The global stage

MODEL UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCES OFFER ‘GATEWAY TO THE WORLD’

As part of Bond University’s overseas study tour offerings, international relations, politics and arts students have the opportunity to travel overseas to immerse themselves in diplomacy through Model United Nations (UN) conferences around the globe, from Japan to New York.

In 2025, six Bond students stepped into the heart of global diplomacy at the WFUNA International Model UN in New York. Saxon McGregor rehearsed his speech in a Times Square snowstorm before delivering it at the UN General Assembly. Sienna Grubb led negotiations on humanitarian aid, navigating complex debates with poise. The group met with diplomats and policy advisors, including Bond alumna and Austrade’s Trade and Investment Commissioner Rachel Howard, gaining insights that textbooks could never offer.

Meanwhile, Erika Carroll joined the Japan English Model United Nations (JEMUN) tour, a 16-day cultural and diplomatic immersion across Japan. Erika reflected on the value of stepping outside her comfort zone and forming strong connections with students from Komatsu University. The experience allowed her to apply classroom theory in an international context, deepening her understanding of diplomacy and global collaboration.

Bond’s students returned not only with accolades, but with stories and skills that will shape their futures.

Shaping a city

THE EVOLVING ARCHITECTURE OF THE GOLD COAST

From the first beach bars to iconic cultural venues, the city’s buildings trace its transformation — and Bond University is part of the story.

For much of its history the Gold Coast has been a holiday playground, a place defined by sun, surf and escape. But with a population closing in on one million, it has developed a community and culture that extends beyond transient visitors. That evolution is reflected in the city’s architecture which has shifted from tourism-focused designs to buildings that serve residents, culture and civic life, while maintaining the city’s sense of openness and fun.

This is an extract from a story by Associate Professor Dr Elizabeth Musgrave of the Abedian School of Architecture.

Bean there, done that

Since 2019, Jim Chapman’s Nice Coffee Co has lifted Kenyan families out of poverty — an idea born during an assignment at Bond University.

Profits from every kilo of Nice Coffee help support the education of kids from Africa’s largest slum, Kibera. Jim has grown the fledgling business into a successful social enterprise.

“We’re funding around 14 full-time teachers’ salaries through the coffee and around 32 kids from the slum on scholarships to some of Kenya’s best high schools,” Jim says. He eventually handed the company over to local partners, ensuring they were set up for success.

The power of social enterprise hit home for Jim when he took part in Bond’s Transformer Program, an Australian-first entrepreneurship program that supports students with starting their own business or initiative.

“I can pinpoint the day — we had this guest speaker at Transformer who was a well-known social entrepreneur from West Africa and I remember hearing him talk about how business can deliver social impact.”

Jim’s latest venture is running safari tours from his family’s Ololo Safari Lodge on the edge of Nairobi National Park.

He’s now looking for ways to invigorate an industry he says has changed little over the years.

“Down the track, it would be fun to get into the tech scene here, which is big,” he says.

“There is actually a lot of talent here in Nairobi, they call it the Silicon Savannah.”

Lights, camera, action

EMMANUEL KAYONDO BACHELOR OF FILM AND TELEVISION

Emmanuel “Manny” Kayondo was completing Year 12 at Palm Beach Currumbin State High School when he attended Bond’s Open Day. From that moment, he says choosing Bond was a “no-brainer”.

“I was really inspired by the students I met. I could see the course was extremely hands-on and focused on getting students into the field, not stuck in classrooms,” says Manny.

Now in his final year of film and television, Manny is about to enter the workforce with aspirations of becoming a feature film director.

“The film program allows you to experiment with your interests and passions, it’s a really safe space for you to learn and grow,” he says.

“I’m passionate about screenwriting, as well as commercial and music video directing, but my ultimate ambition is to make films that people will see on screen.”

Manny counts the connections he’s made with teachers, peers and alumni as a highlight of his time at Bond.

“The connection I have with my peers drives me every day — one of my friends has already developed a career and niche in motorsports videography.

“Studying alongside talented people is a huge motivator for me and I’m grateful to be among them and learn from such different people from different backgrounds. It inspires me to be the best version of myself — iron sharpens iron.”

Ambition up close

Jemma Blair was backpacking around Ho Chi Minh City when she dialled into a Teams call to interview for Bond’s Riewoldt Family AFL Excellence Scholarship.

She got the scholarship and a few months later, Jemma moved to the Gold Coast to study exercise and sports science and play for the Bond Bull Sharks AFLW team under the tutelage of head coach Andy Lovell.

“I’ve always had a love for sport and have played as many different sports as I could throughout my childhood,” says Jemma. “In Year 12, I studied sports science, which sparked a deeper passion to understand how the body works. I’m fascinated by what our bodies are capable of and how we can adapt and improve through training.”

Before starting at Bond, Jemma heard about the opportunities, personal mentorship and networks available, and says the experience has lived up to its reputation.

“I’ve made many lifelong friends through my program and by being part of campus life and the AFL team,” says Jemma.

“One of the most important relationships I’ve built has been with my AFL coach, Andy Lovell. He’s instilled so much confidence in me, both as a player and as a person. I know he’s someone who’ll always be there, no matter what.”

Through the semesters and seasons of Jemma’s time at Bond, Andy has seen her become more confident, skilled, and even more organised.

“She juggles study, work, social life, sporting life, and being away from family, and she manages it all,” says Andy. “It’s incredible how much she takes on, and she remains calm through it all.”

Embracing every opportunity

“I had always imagined myself at Bond,” reflects Grace Purnell. “I was drawn to its stunning campus, strong sense of community, and the wealth of opportunities it provides. When I finally stepped onto campus, it felt like I belonged.”

Grace is now completing a double degree in business and international relations, an ambition sparked by her high school involvement in Model United Nations and interest in creative expression. “My Model UN experiences sparked a deep passion for global affairs and diplomacy,” she explains. “At the same time, my business major in marketing communications lets me explore my branding and content creation interests.”

Grace’s Bond experience has been defined by connection and leadership. “I love engaging with people from diverse backgrounds — it’s enriched my time here,” says Grace, who also serves as Brand and Content Director for the Bond University Student Association, plays social sport, and will soon travel overseas to represent Bond in a Model United Nations conference and study tour.

“I’ve been fortunate to develop meaningful relationships with mentors, academic staff, and peers,” she says. “Through classes, clubs, and campus events, I’ve built close friendships and professional networks that have truly enriched my university experience. These connections have not only provided guidance and support but have also opened doors to new opportunities, both personally and professionally.”

Looking ahead, Grace aspires to either work in executive marketing or become a diplomat with the United Nations. “Both paths will allow me to make a meaningful impact,” she says.

Grace’s advice for new students? “Step out of your comfort zone and embrace every opportunity to connect. Bond has such a welcoming community — make the most of every moment.”

The path to legal change

Shaniya Doueihi’s decision to study law was sparked by a deep interest in fairness and positive change. “I’ve always been drawn to understanding how rules shape society and how they can be used to create justice,” Shaniya explains. “Law challenges you to think critically and consider different perspectives, which are skills I value deeply.”

Choosing Bond, says Shaniya, was an easy choice. “I wanted a personalised, challenging and supportive learning environment,” she says. “The small class sizes, practical focus, and close connection with lecturers really appealed to me. Bond’s accelerated program also motivated me because it means I can enter the legal profession sooner.”

Alongside her studies, Shaniya has embraced Bond’s extracurricular opportunities and leads the Bond University Middle Eastern Student Association as president, facilitating events and activities that celebrate cultural diversity on campus and bring students together.

Shaniya’s ambition is to make a meaningful impact through law. “I’m passionate about advocacy and helping people navigate complex legal issues with fairness and empathy,” she says. “In the long term, I hope to contribute to positive change within the legal system.”

Game, set, mindset

For Livvy Devonport, life is about pushing boundaries — whether on the tennis court or in the classroom. “Bond was the only university for me,” she says. “As soon as I walked through campus, I knew the unique vibe fit me and that my goals would be met here, and they’ve exceeded my expectations.”

Now studying a Bachelor of Psychological Science at Bond, Livvy’s passion for psychology began in Year 10 when she took a psychology class. “That first class changed everything,” she explains. “What I love about this degree is it helps me understand myself and the world around me, and it’s essential for the mental side of being a professional tennis player. It allows me to be the best version of myself.”

Coming from a distance education background to pursue tennis, Livvy values the connections she’s made most. “The friendships and mentorships here have been incredible,” she says.

Beyond study, Livvy is deeply involved in campus life: Bond Elite Sport Program member, Tennis Captain, Vice President of the Bond Psychological Society, and a proud student ambassador. Through Bond’s partnerships, she’s even represented the University at Olympic meetings.

Livvy’s ambition is to become the first person to achieve both professional tennis player status and a psychiatry career. “I’m driven by my passion to learn and grow in all aspects of life,” she says. “I’m confident Bond has me on the right path.”

Things to consider when choosing a degree and university

Where you’ll attend university, and what you’ll study, is one of the biggest decisions you will make in your life. To help you navigate this next chapter with confidence, we’re sharing some advice on how to ensure you find the right fit for you.

YOUR INTERESTS

What subjects were your strongest at school? What types of topics and careers fascinate you? When do you feel the most ‘you’?

A great first step is to align your study to your passions, interests and ambitions, so spend some time reflecting on what you are interested in and start there when browsing program options.

HOW YOU LEARN BEST

Do you learn best independently, or do you prefer personal guidance and hands-on learning? Your learning environment is a crucial part of university study, and one that can surprise students who are transitioning from high school into a large university. Attend Open Days, explore websites, and ensure you’re aware of all of your options, and the differences between them, before making a decision.

YOUR FUTURE CAREER OUTCOMES

When you think of your future career, what comes to mind? If there are certain careers or jobs that you can imagine yourself doing, think about what degree and university is best going to get you there considering the program and opportunities to gain work experience and build your employability.

Get a head start

Experience university in your last years of school. From a one-day on-campus experience to completing an entire university subject, to competing in a national competition, there are so many ways to explore Bond, your way.

STUDENT FOR A SEMESTER PROGRAM

Bond’s Student for a Semester program allows high-achieving students to launch their tertiary studies ahead of their peers by undertaking a university subject while still in high school.

As a Student for a Semester, you will enrol in a Bond subject, get your own student ID card, and attend a weekly forum and tutorial. You’ll be rewarded with an unforgettable experience, a global network of friends, and the chance to gain credit towards your university studies.

The Student for a Semester program is offered at an exclusive rate of $250 per subject and is open to Year 11 and 12 students from the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Northern New South Wales regions with available subjects covering a range of topics such as architecture, law, marketing, screenwriting, and health.

The program will not only leave you with newfound knowledge about study and life at Bond, but you’ll also gain a deeper understanding of the university experience, and a potential credit towards your future university degree at Bond.*

• Be supported by a current student mentor throughout the semester

• Access a career counselling session hosted by Bond’s Career Development Centre

• Access all University facilities and support services including the Sports Centre, libraries and Academic Skills Centre

* Direct subject credit will depend upon your chosen degree program and may not be applied toward the Bachelor of Design in Architecture or the Bond Medical Program, due to the structure of these programs. Please check with Bond University prior to enrolment.

LEARN FOR CREDIT SHORT COURSES

Take a deep dive into an area of interest and earn credit towards a university subject with Bond’s unique learn for credit courses. Designed for Year 11 and 12 students, learn for credit courses combine on-campus workshops with online modules you can complete at your own pace.

Bond runs a calendar of learn for credit courses offered throughout the year with topics including criminal law and procedure, creative writing, psychology and more.

If you complete five learn for credit courses, you can apply for potential credit towards Bond University subjects and obtain two points towards the Queensland Certificate of Education.

EXPERIENCE DAYS

Experience Days provide an opportunity for you to discover more about your chosen study area — from its facilities to academic staff and everything in between. You’ll get to don your lab coat, settle in at a Bloomberg Terminal, or take the reins on a project of your own, all with the guidance of our current students and staff.

YEAR 12 EXTENSION PROGRAM

The Bond Business School’s Year 12 Extension Program comprises fast-paced, two-day workshops designed to prepare students for university life and complement the Year 12 curriculum across business and maths streams. It is free of charge and top performing students will be awarded a part-fee scholarship or bursary towards future study.

BOND UNIVERSITY MODEL UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE (BUHMUN)

The Bond University High School Model United Nations (BUHMUN) is a two-day conference where high school students embrace the role of a modern diplomat or journalist. During this immersive experience, students will represent a country’s position in simulated international debates addressing the world’s most pressing issues.

NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL MOOTING COMPETITION

A moot is a mock court proceeding. In a moot, students act as legal counsel representing one of the parties to those proceedings, delivering oral presentations of legal submissions, against opposing counsel, before a moot court judge.

Hosted by the Bond University Faculty of Law, the National High School Mooting Competition is one of the most established of its kind in Australia. The competition provides an opportunity for high school students from across the nation to learn more about the law and begin to develop tangible legal skills.

The National High School Mooting Competition is open to students in Years 10, 11 and 12 at Australian high schools. The preliminary rounds of the competition are held virtually (online), with the semifinals and grand final held on campus on the Gold Coast at Bond.

THE BOND UNIVERSITY FILM & TELEVISION ACADEMY (BUFTA)

The Bond University Film & Television Academy (BUFTA) runs Australia’s premier filmmaking competition for high school students. Competitive, fun and fast-paced, BUFTA is open to Year 11 and 12 students. Many BUFTA participants and Bond alumni have gone on to pursue incredible global careers in the industry.

BUFTA provides an opportunity for high school students to showcase their writing, directing, editing and production skills, and the chance to win awards including a scholarship to study the Bachelor of Film and Television at Bond.

The BUFTA Ceremony broadcast is proudly produced, directed, and broadcast live by Bond University’s first-year Bachelor of Film and Television students.

BACHELOR OF LAWS

“I completed the Student for a Semester program when I was in Year 11. It gave me a view into what university life is really like. You’re working with actual university students on projects and you’re learning from real lecturers, having classes out of school time so it gives you that real insight into what uni could be like for you in the future.”

Financing your degree

Bond University is a fully independent, not-for-profit institution that invests 100 per cent of your tuition fees into providing a five-star educational experience, state-of-the-art facilities, and a truly personalised student framework.

While our tuition fees are not subsidised by the Australian Government, they can be financed through a number of options including government assistance packages.

FEE-HELP

FEE-HELP is an interest-free student loan program funded by the Australian Government for all Australian citizens and others who meet the eligibility requirements. Similar to HECS-HELP, FEE-HELP allows eligible students to defer their tuition fees until after they graduate, when they can then be paid off in regular instalments.

From 1 January, 2020, a combined HELP loan limit replaced the FEE-HELP limit and includes FEE-HELP, VET Student Loans, VET FEE-HELP, and HECS-HELP. Only HECS-HELP borrowing from 1 January, 2020 onwards counts towards a person’s HELP limit. Any existing FEE-HELP, VET FEE-HELP or VET Student Loans that counted towards your FEE-HELP limit will count towards the combined HELP limit.

In 2026, the combined HELP loan limit is $129,883 for most students. The limit for students in the Medical Program is

Ambition loves company

BOND’S OWN EXPLAIN WHY AMBITIOUS GOALS CALL FOR A COMMUNITY TO MATCH

Ambition grows in good company, among peers, mentors, and communities who share drive, challenge thinking, and celebrate wins.

Ambition loves company is an idea that’s intuitive, and backed by science. From psychology to education, organisational behaviour, and social connection, there’s compelling evidence that our goals are shaped by the people around us.

Bond researchers say ambition is contagious. “When we’re surrounded by people who are driven, we tend to mirror that drive,” says Associate Professor Libby Sander. “It’s not just motivation, it’s emotional and goal contagion.”

Assistant Professor Megan Lee adds that environments fostering autonomy, competence, and connection are key to sustaining ambition. “When people feel supported and capable, they’re more likely to pursue meaningful goals and persist through challenges,” she says.

Graduate Saxon McGregor agrees. “At Bond, you’ll find people who challenge you, back you, and walk beside you. People who show you what’s possible and then help you get there,” he says. “You feel more confident putting yourself out there, and you build the resilience to bounce back if things don’t go to plan.”

His advice to future students? “Say yes to everything. Keep doors open, or better yet, bust them open. Step in and experience what that opportunity might be.”
