This letter appeared in the BOONE COUNTY JOURNAL, December 11, 2015 Dear Boone County Residents, Many of you have received a negative mailer about State’s Attorney Michelle Courier from her opponent. In the mailer, her opponent attacks Michelle’s efforts in attacking gang activity, including the civil gang lawsuit. I would like to respond with the truth. THE TRUTH: The gang lawsuit cannot prevent crime. The gang lawsuit gave law enforcement another tool to combat gang activity. Shouldn’t we do everything possible to attack gang activity? THE TRUTH: Even if the gang lawsuit could prevent crime, two-thirds of the cases cited by Michelle’s opponent occurred BEFORE the conclusion of the lawsuit on April 30, 2010, and some would not have been impacted by ANY court order. THE TRUTH: These gang lawsuits do send a message to gang members that we are not going to wait until someone gets shot, robbed, or another kid dies of an overdose from drugs peddled by gangs. THE TRUTH: Thanks to Michelle’s efforts, those same defendants, with the exception of one pending case, were ALL sentenced to prison. Please visit belvidere.net/courier for the sentences. THE TRUTH: Gang-related crime has drastically dropped in Belvidere. In 2008, a year prior to Michelle taking office, there were 690 reports of graffiti. In 2014, there were only 329 reports. (Source: Belvidere Police Department Annual Reports) THE TRUTH: The gang members paid for their own prosecution. The figure used by Michelle’s opponent was the money Michelle sought after the gangs to pay for her attorney fees. Michelle is a salaried employee. She kept track of her hours to get gang members to pay back the County for her time. They paid nearly $11,000 to date. (Source: Boone County Treasurer) THE WHOLE TRUTH: While Michelle has been prosecuting gang members, her opponent, a criminal defense attorney, has been representing and defending gang members and getting paid from taxpayers to do so. (Source: Boone County Circuit Clerk, 2013CF86, 2010CF343, 2010CF346, 2009CH268) AND NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH: The only truth in the mailing about the lawsuit is the statement that Michelle Courier is proud to take on the gang lawsuit and honored to share the positive impact it had on our community with other law enforcement agencies.
