Halloween is a day of costumes, fun and sweets. Many celebrants know that Halloween evolved from ancient Celtic festivals, such as Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest season & the dawn of winter. Celts were no longer spending long days in the pastures, & so they gathered in their homes to tell stories & wait out the winter. When Christianity spread, Halloween became intertwined with a feast day dedicated to the saints & deceased loved ones. “All Hallows Eve,” eventually got shortened to “Hallowe’en,” & then Halloween. Though parts of Halloween history are well-known, there are many additional interesting facts about this beloved holiday that are less widely known. Here are some lesser known Halloween tidbits, courtesy of the websites, The Thought & Expression Company & Random History, as well as “The Halloween Handbook” by Ed Morrow. • The first jack-o-lanterns were made from turnips and beets. Pumpkins were used after Halloween was brought to North America. • The word “witch” is thought to come from the Olde English word “wicce,” meaning “wise woman.” Witches once were held in high regard. • Pumpkins actually are a fruit, a type of squash that is a member of the gourd family. Its cousins include cucumbers, melons, & other squashes. • Trick-or-treating may have originated with a European custom called “souling.” On All Soul’s Day, early Christians would go door-to-door begging for “soul cakes,” which were square pieces of bread with currants. The more cakes a person received, the more prayers he or she would promise to the dead relatives of the cake donors. • Witches may have rubbed a sacred ointment made with a hallucinogenic herb onto their skin. This gave them a feeling of flying, and if they had been fasting, they felt even giddier. Many witches rode on horseback, but those who were poor traveled on foot & carried a broom to launch themselves over streams. • One-quarter of all the candy sold each year is purchased around Halloween. Halloween candy sales in the United States average about $2 billion annually. • Some people still celebrate the ancient Celtic customs of Samhain. Many followers of various pagan religions, such as the Druids and Wiccans, observe this day as a religious festival and a memorial day for their deceased friends. It also is a night to practice various forms of divination. • The owl is a popular Halloween symbol. In Medieval Europe, owls were thought to be witches. • The first-known mention of trick-or-treating was found in print in 1927 in Blackie, Alberta, Canada. • Ireland is believed by many to be the birthplace of Halloween. • Both Salem, Massachusetts, and Anoka, Minnesota, are the self-proclaimed Halloween capitals of the world. • Pumpkins are now carved & displayed as Halloween decorations. Orange is a color of strength & symbolic of the harvest. The largest pumpkin ever grown was more than 1,600 lbs., grown by Joe Jutras of N. Scituate, RI. Halloween is a mysterious time, born of various festivals, rituals & symbolism. Over several centuries, the celebration has evolved into a holiday enjoyed by millions, each in their own different ways. National Physical Therapy Month:
Managing Pain Through Physical Therapy Vs. Opioids Every October, the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) celebrates National Physical Therapy Month (NPTM) to recognize physical therapists (assistants) & how they help individuals improve & restore movement while reducing pain. Each year, in preparation of National Physical Therapy Month the APTA develops a public awareness campaign that focuses on an issue that is relative to the physical therapy community & its patients. This year’s campaign, “Choose the Safer Way to Manage Pain,” focuses on physical therapy as a safer & more appropriate treatment option when managing pain versus the use of prescribed opioid medications. According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), sales of prescription opioids have quadrupled in the U.S., even though “there has not been an overall change in the amount of pain that Americans report.” In response to a growing opioid epidemic, the CDC released opioid prescription guidelines in March 2016. The guidelines recognize that prescription opioids are appropriate in certain cases, including cancer treatment, palliative care, and end-of-life care, and also in certain acute care situations, if properly dosed. But for other pain management, the CDC recommends nonopioid approaches including physical therapy. Patients should choose physical therapy when: • The risks of opioid use outweighs the rewards • Patients want to do more than mask the pain • Pain or function problems are related to lower back pain, hip or knee osteoarthritis, or fibromyalgia • Opioids are prescribed for pain • Pain lasts 90 days Before you agree to a prescription for opioids, consult with a physical therapist to discuss options for nonopioid treatment. Physical therapists can play a valuable role in the patient education process, including setting realistic expectations for recovery with or without opioids. Benefits of Physical Therapy: Physical therapists are evidence-based health care professionals who offer costeffective treatment that improves mobility & relieves pain, reduces the need for surgery & prescription drugs, & allows patients to participate in a recovery plan designed for their specific needs. Improve Mobility & Motion: Physical therapists are experts in improving mobility & motion. Pain-free movement is crucial to your quality of daily life, your ability to earn a living, your ability to pursue your favorite leisure activities, & so much more. Avoid Surgery & Prescription Drugs: While surgery & prescription drugs can be the best course of treatment for certain diagnoses, there is increasing evidence demonstrating that conservative treatments like physical therapy can be equally effective (& cheaper) for many conditions. Join OSTI’s Belvidere Physical Therapy (1686 Henry Luckow Ln.) & Poplar Grove Physical Therapy (13524 Julie Dr.) clinics as we celebrate National Physical Therapy Month. The pink ribbon has been synonymous with breast cancer for years. Nowadays, people rarely think twice when they see it, having grown accustomed to the pink ribbon & what it symbolizes. Breast Cancer Awareness Month has been celebrated each year since 1985, & many other breast cancer awareness initiatives have been devised since then. While the pink ribbon may seem like it’s been in use for just as long, it was actually established only about 20 years ago. Ribbons have long symbolized something important. For decades, yellow ribbons have been used to alert others to soldiers at war or hostages that hadn’t yet come home. People often tied yellow ribbons around trees at home until their service men & women came home safely. During the height of HIV/AIDS activism & awareness, red ribbons were worn to symbolize support for those with the disease. Although the pink ribbon evolved because pink expresses femininity, calm, health, & youth, the first breast cancer ribbon was actually peach. Charlotte Haley is credited with devising the first breast cancer ribbon in 1992. She was a breast cancer survivor & came from a family of women who also fought the disease. She created peachcolored loops at home & then distributed the ribbons at her local grocery stores. Haley encouraged people to wear the ribbons & contact legislators to demand more funding for breast cancer research. An attached note was distributed with the ribbons stating, “The National Cancer Institute annual budget is $1.8 billion, only 5 percent goes for cancer prevention. Help us wake up our legislators & America by wearing this ribbon.” The same year Evelyn Lauder, senior corporate vice president for the Estee Lauder company, & Self magazine editor Alexandra Penney teamed up to produce a pink ribbon. It was distributed at makeup counters all across the country. The company collected more than 200,000 pink ribbon petitions asking the U.S. government for increased funding for breast cancer research. Pink ribbons are now seen all over & have become the uniting force for millions of women who are facing breast cancer or supporting someone with the disease. In 1996, Nancy Nick created a blue-and-pink ribbon to symbolize male breast cancer ribbons in honor of her late father. The ribbons remind others that breast cancer can affect men as well as women. Great strides have been made with respect to breast cancer, but with about 225,000 new cases popping up each year in the United States alone, there is still work to be done.

I Need To Find What?! Why You Need A Life & Estate Organizer Nicole Fasano, J.D., CTFA, Vice President, Wealth Advisor & Trust Officer - Alpine Bank Trust & Investment “I need to find what?!” is a question often asked after a loved one’s death. From the typical documents, such as life insurance policies, to the less obvious, such as stopping automatic payments from online banking, there are a lot of papers that must be identified after a death in order to administer an estate. How will your executor or successor trustee know what insurance copy or bank you used or who you used as your attorney or accountant? This can become a tangled web of information for your loved ones. You can make this process easier by creating a Life and Estate Organizer. A Life and Estate Organizer sets forth all the information your loved ones may need upon your incapacity or death. Below are a few examples of the information generally put in a Life and Estate Organizer. Contact Information: There are many people who need to be contacted upon death. Family needs to be contacted to make funeral plans. Your attorney and accountant should know of your death. Your executor or successor trustee will likely need to work with your attorney to administer your estate and your accountant to prepare your final tax returns. Putting this information in your Life and Estate Organizer lets your executor or successor trustee know who they need to contact for funeral arrangements and further administration. Make sure you include phone numbers and addresses. Estate Planning: Do you have a Will? Do you have a Living Trust? Who is your attorney? Where are the original documents? Your executor needs to know that they are the named executor and have a document to prove it. Make sure you have a document stating what estate planning you have, what attorney you used, and where you keep the original documents. Personal Finance and Assets: It’s also important to document where you bank. What bank do you have checking and savings accounts with? What bank holds mortgages, auto or personal loans? The banks will need to be alerted when there’s a death to stop any potential fraud and receive all of the correct information for your estate. Also, your executor/ successor trustee should know where you keep your insurance policies, for your life, home and auto. Original life insurance policies generally have to be turned in to the company upon death so it’s important that your trustee knows where you keep the originals. Digital Assets: A consideration that is fairly new, and therefore often forgotten, is your digital property. You want to make sure your executor/successor trustee has the websites and your usernames and passwords. You would need this for any sort of digital property, such as social networks (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn), photos (Instagram, Flikr), online business (Ebay, Etsy), book, music and movies (iTunes, Amazon) or any other digital assets you may have.
