My La Marina with Louise from Mariposa Belleza Tell us a bit about you, your background and where you´re from originally?

I am Louise, but everyone calls me Lou. I am the founder of Mariposa Belleza. Originally from the countryside of Norfolk, my journey to Spain has been a dream realised. I qualified in 1996 with NVQs to a high level and an International CIDESCO Diploma, which is equivalent to a medical nurse’s qualification in Anatomy and Physiology. This has enabled me to introduce a medical peel, BioRePeel, to my salon, Mariposa Belleza, here in La Marina. Norfolk and La Marina are very similar in terms of their slower pace and community. What brought you to Spain and how did you get started here?

My family drew me here. My husband’s parents and brother’s family were already settled and we knew this sun-kissed corner of the world would be ideal for raising our two sons. Looking back, it was the best decision we could have made. Life in La Marina Urb, San Fulgencio has enabled my salon, Mariposa Belleza, to flourish as a haven for those seeking a personal touch. I arrived qualified, experienced and ready to launch a professional salon that delivered excellent results and I created this space with simplicity and authenticity at its core - a calming retreat where beauty feels natural, real and just for you. I offer one-to-one appointments in a private, safe space...I was qualified and experienced and wanted to scale back to a more personal approach...oh, and I introduced the ladies of the Urb to the original CND Shellac!! It was a novel product at the time before the nail industry exploded and its copies became ubiquitous. Mariposa Belleza is located in La Marina Urb. I will be celebrating the salon’s 16th

anniversary next March. Where are you based now and what does life look like today?

As a family we relocated from La Marina Urb to Elche due to my husband’s work. The combination of Elche’s busy city life and the tranquil La Marina Urb is ideal. I find it blissful to spend my days in La Marina Urb with my clients, my work and the serenity of my white walls. What are your favourite aspects of the Spanish lifestyle?

The food! Incredible! Mediterranean cuisine is my favourite. Also I like the slower pace of life with everything done at a slower, more leisurely pace. And...Spain´s rich culture gives you the chance to rewrite the script of your life! For excample...the summer Fiesta in Elche - slleep during the day and celebrate the fiesta at night! This is a weeklong event. It is my annual holiday from the salon. It always sounds like there is a disco right outside my window! The city of Elche is so vibrant during this particular week that it does not stop or sleep. Then everything closes for the second half of August! What does the future hold for you and Mariposa Belleza?

I am dedicated to caring for my clients and continually researching new innovative science and treatments. I carefully select only the best products to bring into the salon. I genuinely enjoy my chosen profession, I love spending time with my clients and helping women feel good about themselves is so rewarding.

GOODBYE

By Carol Garrett Finding no warmth, an outstretched hand Dont leave me lonely as here I stand. Life began, we were in our prime Its been far too short, I need more time. I had no choice, you must believe You know I did not want to leave. A whisper now, I hear your voice

BETRAYAL

By Paddie Christie The years have flown spring, summer, autumn, winter. But you are still here in the closet of my brain your betrayal a machete

Those rich tones fading. “I had no choice”. You kept me safe, your arms were strong Now just a phantom, it feels so wrong. I may be gone, you may not see And just believe, it saddens me. With you close by I felt no fear

leaving nuggets of membrane

The future blank without you here.

floating inside my skull

The love we had, I was your bride,

like tadpoles in a pool of stagnant water. You sit on your throne of self-righteousness, hypocrite, unworthy of love or hate you preen in the glow of insignificant others. I am here shackled by memory but, free of you.

Content and happy to walk beside. Take those memories from the day we wed To help you through the days ahead. Good bye my love, I won’t forget Your zest for living when we first met You left me with a precious gift of love and hope as memories drift.

Someday I will feed my memory of you

I do not want to leave our life

to the marauding hyenas

And you will always be my wife.

and your uselessness will travel quickly through their intestines and be deposited as pooh on the grass.

Your time has come, we have to part. Your life, your being, filled my heart.

There, your exceptional uselessness

Now the ache is hard to bear

will kill all the grass

Painful emptiness is all I share..

and everyone will know.

LEGAL MATTERS

with L&A Solicitors

Why Having a Spanish Will is Essential (Unless You Enjoy Torturing Your Relatives) Moving to Spain for the endless sunshine, glorious tapas, and relaxed lifestyle is one of the best decisions you will ever make. However, assuming that your estate will neatly sort itself out under the Spanish sun is a classic - and potentially disastrous - misconception. Relying on a foreign will to deal with your Spanish property, bank accounts, or vehicle is a fast track to bureaucratic misery for the loved ones you leave behind. A straightforward Spanish will drafted correctly by a solicitor and signed before a local notary - costs peanuts for the amount of hassle it saves. Should your family have to settle your estate without one, they will easily shell out thousands in legal expenses, sworn translations, official Apostille stamps, and endless trips to administrative offices. Skimping on a fee that barely covers a nice dinner for two usually leaves your grieving relatives with a monumental financial and administrative hangover. How Spanish Inheritance Rules Actually Work The Spanish approach to inheritance is fundamentally different from the British system of free disposition, where you are entitled to leave your flat to the local cat shelter if you so choose. Under standard Spanish civil law, forced heirship rules (la legítima) strictly dictate who gets what. Generally, two-thirds of your global estate is legally reserved for your direct descendants. If you had quietly planned to leave your property entirely to your surviving spouse, or only one of your children for example, Spanish law will politely - but firmly - say no. The Residency Trap: Nationality vs. Spanish Law Here is the crucial catch under EU Succession Regulation (EU No 650/2012): the default rule states that the law of your country of habitual residence applies to your estate when you pass away. This

means that if you reside in Spain and do not explicitly specify otherwise, Spanish forced heirship rules will automatically govern all your assets. Fortunately, the regulation offers a very neat escape hatch for foreign nationals. You can explicitly state in your Spanish will that you choose the law of your nationality (such as English, Scottish, or Northern Irish law) to govern your succession. By taking this simple step, you instantly regain full testamentary freedom, allowing you to leave your assets to your spouse, partner, or favourite charity exactly as you intended. Inheritance tax, however, would be higher the more distant the degree of kinship is. Importantly, the absence of a will does not mean that inheritance rights are lost. Under intestate succession laws, legal heirs retain their full right to inherit; however, the lack of a testated disposition requires an additional legal process, which makes the overall settlement longer and far more administrative. A Quick Visit for Complete Peace of Mind A Spanish will applies strictly to your assets within Spain - meaning it won´t interfere with your UK assets - and is safely registered with Spain’s Central Registry of Last Wills in Madrid. Taking an hour out of your day to set up a Spanish will isn´t just sensible financial planning; it is a true act of mercy for your heirs. Save them from Spanish administrative purgatory, keep your estate out of court, and ensure your home goes precisely where you want it to go. The above information does not replace legal advice and each specific case must always be evaluated individually.

Soul Notes by Nicola Dunsford

Hello Amazing Soul, In a world that often encourages us to keep moving, achieving, and staying connected, stillness can feel unfamiliar. Our days become full of responsibilities, conversations, and endless distractions, leaving little room to simply be. Yet within stillness lies an invitation to return to ourselves. It is not about doing nothing, or escaping life, but about creating space to reconnect with our mind, body, and soul. When we pause, we give ourselves an opportunity to notice what has been overlooked and listen to what is quietly asking for our attention. Beyond the Noise Our external world is constantly filled with sound and activity. Beneath this, we also carry an internal noise of thoughts, worries, expectations, and unfinished conversations. When we spend time in stillness, we begin to notice these layers without needing to fix or change them. Gradually, we can discover a deeper sense of awareness beneath the busyness. Stillness does not necessarily mean having an empty mind. It means allowing our thoughts to come and go without being carried away by every one of them. The Soul’s Quiet Language When we slow down, we create space to reconnect with our intuition and inner guidance. Sometimes the soul communicates through a feeling, a gentle knowing, a memory, or a sense of clarity that arrives when we stop searching for answers. Ask Yourself: • • •

What am I being invited to notice? What has my inner voice been trying to tell me? Where in my life would I benefit from creating more space?

You don’t need to find immediate answers.

THE HEALING POWER OF STILLNESS:

Returning to Your Inner Peace Sometimes simply asking the question is enough to begin a deeper conversation with yourself. A Practice of Stillness 1. Find a comfortable place where you can sit undisturbed for a few minutes. 2. Close your eyes and bring your attention to your breathing. Notice the gentle rise and fall of your body. 3. Allow sounds around you to come and go without needing to follow them. If thoughts arrive, acknowledge them kindly and return to your breath. 4. Place a hand over your heart and quietly say: “I give myself permission to pause. In stillness, I reconnect with my soul.” 5. Remain here for as long as feels comfortable. Discovering the Healing Within Stillness can help us recognise what we genuinely need. Perhaps we need rest, a boundary, a change of direction, or simply more compassion for ourselves. By creating regular moments of pause, we begin to respond to life with greater awareness rather than automatically reacting to everything around us. Stillness is not a withdrawal from life. It is a way of meeting life more consciously. Closing Reflection Within the pauses between life’s activities, there is an opportunity to reconnect with something deeper. You don’t need to travel far or seek complicated answers. Sometimes, the most meaningful journey begins by sitting quietly and listening within. May October invite you to embrace stillness, honour your inner wisdom, and discover the peace that has always been available within you. Wishing you a peaceful, soulful October, filled with moments of stillness and inner connection. Namaste.

Nicola is a Spiritual Life Coach and Energy Healer who leads the Soul Café. The group gathers fortnightly on Wednesday mornings. For more details, please call/message Nicola on 634 199 029 (phone or WhatsApp).

WATCH YOUR (DOG) STEP

A recent scientific research has proven steps in dogs with incoming dementia becomes significantly shorter, specially in fore limbs. And this sign is much more specific than, for example, the age, for detecting what is called "cognitive dysfunction syndrome" at its early stages. This phenomenon, which has also been detected in humans suffering from senile dementia (Alzheimer or similar diseases), seems to be caused by some damage at brain frontal cortex and cerebellum, which is the organ that controls the balance (cats cerebellum is much bigger and developed than in most other species, and this is the reason why they "turn around and always fall on their feet"). For the research they used about 88 old dogs, males and females, crossbreed and pure breed, and all of them were supossed to have lived longer than 75% of the expectance of life according to their breeds and sizes. The average age was 12.5 years. They were thoroughly studied (physical, neurological and sensory tests) at the lab for 3 days every 6 months, and at

the same time, the owners had to fill in a questionnaire, including Canine Dementia Scale (CADES), and Brief Pain Inventory, for detecting any kind of chronic pain. One of the tests consists on a 5 meter walk on the lead, not receiving any kind of stimulation. The results were the dogs that ended up developing dementia, had their front legs steps about 1.5% shorter every 10 points increasing at CADES). Why the front legs? Because dogs, when walking, use back legs just for "traction", while front ones are also used for "braking" and "turning", which implies a bigger number of neuronal circuits so they can fail more easily. Of course, dementia is not the only condition that may shorten the steps: chronic joint and spine problems may produce the same effect, so when the owner detects this condition is time to see the Vet, because whatever the problem is (dementia, arthritis or spine problems), deserves some professional attention in order to establish a diagnosis, a prognosis and a treatment.

Ingredients For the Sponge

225g baking spread, straight from the fridge, plus extra for greasing 225g self -raising flour 1 tsp baking powder

4 large free range eggs

2 eating apples, peeled, cored and grated Icing sugar for dusting

For the lemon cream filling 150ml double cream 3 tbsps lemon curd

Measure all the sponge ingredients except the apple and icing sugar into a large bowl and beat with an electric hand whisk until combined. Fold the grated apple into the mixture then divide it equally between the two sandwich tins. Bake in the oven for about 25-30 minutes until golden, well risen and coming away from the sides of the baking tins. Remove from oven and allow to cool. Meanwhile, make the lemon cream filling.
