VIKING NEWSLETTER NORTH BOONE UPPER ELEMENTARY For the 3rd year in a row, the HERO Club at the Upper Elementary hosted a 5th Grade vs. 6th Grade Penny War. This year we chose to donate the “spoils” of the Penny War to an incredible local foundation whose mission it is to help Veterans stay on the move. The Oscar Mike Foundation is headquartered inside Candlewick Lake, hosting Veterans throughout the year helping them prove to themselves that they are stronger than even they believe, despite injuries inflicted fighting for our freedoms. The amazing students and staff of the NBUE collected a whopping $715. Caleb from The Oscar Mike Foundation graciously came to the UE to accept the check on Giving Tuesday, take a quick photo with the HERO Club, and allow us to thank them for all they do for our local Veterans.
DISTRICT TAX RATE North Boone CUSD 200 has made efforts to continue to decrease the tax rate over the years. With the planned abatement schedule the district was able to lower the tax rates once again with the 2019 tax levy. The last four years the tax rate has decreased. The tax rate for 2018 was 7.4791% and we estimate the 2019 tax rate will be around 6.9%.
2020-2021 REGISTRATION North Boone will continue with online registration for the 2020-2021 school year. Registration will open in mid-March. Please watch the website and your child’s backpack for more information.
DISTRICT DEVELOPMENT The teachers have been hard at work this year with curriculum development. K-12 science and math teachers are meeting to collaboratively create assessments, and K-5 math teachers are implementing a new math resource this year. English Language Arts and Social Studies teachers in grades 5-12 began their curriculum work this fall, and they are busy selecting priority standards for their students to master.
POPLAR GROVE READING NIGHT On Thursday, November 21st, Poplar Grove Elementary hosted Family Reading Night. Throughout the evening, families visited different classrooms and filled out a passport that asked them to interact with various famous children’s authors through a series of activities. Two Thanksgiving baskets with items donated by the staff were raffled off. Students enjoyed snacks and a free book of their choice to take home. Fun was had by all!

VIKING NEWSLETTER MANCHESTER MYSTERIES Each year 4th grade students in Ms. Schmidt’s classroom create and publish a book. The theme of this year’s book was “Mysteries at Manchester.” Students all toured around the school to find mysterious places or things that sparked their imagination to write a story along the common theme. Students celebrated the publication with a publishing party where families were invited. Students voted on awards for each other’s stories such as “The Scariest Story,” “Awesome Illustrator” or the biggest award: “Detail King and Queen.” Those awards were presented at the party in front of parents like the Oscars.

CAPRON SCARECROWS Fall was just a blink this year! Capron Elementary School students were able to get out and enjoy the fall weather creating Scarecrows! Each class created a scarecrow working on teamwork and problem solving to help their creations come to life.
On November 7th, North Boone High School held a Veteran’s Day assembly to honor all Veterans and celebrate the sacrifices they have made for our country. The assembly was hosted by two of North Boone’s seniors. The programs highlighted artwork for our high school students, the colors were presented by the Belvidere VFW Chapter, the band played the Armed Forces Salute, Olivia Knox played Taps, the choir sang The Star Spangled Banner, and three of our local Veterans, Bob Childs, Butch Peters, and Tom Cleland, spoke to the North Boone High School student body. It was a wonderful celebration, and we look forward to hosting more Veteran’s Day Assemblies in the future.

NBMS students have had many successes this first semester. Whether they are learning about life for teenagers through a popular novel like The Outsiders, understanding art concepts by creating 3-dimensional sculptures, playing an instrument in the band, singing in the choir, or working as a team to achieve victory, our students have worked hard and grown academically, socially, and emotionally through these experiences. NBMS teachers work tirelessly to provide hands on learning to engage all learners. Novel studies, interactive labs, classroom activities, and technology all help students understand and apply what they are learning. NBMS Coaches also play a great part in the lives of our students. They spend hours with our athletes teaching them not only about the game, but life lessons. Our team successes include Volleyball and Basketball Tournament Champions as well as Basketball Conference Champs!
