BOONE COUNTY DRUG PREVENTION COALITION NEWSLETTER A Message From Our Program Director, Alyssa Rothmaler The holidays are a great time for everyone to enjoy, but sometimes we find that with more gatherings or work and school breaks, comes increased possibilities of using substances or making other poor decisions. The important things to remember are that so many fun things can be done without the need to engage in substance use. Make plans and create fun projects to do with friends or family members around the holidays. Maybe attend something new and spend the day making memories at a fun pop up event. Do something special for your community especially if you are in a position that is better than others to share what you have. Boone County has so many great resources and events to offer through out the holidays. Below you will learn about some things coming up that may be would be of interest if you have not tried it yet! Many of these are free to attend and just involve your time and energy. Take time to carve that pumpkin, attend something fun, window paint, decorate a tree, or get involved in Red Ribbon Week! Have a wonderful time during these holidays!

RED RIBBON WEEK Red Ribbon Week is a national campaign dedicated to educating and spreading awareness about substance use and providing fun ways/activities to share prevention efforts in the community. The theme this year is “Celebrate Life”. Belvidere High School will be participating in Red Ribbon activities exclusively and we are hoping your business, school, or organization will too! Show your support by: • Hanging a red ribbon on the wall or from the window or even wearing one • Post and share your stories on social media to our Facebook page with staff/youth participating in Red Ribbon Week • Wear red to show your support • Provide an activity that promotes positivity and goes with the theme To learn about how you can get your company or organization or even your youth involved, get in touch with us today!
DRUG TAKE BACK DAY - OCTOBER 29TH, 2022 Did you know that we have a drug overdose epidemic in our country and even in our own community? Too often people become victim to this tragedy and don’t realize that there are steps to prevent addiction and overdose especially in youth. How can you help? You can keep your medications locked up and out of reach of anyone coming in and out of your household. You can also prevent curiosity by simply discarding unused or expired medications properly by bringing them to your local drug disposal site. We have our own in Boone County so you may drop off whenever you can! You can also participate in DEA Day and drop off on October 29th from 9 AM-12 PM at the Belvidere Township Building as a local drive by event. Location of Drop-Offs: The Candlewick Lake Admin Building at 13400 IL-76, Poplar Grove, IL 61065 or Belvidere Public Safety Building at 615 N. Main Street, Belvidere, IL 61008. How: Drive up and drop off your unused or expired medications. Please no sharps, liquids or aerosols.
