it is not starting to decay/rot at or below the ground. Also, make sure the screws or lag bolts are tight that hold it to the post. If your mailbox gets knocked down it will be up to the driver and the road commissioner to determine if it was a result of snow coming off the plow or if the snowplow hit it. If the driver hits your mailbox it will be replaced with a standard wood post and mailbox. Marking the Edge of Your Yard - Some residents like to mark the edge of the road to keep traffic and snowplows from damaging their yard. If you choose to do so it must be done with fiberglass marking posts (kept one foot off the road to help with the snow removal). Steel posts will not be tolerated. If a steel post gets broken or bent it can do serious damage to tires, undersides of vehicles, snowplows, etc. which the homeowner may be held liable. Right of Way/Obstructions - The standard right of way in almost all cases is 33 feet from the center of the road way. Any obstructions in the right of way (rocks, landscape material, fences, bushes, etc.) should be removed. If there is any damage caused to a snowplow from obstructions in the right of way the homeowner may be liable. Cul-de-sacs - If you live in a cul-de-sac, the snow removal procedure goes as follows: During the initial snow the snowplow will make one, sometimes two passes around the outside of the cul-de-sac pushing the snow towards the middle. After the snow has ended and the roads are clear, the snowplow will come back and clean the cul-de-sac. It is up to the determination of the driver where to put the snow in order to make the cleaning of the cul-de-sac the quickest and most economic. Some residents may end up with more snow in their yard than others. If you wish to mark the edge of the road with fiberglass posts, please keep them at least 14 feet apart so the snowplow can push snow in between them without damaging the markers. Driveways - Unfortunately when plowing snow you will end up with snow at the end of your driveway. Our drivers do what they can to keep this at a minimum. Pushing snow across the road or leaving the snow from your driveway in the road is illegal. If there is damage done to a snowplow or someone’s vehicle, the homeowner can be liable. Also, if you pile snow at the end of your driveway, please do so by putting the snow on the right side of your driveway when you are facing the street. This will minimize the amount that gets knocked back into your driveway when the snowplow goes by. Stuck Vehicles - If you are out driving in the bad weather and your vehicle becomes stuck, snowplow drivers can not assist in pulling you out. We can not be held liable if we should do damage to your vehicle. You will have to call a tow truck or other option to assist you. If you have any more questions, not addressed here, feel free to contact the township office at 815-544-2029. Please know that your proper preparations will help to avoid problems for all of us. It is the township’s goal to keep the roads as safe as we can for you this winter. Drive safe and think twice before trying to pass a snowplow. Help Make Your Poinsettias Last Longer Poinsettias are synonymous with the holiday season. These colorful plants brighten up homes with their vibrant hues in variations of red, white & pink, making them a holiday decoration many people cannot live without. While they’re most visible during the often chilly holiday season, poinsettias prefer warm weather. Poinsettias are native to Central America & originally flourished in an area of southern Mexico. The Aztecs used the plant for decorative & medicinal purposes. The poinsettia may have remained a regional plant if not for the efforts of Joel Roberts Poinsett, who was the first U.S. Ambassador to Mexico under President James Madison. Poinsett, who would later found the Smithsonian Institution, had a love of botany & became enamored with the brilliant red plants he saw in Mexico. Eventually, Poinsett began growing the plants at home in South Carolina, and friends & others soon coveted them. Poinsettias are beautiful & the bracts (modified leaves) can be vibrantly colored. That signature vibrancy is why many people would like to preserve their poinsettias to last beyond the New Year, which is possible with the right care. The following are some tips, courtesy of Mother Nature’s Network, Habersham Gardens, Oregon Live, & Phoenix Flower Shops, to keep poinsettias thriving past the holiday season. • Start with healthy plants that have full leaves, bracts & deep colors. • Poinsettias do best when the temperature is 65-75º F. Temperatures below that or drafts from cold windows can cause leaves to drop. • Position the plant in a room that gets indirect sunlight for at least six hours per day. If direct sunlight can’t be avoided, diffuse the light with a sheer curtain. • Poinsettias need well-drained soil. Overwatering or allowing roots to sit in wet soil can cause the leaves to fall off prematurely. Water thoroughly only when the pot looks dry. In households with temperatures around 70º F, the plant should be watered about once a week. • Fertilize the plant after the blooming season with a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer. • Try placing poinsettias in or near a bathroom, as they prefer high humidity. It may be possible to get poinsettias to rebloom next season. Allow the poinsettias to dry out a little more in the spring. In May, cut about four inches from each stem to produce a lush, full plant during the winter. The plants can be moved outside in June and during the summer, but keep them away from direct sunlight. Return the poinsettias indoors around October. Make sure the plants get at least 12 hours of darkness per day for around eight weeks in October & November. This will help them develop a deep hue and bloom on time for Christmas.

Get The Facts About The Cold & Flu
The common cold & influenza are two contagious viruses that many people may be all too aware of. Although colds & flu can be contracted any time of the year, winter tends to be a prime time for cold & flu outbreaks, as more time spent indoors in close proximity to others provides an easy way for viruses to pass from one person to another. Despite how common these illnesses can be, there seems to be no shortage of misinformation concerning prevention & treatment of the viruses. Those who think they know all about a cold or the flu can still benefit from a refresher course, which may even debunk some prevailing myths about both ailments. Cold - Colds are relatively minor infections of the throat & nose that are caused by more than 200 different viruses. Rhinovirus is the most common cause, which accounts for between 10% & 40% of infections, advises the American Lung Assoc. Adults get an average of 2-4 colds per year, while children suffer 6-8 colds annually. In fact, in the U.S., colds account for more visits to the doctor than any other condition, says the ALA. The Cleveland Clinic states colds are contracted from inhalation of microscopic particles in the air or from contact with contaminated surfaces. Symptoms can include runny nose, sneezing & nasal congestion, often with sore throat, mild cough, mild aches/ fatigue, & fever in youngsters. Influenza - The flu is a contagious respiratory illness that is caused by the influenza virus. It infects the throat, nose & sometimes the lungs, advises the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention. Like colds, the flu also can be spread through droplets made when infected individuals cough or sneeze or by touching infected surfaces. One common misconception about the flu is that it can be contracted from the flu vaccine. This is not true. Harvard Medical School says the flu shot is made from an inactivated virus that can’t transmit infection. People who get sick after receiving a flu vaccination were going to get sick anyway, as it takes a week or two to get protection from the vaccine. Many people assume that because they became sick after getting the vaccine, the flu shot caused their illness. Even though the flu & colds share some symptoms, such as runny nose, sneezing, hoarseness, & cough, the flu is not just a bad cold. While very few people have landed in the hospital with a cold, the flu can be so severe as to require hospitalization. Steering clear of people who are sick, frequently washing hands, sterilizing common surfaces, & getting the flu shot are ways to prevent illness. Antibiotics are not effective against the cold & flu, & antiviral medication can lessen the effects & shorten the duration of flu but may not be able to prevent it. The ALA notes that herbal & mineral products have received a lot of publicity as cold & flu remedies, but insists that such claims are not solidly supported by science. If symptoms do not abate, see a doctor.

Winter has its share of safety hazards, & extra effort may be required to protect one’s health & well-being when the chill creeps in. In recognition of that, the National Safety Council & the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention offer these winter safety tips. 1. Winterize your home to keep interior temperatures comfortable & prevent weather-related damage. Including: Insulating water lines in exterior walls, cleaning gutters, installing weather stripping, & replenishing insulation. 2. Exercise in cold temperatures can put many people at risk of heart attack - especially those who are typically inactive. If you exercise in cold weather, stretch beforehand. Take breaks when shoveling or ask for help. 3. Check carbon monoxide alarms to see if they are working properly. Every year in the U.S., more than 400 people die from & 50,000 are treated for carbon monoxide poisoning. 4. Prepare a winter emergency kit & keep it in your car in case you are stranded in inclement weather. The kit can include food, water, blankets, first-aid supplies, flares, & booster cables, among other items. 5. Wear appropriate clothing for the temperature & precipitation. Layers can be added or removed as needed. 6. Sprinkle sand or cat litter on icy patches of walkways to improve traction. 7. Consider a whole-house generator as an emergency backup if the power goes out in winter. 8. Exercise caution with space heaters & other supplemental heating devices. Turn them off when you leave the room, & do not leave them on overnight while you are sleeping. 9. Slow down when driving in snow. Black ice patches can be difficult to see, & snow can reduce tire traction. 10. Consider switching from gloves to mittens. With fingers touching each other inside mittens, they help generate more body heat than when they’re inside gloves.

After the whirlwind of the holiday season, the season of resolutions takes over. Many people resolve to live healthier, & they may not have to give up their favorite foods to do so. Grazing and overeating tends to increase when the weather cools down. In addition, less powerful sunshine in winter coupled with people bundling up translates into less vitamin D being absorbed by the body. Some researchers believe there is a link between vitamin D deficiency & weight gain as well. To ensure that certain foods do not sabotage healthy eating plans, people can employ some easy modifications & make healthier versions of the foods they like to eat. • Choose crunchy foods. Those who are prone to snacking can reach for noisy foods. These include crunchy items like apples, carrots & pretzels. Scientists say that when people listen to what they are chewing - called the “crunch effect” - they eat less of that item. • Tone down the cream. Delicious dishes like fettuccine alfredo typically are made with lots of butter & cream. Replace cream sauces with a base made of low-fat milk thickened with flour. Increase the flavor with spices. • Fry with care. Use healthy oils like olive or coconut sparingly. Many foods that are traditionally fried also can be lightly coated with cooking spray & baked for a crunchy texture. • Choose sodium-free seasonings. The USCA recommends limiting sodium to less than 1 teaspoon of salt per day. Try options like fresh herbs or lemon juice to add some sodium-free flavor. • Increase fiber content. Fiber helps one feel fuller longer & can also be helpful for digestion & heart health. Choose the “brown” varieties of rice, pasta & breads. • Replace meat with leaner forms of protein. Lean chicken, turkey & pork can replace red meats in many recipes. Some traditional meat dishes, such as burgers, also can be modified using vegetables or seafood. Lean meats dry out quickly, so keep foods moist by watching cooking times. • Stock up on yogurt. Greek & other varieties of yogurt can replace sour cream & mayonnaise in many dishes. Resolving to eat healthier can be easy by making some simple swaps when preparing your favorite foods.
